Subject: In the cart

Tock hadn't let her down. He kept up with the group. But it wasn't the easy, lazy pace she had set for her own travels, and she could now imagine how rough the ride would be if she was being chased on this road. It wouldn't be fun. It aggravated Linnix even more that she may have to forgo the cart, abandon it, and load all her gear on tock. It was already bundled for just that circumstance, but that would mean that Loriel had been right, albeit not for the correct reason. The music Elesia played on her pipes reminded Linnix of her father's flute he played in the evenings when she was much younger. The memory brought a smile to her lips and lightened her mood a little. When Daisy took Aelistae for a cantering jaunt around the party, Linnix had to laugh. Aelistae was enjoying the moment, and seemed to be enjoying Daisy immensely. She hoped that whatever happened would not dampen that joyous spirit ..

And the bridge they approached, would the cart -- the bridge!!!

Seeing the altercation unfold on the bridge, and Bart speaking to Loriel, and Aelistae riding forward, Linnix paused only briefly before looking back in Barrb's direction.. Barrb herself was already turned around and looking back behind the party. But only briefly. When she turned around again, Linnix looked directly into her face, and as Barrb rode by the cart and indicated for Linnix to watch behind her, Linnix simply nodded. She moved the cart far enough to be able to run to the others if needed, then set the brake and jumped into the back of the cart for what coverage she could get, if needed. She made sure her daggers were easily accessible, and unhooked her hand crossbow and set a bolt. She had complete confidence in the abilities of the others to handle what was up front, and knew they would call her if she was needed. Regardless, if after a few minutes, there was no one forthcoming from behind them, she would move forward on foot to help. Whether or not she stayed would be determined by the number (if any) approaching from behind ...

Subject: A loss of gaety ...

Gone was all trace ot the lightness Linnix had shown in the courtyard and at the gate. Her enthusiastic demeanor simply died after she spoke to Loriel, and became even darker at Loriel's answer. It had not diminished even a little since they began their trek. Linnix smiled at Aelistae, but the smile held no humor. "I do apologize, Aelistae. I mean no disrespect, but I don't feel much like conversation at this point. Right now it is enough for me that you have shown me and all in this company courtesy and respect from the start. More than I can say for at least one other ... " She cast a meaningful glance in Loriel's direction, nodding once as she did.

"That one, I feel, seemingly doesn't know what she has done before we even started. If she does know and doesn't care, so much the worse. It was obvious she angered me, but the reason may not be so obvious. I don't like being told, essentially, that I know nothing, and that I had better listen to the voice of someone else's reason without question. I have fought, and do fight, well alongside those I trust and respect. She has given me no reason to extend either in her direction. To be honest, at this point, I would just as soon shoot her as the enemy, whoever they may be. Not a good way to start a relationship of any kind, much less one that her life may well depend upon. I shouldn't even be telling you this, because you were not involved in our exchange, but if I don't say something before nightfall, to someone, I'm gonna explode."

Linnix heaved a great sigh"And she seems to have affected Barrbarra in the same manner as she has affected me, and apparently for the same reason. But that is Barrb's concern. At first camp, or first opportunity, I would have words with Her Ladyship Loriel. The outcome of that will determine whether or not we continue to learn from and about each other, which I look forward to. "

She smiled again, but with somewhat of her original mirth showing through, "And I was saying I wasn't in a talking mood? Let this be a lesson about me. If I can say this much and not want to talk, imagine what I would be like if I really wanted to converse!" She shakes her head and laughs quietly, then turns her gaze forward and clucks for Tock to pick up the pace a bit ...

Subject: Linnix

Linnix listened to Bart and snorted her opinion of his "capitulation", as she saw it. But it was his decision and didn't alter her own.
The she simply stared in quiet, unabashed amazement at the priestess' actions when Bart requested a blessing. She had heard of things such as the "black-hole-pocket" thing the priestess used, but had never seen one, much less seen how it could be used. Oh, how she could use something like that! Hard on the heels of that wonder was the appearance of two white stallions who came at the call of the priestess. At least it seemed that way to Linnix. Okay, that changed a few things, but ... but then even Barrb's resolve seemed to take a new direction. Thank goodness she still intended to follow the roads as suggested by Bart.
"Bart, I still have some room left in my poor, delapidated little two-wheeled cart here. More than enough for the last barrel. This cart has been everywhere that Tock has been. I do not wish to leave it here, but will do so if, as Barrb suggests, the majority decides to ride hard cross-country. On the road, this cart can easily keep up with the rest of you, even at speed. But if we have to run full-tilt to escape something larger that we can handle -- in that case, I would only be a liability and should, in fact, be left behind. Regardless, my preference is to use the road. This is the safest ... "
The banging, clanging, shouting, and horse-snorting of Zacharius' following hammered her words into surprised silence. Without waiting for Aelistae to make a decision whether or not to ride one of the stallions, she goaded Tock into motion, clearing the way for the group and their bullish and belligerent leader. She had only just cleared the gateway when the first of them rode hard by. At Barrb's assessment of the collection of armored riders, Linnix mused a bit and nodded in silence.

Linnix also notes that Xaris doesn't seem to have a mount. "Xaris, if you wish, you may ride with Aelistae and me, or I am sure that Bart and Elesia would not mind you on their wagon, either. if you prefer to ride, I can let you sit Tock's back, in front of the cart. I'm pretty sure he won't mind."

Subject: Welcomes Aelistae

Linnix smiled as Aelistae joined her in the cart, then motioned for the dark elven woman to place her gear in the back. She was about to answer Aelistae's question about preferences when Loriel rode up next to the cart.
"Can you not ride that animal? ..."
Linnix turned to stare, drop jawed, at Loriel. "Nope. Tock has been reliable and faithful so far and I trust him. And I trust this cart. And if I have to abandon the cart, I have a saddle in the back to use, thank you." She then turns away to ignore Loriel, a slightly bemused look on her face as she shakes her head..
However, upon hearing her tirade to Bart, she hops off her cart and approaches Loriel, shouting, "HEY, MISSY!"
She approaches Loriel only as close as the wolf-dog will let her and states, "The man is our sponsor, and I think he knows the best route to the place we seek. I don't know if you know how to get there, but I don't! And if he says we may be able to get there quicker by road, and with less hassles, I will go with him because of that knowledge. Are you in such a hurry to get there that you would ride full-tilt across unknown country? You may be one to listen to in battle, but demands such as you have placed here at this time are out of place with people you have just met and have no real knowledge of."
Turning to Bart, she says, "Good sponsors, I will follow your judgement until I find no reason to. You have made no demands, only suggestions. If you do not mind, I will continue to bring my cart and ride behind you in case of any breakage to either of our vehicles. You have shown more wisdom here than even I myself, and you have given freely and willingly. I apologize, sincerely, for all of us."
That said, she turns and stalks back to her cart and remounts, anger visible in every step. She looks at Aelistae, her face flushed in anger, then quickly calmed herself and tried to smile. "Well, I think you know my answer now." She chuckles lightly.

Subject: NOW she's ready ...

The selection of wines took more time than Linnix had figured it would, but then she hadn't figured on the number of choices she would have to choose from in this city. And she was not behind schedule -- yet. She made her way from the bodega toward the stables, watching where she was going, but also what was going on around her. Upon returning to the stable, she collected her horse, cart, and gear. Hitching Tock up to the cart outside the stable, she enjoyed the morning freshness. Later in in the day, when chamberpots have been emptied and more animals hae passed through the streets, it might not smell so pleasant. Climing into the cart she clucked at Tock and mouthed a command she hadn't heard since she left her father's small farm. "Ho! Gi'up, Tock!"

Linnix was in a hurry, but then again, she wasn't. She knew she had plenty of time to do what she needed to do, because she didn't need to do much to be ready. Back at her inn room, she changed into her "sturdy gear": heavy trousers bloused shirt, sturdy boots, and wide belt. She picked up her skirt and blouse and rolled them up in a tight bundle, then stuffed the bundle into her backpack and grabbed it, the belt pouch, and her weapons to carry to the stable to get Tock and her cart.

[any items missing will be covered in PM ]

Before she picked up Tock, though, she had to find a few things. A kit and some wine. Should be simple enough to find. Once that's done, she'd go pick up the animal and cart and head for the gate to meet Bart and her companions.

Having her own words thurst back at her, with obvious amusement, from Aelistae caused Linnix to smile and laugh out loud. "Ha! haa-ha-haa!", she blurted, then composed herself quickly. "I am, at that, but the wealth I seek is not always in gold or tangible valuables. The local information I can glean from Bart is of no small value to me, and maybe I can get even more useful information from some of his friends while being associated with him. And you can also provide information for me as well, but I will not be so bold as to start thursting a tirade of questions at you before we have broken bread together." She smiled genuinely. " .... not yet. Oh, but I will. I am an ever-curious sort, I am."

At Aelistae's next question, she quickly volunteered, "My name is Linnix. Linnix Wolfette ap Bye. " She then turned to pay attention to those Aelistae spoke to next, to gather names from those willing to give them.

Subject: One more for the road ...

After her brief conversation with Aelistae, the two lapsed into a surprisingly comfortable silence waiting for, and then listening to, the announcement of the queen. At it's conclusionm, Aelistae was quick to rise and make known that she had made he decision already. She moved forward purposefully to the farmer, Bart, to sign his sheet. Linnix, who had made a habit of thinking about possible consequences of hasty actions, watched drop-jawed as the dark female did so. And she was not surprised that, when Aelistae threw back her hood before signing, her assessment was almost correct. She had assumed a mixed-blood drow, not one of full-blood. She shook her head and stood, then began to untie and remove the apron and roll it up as she tried to decide which line to file into. And most were already lengthy, she had waited so long already.

She didn't need armor. Not in her profession.

Gems or jewelry? She would have to convert them to local tender, and lose something in the exchange, as was typical.

Magic? Okay, now that sounded alright. She could use it or sell for a tidy profit. A win-win situation, no?
Nothing up front? From the farmer, who offered nothing of real value as a sponsor, she could get something as valuable as gold, gems, or magic. She could get local information. This, she knows, is always valuable for one in her line of work. Whether immediately or in the future. Knowledge thus gained has kept her out of the courtrooms and out of gaols, certainly. She hesitated only few moments to tuck the apron into the waistband of her skirt as she approached Bart's sheet to sign, falling in behind a smallish warrior-type, and a cloaked figure with a wolf-dog. The little warrior seemed a little gruff, but courteous to Bart. And he seemed to be the only male to sign the farmer's sheet -- so far. The next one, the cloaked figure, spoke in a voice that had a slight accent and a female lilt to it.

As she herself signed the sheet, she quietly nodded and smiled at Mister Bart James. She began to feel the rush of uncertainty that had made her adventuring days a bright spot in her memories. She began almost at once to envision possible outcomes, what she would do it this or that came to be. She shook her head again, and stood up to move away and wait with the others nearby ...

Linnix watches as the figure approached and deduced early that no man could walk with that kind of grace or smoothness. When the woman came closer, she squinted slightly to peer into the darkness under the hood of the cloak. She was surprised at the accent carrying the words directed at her, asking permission to join her in this semi-out-of-the-way place she had chosen to sit. She had only heard a similar accent twice before, and both times had been on the run from the speaker after a brief and violent encounter. But she thought that those types only came out, or were only comfortable in the darkness of night or, in extreme circumstances, in an eclipse.

As she nodded assent and smiled, she spoke quietly, "By all means. You have as much right to sit anywhere you wish as I do. My name is Linnix Wolfette, and I would be happy if you would join me here."

As the woman seated herself, Linnix saw the flash of darkness under the skirt as it parted briefly, and thought for a moment that she had seen fine armor, but then corrected herself. No metallic sheen on that surface, nor did it have the shine of enamel. Skin? Maybe. But if so ... a dark elf? In daylight? Odd enough, that, but moreso since she asked for permission to sit here, seemingly as a courtesy. What she knew of the dark folk -- and that wasn't much, by a long shot -- would dictate belligerence and forcefulness from her, not courtesy. That courtesy deserved courtesy in return, and she was sure that if the dark woman was what Linnix thought she was, she would not jeopardize herself to "thump", or expose, another. So she answered truthfully to the next question, asking her purpose here.

"Actually, yes. I am here for the ... gathering ... as you put it. Nice choice of words. I am just waiting to find out if I have a chance at gaining some wealth and, maybe, a little notoriety as one of an elite group chosen. If there is about to be an army descend on this place, I'll be wanting to stay away from it. So I wait and learn." Her own curiosity about the other female would be submerged in silence. She was not asked for her history, and so she would again show the same courtesy and keep questions to herself. But she did hope for an opportunity to learn something about this one, this soft-spoken enigma. So tgether they waited ...

Subject: Sitting on a park bench ...

The flyer was found on the table she sat down at in a local tavern. She was about to use it to wipe the remnants of someone's meal off the table when she noticed the words "gratitude of the kingdom" and sat down to read it further. She snorted and smiled. At least this was not a land-rush to settle a newly-acquired tract of land, such as one in which her parents had participated. But the effect would be the same, she wagered. Something like this would get every thief, vagabond, robber, -- and maybe, just maybe, a few good, honest folk -- involved in a rush to become a land-owning noble.

Linnix was glad that she had no such aspirations. But it twanged a chord in her that she thought she had silenced. It had been years since she had been delving. She had given the adventuring life up willingly, preferring to do the research necessary to lessen the chance of failure on her ventures. She liked the ability to choose her own agenda, the freedom to be or do what she wished.

As she sipped her ordered drink, she read the flyer again. The offer was a reminder of days that made her feel alive, challenging the unknown and having to adapt spontaneously to circumstances in her own unique way. She had the experience to do this ... and she could return to her current method of "work" and almost any time. It just might be an interesting venture, at that. But only if she wasn't going to be competing against a hundred more who would just as soon get her out of the way as look at her. No, if that was the case, she would stay where she was, doing what she was doing. But she woldn't know unless she checked it out ...

And so, today on the ninth of Ches, she donned a skirt, blouse, and light shoes and headed for the square. On the way she purchased a pocketed white apron and donned it, stuffing some of the pockets with various items. Thinking that she had sufficiently disguised herself as a midwife, and seating herself in the square as if taking a break, she awaited the annouincement she had come to witness, noting various others -- numerous others -- arrive as she waited.

Subject: Intro to Linnix

Linnix was happy. For now, anyway. Ever since she left Daar el Azim in Calimshan, she has been traveling hard and fast. She took only the time necessary to nap fitfully and quickly, then began moving again as soon as possible. Now that she's in Darromar, she would try to relax a bit and keep a low profile. She had enough stashed in her cart to keep her going for a little while. Meanwhile, she would "disappear into the local woodwork", visiting the local taverns to learn what she could of the efficiency of the local constabulary amd customs. No more would she hurry the gathering of information. Her security and well-being was determined by the accuracy of her assessments of potential targets, whether a business or an idividual.

She chided herself for the thousandth time for not checking the local laws in the last Calimshan city she was in. She knew how to identify and avoid targets under the protection of a guild of "shadow operators", which she had never felt a need to join. But she had not counted on the "welcome" she had encountered while attempting to relieve a shop in Daar el Azim of it's cashbox. She had failed to see a mark of protection on the storefront, so she figured it was safe to enter it (after hours, of course) to obtain some ' working capital ' before she moved on. Not only was the shop protected, but the local representatives of the thieve's guild providing the protection happened to be nearby and were adamantly vociferous and violent in their execution of their protective "duty".

She snorted in disgust at her choice of description. Had she not escaped them, she would probably have been executed on the spot. That's the impression she got as she was being chased on the road out of Daar el Azim, angry and empty-handed, flaying herself mentally as much as she was goading her mount for more speed. Fortunate for her that Daar el Azim was north of Myratma. On her southern journey along the Coast Road to Calimshan she had seen no garrison north of the city to pin her between its forces and forces from the south before she could get to Tethyr.

Her pursuers were often so close she could hear them shouting back and forth what they would do to her if they could just lay their hands on her. It was only the last-ditch effort of suddenly riding off the road at a sharp angle when she rounded a bend, riding into a stand of tall vegetation to stop and stay silent as long as she could until her would-be captors ran by her at full-tilt. She then back-tracked a few miles and rode off the road again and cold-camp at a spot out of sight of the well-traveled road. After a full day of not seeing the chasing riders again, she regained the main road to strike east to go as far away from Myratma's reach and retribution as possible.

She had stopped once to sell her mount (and friend and companion) Shaddoe, reluctantly but knowing she would endanger the life of her mount and herself since she was last seen riding the big black mare after a failed robbery. She purchased a small, two-wheeled cart and a large bay gelding to pull it, and loaded her gear into it. The big gelding, which she has named Tock, has proven to be even-tempered, strong, and reliable. Not long after buying the cart, she made a stop, camped, and during the evening hastily cut her long, dishwater-blonde tresses unevenly and at shoulder length so that she could stuff the hair up under a hat quickly if necessary. She has also resorted to using her disguise kit more often to change her appearance and "muddle" her trail ...

I apologize to all in this thread and especially those involved in the game. My resignation post was not written to influence the decision of either the players or the DM, but to state my preference, and the reason for it. I waited to determine the DMs ruling before posting, and then only at the request posted to speak/post freely.

If the DM (and/or the players) will still allow me into the game, I look forward to it, and my intro post follows. If popular consensus is not to allow the "boat-rocker", I wish you all well.

Subject: 4th ed? For me, not likely ...

I think I'll pass. I have been buying less and less of the supplements with each edition because the writers seem to be moving away from the "old guard" that helped to make it what it is now. Such is the way of many things -- progress, dontcha know? While some of the changes made seem to be pretty cool, the majority of them are specifically geared for the younger crowd, and are not my cuppa tea (as I sit in my rocker, sipping, cane on one side and oxygen on the other, cat curled up on my feet, etc ...).

(1st edtion) AD&D, while touting itself for "ages 10 and up" was actually written for the college crowd, by a then-in-college crew. They knew what gamers wanted and allowed them to add it to see if it worked. If it did, fine. If it didn't, it was gone and the game moved on. That simple. And now the game is dictating how the game will evolve? If you thingk that is not true, you haven't played the boxed set or first edition AD&D, played them as they were meant to be played -- with liberty and enjoyment for all.

Not that I don't want to see the game progress, but it has already lost much of what it was famous for among the gaming community. I still run table-top games in 1st ed. and/or 2nd ed. (which I have all the supplements for), 3rd ed. (for which I have some supplements), but not 3.5e (there, I only have the core books). The "older" editions still interest me and my players, so I'll stay with them and stop spending money on books for a game that has "evolved" out of its own shell, as it were. The experts say that it's walking on it's own two feet, but what is it that's walking? It is so unlike the original creation of "mad doctors" (who, by the way, left the lab and sold it) that it just shouldn't be called by the original name. The new "creatng company of geniuses" is just rolling around in the laurels of the original makers ...

Subject: My thoughts

I have been watching and waiting for this to be resolved, without adding my own reasonings, and whether or not the resolution is to my own satisfaction.

I will be the one to back out, with apologies to all, including and especially the DM. I hope this will not put me in a bad light with others on this site. Whether or not it is understood, here are my reasons why:

I agree that D&D is pretty much wide open, but the laws, places, races, creatures, an monsters were created in such a way as to give a background and reason for the societal norms described.

I will focus on the bugbear to make my point, but my reasoning applies to many other species as originally created: The description of the bugbear in the MM describes the alignment as "usually" chaotic evil. This is a "racial preference", something he would have been raised with unless raised outside his (or her) society. It is also why bugbears, or goblinoids in general have not been used before except as opponents to player characters. It is what they were created for, meant to do. Playing one in an evil campaign works because it fits within their parameters and can be justified. Playing one outside of an evil campaign "just because I've never done it before" explains the player's reason, but not the change in morals and ethics of the goblinoid. While it is not a far step (and legal by game terms) to go from CE alignment to CN, I can see no justification for a bugbear to want to willingly associate with a group not formed by his own hand, a group he cannot bully or dictate to. Or for him to change alignment at all, indicating a change in basic beliefs. This may not even be known to the player -- yet -- and may be developed through the game.

In a nutshell, I can save the game some frustration and myself some time by withdrawing now. If and when my character would have met with the (or any) goblinoid, she would have broken off any negotiations and ran the other way anyway.

To be honest, I forsee the game stalling, or even stopping, as a result of this. I will follow the game with interest, to see if (and how) it can be completed to the satisfaction of all (and maybe learn something in the process). If I am proven wrong, I will prostrate myself before all of you again as an unworthy nay-sayer. Good luck to you all and, again, I apologize.

Subject: My thinkin'

Ok ... with a:

Drow Cleric - spellcaster/fighter
Human Rogue - prefers ranged weapons
Elven Archer - ranged weapon(s)

I would think that another spellcaster would make it a "theme" party of combatants from a distance, and a fighter would make it a more rounded party, capable of melee and ranged combat. I know, no help there.

My vote would be to make it a "theme" party just for giggles.

Subject: Oldies are often goodies ...

The Reverse Dungeon would be a type of scenario I could realy get interested in. Being a 2e module, it would take a little "translation", but would work well. The mention of it kinda reminded me of a game I ran that was in one of the old RPGA Fanzines. It was a "satire" scenario, with a rare Snack Dragon, Kobold Ginsu Warriors, etc. Obviously low levels, but short and quick -- and fun, oh, loads of fun!

It is also something I could dig up, scan, and send for ideas, if you're interested ...

Here's yer first vict -- er, player. Not new to RP (TT, MMORP, text-based), but new to this forum.

I like your idea about an all-humanoid party. Reserve a spot for me please, 'cause I'm interested.

I do have one idea: how about "hapless" or "unlikely" characters? A challenge for the player to describe and/or play:

A half-orc bard? (I have one I have played for years -- Link --)

A character normal in every respect except for his/her chameleon-like tongue and an appetite for large insects?

A character that seems to attract magical effects to happen in his/her vicinity, unbidden and random ...?

etc ...

Subject: I think you have my virgin post

I am an old (in age and experience) table-top gamer with some experience in text-based RP and MMORP, but I have never tried something like this. Sounds interesting, almost like the old play-by-mail games, but quite a bit faster.

I sent some info via PM about a character already created, and a sample post was included. I am interested in joining your game, so here is the sample post again:

Linnix moved to squat on the downwind-side of the fire, putting up with the eye-stinging smoke to get what heat she could. She could tell by looking, and by the sudden drop in temperature, that dawn was not far off. Not soon enough, as far as she was concerned. All night she had not been able to shake the feeling of being under constant scrutiny by eyes other than her own. Bandits? Animals? Who knows. While her vision is better than most, dark is dark, and sometimes dark is just too dark to see in. Thank goodness she was only day or two from the nearest town. She didn’t mind traveling alone, but knew the old “safety in numbers” adage was all too true.

A sudden movement caught her attention and she snapped her head to catch what she could. But the movement of the wind-blown branches and shrubs would make it difficult, at best, to distinguish a threat from the slow, waving dance of the trees. But she would watch, unmoving, until she was as sure as she could be that she was in no danger.
