I personally despise the "you all meet in a tavern" bit. It's pretty much standard operating proceedure for me in games that I DM to force past character introductions and just have everyone assume that their characters already know one another.

In tabletop games, the "meet and greet" stage tends to be awkward, and in play by post games, it eats up precious days (or even weeks) of posting time.
