Topic: Pharaoh
Subject: Artemis's Action(s)

Artemis listened to his companions' discussion and was satisfied that they were reaching logical conclusions and that they might actually survive this ordeal, provided they continued working well together and coming up with good ideas.

As he bedded down to wait for the night, Artemis pondered the events that led them to this point, and mentally pored over Webb's report of the pyramid and the scatterings of civilization that lie between here and there. It did indeed seem that their options are limited at this point, and Artemis had a feeling that the pyramid was going to play a pivotal role in what was to come.

As they struck the camp and prepared to move out that night, Artemis was pleased to hear Davian basically echo his own sentiments.

β€œI think it is clear that we have little choice in direction,” Davian said, β€œit seems these ruins that Webb has spotted will offer shelter and the pyramid in the distance is closer than anything else. Maybe we can find people there that might tell us where we are, though unlikely.”

"Well said, Davian," said Artemis. "I can't help but feel that there is a purpose in our going to that pyramid; even from here I can feel that it has significance for us."

No sooner had the words left his mouth than the ground started to shake, and suddenly a hideous creature reared up before them. Its gaping maw reeked of death and ancient malice, and the wicked stinger that caught the gleam of moonlight promised great unpleasantness should it connect with flesh.

Noticing that the hideous mouth seemed to be hungry and looking for a nice fat meal, Artemis grinned roguishly and decided to give it one.

Calling upon the arcane powers at his disposal, Artemis conjured a Fireball spell and sent it hurtling toward the inviting target of the creature's open mouth, setting the fireball to detonate once it is inside the beast's mouth.

((OOC: Al, should the Fireball spell or its results go awry, I will touch Gammius and cast Strength upon him before he gets out of touch range, at which point I will fall back and ready up for next round.))

Subject: When Nerds Attack

Zombies are real, zombies are real, zombies are real...

That insane litany kept repeating itself over and over and over in Roger's head as he stood frozen in shock watching the fight start to unfold before him. Fear, incredulity, and a feeling of surreal panic kept his feet rooted to the spot and his finger frozen on the "Capture" button of his camera-phone; his mind partially registered the repeated beeps as the phone kept taking pictures, and each beep seemed to be in time with the voice in his head: zombies are real, zombies are real, zombies are real...

The reality of the situation couldn't be denied: the big man in the biker jacket was definitely landing authentic hammer punches on the dude (zombie), but they were having no effect. And the dude (zombie) was definitely trying to eat the big guy's face. All the zombie movies Roger had seen, all the zombie video games he'd played, all the zombie comic books he'd read...all of them rushed through his head as though for comparison. He saw a chaotic maelstrom of shambling zombies, leaping ninja zombies, goofy comedy zombies, hardcore unstoppable death-machine zombies...zombies are real, zombies are REAL, ZOMBIES ARE REAL!!

He was jolted from his imitation of a terrified statue by that last scream of the litany in his head and by the voice of the big guy.

"Oi! Git over here. Check the bike...in the saddlebags you'll find something to get this f*cker off me."

Roger's feet still wouldn't cooperate as he jammed the camera-phone into his pocket and started to shamble toward the guy's bike, which was still laying on its side next to the PT Cruiser. Surreal and fantastic horror started to settle into all-too-real horror as he stumbled closer to where the actual fight was taking place, seeing the hideous zombie (they're real!) trying to eat the big guy.

"HURRY!" the big guy yelled, finally snapping Roger out of it and bringing the moment into painful clarity as he stubbed his toe on the bike's back tire.

He reached for the saddlebag that was exposed, frantically hoping that whatever he was looking for wasn't in the other saddlebag that was pinned to the ground. Fumbling the buckle open, he reached into the bag and started rifling through its contents. It took only a moment to find the pistol, and as Roger gripped its handle a sudden feeling of confidence rushed through him. The memory of all the first-person shooter zombie games he had mastered came back, and in a great show of dexterity he managed to pop the clip out, verify that it was full, pop it back in and cock the slide, all without peeing himself or dropping anything.

Swinging back around to the fight, Roger swung the gun wildly in that direction, then tried to picture himself about to impress all of nerd-dom owning a zombie shooter game, settling the gun into a direct aim at the thing's head.

With a wild and hysterical scream, Roger started emptying the clip at the zombie's head. It was harder to tell which was louder: the gunshots, or Roger's scream that echoed every report: "ZOMBIES ARE REAL! ZOMBIES ARE REAL! ZOMBIES ARE REAL!"

I think I am going to have to go ahead and sit this game out. Getting prepped for school is taking up a lot more time than I thought it would, and coupled with some rl situations, I just don't think I'm going to be able to give this game the attention it deserves.

Skari, if you need a convenient npc feel free to use my character as such. Sorry to bail on you like this, but rl rears its ugly head.

Good gaming to you all!

OK, Val, so does that mean I don't post 'til after the combat is over? Or do I go ahead and go for the saddlebag? Am a little confused as to my next actions by your last post to Grugg.

I'll try to get my first post up this weekend; been having to jump thru a lot of hoops to get my scholarship squared away so I can go back to school next month.

But all came thru ok with it, so after 16 or so years away from school, I'm finally getting to go back-hehe.

I'm sorry too; been jumping thru hoops trying to get my scholarship squared away so I can go back to school next month. I'll get a post up this weekend.

Good news is, everything came thru with my scholarship, so I'll be taking my olde butt back to school after 16 or so years away-hehe.

No problem. Sorry I've been away the past couple days, been having to jump thru hoops to get my scholarship squared away to go back to school next month.

The good news is, it all came thru and I'll be carrying my olde butt back to school after, um, 16 yrs. or so away hehe.

EDIT: Have now read up on things and am current. I know what I want to do, but I'll wait for your question, Grugg, before I continue; will get a post up as soon as we have a meeting of the minds-hehe.

Hey Grugg, is your character carrying a piece? Maybe tucked in waistband or anything? Or any other obvious weapon that Roger might see when your jacket was open?

Got an idea for how I want to proceed in my next post, but whether or not you have a visible weapon on ya will determine how I do it.

Hehe, Utan...rest assured Artemis was only addressing those who had spoken thus far; he is a proper gentleman, and would never leave a lady out of any speaking he did.

No slicing off his dangling participle while he sleeps!

Would have to change his name to Bobbittus.

Subject: Artemis Gordeen

Artemis awoke with the bleary certainty that a camel was standing on his head. Another moment assured him that the camel had left some droppings in his mouth before taking up guard position atop his cranium. He took a moment to puzzle over how he had so grossly offended this camel as he tried to take in his surroundings. He saw the blurry forms of people all around him, and he briefly wondered why no one was removing the camel. How rude.

The rasp of the crossbows quickly dispatched the head-camel and brought everything into painful focus. Artemis' jaw dropped open as he heard the soldier utter the charges against them. What balderdash was this?! However, upon trying to recall the events of the party and afterward, Artemis found that his memories were indeed quite muddled. And he did seem to remember speaking to someone in the Sultan's court about which of those fine camels would be the fastest in a race...

Artemis glared daggers at the soldier as he continued to read that damnable scroll, both in anger at these obviously false and trumped-up charges and in pain at the phantom camel that kept coming back to dance upon his head. And what was that deathly taste in his mouth? He was trying to think through the pain and figure out whether these dogs would shoot them in the back as they wandered away to die in the desert, when the soldier finished reading and bent down as though to tie his boots, whispering the words that might very well save their lives. Artemis gave a barely perceptible nod of thanks to the soldier and shooshed away the head-camel, as it was now time to do some serious thinking.

Artemis stretched his tall and lanky frame, went to the pile of belongings and began to gather. He tossed aside the torn and useless party finery and slipped on his brown, sturdily embroidered magician's traveling robes. He shook the sand from his leather riding boots and slid them on. He strapped his wide leather belt around his waist, and after checking his large pouch to make sure all of his spell components were intact, tied it onto the belt, followed by his waterskin. He also slid his Wand of Magic Missiles into his belt, earning a nervous shuffling of the soldiers' weapons as he did so. He slid on his bracers, the only piece of armor he carried, and felt their power as he tied them up, enjoying the feeling of protection, as though an invisible suit of armor was settling onto him. He found a piece of rawhide and tied his long and unruly brown hair into a ponytail, and brushed the sand out of his equally unruly beard as best he could. He donned his simple magician's hat, and as an afterthought, grabbed up the finery he had tossed aside and tied it about his face and neck, Bedouin style, for protection from the fierce glare of the sun, leaving only his piercing brown eyes showing. He found his precious dagger and slid it into his boot. He then shouldered his backpack, slid his quarterstaff into the straps, and picked up his Staff of Striking to use as a walking stick on this damnable trek to the "oasis".

When everyone had geared up, Artemis joined them as they set out. During the walk he cast a Mount spell, conjuring a large magical steed and letting everyone in turn take a few minutes riding, knowing that if everyone else felt half as bad as he did that it would be at least a brief welcome respite from the trudging.

Upon reaching the "oasis", such as it was, Artemis left the scavenging to the others and cast a Detect Magic spell on the area that the mounts and corpses occupied, just to see if any nasty surprises were waiting.

((OOC: Al, just advise of any possible findings when ya post))

Artemis dismissed the magic mount and found himself an acceptable flesh-and-blood steed, and as he got it geared up and ready for travel, he listened to Davian and Webster hold forth on what they thought the plan should be. Are they mad? he thought, The Sultan's men outnumber us fifty to one!

"Gentlemen," Artemis said, "if I may interject. I fully agree that we need to find out who is behind this and why. But I feel bound to point out the obvious: we have been promised death if we return, and the Sultan's forces greatly outnumber us, which leaves them in a position eminently capable of fulfilling that promise. As we now have gear and provisions, might it not behoove us to explore the area and see what we might find that would be of use to us in this endeavor?"

I know it's not part of this game's thread, but this looked like a good place to reiterate that I am looking to start a new Trek game, possibly a "spinoff" of this one.

I had made a topic about it, but only got one response. Odd, considering how many were involved with this one; I would think more folks would have been interested.

I shall briefly revive my recruitment post for it; hopefully there will be some takers.

Roger was fuming over the general suckiness of the convention and pondering the exact wording of his nasty e-mail to the Valve people when his reverie was rudely interrupted by the sound of the crash. What now? he thought grumpily as he skidded his mountain bike to a stop. Taking in the scene briefly, he had the morbidly pleasing thought that this might be a chance to see some real-life blood and gore; hell, if nothing else it'd be a little research for getting the blood right for his masterpiece.

He'd seen so many zombie gore-fest movies, and he knew he could do it better than even ol' Romero himself; with the right research and the successful completion of his filmmaking studies, along with his skills as a Jedi Master on the computer, he was determined that he would finally be recognized for what he could do, and he would blow Hollywood up with the greatest zombie film it had ever seen! Besides, hacking banks and private bank accounts for chump change couldn't pay the bills forever.

He readjusted his backpack and lovingly leaned the Cadillac All-Mountain Series AM2.7, purchased online just last month through another genius hack, against a tree at the edge of the parking lot and trotted toward the two men.

The big man in the biker jacket was just rising to his feet as Roger jogged up. "Are you guys okay?" he yelled, and then skidded to a stop when he looked over at the other guy and got a better view of him. The dude was pasty white, with a blank gaze, and there was something odd about the way he was trying to get up...

Damn! Roger thought as he quickly recognized the movements from the plethora of films he'd seen: This guy is doing a zombie routine!

"I'm soooo sorry, guys!" he said as he looked around for the camera. "I so didn't mean to mess up the shot!" He cringed as he prepared to be yelled at by an irate director, but at the same time was thinking Well how was I supposed to know anybody was filming here? And if these guys are doing a zombie movie, how come I don't remember seeing them at the convention? Talk about stupid, passing up free publicity for their project like that. "So are you guys doing a project for the college or something?"

He kept looking for the camera setup as he spoke, but it looked like it must be pretty well concealed; he wasn't spotting it. He reached for his camera-phone as he said "Just lemme get a quick pic or two and I'll get out of your hair. This is so cool! I'm a HUGE zombie movie fan..."
