Well, let's see...

1. lots of mountain dew (check)
2. loads of funyuns (the oniony type chip, nope)

Check on number one. Number two? Nah. Doritos, cheese puffs, pizza.

3. black light (nope)
4. something to get high with (nope)

Nope, nope. I was actually unaware of the black light stereotype, and have only gamed with one person who had one (and that, as a teenager).

Don't game with any who get high, at least, not at game sesions.

5. we're all still virgins (just like the rest of the world on this one guys and gals)

I have two kids and a hot wife, so I gotta go no on this one. I have to say, though, I have played with quote a few who might be... and quite a few who definitely are not.

You left out the computer geek stereotype... fits me like a glove, I'm afraid.

That's the whole point. "Thak-co" is wacko. As in, don't say it that way!

"Thak-zero" deserves an automatic blow to the head, sorry. The whole point of an acronym is to be able to SAY it by substituting a letter for one or more words. If you substitute a word back in for a letter, you are defeating the purpose.

Subject: all of this build up for a wandering monster encounter?

Later, Arien would mentally kick himself further for not recognizing the danger until it was upon the party, but for now, there was no time for such distractions. They were surrounded by monsters directly out of nightmares, monsters that perfectly mached the descriptons given by the boys.

And of course, it would be giant bugs. Arien hated bugs, had hated them all of his life. As a child, he had been more than a little afraid of them; handling creepy crawlies had been the sole domain of Alloryen, much to his father's amusement. Even now, the sensation of an insect's chitin cracking under his bootheel made him a touch squeamish.

But these feelings, too, were set side by the knight in the face of the danger that threatened the group and the innocents they protected. After this was all said and done, Arien could allow his skin to crawl, but not now.

Without enough room to get a proper charge in with his lance, Arien instead drew Liun'naur and shouted the sword's name, causing it to instantly ignite into blue flame. Surrounded as they were, there was no real time or means for a tactical assault on the creatures - they would simply have to fight their way out. "Keep them away from the boys!" the knight cried as he spurred Wisnton into a charge at the nearest ankheg.

OOC: For now, Arien is not overly concerned with the mantis warriors; even if he wanted to fight them, he'd have to get through an ankheg, and he trusts his armor to protect him from their missiles while he deals with the biguns. Once we drop a giant bug or two, we'll revisit the best way to continue the fight.

Arien is operating under the "best defense is a good offense" mentality right now. However, if the boys are threatened, he will break off his attack and do everything possible to interfece himself between the boys and any attackers.

Subject: hi ho the merry-o, a questing we will go!

The boys launched into a tale that told of giant, man-eating bugs... and possibly of smaller bugs that rode them. Arien shook his head - he had fought a wide array of monsters, but nothing that fit this description. For the hundredth time since her departure, he wished tht Alloryen were here to provide insight on the matter.

But she wasn't. Other party members did have ideas, called them ankhegs and thri-kreen; the knight would have to trust that they knew what they were talking about. Not that it particularly mattered - the description the boys gave was enough. They were fearsome monsters, and they had to be killed. It was that simple.

Thom looked up at Arien with eyes filled with hope and faith, “But you are here now! That’s why you’ve come isn’t it? To slay the evil bugs? That’s what Paladins and their squires do! Save people in holy quest type thingies.”

The knight smiled grimly. The boy was right, after a fashion - this was what Arien did, and he would undoubtedly help. "Son," he spoke, "I am no paladin, but I pledge my blade to your family's assistance. We will slay these monsters, so that you may recover your supplies and give your father a proper burial." This was the only right and good thing to do; it never occured to Arien that any of his comrades might not see things the same way.

“Arien, Kilgrim,” Talas spoke up, then, his hand closing on the hilt of his sword, “all is not right. I feel that danger yet lurks close to us; be on your guard all.”

Char agreed. “I say we ge’ goin’ den,” the ranger said, “moun’ up an’ ride t’ rockier groun’. We can take da lads wit’ us, bu’ we’d be safer where it be ‘arder t’ dig.”

Winston shied again, and Arien suddenly realized that the horse had never seemed to calm. How could he have been such a fool? The animal was a trained and experienced warhorse - he had seen the chaos of battle, had even seen magical explosions. Four boys with swords would have never caused him to be nervous in the first place. No, the horse had sensed the real danger, and Arien had ignored it.

With a knot of fear forming in his stomach - fear the knight tried to tell himself was only out of concern for the others - Arien spoke urgently. "You are right, my friends. We must move, and now! Quickly! Boys, each of you share a saddle with one of us. We must leave this place now!"

As you have recently learned, most tabletop RPGs are played with the use of at least a few polyhedral (multisided) dice. A dice shower come when someone at the table does something particularly bad (their fourteenth bad pun in a row, for instance), and the rest of the player begin pelting them with dice.

Subject: kill the bandits! no mercy!

Arien had not been expecting the most coordinated of bandit attacks. From the intel provided by Char, these were peasants on the verge of starvation, turned to robbery in order to survive. Still, desperate men could be fierce, so caution was in order.

However, it quickly became obvious that these were desperate children, not men, and that the knight's scheme to minimize the threat had apparently been wasted. Bemused, he released the pommel of his sword. There would be no need for magical fire here.

As he listened to the boys bicker, Arien couldn't help feeling sorry for them - and more than a little irritated at them. The youngest boy's plea tugged at the knight's heartstrings - Arien had a well-documented weakness for any who asked for help. Even so, a firm hand was obviously needed here.

The heir to House Thedell conjured up memories of his grandsire - a bold and brave warrior, and a gruff and fierce man old man right up until they laid him in his tomb. Grandsire had a voice that was able to cause a dragon to quake in fear (or so it had seemed to Arien, as a boy) - now, he tried to channel some of that fierceness for himself.

"What's all this, then?" he bellowed from atop his warhorse. Drawing on every bit of his upbringing as a noble, Arien sat tall and assumed a commanding demeanor. "Are you trying to call down every real brigand from the here empire's borders?" He glanced up the hill. "Char, Dapple, I believe you can come down," he spoke with a bemused expression. He glanced over his shoulder to see that the mage had broken his invisibility spell, revealing the other three members of the group.

"Boys," the knight spoke sternly," do you have any idea how much trouble you are in? You thought to rob my friend and I," he indicated Kilgim. "The two of us would have been more than your match, and you never saw our other five friends. If we were other travelers, the crows would be picking your bones now... and if Freegate's patrols caught you, they would hang you for banditry."

He let his voice soften... "Now, what's this about your father? I can see you boys are not real criminals. What has brought you to this point?"

OOC: Arien will listen to the tale, obviously. He is fully prepared to pay the entry tax, plus give them some money to get stated, provided they can promise to do right.

Arien felt a range of emotions wash over him as one by one, the group added their input. Once Char communicated what he had seen and heard, the knight felt some of the adrenaline drain out of his blood; four untrained peasants were hardly a real threat to the group, and there was little glory to be had in running down rabble such as that. Indeed, between the rough ranger and the creepy wizard, Arien found himself feeling sorry for men who had apparently decided to kill him and his friends for a few coins.

Of course, if Char was right - and the man usually was - these were hardly men, and they were desperate. Arien's heart was inclined to quickly swing to the extreme of being full of pity; had he not sworn to right wrongs, to help the downtrodden wherever he could?

Adrian had an interesting take on the situation. Arien felt that the militant mage was a bit harsh, perhaps, and certainly lacked the sort of tact that Ally had spent her life trying to instill in her little brother, but at the heart of the matter, he had a point. If the group just gave these wretches coin, what was to say that they wouldn't turn to thievery later?

But what was to say that they would? Perhaps this good deed would be the turning point that helped shape their lives. Suddenly, Arien's head hurt with the contemplation of what might happen.

"Enough," he stated. "I believe that Adrian has a point. If we reward banditry with charity, we are likely to breed more banditry." Before anyone could object, he continued. "Even so, there is no honor in killing starving, hopeless pesants. Let us turn the tables on this ambush, shall we?"

"Char, you were able to approach them undetected, were you not? Perhaps you could do so again. Dapple, I would imagine you would also be up to this task?"

Arien grinned. "Kilgim, my friend, would you care to join me as bait? No matter how hungry they might be, four men would be fools to attack all of us. But if our sealthier members can outflank them, and our spellcsting companions can hide themselves and Talas by use of magic, the two of us might make an inviting mark, yes?"

The knight warmed to the idea. "If all they have are swords, we still have the advantage on horseback when they close to attack - truth be told, the two of us would have little problem subduing them as is. Still, let us draw them out, then our companions can burst from their various concealments when the time is right. If all goes well, there will be no need for blows to be struck. If it does come to violence, let us make all effort to do them no permanent harm."

Arien's emerald eyes sparkled in the sun. "Once our point is made, I have no issue in giving some charity, provided they vow to turn their feet from this path of crime. Agreed?"

OOC: feel free to comment, argue, etc. This is a proposed plan, not an "order". BTW, way to make a chance encounter interesting, oh DM!

As the party rides on through the lordless lands outside of Freegate, Arien's sunny disposition darkens a notch or two. The cliffs on either side of the path prticularly make the knight nervous - were he intending to stage an ambush, this would be the sort of site he would seek.

Suddenly, Winston shies, upsetting Arien's seat somewhat. Not enough for him to fall, but enough to make him reach for the hilt of Luin’naur in reflex. Seeing no immediate danger, the raven-haired man soothes his mount, thinking that perhaps the horse saw (or thought it saw) a snake or somesuch.

Several times over the next while, the warhorse repeats its reaction, and Arien is unable to ignore it. "Winston is spooked," he states to the party, "and he is a trained warhorse, accustomed to sights and sounds that would cause normal mounts to run in terror." The knight shakes his head. "Best be on our guard. Can any of you, by sharp eye or, mayhap, spell, see any cause for his fear?"

Unless someone can spot the cause for it, Arien will simply do his best to be on the ready - lance close at hand, sword free in its scabbard.

Captain Blair looked up as his door opened for what must have been the thirtieth time that day. This time, it was the new counselor that needed a moment of his time.

Naturally, Noah could not begrudge him; the man was a senior officer aboard the ship, and had been on board for nearly a day, now, without the two of them managing to sync schedules.

"Counselor Arevaci," the captain spoke by way of greeting, "welcome aboard the Discovery. Please, have a seat," he added, gesturing to the oft-used chair across from his desk.

"I apologize that we have not met sooner, counselor," Noah said. "It seems that we have both enjoyed a busy day so far." A slight grin. "I understand that you will also be serving as the new aCMO?"

OOC: any response

"Ah, my manners," Blair added. "I have presumed by calling you 'counselor'. If you would prefer lieutenant, or doctor, say the word."

OOC: again, any response

Noah nodded. "Very well. Mister Arevaci, you are a qualified starfleet officer, so I will trust you to run your department in the manner that you see fit - I do not presume to know your job better than you. That being said, my door is always open, should you need me." The captain chuckled a bit. "I believe that I may have stolen one of your lines."

Stardate: 2366.10.22
USS Discovery, CSO's Office, 1243

Ensign Talda had reported to Lieutenant Hemlos' office bearing all of his data on Aldor V - specifically, the Aldorian people themselves. Humanoid, with only a few minor cosmetic differences, such as their universally white hair, and the small ridges on the sides of their necks (which Caleb found to resemble gills). Of course, there were minor physiological variances, as well, such as the Aldorian's much milder (and thus, theraputic) reaction to the vaccine, as opposed to the deadly infection that humans suffered.

“Hello, ensign," Hemlos greeted him. "Thanks for coming on such short notice” she said as she gestured for him to take a seat on the opposite side of her desk. “I’ve asked you here to discuss a temporary duty assignment. I need you to join Lt. Keely’s team to help research the Rautos Prime Vaccine. In addition, I’m hoping that with your help, we may be able to determine if the Rautos and Alodrian viruses have commonalities. Needless to say if there are, it would be a major breakthrough, one which could be vital in saving thousands of lives.”

The Ensign listened attentively as Chantelle detailed the assignment.

While microbiology wsn't his specific forte, Caleb had plenty of training in the field, and his work had intersected the area more than once, so he was confident he would be up to the task. "Aye, sir," he replied by way of acceptance.

Of course, this meant that, for the time being, Caleb could expect to see few, if any, bridge shifts, but such concerns were obviously minor in the face of their assigned task.

“Beginning alpha shift tomorrow, please report to Lt. Natlie Keely in the Xenobotany lab. She will have the specifics on what they have found so far.”

Caleb nodded. "Aye, sir," he replied. "I'll do my best to help in any way possible," he added with an easy grin.

Having learned that the CSO was not as interested in military protocol as Caleb's prior superiors had been, he simply gave a nod, rather than a salute, on his way out of the office. Hmmmm.... Lieutenant Keely, he mused. The botantist that got bitten on the Gavin AWAY team, if I remember right. Suddenly, his face brightened a bit. Quite cute, if I remember correctly.

Yes, losing a few bridge shifts wouldn't be all bad.

[the night before, in the tavern]

Arien had been more than pleased to make the barmaid's acquaintance; no portion of his personal code denied him the pleasure of enjoying a good view, or of an evening with gentle company (a fact that had always irritated Ally). However, he had duties to his friends, so he simply settled for a smile and a wink.

Char's tale was disturbing, to be sure, but Arien was not concerned overmuch. Kilgim had his own theory as to what the vision could have meant, but the knight gave it even less thought. "Friend Char," he explained, "what with Alloryen as company, I have grown up with magic, as it were. Some of it, I understand - there is little to argue about the purpose of bolts of lightning, globes of exploding fire, or incantatons than make a man invisible. As for the rest of it... pah." He grinned. "Scryings and divinations often turn out to be more trouble then they are worth, and raise more quastions than they answer. Dwan trusts this man, and that is good enough for me until he proves himself untrue."

With that, the knight turned the conversation to food, drink, and companionship.

*********************

[the next morning]

As he spurred Winston to the front of the line, Arien basked in the early morning sun. It was a fine day for a new quest, and with companions such as these, how could they fail in their task?

Final words were exchanged with Dwan and his assistants, though little remained to be said. Arien grinned at the pseudodragon's antics, marveling as he did how she managed to copy in moments the sheen on his armor that had taken him well nigh an hour and a half of hard polishing to produce. Of course, he would polish it each and every night to ensure that the enchantments on the plate and shield both were kept fully maintained.

Without needing to be told, Char assumed his position as party scout. Talas, who had thus far begun to assume a label of disagreeableness, fell back to a rear guard position - exactly where Arien would have wanted him to ride. Perhaps this will go better than I had hoped, he mused.

"Friends," the knight spoke, "unless there are objections, I think it best to proceed much as we are currently aligned, at least when we must trvel single file - Char should scout ahead, obviously. I will take point, with Kilgim next. Adrian should take the next slot, followed by Dapple, Jal, and finally, Talas as rearguard. Any objections?" He doubted that there would be, unless someone's pride was somehow afflicted; it was a sound order, keeping the physically weaker members well protected at both ends, while still taking as much advantage as possible of everyone's strengths.

OOC: if not...

Arien grinned. "Very well, then! Let us ride!"
