Pao had been looking around him at the revelers as he made his way toward the door. As his eyes returned to the front, and the door, Miran was suddenly there. He indicated for Pao to stop, silently. Then Miran's voice was heard, "Please, Pao, we don't mean to chase you away ..."

But Miran's voice was behind him! Yet Miran was standing in front of him ...

Pao turned and saw Miran standing at the table, a look of concentration on his face, but still speaking. As the Miran-image moved out of Pao's way to clear the path to the door, Pao himself turned around and dropped his head, chin to chest, and shook it slowly. When he raised it again, he was smiling broadly, caught by his own words. He had been contacted before he had even left the establishment. He made his way back to the table slowly, smiling all the way, and seated himself again.

What humor he saw in the incident was unclear to most, but in his voice it was plainly evident, "You didn't chase me away, my friend. And I suppose I could have waited a little longer for a reply from any of the rest of you. I was hoping for a response from at least one of you, to verify whether or not Percifeer spoke for you all. I may not be as quick to act on my emotions as Percifeer, but I sometimes do let them get the best of me. I try not to let that happen, though."

"Your words indicate that you, at least, feel I should be here. Or that is how I understand them. Percifeer, who brutally twisted the meaning and intent of my earlier words to you all, doesn't seem to like me much. How much of that is her true feelings, and how much is grief, or frustration, or whatever, I know not. I imagine I'll find out."

[Whether or not Percifeer returns]

Still in his current, light-hearted tone, "As far as my opinion is concerned, I have already spoken of my preference and my reasons for it. I stand by it. But I am not fool enough to demand you all abide by it. I intend to comply with any majority decision regardless of my own feelings."

He looks about for a serving-wench to order a drink.

My last post was intended to indicate an opportunity for the others to intervene, as stated. NOT to be an absolute "I'm outta here!"

I also indicated an option to contact me if they do not stop me,

But I did lose sight of the fact that the few most recent postings were not made by the only players in the game.

Still, my post holds as an opportunity, not an absolute. I do not mean to usurp control. I will wait and see, rather than knee-jerk-post (again).

But the point missed is that Person B didn't even try to have tha last word to person A. He let her walk out, being silent.

BUT ... ... he attempted to make sure that the others knew more about him, and not to do the same thing to him that Person A did. (the chip thing ...)

Reralae, don't be afraid to bring up any points, at least to me. I don't take them personally.

Does it seem like Pao has a chip on his shoulder? It should.

Bickering? Pao? No. He's reacting, based on past experience. His history can be learned in play and will enlighten all, but for now, they only know what they see.

Not pretty, maybe, but put yourself in his position:
Return to help, sent to find others. A party ensues for some reason and THEN he's told why he's here. Minutes later he's the target of wild accusations about what he can and can't do, delaying progress, assuming too much, and generally being a butthead.

Yeah, he's angry. If y'all wanna learn about him, interact with him, don't just judge.

Pao glared at Ocyari. "Usually I find the wisdom that issues from the mouths and minds of children enlightnenig, for it is usually straight-forward and uncluttered by experience."

"Not this time, young one. You know no more about my motives than Percifeer does and have even less right to speak of them Particularly not in judgement. You have the same right to speak your thoughts as aonyone else, but you also have the same responsibility to be able to handle the consequences of those words."

He stands slowly. " I will go to find an inn to sleep and rest. I will leave word at the orphanage as to where I can be found, if you desire my help or company or counsel. Good night to you all."

He starts toward the door.

Clint chuckled at Dae's requested name for him. "Actually, that's the name I am most used to, although I have been called much, much worse buy some not-so-friendlies."

He glanced to where Dae was looking. "Oh. The darktent? An old friend of mine called it that. Darkness and silence for privacy. I guess she wants to be left alone. When she returnedn just before dawn, she was in a pretty foul mood. I was a good boy and left well enough alone. No teasing."

"Oso, leave her be. For heaven's sake, one would think you'd starve to death if we didn't feed you people-food! Give the cook room to work, please." Osonaar, only paused a second or two before moving over to stand next to Clint's Ponk, sniffing the horse's feet briefly.

Percifeer's outburst, brief as it was, caught Pao completely by surprise, and all he could do -- to his credit -- was keep silent and watch her rant, wide-eyed and blank-faced.

But the accusations she spewed so readily reminded him vividly of episodes at the orphanage, when the same kind of poison was thrown at him, often accompanied by physical punishment for his supposed transgreessions. All done behind closed doors, of course, or somewhere out of sight and hearing of Ormander or any staff on duty.

Once she was gone, he paused for a few seconds to let the others look after her, then said, quietly, "Here it is. Me to you. I am here to help, not to demand. You all have more knowledge Than I of what you have done and what you have yet to do. I do not yet have that knowledge. I will accept, and act on, suggestions, but I will not accept treatment like you have just witnessed -- from her or any of you. I don't deserve it any more than Pio does."

"Do I not see our brethren dying? No, I did not. And I hope not to, for I have skills to prevent or delay death, to an extent. I saw nothing and knew nothing of Ormander's plight or your efforts until I was told by the very group at this table."

"How dare I suggest a continued delay? I don't remember suggesting any such thing. I put forth -- as a question, not a demand -- a possible course of action. Nothing more. And my observations and associations are my own, and I will speak them. I force no one to agree with me."

"Yon Percifeer seems certain that Pio was the cause of some of her grief, delaying and 'thwarting her at every turn' I think she said. And she would not have me pick up where Pio left off and delay you further? Does she speak for the rest of you?

"And I am not supposed to make the mistake of assuming I alone can think? I learned long ago to assume nothing except that death is inevitable. I'll say no more on that one."

"I presume nothing except to ask the rest of you this: Am I needed here and now? Am I wanted -- here and now? If no to either one, I am the wrong person in the wrong place. I could be elsewhere, but I chose to come here. My reasons are my own, but the overlying reason is that I am here for the same benefit all the rest of you desire. If any of you doubt that, you doubt me. I do not suffer any doubts concrning the rest of you. If she is feeling grief for Pio. I can understand explosions like that. But if she claims grief while at the same time blaming him for her woes, she does him a disservice."

He took a deep breath, "Percifeer and I will have words again about this very thing, I will make certain of it. She needs to hear me, but I won't chase after her to tell her now. I will tell her when she calms, if she does. If does not ... we'll see ..."

He finally closes his mouth into a grim, thin line, and sits back scowling. When he crosses his arm to indicate a wait for response, the only evidence of his own subdued anger is his shaking hands.

As the mouse scampered away, Clint says quietly, but with amusement, "My apologies, Sir Mouse, for interrupting your nightly hunt."

As the sky began to lighten, Clint noticed the chill was becoming a bit more biting than expected, so he stopped by his gear on on of his walk-'rounds to grab his cloak to lessen the slight discomfort. In his younger days, he would have just grinned and bore the discomfort to "prove" himself, but now he felt no need to impress anyone.

As Zara goes about setting up breafast and waking the others, Clint watches with amusement, then goes to wake Osonaar by laying across the bear's back, growling at him, and pulling at his fur playfully for a few minutes. The bear, at first, ignored Clint. Then he grunt-snuffled and got to all fours with Clint still on his back. Clint "dismounted" and patted the bear affectionately before moving toward the food.

He noticed that Moraglin didn't seem inclined to join them immediately, but he figured the others knew her well enough to know what she was about. He would just follow their lead and wait patiently, for now. There was still information to be passed, here and en-route, by any and all of them, and he eagerly looked forward to the exchanges.

As he approaches the others at the table, he adopts his family's eastern accent easily, "Fair an' soft marnin' tae ye all, Zara, Dae, and Oko! 'Tis to gladden the heart o' this one tae see ye all in health and peace."

Osonaar makes straight for Zara to nuzzle her in the back, then sits and waits patiently, nose high, sniffing the air.

After Pao 'unburdened' himself, he sat back, thinking "Thweid! Like they need to know your innermost conflicts! What is wrong with you?"

But it was done. So he brightened and asked for more of the sea-cat, while still railing at himself for a few additional minutes. Young Ocyari asked Dorothy about her travels, and the older orphan 'sister' seemed happy to oblige her curiosity. Pao only half-listened until he heard the reference about a librarian being shot, as witnessed by Dorothy. Then he riveted his attention on the rest of her brief story, noting the loss of her horse just outside the city on her return. Then she met with her employer, whom she met three days ago. Two scroll cases. It said something of Dorothy's integrity that she remained unaware of the contents of the scrollcses. And it seemed odd to Pao that the information of death and attacks associated with the contents of the two tubes didn't seem to faze Dorothy's employer.

After Dorothy finished, he said to her, "Dorothy, it seems odd to me, you being attacked while returning to Drefast with the items you spoke of. And also that death and near-death associated with the information you carried seemed not to bother your employer. Elsbeth, was it?"

To the others, while glancing at each of them, he also spoke, "I may be taking too much for granted here, but to me this smacks of coincidence. Dorothy's recent experience and our own quest may not be related, but would it hurt to speak to this Elsbeth and find out whether or not they are related? It is a direction in which to move and we don't seem to have any other options at the moment."

Listening respectully to learn of Ormander's plight, Pao knew that the fate of the orphanage also hinged on fate of the man. He also wondered what had happened to his own bracelet. At the temple, early on, he was asked not to wear it for it would be a distraction to his concentration. It seemed to have disappeared after his first year of studies at the temple. It was simply missed and then dismissed. Odd that this situation had to do with a similar bracelet. Stolen? A fake? Hmmmmmm ...

Pao waited for a lull in the conversation, cleared his throat, and spoke, slowly and solemnly.

"I am here, with you all, and will remain with you all to see this out as best I can. I, too, do not wish to see Ormander imprisoned for a falsehood, for it would have repercussions reaching far beyond just him."

"That being said, there is something you must know about me.

Pao stands and places bis hands on the table and leans on them, turning his head from side to side as he speaks to look at each of the others, look at each of them again and again.

"I don't hate Ormander, I really don't, but because of my own unique experiences and life in the orphanage, I cannot think of him or see him as a father-figure. Nor do I need to. He allowed me a better life than I would have had on my own, assuming I would have survived. While my life at the orphanage was far from pleasant, it was better than many alternatives. I will give the headmaster that much "

"To be honest, who I am is who I made myself. What I am is what the Headmaster Ormander gave me the opportunity to be. It is not the life I would have chosen for myself if left to my own devices, but I am inordinately pleased with it. I am comfortable with who I am and what I am. The former is my own doing, and the latter is due to the headmaster. For that alone I could thank him, and that is the only debt I feel I owe him."

So you will notice, at times, that I am less than affectionate with any of you. When I speak of Ormander, I will do so with respect, but it may not seem to hold the love or affection some of you seem to hold for him. This may seem stand-offish to some or all of you, but there is a reason."
He sits and raises cleched fists to his shoulders and then places the fists on the table with exaggerated slowness. His voice becomes only slightly louder.

"But all of you need to understand that my perceived ambivalence does not lessen my commitment to see him, and the orphanage, cleared of this sword at their necks. I am as certain of Ormander's innocence s the rest of you and will give the same ambition and commitment to see this righted that any of you would give, possibly more, certainly no less."

He sits back in his chair, closes his eyes breifly, and sighs deeply. "Sorry, but when it comes to Ormander, despite my attitude toward him or about him, he is one of the few things in my past I am grateful for. Those few things I will defend with every fiber of my being."

He pauses for a few seconds more, then suddenly smiles and asks, "Now where's some more of that cat-fish-stuff? I wanna stuff my face a little bit more before I ask some questions."

Percifeer's reaction to Pao's statement about Ocyari's accompanying him, and her ensuing knee-weakening laughter, made Pao take pause and think. He had not actually heard anything to the effect that Ocyari would be going with him. She had simply appeared, suddenly and confidently, beside him as he left the orphanage, and her apparance and confidence was the reason Pao was so certain that she had been sent. He was certain no more, but saw no reason -- yet -- to change his spoken assessment.

And Percifeer was correct on one matter: if any harm came to Ocyari at this stage in her life, Ormander would hold them all responsible. Pao certainly did not want that worry hanging over his head, not now. But Ocyari seemed ever the resourceful one. She would learn what trust was worth soon enough, especially if caught in battle with the group and her life depended on one, some, or all of the others.

When Percifeer hugged him, Pao's stolid expression did not change, and his returned embrace was more token, cursory, or courteous than affectionate. He did allow himself a small smile when he heard that someone actually missed him, although he couldn't imagine why.

Although he didn't say anything, Pao shrugged off his backpack and looped his mount's reins through the straps in preparation to aid the others to move or remove the carcass of the cat.

She raises a good point. I may have goofed again.

In my PM, it stated that we left the orphanage together, but it didn't specifically say as companions. However,

In the DM's post it stated that Ocyari was "with Pao", and I read that to mean she was alongside me. Then Ocyari introduced me, which kinda reinforced that impression.

If we did not arrive together, then I can also alter that reference, if neccessary.
