Topic: (least) Favorite Character Death
Subject: Hey VW !! (?)

Your rogue died gloriously, though, didn't he? I had to laugh because his death reminded me of a campaign where I was a player. We had (at the time) seven players and and the DM. I believe all of us were about sixth to eighth levels and had been traipsing about hunting a marauding green dragon that seemed to have summer and winter homes in different areas. Anyway, we found it, and we had an epic battle that all of us wish we hadn't had. But we just couldn't retreat and have it known that we ran from a dragon! No way, not after all the boasting we did! (see? it's easy to digress, Olan !!)

So we stayed, and began falling, one by one. Those still able to fight were doing damage, but the dice dieties were angry with all of us that day. And some of us were in the periphery of more than one blast of the dragon's breath after we fell. As each character fell, the DM sent the player out of fhe room and maintained a closed-door policy until the entire group was killed. After all, since the characters were "out of it" so should the players be. We didn't have a problem with that, because he was a good DM and this particular campaign was really good. But, once outside the door, and as the group grew one by one, we all discussed this tactic of his of killing of an entire party. We were -- to a person -- incensed that he would kill us off like that and ruin a good story line.

To make a long story short (too late!), at one point, the only one left with the dragon was a thief, a generic-as-you-can-make-them thief. And he seemed to last the longest alone with the dragon. If he was dead, why didn't someone come out so we could go in and hang the DM? Finally the thief's player stuck his head out the door and said we could come in. Oh, were we angry! The DM informed us that we were all alive and concious, but sleeping. What? Was this all a mass hallucination? A bad common dream forced upon us by magic? Here, the DM turned the story over to the thief's player, who informed the rest of us, as he informed the players as they awoke, that he had managed to kill the severely weakened and damaged dragon -- with hand crossbow bolts! It took all of his quiver but one, from around a corner of a passage. He had two bolts in a row -- in a row! -- that hit full 20's. Both were on called shots at the eye to hit the brain! Any way the dragon's dead, he had nursed us back to health (or thereabouts) by pilfering supplies from the wagon we had brought and from our own packs. Elapsed time for the party's "useless delvers" status? Total seven days.

From then on out the thief demanded that, not only were we to be more respectful to him for saving our collective backsides, we were to refer to him henceforth as "Wyrmsdeath". He became insufferable as a character, but it made for good roleplay.

I know. I didn't really die, but it all played out so well that I thought I had, and didn't like the method at the time. ...

Topic: Evil Campaign
Subject: I also agree -- kinda -- yes and no -- maybe -- sorta

Alignment is not overrated if you play it as if the character simply 'knows' his or her way of thinking and acting is the "right" way. Evil characters can see themselves as the "good" guys because they induce a little "real world" suffering into the lives of others. The good alignments can be seen as "evil" or "bad" guys, because they are against thie sort of behavior. It's a simple turn of the tables.

In a "good" campaign, the "evil" guys are the baddies, to be eliminated or made to pay for their transgressions. In an "evil" campaign, what's to keep the evil party from having the same attitude? The labels "good" and "evil" are from an "outside" or "objective" viewpoint. From a subjective viewpoint, they mean the same thing to either side. Evil looks at good as being evil, and good looks at evil as being evil ...

Dogfish watches the priest leave and shakes his head, a little confused. The priest knew Agela. If they both worked in the same place, why didn't she do what the priest did? May be she couldn't. Yeah. She had said she could only do so much. But what she did do was pretty good. He does move toward the man when he beckons, but pauses for a few seconds first to let the guy know that he is coming because he wants to, not because the man could just order him around.

[[ The intended message of the pause may be lost on anyone watching, but it is enough for Dogfish to have shown the guy, in his own fashion, that he wasn't just some lackey to be bossed around. ]]

Listening to the man intently, he nods when the man pauses and says, Waitaminnit. The others gotta hear this, in case I miss somethin'. 'Sides, like you said, they're in on it, too. Uhh, Agela? Shan? 'Loky? This here guy has somethin' to say. Says it's about a deal. And some rewards. You's all wanna come and lissen? 'Cause I'm sure interested. His face showed more interest and genuine humor than any of them have seen so far, and lit up even more when he said "deal" and "rewards" ...

Hearing the short exchange between the elven women and the "fate" comment from Lar'd, Grakk grunts softly in assent and agreement. Brahm seems to accept the new female and then just as quickly dismiss her. Grakk thinks that's odd, because the dwarf has so far been likely to "meet-n-greet" everyone with cheerfulness. As for himself, he says, "I, for one, welcome the aid. There's more safety in a larger group. My masters are fond of saying that distrust is a tool that can unravel the strongest of ties, or dissolve the strongest of bonds. So I'll trust her as I trust all of you, until that trust isn't deserved any more. "

When Aldaris tells the group what he thinks about the broken thing they find in the alcove the "new member" was in, Grakk is surprised at the knowledge gained from the cloaked one's intent examination. But since he has no reason to question it, he accepts it as truth and tries to remember most of the information. As he lets everyone else pass by him so he can fall into the rear, he notes the amount of weaponry carried, and thinks amusedly that the poor creature that threatened this party was likely to end up as stew fixin's.

He carries his staff either cross-wise in front of him in both hands, or parallel to the floor at his side in one hand when he needs the other free. He tries to keep his staff from tapping the floor. Brahms armor is making enough noise ...

Topic: Age of Worms Main thread
Subject: Grakk has your back

Hmm ... tubes in the walls. The other ends of them have to be somewhere where the sound starts. He keeps that in mind to pass on to the party when the opportunity arises. It's also interesting to him that the patterns of shapes indicate a tomb or some kind of burial place. Out of the corner of his eye he sees a bright light appear and turns briefly to see what it is. Seeing the dwarf with his mace lit up on the end and looking like he's headed for something with a purpose, he stands, thinking he's not going to get much more out of these marks. Not yet. But he will try and remember at least some of the pattern here to see if it repeats elsewhere in this place.

When Grakk hears the words "Alms for the poor ...", he turns slowly to see if he can locate the source. He doesn't, but he looks just in time to see Trillian enter one of the side openings and Lar'd Ner stop and stand at the opening where he can watch within it and maintain sight of the party, too. Lar'd Ner has his sword drawn, so he figures the two of them have it handled. Lar'd seemed to be focused on being watchful and wary, and Grakk was glad of that, for he also felt the need to protect the rest of the group, but could not be everywhere at once. He was also glad that he was relatively unencumbered with weaponry and armor. While he lacked the protection of Lar'd or Brahm, he felt that his ability to move quickly because of that lack of extra weight might give him his own sort of advantage. He grunted softly, and nodded to himself, thinking ( but I can't get full of myself. he is most likely as capable as I am, maybe more so.)

Then he hears the voice of the female elf who went in ahead of Lar'd say, "Over here we have company". If he had not been looking toward the area where she was, he would have had to hunt for her when she spoke. Good as his hearing was, sound in here seemed to echo around a lot. He picks up his ironwood staff and quietly moves toward Lar'd, watching him for a clue, any indication, of danger or otherwise ...
