Subject: I've returned?

Hello everyone... It looks like there are a fair few people here who might remember me. The other day, for some reason I decided to see what was up at the old Red Dragon Inn, and managed to remember my password. Lo and behold, some of you I once knew are still here!

It's been a solid 7-8 years since I've posted here. A lot has transpired since then, obviously. I've changed, my circumstances have changed. I was in college when I was last playing here, and I don't know if anyone remembers, but I'd just returned from a hiatus all those years ago, only to hit a rough patch in my life. It seriously affected me at the time, but now it is, happily, all just a memory. Now, I'm engaged, settled into a new house a few months ago, and I have a little bit more free time. But at the time, pretty much all my time and energy was being spent elsewhere, and with other concerns I didn't have the heart to make time fot the inn anymore.

So, after all these years... I thought I'd pop in and say hello! Maybe get involved in a campaign soon, or launch one. Looking forward to re-connecting with some of my old innmates!

Have a merry christmas, happy hanukha, kwazy kwanza, a solemn, dignified ramadan, a cheerful solstice, a festivus for the rest-of-us and/or whatever other happy holiday you'd like to celebrate.

I'm off to stuff myself and unwrap gifts.

Subject: Happy Thanksgiving

The subject line says it all - happy thanksgiving RDI.

My friend's a firefighter and he's warned me about deep frying turkeys - it may be delicious, but if you're planning on deep frying a turkey, be careful. That oil gets really hot and splashes around and he's expected at least three fires in his district today.

Also - did you know that, apparently they don't celebrate thanksgiving in England?! How crazy is that?

Joking, of course. But my English friends do seem put off when I message them with "Happy Thanksgiving" just for kicks. I usually get a reply like, "Stupid yank."

Anyways, joking aside:
Happy Thanksgiving

Subject: Europe

I stayed in Paris for a little over a week, then went to Bruges and Amsterdam, visited Berlin, then stayed in the Czeck Republic for about two weeks (it was fantastic). This small town called Cesky Krumlov is a hidden gem of Europe; I could probably live there. After that, I was in Austria for a week, and took a day trip to Slovakia. I was in Munich for Oktoberfest, where I met up with some friends who were already traveling. After Munich, I dipped down into Italy and was there for another couple of weeks. I went up through Nice for a few days, heading west, and stopped in Monte Carlo for a day (but didn't spend the night). Then, I planned on spending a week in Spain, visiting Barcelona and Madrid, but I stayed for an extra week in a town called San Sebastian because it was awesome. After that, I returned to Paris for a week and then flew back home. To be honest, I was more than happy to get back after a few months abroad.

Austin, TX is still probably my favorite city I've been...

Subject: Yes, I'm back

Hello everyone,

I hope everyone's well, and yes, I am back! I'm afraid this is the -second- time I'm returning after a long absence, both times due to intense personal events/problems getting in the way of gaming. Needless to say, I feel terrible about leaving with such short notice. But, the point is, I've only recently gotten back into D&D; I'm running a tabletop game for the first time in forever and am looking to lurk or maybe even join a game on RDINN.

I just got back from Europe a couple weeks ago, and have started again at my old job. I have a new computer, new house (still renting), and am finished with school. After I finished school, I went through one of life's rough patches. So I decided to take what was left of my college fund and take a trip through Europe. I had a great time, and I'm now back in the swing of real life; I figure that now's probably a good time to get back into the swing of things in fantasy land. I'm not exactly setting the world on fire; those of you who know me know that I was getting a philosophy degree, and as such am now pretty much only qualified to wait tables.

In any case, I hope everyone got along fine without me and I'm looking forward to some gaming in the future!

Subject: Case Dismissed

My fellow innmates,

As you may or may not know, I was recently facing some criminal charges of which I was wrongly accused.

I'll spare you the details of the case (I think those of you who know me well already know them) - the important part is that this has loomed like a horrible shadow over my whole life for the past 5 or so months.

I'm glad to report that, as of today, it has finally been dismissed and I'm about to pursue an expunction.

It's a huge load off my back - it was really dragging me down recently with the approaching pre-trial hearing. But now that this is taken care of, expect a happier and postier Lou.

But for right now, some friends are taking me out to eat...

Laters!

Just when I thought I'd be posting today...

My cat has disappeared. He never came home last night, which is not normal in the slightest, and I fear he may have been run over...

I'm fairly distraught over this. I promised I'd get off my ass (or onto my ass, in the chair in front of the computer) and get my games back on track today, but I don't think I have it in me.

Hopefully he's alive and will show up soon, but I'm very out of it right now.

sorry, thanks for the understanding.

Everyone,

I know I've been lax to post, but RL has been kicking my ass.

I've managed to keep up with ST:OP, but I've let my two other games completely stagnate.

However, I have a 'weekend' coming up - I'm completely off from work for two days straight and I plan on posting in everything.

Sorry once again, expect to be on a better schedule when school starts.

Subject: Stan Stowbrieski

Lt. Cmdr Talon turned from where the other officers were discussing what had happened when the door open and he raised a brow when the MACO walked up to him, saluted and reported.

“Interesting,” he said at first, “Gunnery Sergerant.. where is this suspicious person now?” He wondered if this person might have anything to do with the sabotage of the Cerebeus, maybe not but it deserved checking out.

"Crewman Stan Stowbriesky of Cerberus's engineering deptament, he is in Sickbay. I have already sent a MACO to watch him personally."

Stan...Stan Stowbrieksy? Suspicious person? Kato immediately focused his attention not on the discussion, and instead on the side conversation between the Security officer and MACO. Just as he was about to pipe in, Talon was already in the process of communicating with another officer.

“Lt Myers?” Talon says hitting his commbadge, knowing that he had assigned Myers to head the detail watching sickbay.

“Yes Sir?” Myers responded.

“You have an injured crewman in Sickbay by the name of Stan Stowbriesky,” Talon says, “I want you to isolate this man as a potential threat. Secure him in a security field if you have to until he has been cleared. I want a full report from the Medical staff as soon as possible.”

“Aye Sir!” Myers acknowledges.

Talon signs off and turns his attention back to Rhiannon, “Good work Sergerant! Keep your team ready to assist if needed.”

Kato 3 immediately hit his commbadge, staring straight at Talon. "Belay that order, Lt. Myers. And please have the MACO watching Mr. Stowbriesky at the moment reassigned."

"Sir?..." Myers responds, hesitating. Then realizing that he's speaking to a superior officer, he responds sharply. "Yes, sir."

Kato 3 signs off and continues staring at Talon.

"Mr. Talon," he says confidently and with an adversarial tone, "I believe Mr. Fletcher told you to treat the survivors of that catastrophe with respect. They're probably tired and disoriented and asking them questions now will yeild nothing. Keeping security details on exhausted people - and Starfleet officers, I might add - is not productive."

Before Talon could respond, he continues after the slight pause. "Mr. Stowbriesky is not a suspicious person, nor is he any kind of threat. I can vouch for him personally. He may not always be a model officer, but I served with him on the USS Benjamin Franklin and he is loyal to the Federation and Starfleet and certainly not the kind of stuff that spies or saboteurs are made of, if I understand your implications correctly."

"Sir, do you wish me to return to the Docking Bay, go to Sick Bay, or remain here?"

The MACO addressed Talon now, looking for orders.

"Dismissed, Sergeant," he ordered. "Return to the Docking Bay."

USS Charon - Bridge – 12:30 hours

As the Charon's XO glanced at the readouts, he gave a few refining orders. "Mister Kato, take a closer look at the damaged pods, and let me know if any are serious enough to warrant quicker action on our part. Mister Kennedy, reopen the channel to Captain MacTavish."

Kato studied the data he'd fed into the computer and checked it against what the sensors were currently reading.

"No, sir," he said. "None of the pods are in imminent danger. We might beam aboard the personell from the damaged pods first, though. Just to make sure."

Kato mulled over the data one more time, the blue glow of the sensor screen illuminating his face. He stroked his beard thoughtfully, staring at the screen. It looked as if everything was in order...

Wait...

"That's not right..." Kato said, completely under his breath; he doubted anyone else would have heard him. He silently compared the data he'd just fed into the computer from his initial scans with the data currently coming in from the scans. There were 85 survivors total, and yet the computer was telling him that there were 84 humanoid vital signs scanned in total. Further complicating the matter was the fact that the sensors were picking up 85 humanoid vital signs currently...

Kato fed the data from the new scans into the computer, and punched in a command for it to analyze. In seconds, he had a new readout of the data from the scans on his screen - once again showing 84 humanoid vital signs.

He took care to scan each individual pod, doing the math in his head...yes, the total was 85.

But why was the computer, when it calculated the total lifesigns of those in the pods, registering only 84? A starship's computer being non-functional in the simplest task of adding numbers simply didn't make sense, especially since, to Kato's knowledge, everything else was functioning properly.

Kato 3 silently fed the data into his PADD.

Stardate: 2374.09.06
The Charon – Captain’s Ready Room – 13:19 hours

The door slid open, and Kato turned from his console, his eyes following the Captain as he stepped onto the bridge. He quickly returned his view to his console. The space debris they'd detected was being tractored in to the Charon. He had detected nothing more than pieces of the hull, but they might, after all, provide some clue as to what happened out there.

“Mr. Fletcher, Talon, Mr. Kato, and Jones, you’re with me. Mr. Mas’Riat, you’ve the bridge,” As the captain spoke, Kato rose and nodded to an ensign nearby who took over at his conn.

Hardly ten minutes later, Kato found himself in the mess hall, following closely behind the captain. He hadn't been on the mess hall of the Charon yet, and the decor depressed him. Captain Gavison didn't seem to care for one minute about dispelling the rumors that the Charon was a barge of death.

He was met with the sight of Commander Jack MacTavish, captain of the Cerberus, and his senior staff. He sized them all up immediately - a motley crew like that of the Charon. From the way Captain Gavison greeted MacTavish and his security officer, a cat-person much like Talon, Kato took it that they were old friends.

“There’s a lot to discuss,” Kelsey said as he motioned for everyone to be seated. “So, we’ll get the formalities out of the way forthwith.”

He sat and waited patiently as the pleasantries were exchanged, merely bowing his head slightly and smiling as the captain introduced him to the surviving staff of the Cerberus. Finally, the meat of the discussion began.

“What happened, Mac? Was it the Romulans like so many of us already believe? Mr. Kato and Talon have been working hard to put the Charon’s equipment to use in order to help with the investigation, but I’ve already received missives from Headquarters wondering after our findings, and at the risk of sounding treasonous, what I want to report back to Starfleet is that the bastards that did this are cold, and dead. There’ll be no tribunal, no Starfleet justice, here, Mac. This is Frontier Justice that we’re going to enact—“ The captain eyed each of those at the table in turn. “—and I defy anyone at this table to argue that particular with me.”

(After waiting for Captain MacTavish to reply, so as to not be rude).

"To the end of determining the culprit here, captain," Kato chimed in, "We're doing everything we can to determine the prime mover of the Cerberus' fate. We've tractored in most of the space debris, and sciences is looking it over right now. It's mostly fragments of the hull, so I'm of the opinion that our clues might be minimal. However, engineering is sending over a few extra hands to help with the analysis; we're hopeful that we'll come up with something."

(Room for interaction as you see fit)

The Lt. Commander took a breath and glanced around at the faces in the room, looking almost hesitant to speak. After a few seconds of silence, he held up his PADD.

"In addition, gentlemen," he continued, "Captain Gavison told me to scan every detail of the pods as they came in. I did, but my sensors picked up some anomolous readings concerning the lifesigns aboard the ASRVs as they came in. It's a mathematical discrepency, and one that shouldn't be a problem with a Starship's computers.

"As I fed the data from the scans into my console, it automatically computed it, adding together the number of humanoid lifesigns detected in each pod. There are 85, as we know, that survived. And individual scans detected this. However, for some reason, the computer, when the data is fed into it, reports that there are 84 total. I haven't been able to figure out why. When I scan all the pods, it reports that there are 84 lifesigns, once more. There's either some kind of sneaky glitch somewhere in the algorhythms, or there was something not quite right going on in those pods..."

Kato's voice trailed off. He almost stuttered, betraying his usual confident, optimistic tone. If Kato 3 was anything, he was efficient, and it was clear that this elusive error had baffled him. He shook his head. Turning to addressing Captain Gavison, he concluded, "I can't explain it, sir."

(Edit: error in earlier post; I read that there were 81 starfleet personelle that survived, but left out the four survivors from the Romulan Star Empire. edited to reflect this.)

Yes, you saw the thread name right.

Due to legal fees, I've been short on cash recently, and because of recent events, I had to cut down my hours to part time at work. Now, I'm back up to full time, but I'm just not making enough money to make up what I lost in my savings account.

I'm taken a (very) temporary job as a freelance process server. I don't expect this to really last very long into the next semester, depending on my coursework (I'm only taking 9 hours this semester, so it might be managable). I'm not sure how the job is going to go - I've heard from some that's it's somewhat tedious and others that some very strange stuff can happen.

The point of all of this is that I'm not going to to have as much time as I used to - which means I can't take on any new games. I'm not sure what the fate of Rome will be at the moment, I'm just not sure how feasible it is for me to run another game. I am, however, still committed to the Embodiment. I'm sorry to everyone involved in Rome - I may not have the time for it.

I hope to keep up with my current games, however; but please excuse me if I can't post as often...

Hermit crabs are good low-maintenance pets.

There's one thing to remember though - keep lots of shells of varying sizes in their habitat. They'll grow out of their current ones and want to move into new ones. Also, it helps to have some kind of miniature 'tree-like' things in the enclosure - twigs or something. In the wild, hermit crabs climb trees; if you put something for them to climb in their habitat, they'll appreciate it.

Once the channel was closed, Kelsey turned his focus to the bridge crew. “Lt. Kennedy, on screen when within range. Then begin immediate coordination with Doc Hamilton to prepare a triage in the shuttle bay. I want to make sure that every one of those that are brought aboard have a clean bill of health before they’re allowed to wander my ship. Captain MacTavish will have the diplomat’s quarters. I want a meeting with Mac and his senior staff in the Observation Lounge as soon as they’ve had a chance to settle. All senior staff will attend.

“Mr. Kato,” Kel switched his attention to the science officer. “Tone those scans. I want to know every detail of those in the ASRVs, as well as the surrounding space. You find any debris from the Cerberus and I want it brought on board for further analysis by yours, and Chief Jones’ team.”

Kato 3 nodded at the Captain's orders, but did not look away from his console. "Aye, sir," he answered firmly. "With the recalibrations, our scanners are working like a dream. I'll record anything unusual I find and have a report ready for you within the hour."

“Talon, you know what to do.”

Rising from the chair, Kelsey glanced over his shoulder to where his XO sat at the starboard wall. “Mr. Fletcher, you have the Bridge. I want to know the instant the rescue operation is a success.”

As Captain Kelsey Gavison left the bridge, Kato continued scanning, feeding all the information he was gathering into his console. As he refined his scans, he quickly made note of all the pertinent information...

15 ASRVs, cluttered in battefield formation...a few of them looked as if they had taken some light damage - probably the pods that were closest to the ship when whatever happened to it resulted in its destruction. As the Charon neared the pods, the scans more refined, he identified the pods one by one.

"ASRVs designated E-006, 008, 012 and 019 have all suffered minor damage from the blast," he announced to the bridge crew. "Pods 006 and 019 each have been losing power quickly because of the damage. Their essential systems would have failed in a few days; it's a good thing we found them when we did.

"Someone should inform medical when those pods arrive - I wouldn't be surprised if the air was starting to get thin in those pods. Medical might want to look over those individuals.

"I'll continue scanning for debris. I'm picking up some, but most of it isn't any larger than simple space trash; probably just pieces of the hull. If the captain wants all of the debris possible brought in and studied, I'd recommend trying to tractor any that we come in range of - space debris drifts easily. I'll feed the coordinates of any and all debris of the Cerberus I find into the helm console..."

He continued scanning, but the search for debris wasn't promising. It had probably all drifted off in different directions. There would be some that had drifted in the same direction as the pods, but it was likely all over the sector by now. And if a comet or solar wind swept through the area, any hope of finding significant parts of the Cerberus would be lost. Kato shook his head in frustration - the best they were likely to have was some pieces of the hull that had drifted along with the ASRVs.

And it was unlikely that they'd figure out what caused the destruction of the Cerberus from that.

Subject: The Grinning Goblin

The apparent human master and elvin slave approached the entrance of the Goblin. As they entered, a drunken sailor stumbled out the door, passing them - nearly running right into Sylla. However, seeing her apparent pure human features, noble garb and slave, he quickly bowed his head slightly, murmuring a barely audible, "Sorry missus..." from the side of his mouth and left with his head bowed. As she entered, she could feel the eyes of various barflies following her; they hardly even noticed Nyx, dismissing him as a mere elf body-slave.

However many people had been out that night at the Hydra's Breath, there were assuredly twice that many at the larger facilities of the Grinning Goblin. All the merriment and drinking one could imagine was going on, though the patrons were predominantly human, with a smattering of dwarves and a few gnomes. The smell of smoking weed was in the air, as was the smell of salt - dock workers brought their stink in with them. A few noble-types could be spotted in the crowd, but they mostly associated with their own castes...

The barkeep immediately adressed Sylla as she passed the bar, looking eager to help her. "What can I do for you, milady? We have a fine Ellisian ale tonight, for only one gold coin. In fact," he said, almost stuttering, "Why don't I buy you one on the house!" He poured her a mug with haste and placed it before her on the bar.

He was a stubbly, balding, overweight man, with dark hair that was graying on the sides and puffy, red cheeks from what must have been years of drinking. As he smiled, the two could see a set of yellowing, crooked teeth.

Apparently he needed access to free ale to attract women.

He grinned expectantly, leaning on the other side of the bar towards her. Meanwhile, Sylla could feel the eyes of the other men in the bar - if she turned down this drink, she'd almost surely be offered another.

As the two scouted the room, they saw no signs of any sneaky business - there did appear to be two strong-arm men standing guard near the stairs. However, as bar patrons were freely going up and down the staircase, it was safe to assume they were probably simple bouncers.

Their deception had worked for the time being, but what next?

((Eol: Your checks succeeded - the NPCs incurred penalties because...well, they're all checking out Spite and not you.))

Meanwhile...

Outside the Goblin, Cay watched the two enter the tavern from around the corner and Mallys kept her eyes trained the two from the alley on the other side of the street.

The Snakes were keeping their posts, alright. The wind was begining to blow outside, however, so most of the pedestrians and street-walkers were heading for a pub and staying there. A few loiterers remained, as well as the two half-elves, hiding in the shadows.

Whatever the Sea Snakes were doing out in force tonight, they were staying put...

Subject: Romans!

Everyone's sheet is in, if I'm not mistaken, save for Duncan74.

Duncan - send me yer sheet whenever you get the chance, and we'll begin.

Meanwhile, here's my character:

Decimus Flavius Felix

Decimus Felix is the son of Lucius Flavius Felix, a wealthy merchant, though of low-birth. His wife, though unknown to Lucius Felix when he married her, was infertile, and numerous attempts to continue the family line were fruitless. Eventually, copulation with a slave-girl yielded Decimus, though Lucius would pass off the child as the product of himself and his wife, wanting a male heir above nothing else. When the slave-girl protested, distraught over the fact that she could not raise her own child, Lucius had her killed to keep her quiet. As the girl’s blood was Roman enough, Decimus Felix was passed off as the natural son of Lucius Felix, and all was well.

As his business profited and he became an influential man, especially on the Aventine, Lucius Felix ran for magistrate and was elected, currying favor with senators and making payoffs to ensure his position. Lucius Felix’s true ambition was to become a Novus Homo, or new man: the first of his branch of the family to become a politician, thus ensuring that his descendants would be nobles (albeit not patricians). As such, he worked very hard to make all the right friends. Meanwhile, Decimus Felix learned from his father’s upward-clawing and greed, and became rather avaricious himself. He learned from an early age that he could, for the most part, take what he wanted from the weaker boys, and he did so. He spent some time apprenticing with a mason, but his father ultimately discouraged it, saying that while trade work was respectable, Decimus could find better profit elsewhere; in truth, he was hoping that Decimus would seek a job in politics. Eventually, Decimus began working freelance for the Aventine Collegium, mostly acting as a bodyguard or ‘strong-arm man’. While most of his comrades spent their money on whores and wine, Decimus saved his gold as his father taught him, hoping to make something of himself.

In time, Lucius Felix had positioned himself politically to run for consul, but there was much scandal over his son being a ‘knifeman’ for the collegia. Lucius Felix, seeking to reverse these rumors, pressured Decimus into joining the Roman Army, so that he could claim to be a patriot who was willing to give his son to the Republic. However, as the election neared, the rumors among other merchants and simple plebeians about the true mother of Decimus Felix reached the ears of Lucius Felix’s opponents, and the scandal of him having a suspected half-caste son prevented him from winning the election. He disowned Decimus, who had joined the army to impress his father. And, in a few short years, Decimus found himself fighting in the Gallic Wars, which was not exactly a picnic - he became bitter and resentful of his father, for whom he had sacrificed so much…and for nothing.

Years later, he received word that his father was ill and on his deathbed. His prefect would have allowed him to return to Rome so that he could visit his father before he died. Decimus refused, and his father died alone and spurned; his mother died shortly thereafter.

Now, after seven years of fighting in Gaul, Decimus is a bitter man. He is still intensely greedy – he is something of a hoarder, and he stands to inherit a fair sum from his father’s estate when he returns to Rome. He is not particularly loyal to the Republic or Caesar, but his loyalty to the coin knows no end. Part of him is remorseful that he did not become a nobleman as his father withdrew from the election, and naturally he feels somewhat guilty (though it is no fault of his) for his slave-birth. Decimus almost feels as if he accumulates enough gold, he’ll be able to buy a good name for himself. He is bloodthirsty in battle, and thinks only of profit as he slaughters his enemies; he has a knack for all manner of violence from his years of fighting and time spent in the collegium.

Because of his knack for upward-clawing and social advancement, he quickly made friends with the last Optio, Marcus Junius Virilis, and proved himself worthy on the battlefield. When Marcus Virilis was made Centurion, his cozying up to power paid off, and he was made Optio. Despite his negative personality traits, he is not unlikable; he does make friends, though loyalty is something somewhat foreign to him. He’ll follow the path that will make him the most money. Of course, this doesn’t make him stupid – he is above simple thievery or the like, as those paths could get him crucified very quickly in the Legion.

Appearance-
Age: 23 years
Hair: Standard Roman haircut; his hair is dark brown, though it is only a tinge lighter than the hair of most Romans (the slave-girl who was his mother was not completely Roman).
Eyes: Dark brown
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 220 lbs.

Decimus has a typical ‘Roman’ nose, high cheekbones, full lips and is rather average-looking in terms of attractiveness. He usually keeps a bit of stubble, but this is out of laziness, not fashion-sense. A small scar runs down his right cheek, though it is hardly visible. Decimus is well-built, but has something of a gut from drinking.

What's your character's name?

Maurius Dio

I also need you to choose three words to describe his disposition:

Pensive, Personable, Critical

How he feels about people:

Maurius is critical of governments and groups of people in general, and kind to persons in specific. He views the self-righteous paladin as just as dangerous as the diabolical villain. He is hesitant to befriend women for fear he will become romantically involved with them, something he is deathly afraid of; he is generally compassionate and personable to most people he meets however. He identifies with the common man.

What he values most: examples would include money, knowledge, power, land, love, friendship, honor, etc.

Maurius seeks to better himself by building character and fighting for the rights of the average man. In a way, he believes in a kind of honor - an ethic that guides him, dictating that he fight the good and honest fight.

The person he values most:

His late wife.

His most valued possession:

His guitar.

His general philosophy (alignment):

He believes that dogma, tradition and petty squabbles often result in harm towards the average man or woman. He thinks that nobles, the 'powers that be' and power-mongers have always, in their squabbles, hurt the commoners the most. His philosophy is embodied in the African proverb - "When elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers." He roams the land, seeking to use his talents to fight for the helpless or meek, or else to tell their tale in song and verse.

If an alignment from the traditional D&D system would have to be chosen, it would be Chaotic Good or Chaotic Neutral.

Patron deity:

Nearly equal respect, reverance, admiration and/or (occasional) worship for Telamor, Shinara. Maurius believes that men alone can conquer all the world's monsters (whether physical or metaphorical) and that the gods are merely guides.

That's it for me - have I PMed you my background/description yet? I went ahead and sent it regardless - there's always that delete button if I sent it already.

Because you're a zombie, Merideth, and you can't stop thinking about that kind of thing.

Why can't I find my keys?
