Topic: The Tides of Fate Q&A
Subject: communications in Star Wars

I have been asked about how communications in Star Wars works. Here goes:

Basic communication is via commlink. These come in hand-held, vehicle-mounted, and installation/starship mounted varities (listed from weakest to most powerful). Without any assistance, a typical handheld commlink has an effective range of 50 kilometers, more or less, but if properly configured to take advantage of a satellite network, this can be greatly increased. Commlink speed is slightly less than that of light, so these are pretty much useless for interstellar communications.

Option number two is subspace radio. This has a much greater range than standard commlink, but requires a lot more power. A subspace radio typically has a real-time range of several light years. Sector governments often set up a network of subspace transceivers that help connect the scattered worlds, forming a sector-wide communications grid. Ships, command posts, government buildings, etc have these.

Finally, you have the HoloNet, the most powerful and far-reaching communications medium. A network of non-mass transcievers submerged into the time-bending dimension of hyperspace connects worlds in real-time across incredible distances. The HoloNet, maintained by the Republic, is a horrendously expensive venture, and similarly the devices required to communicate on the HoloNet are extremely costly.

HoloNet comms are the realtime, 3-d talking images you see in Star Wars movies. Devices that use the HoloNet are only found on spaceships (and usually only capitol ships, or those that have special need, such as General Kenobi's personal ship in episode 2) or installations. In my games, I would expedct that pay-per-use kiosks are available for this, as well.

Subject: the good life

Jaal's face splits into a huge grin as Caise accepts his offer of hospitality. "Oustanding!" he exclaims. "Don't worry about my father - guests are always welcomed on Darand Plantation. Well, at least they are usually welcomed."

Umalad's expression is fairly tough to read - aside from sheer terror, ithorian faces simply don't show convey emotions well to most other species - but Jeena does well enough for the both of them. It is clear to everyone (save possibly Jaal) that she thinks this is a bad idea. "A jedi in our home!" he tells her as they head back to the landspeeder.

The party piles into the two landspeeders, taking advantage of the extra seating capacity that Jaal so highly touted. Lana ends up sitting next to Mercury. "Classics? These hunks of floating rust?" she snorts derisively. "Classic in the same sense as fossils, maybe."

Caise makes sure to find seating in the speeder with Jaal - though you get the impression that the young man would have it no other way. Jeena whispers a few more things to him, but he seems to disagree. When Mercury finds an opening to ask Jaal about repulsorlift mods - and the two enter into a "fascinating" conversation about the methods used in the process - she speaks to Caise.

"Listen, as I'm sure you can tell, Jaal's father is no fan of the jedi order. I'm not sure why, myself, but he makes no secret of it. He's a good man, don't get me wrong, but don't be surprised if he's not as friendly as his son." She bites her bottom lip and turns to face the landscape outside.

The landspeeders follow a dirt track roughly north, where the native flora soon gives way to vast fields of grain. Before long, a group of structures, with one particularly larger than the others, comes into view. "Welcome to Darand Plantation!" Jaal exclaims as the speeders whir to a stop in front of the house. "Okay, everybody out. We'll feed you, give you a bed, even a hydro shower if you want one."

Gerald Darand proves to be much larger and imposing than his son - they share coppery locks, but little else. Despite Jeena's concerns, he is welcoming enough - while not overly warm, he is polite, and offers you free use of his home. Once he recognizes Caise as a jedi, he seems to grow thoughtful for a moment, but that is all.

"We serve dinner at 2000 standard," he explains, "and as I'm sure Jaal told you, he will be visiting the city in the morning - be ready to go by 0600. If you require anything, ask my servant, Craln, or one of the droids." He glances at Jaal. "Now, if you will excuse me, I have business to attend to."

With that, he leaves.

Assuming that Mercury also introduces himself...

Lana frowns at Ziv, but follows suit. "And I'm Lana. I thought they quit making those R45's before I was born?"

Jaal chuckles. "Yeah, they are pretty old, but we it's cheaper to keep 'em running than it is to buy new ones. Besides, almost everything they sell these days seats no more than four sentients, unless you wanna pay extra - and my old man hates to pay extra for anything." The last is added with a grin. "Anyway, I'm pleased to meet you all - sorry it's under such circumstances."

The red-heaired human seems to ignore Ziv's comment - if you were to judge, you'd say that he was actually quite taken with Caise. "A real jedi," he breathes, "I've heard the stories, like everyone has, but never met one.

Tell you what - you all look like you could use a lift. You're welcome to come back to the plantation with us tonight, and we'll give you a ride to Dalroth in the morning... we've got to make a supply run anyway."

When Jaal mentions taking you back to the plantation, a look of concern crosses Jeena's face, and she whispers in his ear, but Jaal brushes it off. "Nah, he'll be fine." He turns back to the group. "If you're looking for a ship, you'll probably have to go as far as Pandath... there's no real spaceport in Dalroth, but it's close, and has enough to meet our needs. You can probably hitch a ride there. What do you think, Umalad?"

The ithorian speaks in oddly accented Basic. "I agree that they will fare well in Dalroth, Jaal. I do not agree that your father will be pleased with these guests. He does not care for..."

Jaal cuts him off with a wave. "He doesn't like a lot of things, but these folks need a hand. I'll deal with father." He turns back to the group. "So, whaddya say?"

Subject: dust cloud at three o'clock!

The tension in the air is palpable as the dust cloud approaches. Discussions are made as to options, but on this flat prairie, there is really no place to hide. Weapons were readied in case of a fight... there is little else to be done.

Shortly, it becomes possible to distinguish two individual shapes beneath the dust - a pair of rather old landspeeders. "SoroSuubs... probably R45s, maybe 47s?" Mercury mutters to no one in particular. The landspeeders cover the remaining distance in little time, then come to a halt a few meters from the crash site.

The windscreens, until now completely closed to block out the elements, open fully to reveal three beings - a human male and female in the first, an an ithorian (male?) in the second. At first glance, none of them appear armed or hostile.

The human male, a red-haired young man of no more than twenty years, hops of of his vehicle. "Hello!" he greets you. "We saw the crash - is everyone okay?"

Assuming that no one feels the need to make this part difficult...

He nods. "I'm Jaal Darand, from Darand Plantation. This is Jeena and Umalad," indicating the blonde human female and the ithorian in turn. He looks you over and frowns. "You're offworlders, right? That means you don't have any real way around... where are you headed?"

Jeena has climbed out to take a place beside Jaal when apparently, he gets a good look at Caise for the first time. "You're a jedi, aren't you?" he asks.

...Eol is correct on all counts. Dime and Caise know one another from the voyage. Ziv and Mercury are crewmates on a ship with a fairly small compliment (six or eight, tops), so they also know one another to at least some degree. This voyage has not been terribly long, so the crew may have a little passing knowledge of the two passengers ("Hey, have you seen the blind guy?"), but that's probably about it.

Damanil is unknown, but his last name (Shadoran) is known to all due to the bothan's treachery.

Opening the hatch to the outdoors brings the smell of ozone and the pinging sound of cooling metal - the exterior of the lifeboat is still extremely hot. A quick once over reveals that the only way that the shuttle will ever move from this location will be due to the dilligent work of dedicated scrappers - the bottom third of the craft is buried beneath the soil, and the entire starboard stabalizing fin has been raggendly shorn off in the crash. Indeed, a small assortment of metallic pieces lie scattered inside (and to either side) of a gulch dug into the ground by the momentum of the lifeboat.

And yet, the vehicle (and her pilot) has done the job - all of the passengers are able to walk away from the crash.

As you file out of the shuttle, you are treated to a fairly large expanse of undeveloped land. A slightly purplish sky, dotted only by the occasioanlly wispy could, stretches high above. It is warm right now, but not overly hot, and a steady wind blows in from the east. Tall grasses sway in the breeze, and only a few odd trees break up the landscape.

Caise tries his commlink, but gets no response. Perhaps the range is too great, or the frequency is incorrect?

Discussions are made as to how to proceed when Damanil spots a small cloud of dust on the horizon. Realizing the implication, he points to it. "Someone is coming," the red haired soldier states.

11th Pfier (Thirkday), 452 E.R.
Town of Crall's Shoal, western Antaron

The gate of the wooden palisade is manned by four guards who are fairly nonchalant in their greeting, though you do overhear one of them ovserving that there "isn't a single real human among the lot" of you. You are asked to pay a silver leven per individual as an entrance tax to the town. The guards do frown upon learning that none of you have any of the Pardinese currency, and stipulate that they will take your Corian brissans instead, but that you will have to pay an additional two brissans (as a party) to cover the currency exchange.

DM's note: assuming that no one makes an issue of it...

Once the fees are paid, the sergeant on duty allows you into town. "Make sure to keep your peace strings on at all times," he warns you. "Baring steel within the walls of Crall's Shoal carries a fine of twenty levens."

Suitably warned, you are allowed entrance to the town itself. After riding through the gate, you are treated to a bit of a surprise - unlike many coastal towns of this size, Crall's Shaol is rather clean and apparently organized. The streets follow roughly straight paths, and at least the ones that you can see are all cobbled (no mean task with so much swamp land nearby). The countour of the land nearby is flat, though you can see that everything gently slopes down to meet the sea itself.

The coastline of the town is dominated by a series of docks, which are currently surrounded by a variety of small craft. However, it does not appear that any actual ship is in port at this time.

The street you currently stand on is obviously a main thoroughfare - it leads directly down to the docks themselves. En'Aranthea's directions state that she is to meet her contact at the Salty Dog tavern, two blocks up from the docks.

YeOlde - as you can see, this game only got off to a basic start before we derailed. Take a read, if you don't mind, of the game thread itself. Caise (the jedi)and Damanil (the soldier) are defintiely returning. Dime (the twi'lek) might come back... depends on what Admiral wants to do when he gets back in country.

Mercury (human, fringer [skilled pilot]), and Ziv (tech specialist [engineer]) are both available - it would be easier for the story to have someone assume one of these roles than to write them out and bring someone else in.

Since the game is so new, you'd be free to basically make either one of these guys your own, if you wanted to.

Buuut... if you want to make a new person, it would be no big issue to have your character meet up with the party planetside.

I love morning rush hour traffic. I find it to be an interesting study of human nature to try to decipher why exactly it is that high volume forces people to a COMPLETE STOP on the interstate when there is no accident - and the speed limit is 70 miles per hour.

Clearly, the simple fact that many people are using the road at the same time dictates that people should reduce their speed to nothingness.

Horror/suspense movie abot a jaded writer who stays in various "haunted" hotels and such, then writes books about his experiences. He's come to believe that there are no such things as ghosts, but when he chooses to stay in room 1408 of the Dolphin Hotel in Ney York, his mind is changed...

Not bad for a scary movie. A little cheese, but not much, and plenty of "gotcha" scary moments, tossed with a lot of mess-with-your-head type stuff. All told, defintiely worth watching.
