A single brow arched, delicate and with some slight amusement. Dress code violation? She watched him for signs that he might be kidding, or even somehow trying to be amusing, but finding no hint of such intention, she sipped at her drink and watched him over the rim of the mug.

When he appeared to take a breath, she smiled and cocked her head slightly. Wayward strands of dark silken hair fell in front of her eyes again.

"La Rue. Yes, I believe I am familiar with her file. She's fairly young, isn't she? Poor thing, you know, before going to that extreme, why not give her a few days to become acclimated to the ship? You might find that her use of the device is in no way related to her occupation, but more to being on such a big ship, far from home, at a young age. But, if it will put you more at ease, I can call her in and have a chat with her to see what is going on. Would that be okay?"

"Is there something wrong, Counsellor D... Constantine? Your body appears to be in some distress."

Venn smiled and ordered up his water, bringing their drinks to the poofy sofas. Setting them down she reached back and worked her fingers at the thick hard knots along her neck.

"It's nothing, I think I slept badly, and sitting so long in one spot tends to... anyhow. About this project."

"Anyway, the drill. It's pretty simple in theory - one of the non-security officers is appointed to lead a 'raiding party' of off-duty officers and crewmen in an attempt to take control of or destroy the ship. That officer gets to pick who they use, how many, when they 'attack', and it's up to myself and the security staff to try and stop them without warning or foreknowledge of their plans. I think it is best if I give leadership of the opposition to whichever of the other senior staff is most in need of... well, some stress relief. Running up and down corridors with a phaser rifle set on stun is *fun*, and it's certainly a break from their regular duties. Anyway, all the details are on this PADD. I'll leave it with you, and you can give it to one of the other senior officers - I think you'd know who needs this better than I would, yes?"

As he described the challenge, her eyes brightened, the soft emerald sparkling as the gears within her head turned, grinding out ideas faster than she could catalog them.

"It sounds quite intruiging. You know, I would be greatly interested in the results. Perhaps you might consider sending me a copy of the reports, as well?"

"Oh, and one other thing: If it's not too much of a problem, I'd like someone to head down to the brig, have a chat with Lieutenant Valkriss. She's only got a few days left on her sentence, and if she's calm enough, I'll ask the Captain to suspend those last days so she can be on duty when we launch. It's always a shame to miss the start of a mission, I find."

"Actually, I had planned on a visit myself today. Now, hadn't you asked me about some stress relif techniques because of a co-worker? Do you have time to talk about those concerns now?"

Venn sipped at her drink, savoring the taste as it played over her tongue. The titan's grip on her muscles began to release a little and the smile on her lips belied the observations she was making, making down and mentally cataloging his actions and words for later analysis.

Granted! You now own one genuine genie like in the show. Unfortunately, she comes with her own badly timed laugh track, and has no interest in serving you. However, she really likes your TV and soon orders so much pay per view that you lose your TV, then home, then job, and ina fit of anger one day you just snap and brutally murder your genie in a violent, blood soaked rampage that ends in a shootout with you and the entire nations armed forces.

I wish i could post to this site from my cell phone.

As it had been already a long day, and the tight knot at thee back of her head kept moving to the front, Venn was only mildly embarrased that she could not completely recall the man's name as Nick entered the office.

After a few moments, it came to her, sudden and sharp, and she winced with theeffort, before greeting him warmly.

"Ah, yes. How are you, Nick? What can I do for you this afternoon?"

((OOC: Waiting for responses))

"I see. Well, why don't we have a seat if you have some time and we can talk it over a bit first. Would you like something to drink?"

Venn stood, willing her body into steadiness, and moved across the room with tight control, feeling her muscles coiled and aching as the tension in her head spread along her lean frame. Stopping before the replicator, she requested a warm cocoa with whipped cream and sighed softly, pushing aside a memory of Max Romanov's cocoa as a child.

"So, you were saying...?"

"You are never a disruption. I'm here to help you, day or night."

to be honest, she had nothing planned and usually never did. She thought of pringing up her fathers last recrded class, but she sisn't think even the Great Max Romanov's voice would drive away the restlessness. And while she remained professionally warm and inviting, Venn had never gone out of her way to form the kind of friendships that would stand a quick commcall and an invite to Ten Forward.

Besides, she still had some correspondence she should take care of, and maybe swim a lap or two, but nothing sounded good. Her stomach growled and, ignoring it, she eached up to pull the band from her hair.

Raven waves fell in a shining sheet that she brushed through with her fingers, sighing as she checked her PADD for messages and issues.

Might as well be social, she thought. Ten Forward, here i come...

“This has nothing to do with the fact that I lost the Gallant..."

This did not go unnoticed. Venn pulled back from the subject and picked up a different thread. "It souds like this is the first time ou have cme to admit that, out loud. And I commend you for finding it in yourself to verbalize that need. I have something I would like you to try. It's my own personal program, and it takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour from start to finish. I'd like you to run Program Costatine XA-Beta."

Venn smiled. "You take care of this ship. You feel connected to it, you empathize with it, and you humanize it. And that's fine, there is nothing wrong with that at all. But It's time to take a step back now, and realize that you are going to do no good for her if you can not do goo for yourself. The program is designed to allow you to be taken care of, to be pampered. It stimlates and refreshes your mind as wel as your body, while relieving you of the responsibilites you are consumed with. Now you may find it frivolous, and you may think it's not something you have time for. But i would, in the net 24 hours, like you to run it at least once, and come see me after."

Venn shifted in her seat, repositioning, to uncramp her legs.

"Are you willing to step outside yourself for an hour?"

"I'm not here to judge," venn added softly. "I'm just here to help you find a way through it."

“I don’t want to –get through it- though. I just want to be able to stay focused. I hate being docked. This ship…” and she runs her hand down the couch as if for emphasis, “is nearly everything I have left. When she’s docked it’s like… it’s like… I… Garrish is so lucky!” She spits this last bit out, seemingly at random, but with great emotion. Cheeks flushed now, her eyes glistening with threatened tears.

“God… It’s ridiculous! Truly it is. I’ve accomplished so much with my life thus far, and there is no reason to believe I’ve plateaued. And I don’t wish to…”

With a sigh she turned her head back toward the window, a tear falling coolly down her cheek. “I just want to get on with the launch.” She finished quietly.

Venn eased back into the sofa and cocked her head as she brushed aside the warwrd bangs, making mental note o visit the salon soon. Ignoring the comment about not feeling the same about docked versus in motion, she sank her teth into another issue entirel.

"Do you feel he's lucky because he does not share the same emotional connection to the ship that you do?"

Nodding encouragingly, she entered observation mode again, eyes trained to register the slightest change in body language, listening for strain and inflection.

"And do you think," she asked, following the thread she'd intended, "that you resonate so closely with this ship because it is, like you, a vesel of life, capable of creation and more directly, of change?"

Reaching under her seat as she gave Kennedy time to absorb her meaning, she removed a small flat box ad set it between them. when she opened the package, her heart hitched again at the monogramed MR o the white linen handkerchiefs. They'd been intended for her father years ago, but never made it.

Forcing asoft, reassuring smile to her lips, Venn leaned back angain, resting herhands on her thighs.

"When one suffers a tragedy," the counsellor began, "it is completely natural to form an attatchment to someone or even something that makes us feel safe, be it frm fromther physical or emotional harm. But it's etirely possible to let go of the pain without letting go of ones self, and how that pain has shaped you."

=/\\=Briggs to Counsellor Constantine. Lieutenant Diagram? A quick question, if I may. Coping mechanisms. I think I remember one of my previous counsellors talking about some kind of balls that could be used to reduce stress, or something... Do you know what I'm talking about, or has my memory tricked me again?=/\\=

Venn slid soft hands along her neck, working her fingers into knotted flesh. "It's Constantine," she reminded, making an effort to remove the edge from her tone. "I belive you refer to Tai Chi Balls, drivating from Earth's Ancient Chinese Healing practices. Similiar devices are used as focusing tools."

=/\\= I see. Only my new ensign was using something along those lines, and I was wondering what it was for. Thank you for your assistance. =/\\=

"We can discuss it more at your next session, if you like."

Musing that this was going to be a very long day, indeed, she tapped out a reminder to thhe Captain that he, too, was due on her couch, though she often allowed him the freedom of choosing where they met. Thoughts wandered to the end f the day, wondering what she would do with herself, wondering what Maressa would say, and sighed. It didn't matter, her mother had no voice here, and even if she ad, Venn knew the conversations would have ended up badly, defending herself and her solitary, stationary life aboard a ship like this.

Venn Constantine rubbed her eyes and pushed aside al thoughts of self and service, and instead returned to pouring over evaluations and reports.

Callie had come to her almost tentatively, and she welcomed her in. Venn drew her legs beneath her and shifted into amore cmfortabe spot, pushed the hair away from her eyes as she listened, nodding encouragingly.

“I’ve just had difficulties focusing. But that’s typical during shore leave. I like being out there…” she waved toward the window looking out over the dark vastness of space. “I can think better out there. It’s easier to concentrate.”

"Completely natural, Callie. It'sn entirely healthy response in certain types of individuals. What are sme of the things you've been doing to refocus?"

Venn's soft green eyes watched Kennedy's shoulders, the set of jaw and hands, and noted the faint signs of fatigue around the eyes.

((OOC: Allows for respnses))

"And how are you sleeping? Are you getting enough rest?"

It was a window to the issue lying beneath the conversation, the ones which she had been gently coaxing from Kennedyfor some time. Many found it difficult to open up initially to someone they did nt know, fearful of judgements or being told they were wrong, r even fearfull of being right. But in the time she had worked with Callie, Venn had found her emtionally guarded, and new it was because f great pain that she did not feel ready to part with yet.

Some needed to hold on to it, Venn herself was more than aware of that, but she hoped Callie would open up to her more often, as she had been doing lately.

"I'm not here to judge," venn added softly. "I'm just here to help you find a way through it."

Venn leaned back, fighting off the slight diziness from Mac's frenetic pacing. Though his tones ranged frm sharp to rough to frustrated, she could understand not only the source, but his inability to process any more of it. Her wayward bangs fell forward again, obscuring her vision momentarily before she swept them out of the way.

"There will always be chaos, it's why we come here. It's why we try. But perhaps your coworkers can sense your mounting tensions, hence the friendly wagers. You're tense. You're irritable. So, despite the current climate and your substanial workload, you need to relax yourself."

There a shadow passed over her eyes as she thought for a brief moment of her father, who had worked himself into a failed relationship with her incorrigible and wayward mother, and into an early grave. How often had they had this same conversation, her and the great Max Romanov? Venn pushed aside the darkened thoughts and forced herself to smile, moved her focus back to the moment at hand.

Venn shook her head and pointed at the empty seat, commanding with a delicately arched brow and asoft smile. "Jack, the world is always going to need saving. And you're always going to think you need to work longer and harder than you already are. So, instead of thinking of fun and relaxation as the enemey, start thinking of your stress as the enemy and make yourself more aware of how to fight it."

She watched him, brilliantly suffocating her smile at his appearant issues with the seating.

"And to be honest, it's a whole lot less paperwork for me if you just stop fighting it and take some R&R rather than have me make it an order. And you wouldn't want that now, would you?"

((leaving room for appropriate responses)))

"I want you to do two things. One, page me when you have some time after you shift. I've been working on a little something that might help, and I would you to try it out. And no-" she raised a finger to stop the expected rebuttal. "No, you're allowed to know what it is. Just that it was designed with your best interests in mind. The second thing I'd like you to do is compose a letter home. I mean, on paper."

Venn rose and crossed the room, retrieveing a stack of parchment frm her desk, bound in a blue ribbon, and a long slender shallow box. Her thoughts moved to her mother, who'd sent them to her in a box shotrly after running home to her father. She'd never used them to write MAressa, mostly never knwing where her mother was.

Returning to the couches, she handed them to Mac and smiled. "The physical act of writing out what troubles ones soul often allows the troubled soul to put things into a clearer perspective. Wite out everything that's bothering you, without censoring yourself. Everything, no matter how insignificant you might find it. Pet peeves, minor gripes, put it all in there, and bring the letter with you to our next session. I'm not ging to read it. but we'll work on an excercise that will help straighten out some of your internal clutter."

She smiled again. "Go on then. Promise me you'll do as I ask and you can go about your day.And Jack," She reached out and placed a hand on his, as she did at the end of each of her sessions. The physical act of touch was something sh found lacking on society in general, and the momentary connection was always meant to inspire warmth and comfort. "Thank you for making time to come here today. I hope you are able to take something postive from it and find a way to use that in your day."

((OOC: Room, as always for respones and whatnots, and much fun had. Thanks for the breaking-in, Eol! And now for my next victim...er...patient?))

The force of nature that burst into her office broke her from her reverie, startling her into an alertness that bordered on panic, until she processed the source of the storm. Inwardly sighing, she smiled warmly and blinked as she organized a few scattered thoughts and tapped the display, closing out Mac's lengthy -and colorful- file. From the look of him, there was smethine clearly amiss, and relief registered behind the smile, relief that he was finally taking control of his emotins, rather than shunting them off to the side.

“A’right, Venn,” Mac blustered, not waiting for the hatch to close behind him nor bothering to take the seat that he knew the counselor was bound to offer, “I’m bloody well ‘ere! Shall we get this oota th’ way so I c’n fargin’ get back tae thinkin’ clearly, then?”

"You know, Jack," she teased gently. "I don't believe the door's done anything to you...today, at least. I'm glad you're here, I was starting become a little concerned."

((Allowing for some response, though I'm pretty sure I just heard Mac grunt indignantly...))

Coming out from behind the desk, she made her way over to the soft wasabi-green cushioned settes where her guests typically found themselves. brushing a dark fringe of gangs frm her eyes, she leaned in, elbows on knees, and ccked her head. Though she studied him, her eyes remained soft and concerned, rather than clinical and hard. "You can put down the sword now Jack. It's just us. And you know you're not going to intimidate me into letting you out of this office till we have your head back on straight."

Venn watched him reacting, and arched a brow. "Why don't we start off easy. How are you?"

((Allowing response))

As he spoke, Venn paid close attention to his hands, and wondered idly if she shouldn't perhaps engage the lock to prevent him from storming off. He wasn't going to do the ship much good at all in this condition, but she had enough confidence in him to stay. It was a step in the right direction, she proudly noted, that he knew where to go when his mind was too full.

"Well, it's no wonder you came through that door like that. I imagine the pressure has been getting to you for some time now."

Crosing her legs, she sat back, and paused. "You've been putting in some dangerously long hours, Jack. When was the last time you had real, actual fun?" She raised her hand to cut off any protest and frowned. "A pint doesn't qualify."

((awaiting another response))

"Hmm...I see. That's quite some time....You know that it's integral to your inner balance to let that part of you out to play once in a while, right? Tell me," she asked quietly, a knowing softness in her voice. "what would you do if time, location, and your responsibilities were not an issue?"

((responsiveness))

As the words came, she began devising, strategizing his new recreation requirements, and figuring how to fit them with a new holosession she had been working on for him.

Subject: Lt. Venice I. Constantine

Stardate: 2368.04.10 - 0900
USS Discovery, Counsellor's Office, Deck 6

Lt. Venn Constantine touched fingertips to temples, massaging in slow circles as the early ache and throb of a headache crept across her, coiling up within her skull unkindly. There was a moment, just one, where she longed for nothing more than to curl back up beneath her sheets and sleep the day away, indulgent and lethargic and unproductive. But the day waited. Her patients - how she disliked that term - needed her in their various ways.

The kind ear, the sounding board, the mother figure, the disciplined friend, the conscientious stranger... and as they unburdoned themselves, as they lay at her feet thier troubles and doubts, as they sat with her, small and vulnerable, Venn listened. She observed. She noted, nudged, and encouraged freedom of self, of expression, of anger and emotion and release.

Maressa had tought her, so very long and so many lives ago, the value of creative expression, and though her education had directed her into certain schools of tought, she had always believed that the best way to reach the balance within oneself was to simply let it all out. These walls had held witness to tears, and screaming, thrown objects, and spontaneous dancing. Oh yes, there had been dancing. These walls had witnessed happiness, celebrations of joy, and moments of peace. And it was those moments Venn Constantine liked best.

Maressa of the wayward soul. Maressa of the ever changing. Was she happy, wherever she was now? Was she in one place, still and unmoving? Or was she gone again, off to another planet, another stage, never herself for anyone, even her own child? The throbbing in her head threatened to expand, to crack her skull with a ferocious roar, and she pushed aside thoughts of her mother, of the past, of the endless procession of new names and new places and new planets, and refocused herself on the present, the now, the her she had been for years now, in the same place, sill and unmoving, like her mother never taught her to be.

It was here she was needed. It was here she was meant to be, where she could do the most good. Something Maressa woud never have understood. She gave these people something, something they needed.

Some needed only place to vent, others needed guidance, but some.... some held onto the pain of the past and carried it with them, like a talisman, like a badge of honor. Some wouldn't even talk, staring ahead instead in stony silence. But all of them, every one, were unique, and she was meant to be there for them. Because Venn needed them, in a way they would never understand. The dull throb in her skull was subsiding already; not opening her eyes helped. However, she was fairly certain not even her most understandieng of patients would tolerate talking to a woman who looked like she would rather be napping.

A smile passed her leips as she moved, shifted, i her seat and sat straightr, opening her eyes again and seeing the day before her as a chance to heal herself, while helping others heal themselves. As soft emerald eyes played over the lines of text that exposed, in a clinical and detatched manner, the story of their outter lives, she looked for the deeper meanings, the reasons for their traumas, their worries and fears. Her first appointment was due in an hour. An hour to plan, to devise, to construct...

And as she thought, as she read, Venn lost herself in the consctucts of hr field, the battlefields of the mind and emotions, and let the time slip away from her.
