Yeah Astrid, didn't want to step on your interlude, but things are reaching a point in the cargo bay that Thorson is likely to call for all hands on deck soon. Trying to progress it logically; once Thorson has an idea of how to proceed, then it'll be time to get help with the proceeding.

But feel free to continue your extracurricular activities. I'll make sure Thorson calls when things are at their most intimate. Hehehehe.

Also, I wanted to make sure no one thinks I'm stepping on their toes with the report from the cargo bay. Thorson is reporting merely on the engineering-related aspects. If Science, Tactical, etc. wants to join in and report other findings at the handoff I left, feel free. Everyone's working from outside the ship's containment field at this point, so if we want to say that anyone else from other departments is also in the cargo bay observing and conducting tests and scans, that's imminently doable.

Subject: Some minor frustration

Stardate 2365.02.07
USS Peregrine, Cargo Bay One - 0925

KLAAAAAANG!!

The spanner narrowly missed Toporov as it ricocheted off the wall. Eric had the presence of mind to yell "Sorry!" to the startled Engineering crewman before he began an extended session of cursing that would have made his Viking ancestors most appreciative. It wasn't so much frustration as it was an impending sense of the passage of time that had made Eric snatch up the spanner and throw it. Hard. Would've been a definite trip to Sickbay for Toporov, his hard Russian skull notwithstanding. Eric made a mental note to get Toporov suitably drunk by way of further apology when they next took holosuite time together and visited the great Viking mead hall built by Eric's own family over a thousand years ago.

There was nothing in the Federation's records about the technology of these Hekarans. There was precious little about the race itself. Apparently the Hekarans were a very insular people. Eric would have given his cybernetic arm at that moment for a single blueprint of any piece of Hekaran technology. He and the Engineering team were going to have to suss out a completely alien technology, then troubleshoot that technology from the ground up to find the cause of the canisters' failing containment, and then they had to effect repairs, assuming they even had the technology to do so, without letting loose the microscopic cyborgs in the canisters. Given the fact that the (cyborganisms?) were under such strong containment in the first place, Eric had the feeling that bad things were wont to happen if that containment were broken and the lifeforms released. And they had eight hours to get it all done. Taken all together, the situation was enough to make any self-respecting engineer throw a tool.

Granted, they had made some progress. Through the data gathered so far, Eric had been able to piece together a basic picture of how the Hekarans approached circuit structures, power distribution and the like, but at this point it was like trying to describe an elephant to someone when you could only see its trunk. They had a ridiculously small, and ever-decreasing, amount of time to move way beyond these basics and get to the actual reconstruction of the damaged components, determining how they worked together, figuring out how to distribute energy through them, and reestablishing containment without doing something silly, like exploding.

Eric began studying another set of fresh data. Seconds later, the computer piped up with the reminder he had asked for. =/= The time is 0925 hours. Staff briefing in five minutes. =/= "Acknowledged," said Eric. He had already asked the captain if he could attend the briefing via videoconference, given the current time constraints. He took a moment to drink a glass of ice-cold water, smooth the wrinkles from his tunic, and activated a conference link to the captain's mess.

Eric listened and paid attention as Captain Drake outlined their orders for the escort mission. Having survived his fair share of combat, Eric fully agreed with Drake's prudence in preparing for the worst, especially when words like "routine" were used. The captain then started going around the table, issuing orders to the respective departments. In due course, Drake's gaze lifted across the table to the small personal comm screen on the wall to look at Eric. =/= Likewise, Commander, I want your people ready, just in case the talking turns into shooting. Also, I noticed that our total power output numbers were about three percent lower than we've been running - is that something that can be addressed? =/=

Eric wasn't all that surprised; he was actually starting to believe that Drake really did have eyes everywhere on the Peregrine. At that moment, though, Eric offered an earnest prayer to Thor - that he immediately send his largest thunderbolt up the arse of one Master Chief Petty Officer Clarence Davis. "Yes, sir," Eric replied after a masterful recovery, "and it already has been. We took one of the plasma flow regulators offline temporarily for, ah, routine maintenance last night, and that dropped the output. We're back to a hundred and five percent efficiency on all the power systems. I can make that a hundred and ten if things get hairy."

Drake nodded and then continued around the table with orders. Eventually he asked the million-gold-piece question: =/= Very well. Now then... who wants to get me up to speed on this escape pod? =/=

As Eric was right next to the thing, eyes of the briefing attendees (those whose backs weren't to it) drifted toward Eric on the small screen.

"Well, Captain, from an engineering standpoint, we're starting from scratch. These Hekarans are apparently pretty insular; there is nothing in Federation records regarding their technology. For only a couple of hours, though, we've made decent progress. We have a basic handle on the foundations of the technology. We still have to get through identifying what everything does and making sure we can recreate all of the technological functions, and then we have to effect repairs to the canisters' containment. While we've confirmed that the lifeforms are indeed cybernetic, that's about all we've confirmed. I can't tell you if they're dangerous yet, but there has to be a reason they're under containment. On the bright side, we haven't found anything outside of our own capabilities yet, so once we've gotten the research done, I'm fairly confident that we can shore up the canisters. We still have a lot of work to do, though, so with your permission, I'll get back to it and let someone else chime in."

((OOC: assuming Drake's permission to do so))

"Thank you, sir. Thorson out."

With a quick prayer to Mother Frigg for patience and wisdom, a quick glance to make sure no tools were within grabbing-and-throwing range, and another quick prayer to Thor for some expedience on that thunderbolt/Clarence-arse situation, Eric bent back to the task.

Ready to move along to the briefing at any time. Thorson would be busy with scans and study right up until he had to pull himself away to attend the briefing, so that pretty much has the pod covered. Science can do further scanning of their own after the briefing, during the run to the starbase. And of course Thorson will have to figure out how to get the canisters' containment restored during the trip so that we're able to drop the ship's containment field when it's time to offload the pod at the starbase.

EDIT/UPDATE: Thinking about how urgent it would be for Engineering to have to figure out how to restore full containment to the canisters within eight hours, I'm saying Thorson will need to attend by videoconference; shouldn't even waste the minutes needed to walk to and from the briefing. So good to go at any time.

Post up. Pod is in its bed and we can go now. Everyone still feel free to RP non-mission-critical material, backposted and time-adjusted as you desire. I'm just trying to get us to a point where we can easily transition to the escort mission at any time. Probably won't be doing another post for Thorson until it's time for the department head briefing; he'd be scanning his butt off until then in an effort to get as complete a preliminary report as possible to El Capitan.

Stardate 2365.02.07
USS Peregrine, Cargo Bay One - 0755

Eric split his attention between the pod being slowly maneuvered toward the yawning entrance to the bay and the readouts from the waiting containment field, alert for any indication of instability in the field. Seeing none, he looked again at the pod nearing the outside of the bay's force field. He pondered the best way to keep the pod contained and quarantined once it was in, between the bay doors and the static containment field they'd set up and then strengthened with the field enhancers. Arriving at a decision, Eric tapped his combadge. "Thorson to Flight Control. I'm going to have to keep a mobile containment field around the pod after we get it into the bay, until it gets into the static field. I'm going to need to control the tractor beam from here so I can sync up the mobile field."

((OOC: Assuming agreement and directive to proceed from the bridge))

Eric configured the interface before him to a control panel for the tractor beam. =/= Local tractor beam control established, =/= said the computer. With a deft and sure touch, Eric switched from the external tractor beam to the bay's internal one as the pod reached the force field. "Computer, establish a localized and mobile Level Five containment field around the pod. And give me manual control of it." An elongated, capsule-shaped field of energy flared to life around the pod as Eric used one hand to guide the tractor beam and the other to control the containment field around it. The mysterious pod floated gently through the air as it was maneuvered toward the larger box of the static containment field. The globe of containment energy around the pod merged seamlessly into the purple, glowing energy that made up the walls of the static field. With a final adjustment, Eric guided the pod to a soft landing on the floor of the cargo bay, onto an antigrav torpedo dolly that had been hastily pressed into service. The dolly would keep the pod cushioned and secure in the event of any unsightly jostling.

Puffing out a quick breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding, Eric took a step back from the panel and tapped his combadge again. "Thorson to Bridge. Pod is secure, containment field is stable; we can be on our way when you're ready. I'll start looking things over down here and will have a preliminary report ready for the 0930 briefing."

((OOC: Assuming acknowledgement))

Eric stared at the strange pod resting within the containment field for a moment. Something was giving him a vague sense of unease. It was an instinct that his grandfather had told him came from his Viking ancestors, and from the gods; an instinct that had saved the life of many a brave Viking warrior in ages past. He had learned not to ignore it.

But at the same time, his fascination was still boundless. The level of cybernetics he had seen within the strange lifeforms was beyond what Eric thought was even possible. He kept up with the Starfleet technical journals, and had read a paper by Wesley Crusher, son of Jack Crusher, a fondly-remembered but passed-on crewmate from the Stargazer. The paper was about nanites, highly sophisticated microscopic worker machines created by young Wesley himself aboard the Enterprise. Eric had been thoroughly impressed by the technology. Jack would have been proud of his son's outstanding work. These lifeforms, however, were a whole different animal. In just the preliminary scanning done so far, Eric could see that this level of seamless integration of organism and machine was light-years beyond young Crusher's nanites.

I will have your secrets, he silently told the pod.

Eric continued his relentless scanning and probing until it was time to head for the 0930 department heads' briefing, trying to squeeze as much information as he could out of it and to get a firmer handle on its technology; technology he would have to become familiar with if he was to repair the containment systems for the pod's canisters and their baffling microscopic contents. He really had no choice on that count; the Peregrine couldn't drop its containment field, thus getting the pod off the ship, until he could guarantee that those canisters wouldn't be releasing anything harmful.

There's engineering to be done! he thought with a wry grin as he bent to study the data more closely.

Subject: Engineering on the case

Stardate 2365.02.07
USS Peregrine, Engineering - 0740

Eric's eyes darted around the status table and surrounding displays as information poured in from the bridge. Two displays were temporarily clones of their Science-station counterparts on the bridge, and Eric studied the screens as preliminary data about the pod flowed in from the sensors. Another screen showed him a feed from the ship's external sensors and visual pickups and he pondered the mysterious pod's secrets as he watched it gently tumble in space. Other displays showed him ever-changing graphs and tables charting power distribution to the various systems and subsystems. Eric assimilated the flow of information in stride, trying to mesh the ephemeral bits into a coherent picture of understanding. Suddenly the captain's voice came over the comms.

=/= Drake to Engineering. Commander Thorson, we're about to bring an escape pod aboard. We are getting sensor readings that make no sense; I want an engineering team to Cargo Bay One to set up a containment field until we can be sure that it poses no threat, and we may need your assistance with the pod itself. =/=

"I'm seeing those readings as well, Captain. I'm taking a team down there myself. As soon as we have the containment field up and Science finishes their assessment, we'll try to fill in any gaps."

=/= Drake out =/=, came the somewhat terse-sounding acknowledgement.

Glancing around Engineering, Eric quickly made his choice. "Lieutenant Morgan, Petty Officer Toporov, you're with me. Grab a set of field enhancers. And bring your tricorders." Eric grabbed his toolkit, stuck a tricorder to his belt, and helpfully picked up two of the four field enhancers, meter-long metal rods that he slung onto a shoulder as he exited Engineering and headed for the turbolift.

Stardate 2365.02.07
USS Peregrine, Cargo Bay One - 0745

As Eric entered the cargo bay, diminutive redhead and massive Russian in tow, he saw that the large outer doors were already open. The mysterious pod hung motionless in the grip of the tractor beam, against a backdrop of naked space that still sent a thrill through Eric when he saw it. He sent a quick, silent prayer to Odin to keep the Norns, gremlins of the gods, out of the power systems for the cargo bay's forcefield, which were the only thing keeping out the cold and airless vacuum of space.

Directing Morgan and Toporov to the proper positions, Eric and the team set up a perimeter with the field enhancers, folding out their tripod legs and securing them in their proper place. After verifying their ready status with his tricorder, Eric called out "Computer, activate Level Five containment field." =/= Containment field activated =/= replied the computer as a large box-shaped field of energy, six meters on a side, flared briefly purple as it came online. Eric tapped his combadge. "Thorson to bridge; containment field is powered up and stable, whenever you're ready to bring it in."

Eric kept the com signal open, starting his own scans as he listened to the Science team on the bridge report their findings.

As he studied the scans, something caught his eye that made him stop and study it closer. He gasped in comprehension just as he heard over the bridge com, =/= One more thing, sir. I'm not entirely sure whatever is being held in the unit is entirely organic =/= from Tesenblen.

"It's not," said Eric in wonder. "Bridge, my scans are confirming, the lifeforms in the containers are microscopic. But they're also, completely cybernetic. A fusion of organic microscopic lifeforms seamlessly blended with metallic components. I'm picking up duranium, tritanium, transparent aluminum, bridge, the non-organic components I'm picking up could all conceivably come from any number of starships, but they're all integrated into cybernetics on a level I've never seen!"

Another reading flashed across his tricorder screen and he instantly became more alert.

"Lieutenant Tesenblen, I can confirm your readings that the containment for the lifeforms is failing. That's why our readings are sketchy; the containment keeps flickering, and it obscures the readings during those intervals that it's functioning. Our containment field should keep whatever it is from spreading beyond it until we can get it where it's going, but we'll have to shore up the field on the pod's containers themselves before we can drop our containment field again.

Our field is holding stable, bridge. You can bring it in when you're ready."
