Subject: Fight on!

Bailox's entire body hurt, but the pain was a distant thing, in the back of his mind, walled off behind the rage of battle that burned through his veins like molten lava. As he stared into the soulless eyes of the beast before him, he cried out to Atlam.

Give me the strength to end this beast! If it is your will that I die today, at least grant me the satisfaction of taking it with me!

Without a thought of retreat or surrender, Bailox gave a mighty roar and pressed forward.

Couldn't agree more, Tek. The way you're doing it works just fine for me. Great update!

Ok, so as for where we go from here, there's no way Bailox would run from a fight. So, if anyone with healing spells might be able to give Bailox a Band-Aid, it would be much appreciated. Bailox is the sort that will fight to the death, if it comes to that, but I'd rather not have to roll up a new character-hehe.

I will toss up a post that won't add anything new, just the combat from Bailox's point of view. So when next you update, Tek, just continue Bailox's fight, unless the gnoll runs away or something, and any support from companions will be awesome.

Bailox nodded in approval as the plan came together. Now came the part that suited his warrior's heart the best: once the plan was made and the strategy known, he was free to give in to the call of the battleblood and surrender himself to battle.

His next few minutes' work was clear in his head. He selected a vantage point with a clear line of fire to the enemy. He jammed a few arrows point-first into the ground for ease of access when the fight began. He quickly strung his long bow and tested its pull: sweet and as familiar as a lover's caress. He pulled his swords loose from their scabbards for ease of drawing. He made sure his shield was stout and free of defect. He made sure his hunting knife was within easy reach in case the fighting got extremely close-range. And then...he let the righteous rage take him. As with most of the Highland warriors of Haervath, he had learned to channel it, to let it hone his senses to a keen edge. With the white-hot fire burning through his every fiber, he took position with a glare at the enemy force that could have almost killed them as surely as any arrow.

He held rock-still in position, bow drawn and ready to fire, as his companions finalized their own actions.

I am Bailox Steelbringer, warrior of Haervath. I am deliverer of justice. I am Death incarnate.

I am the bringer of your end.

Tek, you are correct; Bailox will drop each weapon to grab the next as needed. Will pick em back up when we loot after combat.

EDIT: Have thrown together one final post for Bailox before combat begins. Didn't specify a target due to initiative rolls. Just make Bailox's target the best target of opportunity when his turn in the initiative order comes up.

Topic: A Single Stone... Q/A
Subject: Planning

Agreed; might as well make our plan here in the Q/A.

I fully agree about getting the captives out; Silence would be excellent to do this while someone creates a distraction to keep their eyes off the captives too. But we should definitely get them out before combat starts; I imagine they'd be used as human shields or for bargaining at swordpoint if the enemy has time to react.

Ideas on said distraction, anyone?

Once we hammer out that part, when we're ready to attack, my intention is to rain some death with a few arrows, then draw the long sword and enter melee range. When the melee gets up close and personal, I'll switch to short sword and shield. Good ol' hunting knife if it gets any closer up than that. As for contingencies, if anyone starts getting hammered too hard, I will make every effort to switch to their target to give them breathing room. I'm doing basic tanking here; switching to the aid of anyone who starts getting pounded too badly. Any buffs and heals that can be provided will be appreciated.

So, weapon progresion at a glance: Longbow-->Long sword-->Short sword + shield-->Hunting knife

That's the meat of my strategy for Bailox. Any refinements or suggestions are welcome. Let's do this. Rawr.

Subject: At last

Bailox awakened instantly as the little chipmunk scampered across him on its way to Ja'aron. Whilst the hangover had not departed, the short nap was refreshing, and lessened the pounding of his head a bit.

As it only took the small furry one a few minutes to return, their quarry was obviously not far; so, as Ja'aron relayed what Mae had seen, Bailox was swiftly rerolling his bedroll, tying it back to his pack, and reslinging the backpack and his weapons with practiced movements. By the time Ja'aron's report was delivered, Bailox was ready to move out and primed for battle.

As they prepared to move out, Bailox gripped the blade of his short sword tightly, until a dripping line of blood had been drawn across his palm. He held the bleeding palm to his heart and silently said the prayer he had always offered to Atlam before battle. Mighty Atlam, by my blood, I ask you to grant us the courage to face the battle ahead, the strength to overcome our foes, the wisdom to acquit ourselves with honor, and the power to destroy the dishonorable.

He slid his shord sword back into its scabbard on his waist and looked at his companions. "In moments, we face battle. In moments, we will kill. For if we do not, death surely awaits. The enemy's steel does not care about your moral stance. Blood must be shed. But I will say this: if your morals should not allow you to take a life, be certain that your chosen tactics stop your foe. For they shall obviously have no issue with ending us. And if you are indeed able to subdue any of our foes that they may provide us with answers, so much the better. We must secure the lass's daughter, and we must stop these brigands from ever doing this to anyone else."

His voice became grave. "No battle is certain. We may fall. But if we are to meet our end, then by Atlam, make these bastards pay dearly for our lives."

He stood straighter and drew in a huge breath of the clean air, readying himself for the coming battle. "I stand ready when you are, companions."

Bailox chuckled as the small rodent ran into the distance. From what he knew of druids, he had no trouble accepting that the small one could commune with Ja'aron in its own way, providing the party with much-needed information if it returned intact. He almost managed not to chuckle again as he silently asked mighty Atlam to look after a chipmunk. His anger momentarily and refreshingly vanished as he watched Ja'aron struggle with the hard bread in his mouth. He laughed even harder when Ja'aron explained Mae's recent...activities.

"Ah, friend Ja'aron," he said between bouts of laughing, "what you and your friend do behind closed doors is entirely your own affair."

With a few final chuckles, Bailox deftly removed his bedroll from his backpack and spread it on a relatively soft patch of ground. He removed the pack and his weapons and laid them nearby, taking special care that the weapons were within easy and instant reach of his hands and situated for ease of reloading if they had to move out quickly. He took a long swig from his waterskin and quickly ate a small handful of rations. He then lowered himself to the ground and stretched out upon his bedroll.

"The brigands have a bit of a lead on us; it will take Ja'aron's short friend some time to return, and I am weary," he explained to his companions. "Worry not; if trouble comes, I will awaken as quickly as I am about to fall aslumber." And with that, he closed his eyes, knowing he needed at least a small amount of rest, and that a warrior on the march catches his naps as he can. Within seconds, the weary warrior was asleep.

(OOC: If ugliness comes while Bailox is sleeping, do be good chaps and not let it eat him-heh.)

Bailox nodded in approval at the Duskarn cleric's enthusiasm. Such a taste for battle would indeed be needed when the enemy was found; the brigands obviously had a penchant for violence.

He shifted to a more comfortable position upon the boulder. "Methinks we need a way to scout the enemy without dividing our numbers, so that we may engage them in force when the time comes. And time is of the essence. A quicker option would be to summon a means to cloak our entire party's presence. I speak these ideas only because I have seen diviners and mystics perform just such feats."

Again, he looked at his companions with a questioning eye. "Does anyone here possess such talents, or talents of a nature to give us the advantage? Atlam knows that I am a warrior of honor, but I've no qualms about using whatever advantage I can gain when confronting honorless dogs such as these. They do not deserve such honor or consideration. Or do we simply follow their path, and engage in battle as necessary?"

Does anyone have any sort of spell or ability that is the equivalent of remote viewing? That would be perfect if we want to scout the situation, now that we have a direction to look in.

Subject: Bailox's Input

Bailox felt the battleblood roar within his veins as he bellowed his readiness to hunt the fiends.

However, having the advantage of being a somewhat intelligent barbarian warrior, he realized that just charging pell-mell into the midst of the fleeing brigands could invite disaster.

He turned to the others. "Hear me, companions. We know the direction they went. We are still not sure of their numbers, or if they flee to a camp or base of some wise, wherein may lie more of them in wait."

He gazed at them all in turn. "I will help in making whatever plan of attack we can agree upon. Myself, I have considerable tracking skills. There may be one of you with greater skill in regard to shadowing prey with stealth. Whomever it may be, my suggestion is that said person scout ahead and gather a more complete understanding of what we face when we catch up to them. It is no slight or shame to know one's foe before engaging them in battle."

Bailox spied a fair-sized boulder and sat down upon it, still weary from the previous night's merrymaking and lack of sleep. "So let us reason together...before we shed blood together."

He eyed each companion in turn and awaited their contributions to their next course of action.

Hey all, got the results of Bailox's tracking checks from Tek and have posted accordingly.

Salvator and Hammer, you guys feel free to add whatever reactions you wish to the parts where Desrik and Adelror are involved. See the OOC bits of the post for what I mean.

Tried not to step on anyone's toes; brought Desrik along on the hunt so that Bailox would have backup. Hope that's ok, Sal.

Subject: Finding the trail

With the others keeping a weather eye on Ellice, Bailox began to truly scan the ground with a hunter’s eyes.

To the east, just off the roadway, he made out ruts leading away from the largest spray of blood; ruts that were unmistakably unique: the marks of a body being dragged across the ground. Motioning Desrik to come with him, he called to the others, “Stay here, stay together, and keep watch in all directions. Keep your weapons at the ready. We shall not go far, and we shall return shortly. Call out if there is trouble.” He turned to Desrik. “Keep your blade ready, my friend”, he said quietly. “I see the marks of one of the bodies being dragged away. A man’s weight is too great to drag like thus for overly long; we will find the body shortly. Be ready for whatever we may find with it.”

He loosened his own short sword in its scabbard and made sure it was ready to be drawn quickly. The mighty warrior and his mercenary companion followed the distinctive drag marks for perhaps a hundred paces off the road, and there it was. In a shallow ditch, they came upon the slashed and bloodied corpse of another Syln, black of hair and sporting the stubbly beard growth of a few days. His throat and chest bore the brunt of the horrible wounds. The brigands had relieved the poor soul of all his belongings, even his clothing. The naked corpse laid there as a testament to the violence and carnage wreaked upon it. “Filthy bastards!” Bailox grated.

As he scanned further, he noticed that multiple sets of footprints led on eastward toward a prominent hill among others in the distance. “The dogs fled that way,” he rumbled to Desrik, pointing. “Before we return to the others, let us bury him quickly, so that the lass does not see her friend thus. Let her instead remember him as he was in life.”

Looking around and seeing no signs of an impending ambush, Bailox and Desrik dug a shallow grave and in short order had laid the unfortunate man to rest in the ground. Saying a silent prayer to Atlam, Bailox and his companion returned to the rest of the party. He went to Ellice and looked her in her haunted eyes. “Lass, we found one of your companions. He has passed beyond this life to the halls of the gods. Black of hair, a short growth of whiskers. Desrik and I have buried him and given him what peace we could.”

(OOC: allowance here for her reaction and identifying which of her companions it is when you post again, Tek.)

Bailox softly laid a hand on her shoulder. “I am truly sorry for your loss. But beyond where he lies, I have also found the direction in which these brigands fled.” He then looked around at all of his companions in turn and spoke more loudly. “Our quarry went in that direction,” he said gravely, pointing toward the hill where the footprints led. “I stand ready to hunt! What say you?!” he roared as he glared into the distance in the direction of his enemies.

A determined and fearful glint came to his eyes as he stood fast, waiting for his companions to make their own contributions to the impending course of action.

(OOC: Salvator, feel free to add to this and post appropriate reactions and replies for Desrik as you see fit. Also, Hammer, I am just guessing that Adelror might honor the grave as he sees fit in your next post. Didn't want to assume anything, though, so it's all yours if you want to.)

Bailox's anger upon taking in the scene wound his powerfully built body tight, like a coiled spring. With his extensive tracking knowledge and intimacy with the arts of war and weaponry, the scene of carnage and distress almost replayed itself before his eyes as he took in the marks on the ground, the sprays of blood, the imprints of the fallen bodies.

Bodies...where were the bodies? Why would the brigands take the bodies? Were they moved off the road? Hidden nearby so as not to attract attention? Taken as macabre trophies?

(OOC: I'd like to use Tracking to: 1) see if there's any evidence of the bodies being dragged away somewhere nearby, and 2) determine what direction the kidnappers took away from the scene.)

"Patience," Bailox counseled Elberon quietly. "The lass has been through much, and is understandably vexed. She is the only one who can lead us to the beginning of these brigands' trail. We needs must give her the time she needs to compose herself, else tracking the motherless dogs shall be that much more difficult."

"Worry not, my friend," he said, placing a calming hand on Elberon's shoulder. "No man has been born that I cannot track. We will find them, ere the lass leads us to the point of assault."

He again looked down at Ellice as the Duskarn cleric leaned closed to her offering his promise of aid. Bailox gripped the hilt of his short sword at his waist tightly, and admitted to himself that he, too, was anxious to begin this quest for justice.

Nice posts, Hammer and Salvator.

Hammer, glad you've had experience with clerics. Wasn't sure what you were unclear on, that's why I posted. No offense intended. As with any advice I might ever spew forth, feel free to use it or discard it at your leisure. During the various campaigns in which I was a cleric, it was always the same DM, and he gave me leave to choose any of the spells available in the pertinent spheres of influence.

Different strokes for different folks-hehe. Loving the RP so far; everyone is doing such an awesome job. I feel unworthy.

My posting may be spotty this week; got a potential employer flying me to Washington state to interview for a spot as a senior machinist building spacecraft. I'm excited! Keep your fingers and toes crossed for me.

Topic: A Single Stone... Q/A
Subject: Clarification

Hammer, my apologies; the table I was looking at earlier was the number of bonus spells you gain at each level, not the total number of spells you know. Sorry for the incorrect numbers.

Having played a cleric, I will toss my two cents in to try to help clarify. Cleric spells are divided into spheres of influence, with certain spells associated with each sphere. The spheres associated with your deity are usually determined by the DM.

You are able to use any of the spells associated with your sphere(s); you don't have to choose only a certain few to know.

You "prime" your spells by choosing the ones you want to use during a particular period (say for instance for that day) according to the max number you can know, and you pray to your deity. The deity then grants you the knowledge of those selected spells, and they are then "primed" and ready for casting when you need them. After you use them (or don't), you are then free to select other spells, if you wish, the next day. You have access to any spells within your deity's sphere(s) of influence; you just have to adhere to the number of spells you can know at a given time. So if your deity has 10 1st-level spells in its sphere(s) and 10 2nd-level spells, you can select any of them you wish to use that day, as long as you pray to your deity to have it put the knowledge of that spell in your head for that day's use.

In my opinion, this gives a cleric greater magical flexibility than a wizard, as you're not locked into knowing only certain spells that you've memorized. Your deity gives you temporary memorization of a spell, and it can give you memorization of totally different spells tomorrow.

Again, just my two cents' worth. Humbly submitted in hopes it may help you. Apologies if my rambling confused you further-hehe.

Hammer, just looked in the PH; it says with WIS of 16, you get a bonus 2nd level spell. Also, Clerics with WIS of 16 or higher get +10% XP.

So as I read it, at Lvl 2 you have a total of 2 1st level spells and a bonus 2nd level spell, plus your Turn Undead ability.

Hope this helps.
