Subject: Huh? Wha__?

On entering the "palace", Pao was about to tell the rest of the group about what he had gleaned from his detection outside and the last moments of it as he came through the door. Upon noticing the stares directed at the group and the even larger number being directed at himself from the quite numerous undead populating the place, he held his tongue until they were settling in at a table.

Then he was taken quite by surprise when the small woman in orange approached the table, speaking to him and calling him by name. He didn't remember her as one of his tormentors, which is to say he didn't recognize her at all. Not in the least. And yet she knew Miran and Percifeer, also? But they were "only babes" when she was there. Even curiouser. The blank, confused, open-mouthed look of incredulity that someone here would know him lasted for a few minutes.

Then Pao shook his head, as if recovering from being stunned. "H-hello, Dai Lung." was all he could muster at the moment. And Ocyari, ever the effervescent one, had questiions for The woman, Dai. Pao, grateful for the distraction, tried to compose himself.

By the time Ocyari had questioned and been answered, the dire turn of their situation had lent purpose and direction to his thoughts. Turning to the others and lowering his voice slightly, he said, "People, our situation here has come to rest on the edge of a very sharp dagger. My estimate is that more than one third, possibly half, of the patrons here are undead. Some are quite poerful and some may even be living minions of those unholy vermin. We must take care that we don't start anything here that we cannot finish as living persons. And being a memeber of my particular faith puts me in serious danger, one might even say grave danger." He gives a wry simle at this last pun.

Turning back to the newcomer, he said, "Fovrgive me, Dai. I cannot honestly say I remember you, but you seem to know us, and have given pretty much our entire roster. And since I have only recently joined them, knowing me is proof that you have come to help and not to spy. I, for one, am glad of it."

He looks to the others to see and hear their reactions ...

And for whomever might be interested ...

I can scan the 3e Skills Listing, Feats Listing, and the Complete Spell Listing and then post, or send, or link it to/for anyone who might want them ...

[Edit]
And, oh, Tek? Can I suggest a name for this campaign? I won't presume to say that this is what it should be named. It came to me in a sort of epiphany:

Veythor -- After Starfall

I thought it sounded pretty good ...

I'll shut up now.

I just recently tried to order 3 CDs from Microsoft for Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3). On check out, I noticed that the postage/shipping for the 3 cdroms was $18.00. Plus $12.00 ($4 per disk) and $5.000 tax (?) brought the grand total to $37.00!

I thought, "WTF, over? 18 buck to sheip from Washington (state) to Arizona. Even for Air Mail (the default method for Microsoft), that's pretty bad. And it's supposed to take 3 weeks to get that far, even by Air Mail?"

So I back-tracked and ordered only 1 CD and went through the process again. Turns out that they are charging a $5.00 flat tax rate for each order and $6.00 PER DISK for shipping, even though all three CDs would be shipped in the same envelope. I know. I ordered two CDs with SP2 on them and they came in the same envelope. I got THOSE disks free and the postage was only $2.39 for standard rate shipping fot the both of them.

I didn't order the disks ...

Clint made a mental note to chastise Oso when they were underway. His little joke with Oko's steed was uncalled for. Oso would have sensed tht the animal didn't want him close, but didn't move. On purpose. He knew the bear had no concept of humor, but at the same time he also knew that, occasionally, any animal had had an instinctive desire for the immediate reward of whatever they considered to be "fun". And recognizing that Oko's mount was a well-trained warhorse meant that Osonaar's little stunt could have gotten the bear hurt, maybe even seriously hurt.

No, nagging him about it later would be useless. The bear had "got his jollies" from his litle trick, and would have no clue as to what Clint was referring to if he mentioned it hours later. It would have already been forgotten. No, let it go. But he'd keep something handy to lob in the direction of the bear if he tried that again -- IF it happened again.

Clint was just finishing "tacking up" his own mount when he heard the confrontation near where Dae's tent had been set up. A disagreement of some sort, obviously. Clint purposely stayed where he was, within ear-shot but out of "choosing" range. Since he had joined their company less than a day ago, he wouldn't take part in any decisions that didn't concern him directly. He had been under the impression that Moraglin had been with them for some time. An erroneous assumption, it seemed now. Clint would refuse to be involved in any decision as to whether or not she stayed with them. For now he remained silent.

When Zara asked if anyone else wanted more to eat, Clint quietly shook his head when she glanced his direction.

What Pao tried was contrary to his decision to follow quietly, but he could no longer, in good faith, hold back when he knew he had comething of value to contribute. And the mountainous behemoth in the doorway said only one person could answer. He didn't say only one person could make the determination.

Pao was surprised at what he was able to determine, for he had no high hopes of succeeding. Mentally, he chided himself and thought, "My Goddess of the Souls, I promise I will learn never to doubt your gifts to this faithful one!"

Slowly and quietly, he moved over to Percifeer and said over her shoulder,"The vampire is the Khordaldrum. This is not a guess."

He then moved away from her, just as quickly and quietly as he approached, to stand a short distance from the door. He would apprise them of the surrounding prevalence of undead in disturbing numbers in a few minutes, when the result of this "test" was determined. Right now their goal was to gain entrance past that snide glob of flesh at the door.

By the time Gorsh reached the top of the short climb, he was only slightly tired, but frustrated in the worst way. He knew better than to assume that cracks meant falling! Cracks were places to put fingers. They were handholds. A lack of cracks meant a lack of handholds, and that meant falling! And he had a few bruises to prove that bit of logic. It was only after falling twice that he finally realized the folly of the initial assessment of his climbing route. When he returned to the same point the others had ascended, he also was able to do so. Maybe not as fast, but he made it, frustrated more with himself than with the lack of rest, now.

His frustration lent him energy, which was a good thing, for even after the climb, the others were heading for the cave. Gorshak followed with a deep sigh and a shake of his head. But he wasn't so tired, at least not now.

I KNEW I shouldn'ta crossed me fingers!

And I also should have listened to my insticts and left the "least amount of sissures" thing out of the post. Cracks would have given Gorsh a better purchase, or handhold, or grip, or place to put his fingers, etc. ...

[Edit]
And then there's the fact that I wanted to do it the hard way (without taking 10's...)

... I can put forward something (OOC) that I have been dying to mention. Since the test is effectively over and is not likely to be the same for a second try:

I wonder if Pao's ability with undead and his silver holy symbol might have helped. He wouldn't have had to approach if they were just across the street ...

[Edit]
I just re-read the series and noticed that Miran did ask in a general fashion if Pao could identify undead by sight. I didnt notice that, but it's actually irrelevant. I would have had to answer "no". And Pao had already decided (as posted) that he would only do the test if asked or volunteered.

There is also the fact that the man-mountain said only one person could give the answer. He didn't say only one person had to solve the problem ...

Clint was a bit taken aback. He had heard the whistle, and was sure theothers had also, but they didn't seem to react at all. Then an unknown person rode into the camp during breakfast, Clint watched with caution, then amusement, as the man interacted with familiarity with Zara and asked where her sister was. Okay, a friend then. No wonder Osonaar didn't react.

The man then introduced himself to Clint as Alex and said that he had been told to give Clint a ring. "Well met, Alex!. I am most often known as Clint. Of the East Wood, originally. I'm sorry you weren't here at my own arriveal, but I was out and about, having left retirement, and looking for an unknown. When I encountered your companions, the unknown became a known and I have been invited to join them. I have accepted."

Clint takes the ring from Alex and looks at it closely. "I thank you Alex, for the gift. I will accept it, rather than offend by refusal. I am curious, did the person who told you do bring this to me also tell you it's function? If not, it is no pressing matter. I can find out in good time. And we will have time, I imagine."

As Alex moves to deliver his message to Dae, Clint goes to his own mount, Ponk, and uses a burlap bag to rub the horse down before checking his gear and tack. Then he saddles the animal to prepare for movement. Finally, a goal, a purpose. After so long, it was a good feeling ...

At least not as far as I'm concerned. I, unlike my younger and less experienced brother ( !! ), was able to figure out what you were doing to the AC numbers by looking at al the ACs for the characters. Different, but interesting. May try that method in my own game(s) as a experiment in the future ...

Okay. Finally. They got here. While Gorsh was used to lagging behind faster-moving, long-legged folk, he was tired after the pace the rest of the group set to get to this cave. And by the Forges! Now he has to climb? Climbing formations such as this was not unnatural to Gorsh, but by Moradin's Braided Beard! Did they have to be in such a hurry? When they arrived at the cave and he saw he'd have to climb, Gorsh sat down to catch his breath so as to be refreshed enough to make the climb easily. But the others seemed in a rush.

The two half-orcs made quick preparations and started their respective climbs quickly. Gorsh still smiled at the night-and-day difference between the two of them. Their sizes, demeanors, and attitudes not only differed, they often conflicted. Which was sometimes amusing to listen to, if one was smart enough to keep silent. The Drow woman , like Gorsh, seemed to be in no hurry. But even she was ready to make the climb quickly. No help there. The humans? Short-lived people always seemed to be in a hurry to get to wherever they were going. His companions seemed to be no different. And Gorsh still marveled at the cat-person, Drassar. A unique one, he. And the dwarf liked to learn about unique things and people. But the furred one was as withdrawn to speaking to the dwarf as was the Drow female.

Ah, well. Gorsh stood and checked his gear, to be sure that nothing would become separated from him if he slipped or -- Moradin forbid! -- fell. Once finished, he began his own climb after first checking the face to find the most solid area of the low cliff, with the least amount of fissures. This would most likely be the safest route, but not necessarily the easiest ...

Pao listened to the conversation at the doorway as he moved slowly and quietly to stand near Ocyari. He speaks softly to her, but without looking directly at her, so he can keep his eyes on the door.

"Li'l Lady, for what it's worth, I trust you as much as anyone here. And I instinctively trust all of you. But you and I must still prove to them that they can rely on us. So we're both on equal footing in that respect. Looks like we're both gonna have to show a little patience. I really don't like it any more than you do, but there it is ..."

To the others, he says, "For my part, I think Miran has a point. Hopefully, the contest would be non-lethal, and I would think he could handle it. If Miran wants to go for it, I say let him try."

I, too, used to envision a cloak as having sleeves. Then a friend of mine burst my bubble with the following:

Main Entry: cloak
Pronunciation: \klôk\
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English cloke, from Anglo-French cloque bell, cloak, from Medieval Latin clocca bell; from its shape
Date: 13th century
1: a loose outer garment, which differs from a robe in that it has no sleeves, but uses slots through which arms can protrude from inside the garment. The arm-slots also differentiate the cloak from a cape, along with the hood, which a cape does not possess.

I kept it to remind myself that I'm not as smart as I thunk I was ...

I'll shut up now ...
