I don't think it's breaking the fourth wall, it's Bob fixing the book because he dropped it and pages got mixed up in the confusion (no they're not numbered). Am I right?

Kyrie was glad that the kobold still lived. At least one was escaped from death. However, even after it drank the vial, was it completely okay? Kobold insides could be different than other peoples. Cold blooded, right? Kyrie paused. No point in worrying about it right now, and if the little guy was still in poor condition, he'd probably say so.

Though with all the happiness that the lil guy was emitting, she wouldn't have been surprised if it suppressed any poor condition effects that he might otherwise still be feeling. In any case, it was probably about time to get everyone out and into the sun. Too much stormy weather and being cramped under the tree probably wasn't going to be too good on people's outlooks. Best get out soon. But the somewhat-chasm in the previous room might've become slightly more unstable with the centipede's fall (sorry Mr. Centipede, but I could not allow you to hurt my friends. Even if we do look like bugs to you). Either way, there was only one major unknown left, which was 'what is up ahead?'

"I'll help make sure the way is clear. That one mite ran ahead, didn't it? May be another ambush or something." Kyrie noted, patting her shovel and putting it back in place over her shoulder before getting ready to climb, taking point at the front and waiting for light before continuing.

Subject: Re: Dieties

There doesn't seem to be many (if any? I don't recall any) references to anything on the scale of dieties in Redwall lore either. For the most part in that setting, there are figures of legend, ie people of note from far off history, that are referenced in part of invocation of good luck or safe journey, or are seen in visions.

In general, it seems to be along the lines of smaller scale beings of note, like the founders of various places. I don't know if Ayrn's aiming for that sort of route with this setting, but I figured I'd put my two pinecones in with what I remember.

Subject: Oh dear goodness, such nostalgia

Wow, I sure wasn't expecting this when I opened the thread out of curiosity. Quite the surprise (wot wot ).

If you're using Redwall as an inspiration, perhaps it should be noted what the common physical capabilities of each race are?

Assuming Redwall as the foundation:
  • Badger - Larger than the others, badgers are noted for their strength.
  • Hare - Notably dextrous and fast, but with strength behind those paws. Also a voracious appetite.
  • Hedgehog - Notably sturdy, able to curl up into a ball when in danger for defense by their spines in exchange for mobility.
  • Mice - Notably adaptable to different places and different ways of life
  • Mole - Capable of digging. Less sturdy than others, but nimble.
  • Otters - Very much at home around ponds and rivers. Their physical nature leaning towards swimming also makes them fairly strong, but not as nimble on land as they are in water.
  • Squirrel - Almost always great climbers, nimble and flexible, with a keen eye when it comes to locating the next claw-hold or foothold.

Ayrn, if these are inaccurate for your setting, please let me know and I'll remove these descriptions

I haven't decided the 'what' yet, but I definitely want to be a part of this. So much nostalgia. (Yes, I have most if not all of the books in that series )

Jon put up his hand, “Miss I don’t mean to be rude but you and the rest of crew need to leave Stephanie and me for a bit.”

Catie bit her lip. She was not sure it would work, but from the looks of things, the captain was not one to be distracted. She shot Stephanie an apologetic 'don't get in trouble over me' look as she picked up her shoulder bag and left the infirmary.

In the hall, she rubbed the back of her head. There probably wasn't a better way to deal with that, but it was going to gnaw at the back of her mind for a while. Still, there wasn't much she could do at this point for Stephanie.

"F5AA113" Catie murmured, committing to memory everything she saw inside the infirmary, namely where things were located, just in case they were needed later before she had a chance to get better acquainted with the room.

Catie looked at all of the other crew members present. Seeming as she met them all, it was only fair that they be committed to memory as well. "F8-B1" She murmured, memorizing in particular the faces of the people she just met.

"So, has this happened before or is this a first?" Catie asked, "If they might be a while, perhaps we should move someplace more comfortable." She suggested, "This vessel does have a galley, right?"

That was certainly not nice. Friendly wooden handhold was not so sturdy as it looked. At least she had managed to not fall, but Kyrie glared at the offending knot.

"Wood should not lie." Kyrie said, as though she were scolding a child.

Seeing Kyrie almost plummet into the chasm made the dwarf's heart skip a beat. How had he not noticed the feaux roots before? Cursing himself under his breath for not being more observant, he called out to Kyrie to reassure her. "Take your time lass! We don't need a farm girl falling into the chasm and breaking a leg!"

Kyrie couldn't help but laugh, "I'm alright!" She called back, "And I've had a leg broken before. Healed up pretty quick actually. Mah-i was surprised."

The noises that were reaching her ears, however, made her not want to slow down. There was something going on. Something that struck a chord in her. Sounds of pain. It was not right. But she was over here, not over there. Kyrie needed to get there fast.

As soon as she reaches solid ground, she reaches over her shoulder. Shields only help when you already have the people to protect behind you. The creatures that may need protection were ahead. And to get there, they'd have to get through whatever it was that was hurting them.

In this case, the best way to defend was with a swift, strong attack. Thus, as she advanced, Kyrie drew her most trusted possession besides her pendant - her shovel.

"Whatever is going on up ahead, I don't like the sounds of it." She muttered, advancing as quickly as she could.

Persephone, Eavesdown Docks, Destiny cargo Bay, 7:00 pm ST

When the away team arrives at the ship, the cargo bay is open and as you enter you can hear the sound of conversation coming from the infirmary. Grace, Stephanie and a young lady none of you have seen before are there. As soon as they see you come in, the conversation stops. Stephanie stands and walks over to beside Jon, and says. “Everyone. This is Catie Yueshi. Catie, this is Jon, Angela, Tess and JC. Catie is a colleague of mine that is well versed with prosthetics and genetics. I thought she might be able to help us so I invited her to join us.”

At her introduction, Catie immediately stands and gives a formal bow, before looking up and guaging everyone's reactions. Given what she could pick up from Grace, her assignment was not something that was common knowledge. She wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but she suspected there'd be an amount of confusion. She just did what she would have done during a job interview, smiles politely while waiting for them to fully register her presence.

(assuming a what? Huh? What do you mean?)

“She needs a place to stay Jon." Stephanie said in that tone that brokered no argument. "Much like many on this ship already, she needs a place where she can stay off the grid and out of the watchful eye. Of course, if this is a problem, I am sure that there are other ships that could find room for two well trained medical personnel.”

Well, so much for subtlety. Granted, she didn't know what sort of dynamic Stephanie and Jon had between them. For all she knew, perhaps this was normal. However, Catie intuitively didn't like the direction the conversation seemed to be taking. Not that she minded if it came to trying to find (another) part time job. After however long it has been now, she was used to that. She had to keep her options open after all, but to do that here, a bit of de-fusion seemed necessary.

"As Stephanie mentioned, I have a background in medical science, but I wouldn't say I'm too specialized. I have had numerous part time jobs, including being a waitress, chef, tech support aide, and nurse." Catie began, deciding to bring some of the main details forward so that they could consider her job application even though they weren't aware that it was incoming.

(presuming that she can see some leftover bread crumbs on people's clothing, since bread crumbs like to linger)

"I'd offer dinner to demonstrate, but I can see some crumbs leftover on your clothes, so I'm guessing you might have already eaten." Catie smiles again.

(if there's shown surprise that she saw them or someone asks her directly about how she saw that so fast, she responds with the following)

"I have always had keen eyesight," Catie replies, "I can say it definitely comes in handy when you need to be attentive to detail, whether in a restaurant or in the lab. People tend to be nicer if you are friendly first, after all. It certainly affects tips."

(and because it logically follows the above and someone might ask if she's good with a gun after talking about her eyesight, she'd respond with)

"Not really." Catie shakes her head, "I mean, it's not that I can't use a gun. I actually have one for self defense if needed, but I'm not a highly trained markswoman." She shrugs.

While to the point, Stephanie's manner of persuasion isn't Catie's preference. I think she'll probably try to defuse the situation, perhaps using an info-dump as a distraction (and yes, she used that tactic on Grace too as the very first thing she said)

And then Jon will be involved in the just about on-the-job interview for the position that Catie will be taking up which he is probably unprepared for...

That was not good. The creatures in front of them that weren't slain were fleeing, yes, but the 'giggler', as Rae mentally labelled it, had struck faster than any of them were prepared for.

"Hey! Are you okay?" Rae asked after slashing the creature off Ta'Arms. She snapped her fingers in front of him, before holding the pommel of her blade in front of his mouth. A slight misting confirmed his breathing at least.

Rae gritted her teeth as she heard more rustling. That could only mean more creatures. She tested the man's weight, with one hand under his armpit. It was hardly an accurate test, but it was still enough to confirm what she knew in the back of her mind; carrying him would not be an option here.

"I'm not strong enough to carry him." Rae noted, "We'll need to defend him until he recovers."

Raising her shield, she took up one of the two points, where the sounds seemed like they were going to come to. Rae steeled herself, setting her feet firmly onto the worn dirt that was their road. She would not let them strike down any of her friends, especially not one that couldn't defend themselves (even if only temporarily), not while she could help it.

(Similar tactic as before, try to give them a target to keep them there rather than attacking the others, and slash at the legs of ones that try to just go past her. Attacks defensively if there's too many or she's flanked.)

“By join do you mean for a short period of time or as part of the crew?” asked Grace stiffly. Normally if new members were joining, Jon would give her heads up. If Jon thought that the sink or swim technique would work on Grace’s ability to make friends, he was in for a world of surprise…

Catie tilted her head and smiled, "I think it's just part time for now, perhaps full time if I make a good impression." She motioned towards Stephanie, "Stephanie seemed to suggest that I should consider staying this time."

(Presuming confirmation from Stephanie)

Catie saw Grace's reaction, even as fast as she tried to replace it. Catie could tell that Grace was not comfortable. It would probably take a while, with her being the newest member and everything. Still, to receive trust, one must be willing to trust. It was a two way connection.

“Tea sounds like a great idea, but before we do that, I want to get to know you, Catie.” said Grace sitting down beside the new girl. A little smirk was on her face as she looked at Catie.

Catie gave a smile in response, nodding. Given what Stephanie had told her, she wasn't sure what to expect, but if it was going to be direct questions, then she could handle herself.

“If you don’t mind me asking, are you a traveling type of gal or are you just running away?”

Catie leaned back and visibly thought for a moment, "I don't see why it can't be both." She replies, "When you don't have a home, you're not tied to just one place, and traveling lets you experience more. But the reason for me not having a home," She raises a finger to her lips, "That's... a secret."

She paused a moment before she laughed, "Well, not entirely." Catie looked over at Grace, "I guess I grew up. I'd consider it like after when parents and teenagers sometimes fight. I just left, and haven't found a new home yet." She added honestly. It wasn't a plea, or an attempt to draw on pity, it was just the truth.

It was a gamble, but based on that smirk given to her, Catie got the impression that Grace wanted more than information on her background. Perhaps it was an invitation to a game, a challenge. Perhaps she wanted to test how Catie would respond. Similarly, Catie paid close attention to Grace. Stephanie had mentioned that Grace was a bit paranoid. Either way, Catie was curious how Grace would react to the claiming of a secret, and then revealing it anyway, even in part. She just hoped that Grace would recognize it as an extension of trust.

(Following is just in case Grace ends up at a bit of a loss as to what to ask or say next)

"You know, Stephanie mentioned that it's as though you are mentally linked to this vessel." Catie brought up, "I've heard of that sort of thing before, but never really met someone who could. What I would like to know is, do you think they have feelings? Even if it's not really like ours." That was one thing she was always curious about, but never had someone she could ask. Anima. Souls of the non-organic. Souls of course could not be measured, let alone identified, so they had no way to be proven or disproven.

It was also perhaps a good way to bring up a subject that was closer to Grace. A strange topic, but Catie was a strange person, and Stephanie, Grace, the others too, would have to get used to it.

I think Ta'Arms needs to take it easy with the meat in the future

My thoughts then are we set up a defensive perimeter of people around Mr. Statue until he (hopefully) recovers, and given it was the 'giggler' that had that effect, have people prepared to attack that one first to try to prevent another victim.

Then the other zombies are just zombies until proven otherwise.

As a farmer, there was something to be said for when muck was muckier than dealing with errant weeds or working with animals in rain and fog. Somehow, this place seemed to be able to give that sensation. It wasn't pleasent.

Still, these creatures were clearly too used to their dark and dreary environment. They didn't like the light.

"Miguel, if you can, try putting light on my shield." Kyrie murmurred, "They don't seem to like light, so if I can bring it to them, all the better for us."

((slight delayed action for him to be able to unless he says that he doesn't have that ability))

That done, the time was now to take the fight to them (and to give the people behind her more room). Kyrie moves up as she can to engage the closest one that drew a melee weapon.

Stephanie brought Catie to the infirmary and pulled up a chair for both of them. "Grace is a bit different. Amazingly intelligent, gifted with anything mechanical but not the most social if people. She has some issues with paranoia but frankly, it has saved our lives a number of times so although it sounds like crazy conspiracy theatre - don't dismiss her. She can be very loyal if you can become her friend."

Catie nodded, "Can't fault that. I have my own slight tendencies myself, if you remember." She gave a sheepish smile, "It's part of why I usually keep moving."

There was the sound of the lift and soon a young lady appeared in the doorway of the infirmary. Grace was young, very pretty and had the look of a doctor examining a bug under a glass when she looked at Catie.

"Grace, this is Catie Yueshi. She is a colleague of mine who is an expert on genetics and prosthetic implants. I asked her to join us in order to get more help with JC and Angela. She is a good friend and I trust her Grace, so you can as well."

Catie bowed her head in greeting as Grace entered, before looking up and giving a smile, "Other previous occupations include waitress, chef, nurse, janitor, programmer, and tech support aide. All part time, and not all at once of course." She chuckled, "Although tuition certainly tried to get me to at one point." She motioned towards another chair, beckoning Grace to sit if it made her more comfortable.

Catie had to admit that the look that Grace was giving her was a bit intimidating, but it wasn't too different than a check in by senior personnel... Catie felt her face pale slightly, but she took a breath, forcing the thought out of her mind.

F5B2100 Catie thought, bringing up the memory of the layout of a restaurant she worked at once. She looked around, before looking at Stephanie, "Do you happen to have a kettle? Perhaps we could have some tea." She suggested. Might as well try to make everyone comfortable, especially Grace, as best she could anyway.

#8 looks good for Catie. It's on the left side. Or right side if looking towards the back. Which means, if a ship's forward direction is considered 'north', the flipped compass puts #8 as towards the 'east'.

I don't expect that to make much sense right now.

A string of bad luck. Well, perhaps it was just the nature of things, after all, being a vagabond taking work where she could, Catie knew this was not an unlikelihood. Being unemployed for a longer amount of time than normal didn't mean much. At least, that's all Catie thought it was, until she received the message from Stephanie. It had been a while since they were last in contact, but the timing couldn't have been more perfect. Destiny indeed. There was only the faint hesitation at the back of her mind. Stephanie's wording suggested that it might be a more permanent place for Catie to stay. Yet, there was no way she could turn it down. She also knew Stephanie wouldn't have suggested it if she didn't think it was in her own interests.

My research... Catie had wondered, They're not exactly common things. I wonder, what is it that I could help with?

Between curiosity and a sense of obligation to Stephanie, it was enough to hold her hesitation in check. So she traveled once more...

* * *

Catie had to admit, the Destiny drew her in. There was something about it. Something she couldn't quite put her finger on. Perhaps it was that sort of energy. Names are symbols, but names also have power.

She didn't have long to think about it, however, her baggage trailing behind her as Catie spotted the gangplank, and Stephanie there to greet her. Catie quickly walked up to give Stephanie a friendly hug.

"Feels like it's been a long time." Catie said, "How have things been?" She asked.

[Presuming a return of greeting and invitation inside]

"I probably should drop these off on board before I leave them outside." Catie chuckled, following Stephanie inside the Destiny, and looking around, taking in much of the detail, "I have to admit, I wasn't sure what to expect by the description in your message, but she is a very unique vessel. A curious air."

[Presuming she asks for clarification]

"I'm not exactly sure. Could be my imagination, or could be a feeling that there's more than you greeting me." Catie replied, before shrugging, "Either way, I suppose I should place these somewhere before you bring me up to date."

[Presuming slight surprise at Catie getting to the point so to speak so fast]

"Well, it has been a very long time since I was involved in something related to my research. I guess I kind of missed it." Catie admitted, before looking along the inner corridor, "Was there a room already assigned to me?" She asked.

Foul creatures. The figures had been hoped to be simply travellers, although perhaps ailed ones, but instead, it became all too clear what their real natures were when the distance between the two groups closed. The atmosphere grew tense, neither seemingly acting towards the other, until a single sound broke the tension. Everything then happened at once.

Rae gritted her teeth, So be it, this battle is joined. There was no backing down now.

Rae drew her blade, her eyes narrowing as she focused. She could hear some of the actions of her companions around her. A song of battle begun by the blade maiden to her right, her form far more elegant than Rae ever could be. Words and prayer of power invoked behind her as Rae stepped forward, matching her pace to the advance of the other two warriors. Hopefully it'd be timed such that they'd meet their foes after magic and missile landed. Together they would form a wall of wood and steel, by which to keep these foes back. At least, that was what she hoped.

In her mind, the world faded until only the group of companions, the road beneath their feet, and the creatures remained. Rae would try to keep track of their movements, and by her will, she would keep the others safe as best as she could.

((Rae is going to try to keep the creatures back as best as she can, slashing with her blade at ones that try to get past her, targeting their legs if possible to hinder their movement, and using her shield to aid in her own defence. If she needs to, she'll step to try to put herself in the way of ones trying to pass. Once she's certain that she has and can keep the attention of the ones targeting her, she'll attack defensively if there's too many or if she's flanked, otherwise she'll attack normally with her blade. Rae might try to bash at the gibbering ghoul's head with her shield in an attempt to perhaps slightly stun it, but only if she has a clear shot and isn't too threatened.))

"Stop, my friends," He pleaded, looking to the others for signs of uncertainty in their actions. "We know not for certain the nature of these travelers. They could just be weary, or ill. To advance upon them with weapons drawn could have us mistaken for brigands. We should be looking to help them, not scare or provoke them."

Rae gave a reassuring smile, "I know, and that is why only my shield is ready. My blade remains at my side." She indicated the blade, drawn yes, but tip pointed to the road below, "I do not seek the first blow, should one occur." Her face fell a bit to a more passive look, "You should remember that I don't do that."

Hearing En'Aranthea's words, she nodded, deciding to leave her blade loose in its sheath, shield still raised as she took up the left of En'Aranthea's position.

"My shield is ready. I just pray it's an unnecessary precaution." Rae murmured.
