"Do not descend to deep into the cave, for it would be folly ..."

Grakk heard the words, and agreed, but kept silent. Then he saw the wolves enter and pass the party without challenging them, thinking, ( Okay. That's odd. ) They all seemed to be carrying prey from the night's hunt. All except one, who looked at the party, seemingly without concern and without pausing. He watched to see which opening they entered and made a mental note of it. Aldaris had sent his undead companion to take position before him and readied himself, blade drawn and behind a shield. It seemed to Grakk that since the wolves were not concerned about the party, then the party need not be concerned either -- yet.

Once the wolves pass, he moves to the wall to the right of the entrance and looks for a place where the bands of patterns seem to be the clearest, then bends to squint at the pattern(s) in the dim green light, looking for something recognizeable. He looks for about 3 minutes [or whatever amount of time he is allowed], moving back and forth along the area with the brightest colors.

[If he finds a recgonizeable pattern, sequence, or language within 3 minutes]
He calls out softly, "Hey. Over here. I think I found something "

[If he is given 3 minutes and finds nothing of any use or recgonizeable]
He moves to the center of the corridor and waits for suggestions from the party, standing sideways to the entrance so that he can turn his head to look at it or to keep track of party movements.

[If he is not given time to look, i.e., the party decides to move on]
He shrugs, brushes the symbols briefly with his fingertips, and falls in at the rear of the "marching order"

[I don't think this falls under the purview of the Search skill, but if necessary, I will edit to include the 10 rolls per minute searching]

Subject: in the out door

The words of Master Tong Lung come unbidden, yet as softly as if the Master himself were standing next to him, offering a helpful suggestion: ( Combat is similar to mathematics: finding a solution to a problem with two known elements is simple. Solving a problem with only one element known means you have to solve two problems at once, one for the uknown to become known, then for the answer. )

The whispered suggestion to move inside was almost missed due to the cries of the night. But, if inside, things might be simpler. Grakk backtracked to his backpack [tongue-twister?], picked it up, and moved to the interior of the cave, but not directly following the person who had suggested the move. Instead, he moved to one side and out of sight of the entryway from outside and watched where Lar'd was headed. He would wait until all the others went that direction and quietly bring up the rear.

[Agela] The tall man here is going to move you to a bed .. ok She nodded at the half-orc to go ahead and pick up the man ...

[Ralnalgo] The dark haired elf suddenly burst in through the door ...

While Agela was speaking to the man to calm him, Dogfish moved a few tables together to place the man on until the barkeep arrived with the priest. This way they wouldn't have to squat down to help him any more. At Agela's nod, Dog bent and, with surprising ease and care, lifted the man to carry him to the makeshift cot. He was just placing the man on the tables when the door opened to let in some more fresh cool air, and the elf who had left earlier to find a priest entered. Dog nodded to him. "The healer says so far, so good. Barkeep went to get a priest. Says he knows everyone in this town. Says to help ourselves to the bar, if we wanna."

[If Ralnalgo comes in with a priest, Dog grimaces and steps back to make room for the priest to do his thing. If he comes back without a priest, Dog just steps back and moves toward the bar, out of the way. Either way, he keeps a sharp eye on the man he had just moved.]

When he stepped into the image, Grakk had fully intended to look about to see where they were. But having their arrival greeted with the cries of the animals that seemed to surround them, he knew quickly that, although hauntingly beautiful, there was danger for one who strayed too far alone even for the likes of himself. And capable as he felt, he would not match known strength against that of the unknown. So he went all of ten paces before he turned to see the others moving toward the dimly glowing entrance of the cave. He paused only long enough to figure out that the cries were getting closer, then also turned to approach the opeining. He reached behind him to touch the two nunchaku that were tucked into his sash at his back and , with the other hand, clenched his fist around the ironwood quarterstaff he carried.

He placed his backpack just outside and to the right of the entrance, then moved outward, staying to the right side of the entryway's path to stop almost 10 feet away from the glowing maw. He gripped the staff and stood at the ready. Suddenly, a thought struck him,nd he slowly turned, narrowing his eyes to see in the near-darkness, looking in the opposite direction that Brahm was facing, scanning high and low, side to side, for movement or sounds he could identify. He knew that, although his clothing was dark, his light-colored visible skin would be visible beacons to those who saw in in the contrasting shades of black and white, like his own night-vision. But he was here now, and would stay until it was not wise to do so.

Grakk took the proffered potions from his host and even tried to smile while he did so. He wasn't going to be overtly rude to the mage, but he really had no intention of using this "quick out" provided by Allustan. Unless for the benefit of the group, of course. It had already become one aspect of this "Test" or "Challenge", as he referred to it, for him to complete this task and return here -- on his own power. If he took the "easy way", where was the test of any of his abilities or skills?

Then Allustan waved at the mirror again and the scene changed to a woodsy, hilly kinda area with dark undergrowth surrounding and -- mostly -- hiding an entrance leading underground.

"... look deeply into that portrait and the magic will do the rest ..."

( See? No test of stamina, strength, and resolve to get there. The easy way. ........ Now hold it. This guy knows things, so maybe the task itself will be test enough. ) Grakk had never been one to accept most things just because others believed them, but at this point, he didn't see much choice. And there was also the fact that if he didn't go along with this, he didn't know where the others would be and might not find them. By not going this way, he would be locking himself out of the "mission". Grakk grunted softly, frowning.

Then he turned to look at the picture shown and, as he looked he felt as if he was being lifted out of his seat gently, then being thrown toward the place he was viewing --- He snapped back and shook his head, watching some others step through, and into the picture. One promptly moved to one side and out of view when he had passed through. ( Okay, so this is how we get there. I ain't gettin' left behind. ) He stood and left his chair where it was, striding forward toward, and then through, the portal. He immediately dropped into a defensive stance, for no reason he could think of. But something had triggered the wariness. Grakk went the opposite direction of the man he had watched move out of sight earlier, cautiously performing his own "walkabout" of the area. Not necessary to focus on being silent, not yet. Just be quiet -- and alert ...

"... it's nice to meet you too friend, what was your name again?"

Dog snapped out of his reverie. He looked at the soft-spoken one, nodded, and said, "Shan". He then turned his gaze to the healer and nodded again. In the same, low-pitched rumbling voice, he intoned: "Agela". Hooking a thumb to his own chest, he said. "Dogfish. Like dog and fish put together. So you just let me know when you wanna move this here guy.".

"... I'm sure that if this man survives he will repay you for the antidote in the very least ...."

The odd thing was that the healer didn't seem to look at Dogfish like he was some sorta ogre or somethin' like'at. It didn't seem to bother her that he grew his looks to be like this on purpose so some wouldn't get too friendly. And if she thought he was gonna let the guy outta his sight until he got a chance to talk to him, she was so wrong !! But the guy was hurtin' and he wouldn't say nothin' to him -- not yet.

Another bright light shown in the nearly empty cavern of Dog's cranium: "Ummm, if ya want, I'm pretty sure I can carry him where he needs to go, and save tryin' ta load him onna horse, or like that."

Grakk waited for a while then shrugged his shoulders and grinned at Brahm. After a while two others entered their new "benefactor's" house. One asked if anyone knew why they were all here. Grakk just looked at him and shrugged again, lifting his hands from his sides slightly and then dropping them again. There seemed to be more not-humans than humans, and the not-humans, including Grakk himself, were an awfully strange lot. Not long after the last person entered, their host himself, one Allustan, came in and introduced himself, then asked the people gathered to follow him to a larger room, all set up for meetings like this, it seemed to Grakk. Allustan spoke of the artifact the "history guy" mentioned. And said he wanted them to beat the others to it and bring it back. One of the late-comers said somethin' about he'd go and help defend, but would not get involved other wise. To this, Grakk shoved up his bottom lip and raised one eyebrow, unable to understand why the man wouldn't go for it all. But defense was good. And the guy didn't look like the type to back off because he was afraid of somethin'. So maybe he had some religious thing that kept him from doing what Brahm's religion said was okay.

But they were being hired to beat the other three. That was all Grakk needed to hear, but still he waited for a good piece of five minutes after Brahm announced that he was in before he stood up himself. "Gods? Not likely. Fate or Fates? Don't necessariy believe in them either. It's just a coinsidd-, co-inkydin--, I just happened to be here when all of this happened. I like a challenge. This looks and feels like a challenge. I'll take the challenge."

Once Jeeves had revealed himself -- itself -- whatever, Grakk thought ( whoa! now that is different! no wonder he don't speak. ) He looked away, then did a double-take before coughing and speaking out loud. "Ya know? I just thought of somethin'. We was brought here for a reason, we met for a reason. To learn somethin'. So why not start learning 'bout each other? I can start it..."

In the brighter light of the abode, Grakk's appearance is strikingly odd, but he seems comfortable with himself. His head is shaven except for a tuft at the back of the crown of the head. This tuft is only long enough to stand straight out from the scalp, and held in that manner by a dark purple fabric belt at the base. He knows that, with his appearance, it looks odd, at the very least. The clothing he wears is of the finest linen, not satin or silk. Black, with loose sleeves and legs bound at the joints to prevent biinding, the material has dark purple dragons and monkeys embroidered everywhere. The dark colors contrast with his light-colored, pale grey skin and light blue eyes.

"Me? My Momma had what they called "a gifted code" in her. I still don't know what that means. I know my skin is kinda light for my sort, and so are my eyes. From her, I guess. I just know that it meant that I couldn't stay where I was and live. By myself and no food, I hiked my mountains to a monastery I knew about to ask for a few scraps of food. Probably never heard of it. It's the monastery of the Sapphire Dragon."

Unsmiling, but light of voice, he seems to be quite serious in his effort to inform.

"The monks there took me in and changed my life from what it might have been to what it is. Along with some other stuff, they taught me to keep what I wanted of my heritage, on either side, and push away the things what I didn't want. I have kinda come to terms with how I deal with what I know of myself and my former life. Sometimes I slip, and my blood gets the best of me, but it's getting easier to handle. When I do slip, I can be a unknown and kinda violent.

I learned a style of combat at their school they call the Cholein Dragon style. But I changed it some to fit me, who and what I am. As a matter of fact, I just left The Fist of the Monkey School there to deliver some messages to some temples. That's why I stopped here. There's one of' 'em in town, but I ain't been there yet. And some of the visits I made wasn't easy. I got eight to visit, and the one here is number six. I don't even know what the messages say. If I was supposed to know, my masters woulda told me."

"Oh. And the name is Grakk. Whoa! That's more talking in one sitting than I've done in a long, long time. And I came here to get information from you lot!" He smiles and chuckles, low and deep, then falls silent, obviously waiting expectantly ...

The ummm ... Brahm was speaking and Grakk noticed a strange look appear on the white elf's face.( idjit! it's Aldaris! Aldaris! ) He had seen looks kinda like that twice before, on the faces of magic-guys who said they were "talking" to someone by just thinking Grakk always thought that was sorta creepy, putting your thinking in somebody else's head. His thinking was his own and he liked it that way.

But then ummm ... Aldaris came out of it and invited him and ... Brahm ... to go with him to visit a cly-ant, another new word, whatever it was. But the words that caught Grakk's immediate attention were "... if knowledge or glory be what you seek ...", and they really sounded like what Grakk wanted! And he didn't even have to ask any questions. Somebody wanted to speak to him? He smiled hugely, showing a mouthful of large, crooked, yet clean teeth. Well, awright! He stood up when they did, waited for the dw- Brahm! to go before him, then followed all of them out the door.
