The firework-wielding goblin made a small target between Fox and Alexis. Zwie took careful aim not wishing to start another fight just yet and released. He overcompensated on his shot, the arrow flew wide and landed in the doorframe behind her.

Nona stepped back and prepared for things to get hairy in this village-fort. She pulled a small strip of cured leather from a pocket. With her magic she wove a protective translucent barrier around her torso while Alexis attacked. The bleeding goblin backed off from Alexis' assault, ducking her sword and avoiding her shield.

For a moment, the goblin's attention was focused entirely on Alexis—and away from Fox. Fox took the opportunity to stick her dagger between her shoulder blades (-5snkdmg Goblin C), finishing her off before she knew what hit her (Dying).

The goblin clasped to the walkway and the firework rolled out of her hand. The tube fired another, green ember bouncing between Alexis' heels, then coming to a stop at Nona's feet.

Besides the odd bang from the firework tube, the village-fort fell silent once again.

The goblin hunters waited outside the door, prepared to strike at the first sight if green. Fox drew a dagger in preparation for close combat.

A pair of muffled high pitched shrieks came from within the hut. The door swung inward and out charged a crazed goblin with a dogslicer raised overhead. It didn't get more than two steps out before Zwei's arrow pierced its upraised arm (-3dmg Goblin B). Alexis and Fox struck together. Alexis thrust low and stabbed into the goblins gut (-4dmg), Fox sliced into the side of its neck (-3snkdmg).

The goblin's body didn't have time to drop to the floor before his eager comrade crashed headlong into him, throwing him from the walk into the mud below (Dead). The new goblin held a strange wooden tube about a foot long sparking and smoking at one end. She pointed the smoking end toward Alexis.

Alexis didn't want to find out what the goblin had just pointed at her face, she slashed across the goblins chest cutting through its dirty leather armour (-6dmg Goblin C). The goblin howled in defiance, clutching the smoking tube with blood spreading from her wound. Without warning, a glowing red flair erupted from the end of the tube and struck Alexis in the neck. It stung like a hot coal (-1fire, -1sub Alexis) before bouncing off to the ground.

The smell of burnt flesh and smoke clung to the goblin village. Fox and Zwei approached the smashed gate first, staying low to keep out of sight of any goblins who might be on watch. After a moment they signalled the others to follow.

Ten feet into the village-fort lay a shallow muddy pit, filled with the bodies of a dozen mostly cremated goblins. There was no other movement besides the faint trail of smoke rising from the pyre. Around the mud pit stood three ramshackle huts on stilts, connected with walkways. One larger to the right of the gate along the palisade, with a wooden ladder up to the door and one smaller to the left in front of the lake also with a ladder. The group could see more buildings deeper into the village.

Fox and Zwei entered the village. Zwei took the hut on the right, while fox went for the one on the left. Zwei sighed at the tiny three-foot door on the hut before him. At least he didn't have to duck thanks to the stilts raising the door level. Carefully he pushed the door open. The hut was empty save for six well used bed furs. Zwei climbed into the hut eyes alert for signs of valuables.

On the other side Fox had entered the smaller hut. Also empty. From here the wide windows gave her clear view of the front gate. Out the opposite window was another building another of the larger buildings. If a fight broke out in these close quarters, her bow wouldn't be much use. Fox put her bow away, then stepped out onto the walkway confident in her arsenal of hidden weapons to keep her safe.

Immediately, movement caught Fox's eye. For a brief second she locked eyes with a panicked looking goblin through the window of the next hut before it vanished behind a flap with a squeak.

"We've been spotted!" Sera chirped

Fox mentally cursed her luck as she released the dart hidden up her sleeve. She sent the talkative nightingale to fetch the others while she bided her time, watching the hut for movement.

Meanwhile, Zwei beheld the bent fork his searches had uncovered. Between that and the wealth of assorted buttons, he was done with this building. He stepped out onto the walkway to the next hut. Across the compound his counterpart was standing at the ready.

Fox's patience was rewarded when the goblin's face reappeared in the window. For its curiosity, Fox rewarded it with a dart to the face (-6snkdmg Goblin). Behind her, Nona and Alexis were climbing the ladder into the watch post. She stepped back from the window to give the others room.

In preparation for the fight, Zwei considered the best vantage point to snipe from. All things being equal he chose the hut ahead of him to climb. Once up he readied his bow and took aim at the door next to Fox.

The four decided that Alexis would make the best use of the cloak's magical protection. Walthus saw the goblin hunters off early the next day. They retraced their steps back along the soggy New Fish Trail across the three bridges with out a repeat of yesterdays events.

Upon crossing the invisible threshold on their way out of the swamp, the dense, muffling atmosphere fell away like a heavy blanket dropping from their shoulders. The sights and sounds of everyday life flooded their senses. It was as if everything that had happened sense they entered took place in another world.

Twenty minuets down the Lost Coast Road they came across the turn onto Old Fish Trail. The now familiar eerie silencing fog closed around them for a second time, welcoming them back. As before the sounds in the swamp the distorted animal calls and sudden movements just out of sight where enough to keep the four in edge.

The decades old ‘Old Fish Trail' was even more over grown than its newer counterpart to the north. It had obviously seen little use sense the goblins moved in. In spite of this, the solitary bridge proved just as sturdy as the others.

The splashing of something large wading through the swamp nearby alerted the group. They paused to see whether it was approaching or departing, but the sounds quickly faded in to the distance. Moments later they came across a strangely mutilated goblin carcass laying on the trial. The ground around the green skin corps was disturbed with partial footprints, but the hunters could make out one or two large, three-toed prints resembling the one that crossed their trail the day before.

Moving on the group came to a branch in the road, but carried on strait as per Walthus' instructions. They knew they couldn't be far from the village, so they armed themselves and prepared for a fight.

Around the next bend the crude village-fort finally came into sight. A wide gap in the wooden palisade caused by an algae-filled pool allowed a clear view into village's interior, a ramshackle collection of huts connected by wooden walkways, all built on think wooden stilts. A thin trail of smoke arose from somewhere behind the wall.

As they approached they realised that the wooded gate in the north wall if the palisade lay in shambles on the ground. Oddly, it seemed as if the doors had been smashed down from the inside, as if something were trying to get out.

The hunters did not see any goblins milling about the settlement from here.

Alexis followed Nona back into the dining room, supporting the weakened halfling. She asked for Fox's help with disposal of the wrinkled sack of flesh. The injured guardswoman lifted the monster's body with a grunt.

"Just don't bury the bastard out in the garden. And please, take it as far from the house as you can. I want to be able to sleep again in this lifetime," Walthus said, eyeing the corpse. He glanced at Fox. "You'll find a shovel in the storeroom. Upstairs, first door on the left."

Walthus turned to Nona. "Would you be a dear and take care of your friend's rags? You'll find clean water in the pantry. I just have to see to something in the garden." The halfling hopped off his chair, and stepped out of the dining room.

The next time Nona saw Walthus he was kneeling in the middle of a trio of vipers. He turned to see Nona standing in the door to the backyard. "Say hi to Fang, Wiggler, and Sophie. These babies saved my life," he explained, scratching one under the chin. "Sadly that monster killed two, before I got away. I'm just glad these fellas are still safe."

Walthus enlisted Nona's help with preparations for supper. While eager to do it himself, the blood loss he had suffered forced him to take frequent breaks. Soon supper was ready and the group sat down around Walthus' small table.

"So, Walthus," Nona said. "There has to be a story here—how does a man of your stature come to own a house of this... magnitude?"

"Well, it's pretty simple, really. When I arrived in Sandpoint five years ago, I'd had quite enough adventure for one lifetime, so I bought this place off a scam artist with most of my remaining coin. Bet the guy thought he got the better of me, but I got what I wanted anyway. The isolation suits me fine, and out here most people are looking for fish, not escaped Chelish slaves."

Walthus laughed. "She ain't much to look at, but she's home. Besides, my snakes love out here."

",one also wishes to know more about your encounter earlier. One has not heard any rumours of such a creature before from the town, and so its appearance is very curious," Fox added to Nona's posed question.

"I couldn't tell you what his beef was. The faceless bastard came on me yesterday when I was tending to my snakes in the garden. He nearly killed me by sucking my blood, but my snakes saved me and I got away. Since then I'd been hiding out in my saferoom until you folk came along.

"There're all manner of creepy crawlies livin' in this swamp, and I haven't met all of ‘em yet. Speaking of swamp critters, Nona tells me you're fishin' for some goblins. I've been out of commission for the last day, but I do know they've been rather more rambunctious than usual lately. I don't think they have the stones for a full-on attack, though. Even the Licktoads aren't that stupid, and no amount of fireworks would make them that brave.

"The Licktoads have their village at the end of the Old Fish Trail, right in the middle of the swamp. I don't know where in the swamp the nutters got their hands on fireworks though."

Walthus yawned loudly. "I ought to turn in and get a proper night's rest. To let you know, there is only one guest room, but I can move some stuff in the supply room, and you are free to camp out in the living room."

(16 Lama - Grigori)
Miguel braced to follow Kyrie and Giles, but something stopped him. He looked to the crowd of people who gathered around the speaker. The grumbles and the shouts, struck him. He felt their displeasure like a knife in his gut.

By the gods, he thought. Had they failed their people? Was this Grigori character right? What if he made a mistake? Their blood would be on his hands. He was the one who carried the title, officially. He was the one responsible if everything crumbled apart.

He wished he could feel Kyrie and Giles' confidence.

(17 Lama)
The small room that now served at the party's loot storage sat untouched for too long in a state of disarray. Miguel found himself enjoying the mundane task of taking inventory. Every item had a story attached to it, some which had grown more entertaining with time.

The baron scooped up the fanged elk-skull helmet. He popped it onto his head. "Hey, look, I'm the Stag Lord," he said. He drew his short bow and plucked on the string, firing on imaginary targets. Something inside the helmet shifted and jabbed him in the head.

"Hmm?" Miguel took off the helmet and peered inside. There he made an interesting discovery. Somewhere along the way, a thunderstone got stashed in the skull for transportation. "Whoops, that wouldn't have been good."

He hung the helmet on a hat stand, inspecting the stone. It took him a moment to remember where it had come from and what it was doing in their pile of loot. "Hey guys, remember this? This is the thunderstone that Adela gave to Frodrick when we raided their camp. Seems so long ago now."

He popped the small stone in his pocket. It wouldn't do to lose that again and have it detonate unexpectedly. He could store it properly later once they had finished cleaning.

(Grigori)
Miguel blinked as Grigori's enchantment faded. The speakers words replayed in his mind, what a load of aurochs dung, he realised. This was nothing more than a false front, a façade. All this was just a tool to undermine the people's faith, and weaken the leadership of the nation.

They needed to get him out of Volga, one way or another. Left unchecked this man could do more damage than a dozen werewolves. The sooner he could be exiled or even—he hesitated at the thought—executed.

"Yes whatever 'he' was is dead, sorry about the mess I'll help clean up after I patch myself up. Walthus? The real Walthus? come on out, I'm Alexis Gunwalder with the Sandpoint militia you're safe now."

Alexus and Nona went up the stairs coming into a hall with three doors at the end. The last door opened revealing a halfling man who looked familiar. He looked pale and practically hung from the doorknob. Seeing the two women, he collapsed to his knees in relief, sobbing. “Oh thank mercy!”

Walthus crawled to his feet. “Thank you for saving my life and driving that monster off.” The warden approached Alexus and Nona, catching a glimpse out the window. “It’s getting dark. Zwei removed the small sheath from his kama’s blade and stepped in to the doorway to block the monster’s escape. On the opposite side of the dining room, Fox ran to behind the Walthus imposter. Just as it was noticing it was surrounded on all sides, Zwei and Fox struck together.

Zwei’s kama sliced through the rubbery flesh of the faceless monster’s torso (-10snkdmg Monster Badly wounded). Fox stabbed her dagger into the space between his shoulder and neck, severing a muscle (-5snkdmg *crit* -1str,-5dex Monster near death). The monster clutched at its neck in pain and released a gutter howl.

Alexis took advantage of the distraction, and tugged herself free of the monsters grasp without much resistance. She slipped her arm into the strap of her shield and prepared for its next attack.

The room was too crowded to unleash anything big or complex. Nona drew her dagger and stepped between the chairs. “Sera! Distract him!” The small bird leapt from Nona’s shoulder and fluttered over the monster’s head, pecking at its faceless nob (-1sub Monster). Nona slashed with her knife, but couldn’t land a hit on the monster.

“You have not heard the last of Volorog!” it cried, hammering at Alexis with its rubbery fist. She blocked the blow on her shield, the monster’s strength quickly leaving its body. It looked exhausted, and now terribly wounded. ‘Volorog’ turned to the door and tried to hop past Zwei, but its coordination was even worse than it expected. It clumsily stumbled into Zwei, earning it a finishing slice (-7snkdmg Volorog Dying) that dropped it to the ground.

The creature lay bleeding for hardly a moment when a distant, feeble cry came from somewhere upstairs. “Hello? Is anybody there? Is he gone?”

“We only need a moment of your time, Mr. Proudstump.” She elbowed Fox discretely, silently requesting back-up from the socialite. “We're here about the goblin bounty, and common knowledge has it you are the best source for information concerning Brinestump. Besides,” Nona cast a speculative glance over Walthus' head into his house, “it can't be any messier than most wizards I've studied with.”

Walthus held the door for half a moment, looking at Nona blankly. “Oh, yes, ahaha, please come in.” He threw the door open, inviting the party in.

“I must ask you please not to touch anything. This way.” He led them into the dining room

"Is there anything you might be able to tell us as travelers going through the local area as well? Vague rumours one's ear catches in the city aren't always much help when on the trail after all."

The scruffy halfling seated them at the dining room table. “Travelers you say? I haven’t seen any lately in the swamp myself.” He started grabbing pots and throwing wood into the stove. “As for goblins, oh yes, those plotters. The Licktoad tribe. Nasty buggers. Their village is just to the southeast of here, in the middle of the swamp. Just take the old fish trail, can’t miss it.”

Walthus filled the pot with water from a barrel and put it on the stove to boil. “In fact, I suspect the little terrors are getting ready for an all-out attack!”

Fox got up from her chair. Something didn’t sit quite right with her. “You look rather tired. One thinks you could use a hand with preparing dinner.” Walthus paused and looked up from the cupboard he was rummaging in, slowly closing the door.

“There hasn't been a full offensive by the goblins in a while. Sure they have been a nuisance, but one suspects that something changed then. Are they supplied with more than fireworks?”

“Why don’t you go find out yourselves, now get out of my house!” Walthus raised his voice to a shout. Suddenly his entire body wrinkled, changing colour to mottled red-and-brown. His face melted away and vanished leaving nothing but a slit and a lashing tongue.

Fox smirked. She wasn’t sure what to expect, but this was an interesting response to an otherwise innocent question. She twisted her left wrist and a dagger appeared in her hand. ‘Walthus’ was too slow, he only had time to try to dodge her thrust. She jabbed him with the tip of her dagger (-1dmg Rubbery Monster).

The faceless rubbery monster stumbled back away from Fox. Its movements were stiff and awkward as it backed against the wall. In its natural form it was obviously injured and incapacitated.

It turned to Alexis and slammed her with its open claw, catching her still off-guard (-10dmg Alexis 1/11). Alexis reeled from the attack as it wrapped its claw around the back of her neck (Grappled). To complete the horror, its licking and lashing tongue punched a small hole in her side, sucking her blood (-1Con).

The goblin exterminators did not feel like getting lost chasing the half-seen phenomena of the swamp. They continued down the path for almost half an hour, crossing two more bridges like the first, but unoccupied. No further disturbances delayed their trip to the warden’s shack.

The muddy fish trail wound through the swamp, eventually coming to a swampy lagoon on the coast. Just beyond the shallow lagoon waters lay the open ocean of Sog’s Bay. A terrible wreck of an old, two-story building stood sagging on the east shore, walls soggy with moss and roof drooping with age. The warden’s shack.

The party approached the warden’s humble abode. Alexis knocked sharply on the aged door. After a brief pause there was movement from the shack, and the door opened, revealing a scruffy halfling. His gaze drifted up to Alexis’. “Oh, hullo. How can I help you? I’m afraid I can’t accept visitors today. My house is a bit of a mess, and so in no shape to entertain.”

After tempers flared and words were had, the voyage deeper into the dense, foggy swamp continued. As soon as the group was back on its way, the heavy atmosphere returned, muting and distorting all noise in the swamp.

A few minutes down the winding trail across the bridge, Zwei and Nona caught sight of something unsettling. A large, soggy three-toed foot print in the mud, about a foot wide and slowly filling with water. Whatever passed this way couldn’t have been far away.

“Look! Over there!” Nona pointed into the fog, somewhere off the trail.

The others followed her finger into the trees. They couldn’t see whatever it was Nona saw.

The snake did not respond positively to Alexis’ display of dominance. It refused to retreat, unintimidated by the warrior’s continued assault on its senses. It was beginning to look like they would have to fight through the snake or swim across the river.

Not pleased with the idea of getting wet, Nona took a third option. With her magic, she called forth the sound of a natural predator. Convinced by the illusory sound, the boa immediately changed its behaviour. Nona waited, prepared for if things escalated to an actual fight. She didn’t want to provoke unnecessary conflict with the swamp flora or fauna. Alexis felt the same about the situation. She hoped to scare the reptile into retreating and unblocking the bridge. She ran up to the foot if the bridge and shouted at the snake, bashing her shield to create a ruckus.

The boa braced itself, holding its ground on the bridge. It wasn’t backing off but wasn’t looking for a fight. She tensed to strike, opening its mouth wider though it didn’t turn hostile. Meanwhile Fox caught up with Alexis, making sure to stay behind her iron clad ally, so not to be in any real danger.

Alexis led the way into the swamp. As if stepping across a threshold, the party entered into the thick quiet of the swamp. The canopy blotted out the sunlight giving the swamp a spooky, oppressive atmosphere, and the muffled silence pressed in like a dense fog. Under the adventurers’ feet, the narrow New Fish Trail wound through the undergrowth and between trees.

Six minutes into the swamp, the party came across one of the many branches of the Soggy River that ran throughout Brinestump. The placid river curled slowly across the path on its way out to Sog’s Bay. The bridge that lay across the river was a soggy wooden affair covered in moss with a few missing planks.

Draped across the very middle of the bridge, right in the way of travelers hoping to cross, was a large boa constrictor. It lay motionless in a lazy coil, resting over the river crossing. There was no way to cross the bridge without coming dangerously close to the snake, should it prove hostile.

The group of goblin exterminators exited the Rusty Dragon and left town across the southern bridge onto the Lost Coast Road. Brinestump Marsh was about 2 miles to the southwest of Sandpoint, but the path followed along the winding coast, making the actual distance stretch to 3 miles. For a typical fisherman going to Brinestump, the trek only took about an hour. With the added load of a fully armed and armoured party especially those in heaver armour made the trip take an extra half hour to get to the New Fish Trail, the northernmost of the three main trails into the marsh.

While Brinestump Marsh was a relatively small region, only 2 miles across at its widest point, the swamp was fantastically overgrown with vegetation. Frequent stretches of muddy bogs and snaking waterways made moving through a tiring and frustrating procedure, and stepping off one of the three trails was a good way to get lost.

The southern edge of the swamp was bounded by a 40-foot cliff overlooking the area, granting an ideal vantage point to get a good view of the bog. The closest trail to Sandpoint, the New Fish Trail was the most traveled of the three, with local fishermen swearing by the fine fishing in the swamp. ‘Warden’ Walthus Proudstump’s shack lay on this trail.

The Old Fish Trail branched off from the Lost Coast Road 2 miles further south but has fallen in to disuse in recent decades. Finally the Witches Walk, descending into the swamp from the southern cliffs is rumoured by locals to lead directly to the home of Old Megus, the swamp witch

(We’re at the New Fish Trail, but the options are there.)

-Okron's Jade Regent Adventure Path-

15 Gozran
The Rusty Dragon
Sandpoint, Varisia

The Licktoad tribe of goblins, living in the murky depths of Brinestump Marsh to the southwest of Sandpoint, are normally too small in numbers and too cowardly to participate in the goblin tradition in raiding human settlements and caravans. Recent reports from travelers and merchants using the Lost Coast Road, however, show that the small tribe have become unusually aggressive. The reason for this uncharacteristic bravery seems clear—the goblins have somehow managed to arm themselves with what appears to be a considerable supply of fireworks.

While the added power of the fireworks has not made them much more effective, the inflated sense of might that comes with the handheld explosives has made them dangerously brave. Victims have reported that the horses’ panic at the sight and sound of the exploding rockets has caused almost as much destruction as the goblin attacks themselves. The problem has escalated from mere annoyance to threat with the last few attacks, including serious injuries to three unfortunate travelers.

The city of Magnimar to the south has been slow to send aid, since the problem is so local to Sandpoint. Unwilling to wait for things to escalate further to attract Magnimar’s attention, Sheriff Belor Hemlock has reinstated the old goblin bounty after several years of inactivity. Originally taken down because a group over eager but too-young adventurers where swept out to sea while in pursuit of goblin ears, the bounty awards 10 gold for relatively fresh ear delivered to town hall—with an additional 300 gold for the head of the Licktoads’ leader, Chief Gutwad.

However, besides the time upheaval a few years back, Sandpoint doesn’t take long for life to settle down once things return to normal, and the a majority of adventurers have gone elsewhere, leaving few to volunteers for goblin hunting. With few patrols to spare Sandpoint city watch can’t afford to send any into the dense swamp, though they have stepped up their presence along the Lost Coast Road itself.

The task falls to concerned locals eager to aid the town, and greedy mercenaries looking to make relatively easy coin. A few adventures have already made the attempt, but nothing has been heard of them in the three days since they entered Brinestump Marsh, and just last night, another round of colourful explosions burst over the wetlands south of Sandpoint.

Those townsfolk interested in sharing gossip or news about the events in Brinestump Marsh, as well as any adventurers thinking of heading into the swamp, have gathered at the Rusty Dragon, owned by local aristocrat, Ameiko Kaijitsu. The inn, with its ever-present “Help Wanted” board, is the best place in Sandpoint to find adventures or mercenaries looking for work. With last night’s fireworks there has been talk that the goblins are planning to attack Sandpoint itself, and the tavern has been busy with local chatter.

You have come to the Rusty Dragon to join a group of adventurers and to figure out your plan of attack for dealing with the Licktoad goblins. Whether you know each other or not yet, you’ve all seen each other around town and know of each other through acquaintances.

You also know that Brinestump Marsh may not be as large as the Mushfens farther to the south, the swamp is dense and tangled, and it’s easy to get lost in the place. If anyone knows their way around in the marsh, it’d be that old eccentric halfling, Walthus Proudstump, the self-appointed ‘warden’ of the swamp.

(This will be a meet and greet. Get to know each other before you head out to the swamp. While in town feel free to ask around for information about the marsh, or set out this afternoon. Brinestump March is about 1 hour away from Sandpoint to the northern edge of the swamp, and it’s about two miles across.)
