Subject: Thank You to the Red Dragon Inn

Back in 2010 I was looking around for ways to restart the roll playing style of gaming I had done in my youth and I came across this site.  In truth, a group I was a part of found it when looking for a place to host a game, and I tagged along.  I absolutely fell in love with play-by-post gaming.  I love the games and I love the writing.  I have also really enjoyed the people I have met here.  I may not have ever met any of them in person, but I feel like I got to know some of them beyond their characters and campaigns.  This site became a place that I loved to check online and I quickly joined almost every game that would have me.  I have to admit, I stuck them out longer than pretty much anyone else as I don't think I ever quit a game - I played and posted until they died under me.

Honestly, it is hard for me to say "thank you" to the Inn strongly enough.  This was a little community I fit into.  This was a little community that welcomed me.  This was a site that played in a way I loved playing.  And I have loved everything I have done on this site for the last 14 years.  Sadly, it does seem that the lights are going out in the Inn.  There are no other active games here and the one I have been running for quite some time appears to be dead as well.  It is with great sadness, but many, many thanks for the last 14 years, that I close down my time here at the Inn.

But . . . if anyone is interested in getting a campaign going - as player or GM - just post away as I might well be lurking to see if life returns!

Thanks to the Red Dragon Inn and all the Innmates I have known over the years for many great campaigns and posts!

Subject: Sadness and ending

It does seem that the posts have gotten fuirther and fiurther between.  A bit of it was my own fault - life in the last few months got crazy.  But it also seemed that I haven't been able to get people to post consistently as players.  Or I would get posts i couldn't do much with as a DM.  All of which means . . . that it seems the time has come to pull the plug on the Blacktooth Ridge.  I am sad to see it go - it started as a purchased module but progressed from there into something of my own.  And I was enjoying the story.  But without an active base it was hard to keep up.  And so it seems to end here.

If some of you want to continue I would pledge to do a post a week.  I think I am past the craziness that messed that up so I can do that pretty easily most of the time.  If people ask for it I would do it - as I truly love play by post.  But for now we will call the game here.

Subject: What does the bird see?

(Charmed doesn't give you any real control over a creature - it just means they can't attack you and that you have advantage on interactions with them.  Sice you can speak with animals for a little while this gives you a chance to encourage the bird to fly where you want but you can't be confident about what it will end up doing.)

After thanking his new little friend for the information Uthal cast Beast Sense on the creature and encouraged it to fly toward's where the Hangman Tree was likely to be.  At first the bird circled his head a few times, flitting from branch to branch.  Clearly the river's edge was its home and flying deeper into the woods was not a normal thing for the bird to do.  But with a little more encouragement the bird zipped up above the trees and flew away from the river while unwittingly carrying the druid's sense as a passenger.

The trip was a bit disorienting for the big man. Little Tweety did not seem to feel the need to fly directly towards its target but rather flitted from tree to tree taking in the sights and looking for bugs.  At times Uthal wasn't sure if the bird remembered its mission but gradually it made its way westward.  The first thing that Uthal noticed was that the line of hills that they had been told to expect was exactly where it was supposed to be.  At first there were barely noticable bumps in the hilltops but gradually it became clear that a line of gradually rising hills was marching away from the river.  They were not big, but they were there.

After flying for sometime (it was very hard for the druid to estimate distances "as the bird flies") he could see a hill rise in front of him that rose above the trees.  As they approached it was clear that an old tree stood out on the hilltop.  From a distance it looked large and dead.  There was no foliage left on the tree despite the presence of leaves on all of the other trees in the woods.  As the druid squinted through the birds eyes he thought he might be seeing some things dangling from the branches . . . were they  . . .?  He couldn't quite tell when all of a sudden the bird sqeeked and dove for the branches below.  A dark shadow crossed over head as a group of crows swarmed around.  The little brd zipped through the branches below and immediately headed back towards the river and home.  Clearly it wanted nothing to do with the crows.

Overview

You did not gain perfect knowledge but you did learn that the hills do go away from the river in a line.  A tree does sit on top of a hill and might be a dead Hangman's Tree but Uthal coulgn't be sure.  The arrival of the crows prevented confirmation of the tree or scouting of where the bandits might be located.  Tweety is not willing to go back after his enounter with the mean crows.

Welcome to the Inn.

Things have been slow lately - there used to be a bunch of play-by-post games going all the time of many different varieties.  Right now there is just one.  I hope it grows again and new members make that more likely.   But int he mean time - the Blacktooth Ridge campaign is the one that is going.  In fact, I hope to get a post up tonight.  It is a 5e D&D Campaign.  If you are interested, take a read of the main game thread - the Blacktooth Ridge.  The Q&A part is for discussions.  Check it out and ask questions.

Subject: Map . . . .Huh

Made a map and took a picture of it like I have in the past.  But now when I try and email it to myself my laptop can't open and display it like it has with every other image or map I've made.  I don't know why.  Weird.  But I have the map made.  I will try again with a different computer tomorrow.

In the meantime - a word picture.

As you look down the road it travels through the woods.

To your right is the Hreusen River about 15-20 feet away through the woods.

To your left is the Barren Woods.  Big, old trees as far as the eye can see.

On the left side of the road and going back into the woods is a large 20x20x20 boulder.  ,Behind it apears to be a small hill Essentially imagine a line of hills going away from the road on the left - perpendicular to the road.  They appear rugged and don't climb out of the woods.  Rocky, but not high.  You think this is the case based on what Captain Rambolt said and what you think you can see, but you really don't ssee much because of the trees.  You see trees.  And more trees.  And then some more trees.

Subject: Continuing

We have at least 4, maybe 5, people that are posting now.  I don't know when/if anyone of the others will come back.  So if we want the game to continue I think we go with what we have.  It is enough.  If we wait we may be waiting a long time.

As for tanking v. planking, if I understand the concept correctly, there is some basic information I need about what the group is doing.  I don't like making assumptions - for example, which side of the line of hills you follow or who is in the lead - inc ase I get it wrong.  But I can do so and just move things along.  Just know that if I do so you get sort of stuck with what I post.  The more information you as a group can give me the better.  In this case, casting Pass Without a Trace was mentioned but I really need to know when that is done.  If done at the road, which would be a logical assumption from what was said, the spell will have worn off by the time you get to the Hangman Tree.  If cast a later, which would make more sense in some ways, exactly when might make a bif difference.

Subject: The little bird says "tweet"

While his companions looked for signs of activity and kept watch, Uthal decided to try and find out what the animals of the area had to say.  With the benefit of a few worms and a Animal Friendship spell he made friends with a small songbird that was flitting around the roadway.  Followed up with Speak with Animals and the druid had a tiny source of information on the woods.

Urging his new friend to tell him if anyone had been by here recently he got a lilting and sing-song list of different passersby:  Squirrels (many times and so chatty!), Crows (annoying and arrogant), the whole neighborhood of birds (including brother Bobin, Sister twig, and his six nieces and nephews – Flit, Whit, Little Knit, Dewey, Bewey and Oswald), a scary snake (ugly and it tried to eat Dewey!), some big hairy things pulling tipped over trees (horses with wagons?) accompanied by some people and last night there were some wolves. (They don’t bother little birds but that deer sure ran quickly.  So did the wolves.)  There was also reference to some animals on the river and the presence of bugs and worms.

Even with the benefit of the spell the conversation took some interpretation.  After some conversation and probing questions, it appeared that it had been a pretty normal last day in the woods.  The only activity by bigger people or creatures appeared to have been the two caravans you already knew about and the wolves.  Frustratingly little birds don’t have the greatest memories and the helpful bird couldn’t remember anything prior to about the last 24 hours.  But in that time, nobody had returned to the site of the battle.

Subject: Dwarven Perception

Gerdar's Perception check at the site of the attack:

The road:  Nobody is around on the road as far as you can see.  Clearly people have travelled along the road since your battle two days earlier.  The scorch marks from the fireball have been disturbed and smeared so the footprints must have come post-fireball.  You did meet one small caravan (only 2 wagons) headed towards Ludensheim on your way out this morning.  Are there more footprints than just that group would create?  Probably.  Maybe.  Yu really don't know.  You are a dwarf and not a ranger.

The woods and living things:  All is currently quiet except for the few birds and squirrels that Uthal is looking for.  Nothing bigger moves.

The woods and signs of past traffic:  It is fairly easy to spot the scenes where battle took place even for an inexpert eye.  There are no clear signs that you can see of any movement in the area (not including the road) that wouldn't be accounted for by the battle.

In response to Uthal's questions:  There are several small birds in the area.  If you want ground creatures you can easily find a few squirrels fairly nearby.  No hawk currently presents itself as the woods are quite thick.  If you went to the river (A very short walk) you would likely find some form of bird of prey if you took about 20 minutes or so.

Subject: Money

A modest night at an inn is 5 sp and a modest meal is 3 sp.  (SP = SIlver Piece.  There are 10 SP in one gold piece.)  Add a couple of mugs of ale or any other bits of extra and at most it is 10 Sp/1gp for each day. You can spend more or less if you want but on the whole this is a "modest" level inn so except for food or excessive amounts of drink that is about what it would cost.

D'Harum - sleeping on the floor of the inn is not typical but given your mankish nature and your performance would be allowed.  Assuming you also get a bit of food and entertain the guests you could eat and sleep on the floor for only 2sp.  This option is not open to everyone in the party.  Being a monk (who can perform) changes the rules slightly.  Little Gerry seems to like this quiet monk.

Subject: The deep, dark woods

After only a little discussion it was clear that everyone in the group was in favor of going after the bandits.  As the night lengthened Uthal brought the news to Captain Ramboldt, D’Harum entertained the crowd and Fenris, Soledad and Gerdar sat quietly and watched the inns patrons.  Eventually all took a rest so that they were ready to meet up again at first light.

Early the following morning the group was ready to leave.  (No horse and cart this time – I am assuming they were returned to the guards and your security deposit was returned.)   It felt much like it had two days before as the group left town by the Field Gate.  They passed through the surrounding towns and passed into the woods.  The road passed through the edges of the wood keeping the river to the right.  About 15 miles along the group came to the place where they had been attacked two days previously.  Most of the signs of combat were hard to spot unless you knew what to look for except for the 40’ burned zone from the fireball which was hard to miss.

Assuming the group was headed towards the Hangman’s Tree this was the place to leave the road.  (I am assuming this but your posts seemed to indicate it even if it wasn’t directly stated.  If you prefer the other possible location, the Konigsqueren stream crosses the road about 8 miles further along.)  You can see the small hill/rock that the bandit leader had used to stand on and make his demands before being engulfed in Soledad’s nasty cloud.  Looking further back in the woods you can now tell that there was a line of small hills leading away from the road and the river.  At least you think there is.  The tall trees of the Barren Woods made it hard to see much of anything.  There was this first hill and then it seemed things tended uphill a bit.  Standing back on the other side of the road and trying to get a broader view didn’t do much good either.  Captain Ramboldt had said that there was a line of small hills here that extended back and about 5 miles in you would find the hill with the Hangman’s Tree.

Overview and What Comes Next

At this point I do need more information from the group.  You are about to head off into the woods.  Please consider the following:

  1. Marching order in the woods. Single file is probably necessary.

  2. I assume you will try to stick along the side of the line of hills to follow it back. North side or south side?  Is there anything else you want to do or consider as you go back?

  3. Visibility is limited in an old forest. Is there anything you want to do to make sure you don’t miss the Hangman’s Tree?  Five miles was an approximate and most people wouldn’t know exactly when they hit 5 miles anyway.

  4. Are you taking any precautions along the walk or when you get close?

  5. The hideout is near the hill with the Hangman’s Tree, but you don’t know much more than that. I wouldn’t take the next post much past your first bit of new information but how do you want to react if you find anything?

In general, the more specific you can be the easier it makes my job.  I can also take the next post a bit further the more I know.  FYI – the spell Pass Without a Trace was mentioned.  It lasts 1 hour.  If the tree is about where it is expected, it will take at least 2 hours to get there – possibly closer to 3 since you are travelling through woods and rugged terrain with no path.  Given that, when would you want to cast it?  Also, it gives you advantages on stealth checks – but if you are not trying to be stealthy its uses are more limited.  It would increase the odds of not being seen but not eliminate the chance.  Trying to be stealthy as you move is possible but would cut your movement speed in half.  If you wish to do so – at what point in the journey would you begin this?  The spell does prevent you from being tracked if that becomes an issue.

I will try and post a map tomorrow – I can’t do it today.  Really, no map is needed for this stage – it is just heading back into the woods so please don’t wait for a map to post.

And then there were 4.

I do have a question about Fenris - Tann is not able to play right now due to real life issues.  But I hold out hope that he can return to the game at some point.  If you want I can keep Fenris in the game as an NPC - I would run him and he would simply do the logical thing.  he would follow the groups plan and contribute what he can including basic fighting but wouldn't add new ideas.  He would essentially be like a mercenary the party hired but would financially be part of the group.  This gives you one more character and skill set and keeps him in there.  Or I can just drop him from the game.  It is easy enough to add him in later if Tann wants to/can rejoin.  I will account for his presence or absence as we go so it isn't as if you need him there.  What do you want?

Post probably coming tomorrow - Tuesday.

Subject: Gathering Info at the Goat

A couple of comments

*The inclusion of the bodies of the dead bandits does not significantly change the attitude of captain Rambolt although he does seem a touch more impressed with your work.  With proof of more than just the 3 captives you are offered 20 gp for the days work and not just 10.

*The captain didn’t really let much slip that you wouldn’t think he should know.  He had warned you about a possible wizard before you left town the first time.  As for the half-orc, I had posted that you “told the basic story,” and I assumed that would have included that detail.  I wasn’t given any detail of what you would or would not say to the captain.  I don’t think this is a big deal and we can change it slightly so you didn’t give such details, but you should not interpret it as Captain Ramboldt giving anything away.  You noticed no slips.

Continuing the story

The group left the guard station promising to return in the morning.  No promise was made about continuing the bandit hunt – the group wanted to know what information was extracted from the prisoners before making up their minds about what to do next.  Captain Ramboldt had suggested the Drunken Donkey for the night but instead the group returned to the Fainting Goat where they had stayed previously.  The taverns proprietor and primary bar maid, Little Gerry, was back at her post and welcomed them all back to the Inn.  Good food and beverages of various sorts were to be had as the group considered their days work.

In the morning the group returned to the guard station.  They had to wait 15 minutes for Captain Rambolt to appear – it seems he was at the Duke’s keep where the prisoners had been taken.  While the group waited it was impossible not to hear a couple of the guards snickering over what had happened to he prisoners.  A few snippets such as, “I’m sure I heard ‘em through the stone!” and “We all know what Ol’ Jacky likes to do with those tongs!”  While you wouldn’t bet the price of a mug of ale that these two knew much more than in which direction the sun came up, but clearly the prisoners had not had a pleasant night of things.  But when the captain returned the snickering stopped abruptly and you were summoned into his office.

“Ok, so the Questioners did their job as they always do.  And the prisoners talked as they always do.  Now, did they tell the truth?  Well, ‘what they always do’ is a bit harder to pin down on that point.  But there is likely some truth in it.  If you take the job, don’t go in assuming you know everything, but there is probably some information to work with here.  It seems two of them were family – that always seems to make Jack excited.”  The Captain did not seem as excited by that as the mysterious Jack  had been.

“There were two things we were primarily interested in – where and who.  Where is the base camp and what sort of resistance might you encounter?  Those are the keys in an operation like this.   We got two separate claims about locations – one was along the Konigqueren stream about 5 miles into the woods.  The other was near a large hill marked at the top by an old Hangman’s Tree – and actual tree with nooses it uses to catch its prey.  That tree is dead now and the hill does exist.  It should be about 5 miles in from where you were attacked.  That location was notable for a small hill in the woods – part of the same line that the Hangman’s Hill is in.  Follow that line and you find the hill.  Do you find the bandits?  After some encouragement two of them gave that information separately.  So it seems more likely than the stream.”

“Now the who – well they admit the wizard readily enough. And annoyance called “Felkirk” apparently.  You already know he can throw fireballs.  The leader of the band is a man, not the half-orc mind, named Thomal Ridgeway.  Or at least that is what he is going by now.  That matches what I knew before, by the way.  He’s a sword.  So is the orc.  They are the biggest blades.  Should be a cleric in there.  Don’t know of what.  Other people came up but were jumbled.  Those 4 are the big ones.  Probably.”

At this point the Captain paused and twirled his quill in his hand a little.  “We did get a little something else.  It seems they have some contacts to the East.  East.  That means across the river and into the Ridge.  We have had some trouble on the Ridge side of the river already.  New Town, the farms on that side of the river, have been plagued by more than the usual number of raids recently.  If these bandits are somehow in league with them, I’d like to know.  I’m not sure about that – it seems unlikely as most of the bandits that use the woods for cover are just poor and desperate locals.  Those types don’t trek with the Ridge.  But then this group got themselves a mage.  So, maybe.  But information on that connection might be worth a few extra gold if there was proof one way or the other.  And that was offered as a bargaining chip – it wasn’t specifically asked for.  Does that make it more likely to be true?”  That last part didn’t seem aimed at the party so much as just the musings of a soldier.

“Well, what do you say?  Want to go hunting for some bandits?  You likely won’t be able to play the role of the victim this time around.  After the whooping you gave ‘em they might be in hiding.  At the least they won’t attack the same group.  So you’ll need to follow them to their lair.  Same deal as last time, see?  The rest of the gold if you get them all.  A bonus, see, if you get info on the Ridge connection.”  The group did not seem ready to respond immediately so the Captain followed up with, “Take the day and think about it.  Go back to the Goat and talk.  I’d be happy to have you take this on but if not there are others out there who might.  Come back – preferably tonight but if not in the morning – and let me know what you intend.  If there is any more information extracted, I’ll certainly fill you in on it.”

With that the party was ushered out and headed back to the Fainting Goat to discuss their options.

Options

The above is the general take on the conversation with the captain.  If there are parts of it you want to ask specific questions on – please feel free to do so. You never know if there is more information available unless you ask.  He will provide a very limited map should you choose to take the job.  And, as always, don’t feel like you have to take the job.  Things can always go in a different direction if your characters want to do that.

We will pause here to make sure that everone contributes.  That will also give us a clear shot of who is still interested.

What's the plan?

Also, we currently seem to be down to 4 active characters:  Soledad, D'Harum, Geldor and Uthal.  It is a small group, but workable.  I am inclined to keep one at least one of the others with you to make things a bit more doable, but Thaoran and/or Fenris (I still hope Tann can rejoin us when real life stops kicking him.) will not take a lead in party actions.

Subject: A job 1/2 Done

By the time the group returned to Ludenshiem it was getting dark.  They had received some strange stares by the farmers nearer the town and now received the same treatment from the guards at the gate.  Seeing the prisoners bound in the back of the cart the leader looked at the party strangely.  But before he could speak the lady yelled, “Help!  Guard!  They are trying to make us slaves!  They seized us from our farm!  They are lying!  Help us!  Free us!”   The younger woman, taking her cue from the elder, started sobbing and begging for aid.

Quickly several other guards came over to the cart and held weapons at the ready and demanded an answer from the group.  When the group quickly explained their errand and the true nature of the situation (Over the protestations of the prisoners) the sergeant at the gate nodded.  He spoke to another guard saying, “Dinky, run to the captain and confirm that he hired these folks.  Return with his orders.”  The small young man ran off quickly.  Looking back at the party he addressed them.  “I can’t have others holding prisoners in town besides the guard.  We will hold your prisoners in the guard house until Dink returns.  In the meantime the you can take your cart to that spot over there and wait.  It shouldn’t be more than a few minutes.”  He pointed toward a location a few yards to the left of the gate – outside the walls.  He then went back to ignoring the party.

**Assuming you allow this to all happen…

About 10 minutes later the guard known as Dinky came back – trotting this time.  After speaking with the sergeant for a couple of minutes Dinky and the sergeant approached the group again.  “Ok, it seems your story checks out, at least the basics of it.  Dink here will get the prisoners and then lead you to the guard house.  Don’t leave him.  We will let you deliver your prize, but now that you are in town those are no longer your prisoners.  They belong to me now, Dink as your get there and the guard post after that.”  Dinky quickly brought the prisoners back out and had them put back in the cart.  They continued to protest their innocence as you headed into town.  You heard the sergeant say as you left, “Shoulda thought of that before you became robbers.  You will be crying a lot louder soon.”

The group moved quickly through town – after sundown there wasn’t much traffic beyond those going to or coming from the various taverns.  The guard house was not far from the field gate and when they arrived they were met by Captain Rambolt, the same man that had sent them out that morning.  “Quick work.  Not even a full day and you return with prizes.  Although they hardly look like the ringleaders.”  With that he looked at you a bit and pointed to his office to indicate that it was time to talk.

Taking a seat behind his desk the party variously sat in chairs or leaned against the wall depending on personal choice and the availability of chairs.  “Ok, 3 prisoners.  Tell me what happened.”  It was now time for the group to speak.

*If any of you wish to write out this description for detail or to emphasize certain points feel free to do so.*

The group told the basic story of their trap and the ensuing bandit attack.  The assault, combat and deaths were described.  After you finished Captain Ramboldt spoke again.  “Hmmm . . . well, that makes a start, see?  A few dead and a few captured.  But all underlings by the look and sound of it.  There was a wizard – and he got away. The spokesperson got away.  That big half-orc go away.  As did at least a couple of others.  So the beast has been scratched, but not badly injured, see?  They might take this as a sign to move to safer hunting grounds or they might just be more cautious, and likely more brutal, in their next attack.  Did you scare them away, or just poke a hornet’s nest, see?”

The large captain paused a bit before continuing.  “Well, the job is only at best half-done.  Not even that much that we can be sure of.  The promise was 100 gp, but that was to clear them out.  They aren’t cleared out.  So the question is, are you done or not?  We will keep the prisoners here tonight and put them to the question.  Assuming they do turn out to be bandits, I’m not doubting you on that score we just have to be sure, you can come back in the morning and I’ll pay you 10gp for your efforts so far.  Not the full 100, but then the job isn’t done, see?”  He paused a moment to see how the group responded.  “At that point you can go out and try again.  Try and get the leaders. Wipe out all of them.  We may have more information by then to help you.  You can take the night to decide what you want to do.   Maybe go across the way to the Drunken Donkey and talk about it.  The problem, it seems, will still exist in the morning.”

As the group moved out of his office he added, “Leave the cart here.  In the morning we can decide if it will be needed again.  Ask the sergeant out there for your 15gp back for the cart.”   The group got their money back and left.

Overview

At this point you need to decide if you think you want to go after the bandits again.  I will soon add more information (what the questioners got from the prisoners) but wanted to get this posted without it first.  There are several spots in the story above that you might interject comments or questions.  Feel free to do so.  Or decide a bit as a group if you want to hunt bandits again.  If not, there are other options.

The older woman who had been the spokesperson for the others listened as D'Harum spoke about returning them to the authorities.   "Justice?  You think we will receive justice in that town?  Hah!  We are out here because the Lord of that town cares only about his own"  She spat at the ground near the monks feet, clearly missing but expressing her feelings for the lord of Ludensheim.  "And why would we negotiate with you if you are to hand us over to the authorities anyway?  Anything we know would be best given to them directly.  It won't likely save us, but if there is any chance it is with them, not you.  You think the head of the guard will care what we told someone else when the time comes?  Nor will you get credit for any information.  If you won't free us to honor your pledge, do it for profit.  Knowing where the leaders are will get you more than the heads of a few underlings."

She left the comment there, hoping for some reaction.  She looked at each in their turn but got nothing but stares back.  The only one to comment was the dwarf, who spoke of the crime of banditry and its consequences.  Looking down she spoke to the other two prisoners and said quietly,  "We must the guard captain has more interest in dealing.  Stay strong.  Tears won't help."

**Based on previous comments from the group I am assuing that her further comments don't change your mind.  But if anyone wishes to ask more questions at this point please speak up.  i will move things forward, but we can come back to this point if needed.**

The group quickly gathered their things and counted the dead.  The prisoners had their bindings checked and were put intot he wagon.  Then the group turned around and headed back to town.

**A second post about returning the prisoners to the captain of the guard will be coming shortly.

Well, I just had a long stretch that made getting on line hard - the last week was spent trapsing around the Rockies with no internet worthy of a post.  So I will update based on whatever I have tomorrow sometime - Thursday.
