I do wonder, though, how loyal this team truly is to Friend Computer.

Doesn't sound promising?  That depends entirely on which side of the screem that you're sitting...

How far away is she?  Lemme check my notes... carry the three... four miles, give or take?

Far enough that help isn't going to make it within the next couple of rounds.  And of course, finding the scout in the dark in the woods isn't going to be automatic...

Topic: The Corruption Hidden Beneath the Surface...
Subject: let's split up, gang!

Cedric and Midge are roused from their slumber as the party quietly debates the screams.  Kith sets off to act as a scout while the rest make ready.

The night is still oppressively warm, and the lack of sounds - no birds, no tree frogs, not even insects calling out - is unsettling, to say the least.  With no auditory cover, the rogue has to beat down thoughts that every quiet footfall is a thunderclap, that her hushed breathing is a roaring river in the night.

The ground is treacherous, at least for moving silently.  Tree roots jut up from the soil, leaves and twigs lie everywhere, just waiting to rustle or snap.  Despite her best efforts, Kith can feel the tension rise up inside, but she presses onward, senses razor sharp, looking for anything.

As she carefully slips around a mighty oak to the edge of a small clearing, the rogue spots a dark, human-like shape upon the ground on the far side, perhaps twenty yards distant.  On a more normal, brighter night, the moon might have illuminated the scene, but as it is, Kith feels fortunate to be able to pick up on the shape at all.

The first sound she hears is a low moan.  The half-syl freezes, realizing that there is slow movement around the falled shape.

The second sound is far more sinister - a quiet, joyful sound of glee... that slowly rises in manic giggling intensity.  Close by.

And directly behind her.  Between Kith and her friends.

That is an amazing idea.  I think that you should totally do that.

Falling damage is one of a DM's favorite types to inflict, after all.

Cidals do not possess infravision or the like.  I was thinking that they did, but a reference check says nope.

It is quite dark.  The moonlight is diffused by the mist, and the tree canopy means that very, very little light hits the forest floor.

>My screams shall be an early warning system and you should come running after me willy-nilly.

This may be the greatest line that any adventurer has ever uttered.  Not the wisest, mind you, but perhaps the greatest.

In response to Ch'dau's question - there has been no audible giggling.  The screams are not close, however; it is doubtful that giggling would carry as far through the woods and the mist.

"BEE-DEE-BEE-DEE-BEEP.  I am always happy to assist the superior troubleshooters." Jackie the Jackobot helpfully provides the mission number, which Jimm-Y-EEE punches into a terminal.  A strip of paper prints out, which Misterwa-I-ZRD snatches up with glee.  "Ah, yes!  I have been expecting you!" he exclaims.  "Please, ignore the radiation alarms," he casually mentions.  "I believe that they are malfunctioning again.  There is nothing to be concerned with."

He turns and rummages through some shiny bins, dragging out an assortment of items.  "Yes, yes... some truly remarkable inventions here for your testing!" he yammers happily.

He turns and places six items onto the table.  "What an exciting opportunity for you to help Friend Computer to field test some of these amazing devices!  Please, allow me to identify them to you.  He gestures to the items through his thick glove.

The first item is a beanie-stlye hat with an electromagnetic chin strap.  "Ah, yes.  Gyrobladed headgear, class A5A10 dot B3.  I'm sure that I don't have to tell you what THIS beauty does..."

The second item is a bulky pistol made from a greenish metal.  "This is a prototype tractor pistol.  When engaged, it will pull an item towards you with an unbreakable beam of force.  Very handy, indeed!"

The third item is a pair of OSFM (one size fits most) boots.  "These boots are magnetic, allowing the wearer to adhere to surfaces containing sufficient amounts of ferrous metals.  We feel that they could be excessively useful in intelligence work, surveillance, that sort of thing... and the ceiling cleaning applications are obvious."

The fourth is another pistol, this one quite small, but instead of a barrel, it has what looks like an antenna surrounded by rings.  "This," Misterwa-I-ZARD announces in a stage whisper, "is an ENERGY pistol.  Friend Computer is certainly impressed with your team to entrust you with such a weapon! Standard reflec armor of no color can stand up to it.  Be very careful with it!"

The fifth item appears to be a backpack with various hoses hanging out of it.  "This," the Indigo pronounces with joy, "is the very latest incarnation of the Automatic Bouncy Bubble Beverage Hydrator!  Clones no longer need to concern themselves with mundane activities such as drinking, as it detects the ideal amounts of beverage needed to keep you perfectly hydrated.  What an age of wonders we live in!"

The final item is a small electronic box with a display screen.  "This is the automatic clone finder.  If you touch it to a clone's skin to calibrate, it will flawlessly reveal to you the direction in which he can be found, as well as give you so useful indicators such as distance and speed of movement.  It is PERFECT for tracking important allies of Friend Computer."

Once the items have been offered, he smiles.  "Any questions?"  Ignoring any possible responses, he continues as if no one has spoken.  "No?  Good.  Please remember to be efficient and to fill out your paperwork thoroughly and promptly at the end of the mission, so that we can evaluate the performance of these amazing inventions and identify any possible improvements - however unlikely that may be.  Follow the exit to your left, please, which will return you to the garage.  Thank you for your service to Friend Computer!"

Seasoned adventurers in a tense situation... I'm okay with it either way.  It wasn't a super loud scream, but we have established that the woods are unnaturally quiet, so if you're not sleeping deeply, it could have roused you.  Particularly Ch'dau, Aranwen, Gib... these guys have been on enough battlefields to sleep lightly.  On the other hand, Cedric and Midge likely need to be woken up (though I'm okay if their players prefer them to have awakened).

Topic: The Corruption Hidden Beneath the Surface...
Subject: the ford and beyond

Fording the stream proves to be a little more treacherous than one might have thought; the water moves faster than it appears, yet the bottom is surprisingly slippery.  Midge struggles a bit once, and Ch'dau reflexively helps the cid avoid catastrophe with a steadying paw... only to lose his own footing and take a most undignified seat into the water.

Still, nothing more than pride is injured, and soon, the party reaches the far side without further incident.

The far bank proves no more interesting than the near; the soil is somewhat rocky, a bit sandy, the undergrowth is pleasingly sparse and the trail is fairly plain.

As dusk rapidly falls (thanks to the unnerving mist), the group sets forth to make camp.  A fire is made, food is prepared, watches are assigned.

Sometime after midnight, Kithran sits, fire to her back (so as to not interfere with her night vision), when she is startled by a scream off deeper into the woods.  It is a man's voice, though it is not particularly close by.  Silence, then he screams again, this time trailing off to nothingness.
