Well, hey guys. Since I've finally managed to get back in the game, so to speak, I figured I'd venture into the freeform camp. Looking to join, maybe start up a fantasy freeform game. If you want me, holler. If you think you might want in, well, holler that too.

Well, hey everyone. Been a while. To make a short story not much longer than it was in the first place, my dear old girl of a laptop finally quit on me. Old Inspiron 1501. Served me well for a bunch of years, but she finally gave out, and with college, I hadn't the money to replace her.

So, here I am. Don't despise me too much?

Ark is glad to be rid of the macabre puppet and its unnerving stare, but the sight the group stumbles upon next chills him to the bone. Raz leaps from his scabbard at the sight of the old man, the same mist-thing that had sent them here. But at that moment, the young Bayrisian realized, he didn't know where 'here' even was. Had he been sent back to where they had started? Or was this a cleverly disguised mockery? Or was it some sort of strange otherworld, another plane they had stumbled upon without realizing? In his many readings, Ark had heard theories of such places, where things such as gravity, weight, time, and movement were but words, useless in an eldrich sea of ethereality, a place where the laws of nature simply didn't exist.

Or was it all simply a dream?

Ark reached for Anna's hand, clasping it tightly. "What to we do?" He asks to the others. A large part of him wanted to simply rush the old man and run him through, but another part told him that even breathing could get them all killed.

Hey, guys. For a long time, I've looked at Warhammer 40,000 from afar, and thought, 'Jeez, that looks like fun'. And I'm entirely addicted to the fluff. Well, with college coming up on me, it looks like I'm gonna have a massive influx of free time, so I thought it may be a good time to finally pick up 40k. If any of you play, I'd love if you could give me some beginners tips, in any area, be it tactics, building my first army, assembally, or painting.

As it goes, I'm planning on playing Space Marines. Crimson Fists, FTW.

Ark chuckled a little bit. "There'll be drinks plenty, Anna," he says. "Just as soon as we figure this mess out."

When the decision was arrived at that they would make camp, Ark volunteered to take watch for the night, and spent what darkness that remained in the night awake and alert; one hand on Raz's hilt, the sword laying across his lap with the edge bare and shimmering a rich orange-gold with its magic, though it wasn't enough to enhance his vision the way Ark had hoped. His other arm lay quiet around Anna's waist, and his blue eyes vigilant for any signs of movement. Ark often took those long watches; he had a touch of insomnia as it was, and the long silent hours gave him time to contemplate.

When his companion stood, Ark followed her up.

“I’d like to file a complaint with the management,” she said wearily as she contorted her body into a variety of stretches, “starting with the fact that I didn’t get fresh flowers delivered to my room.”

"Aw, poor princess," Ark teased. "And I suppose the bed had lumps too?"

---------------------------------------------

The next day brought an achy back and more of the same. Same mist, same field of choked trees, same sense of foreboding and dread. They set out east, Coming across the pool with little of note to speak of.

That, of course, was until they did it all again.

Anna put her face into her hands, “I feel like we’re being driven towards a particular path. I’d like to say we should just stay here until this strange phenomenon has worked itself out, but I doubt that would do it. Besides, pretty sure sitting here would drive me crazy,” she looked up at the rest of the group, “So, new direction?”

"New direction sounds about good," Ark agreed. "It's not as though we've got anything better to try, right?" The blond Bayrisian seemed chipper enough, smiling brightly.

Another day passed.

The next morning they set out again, and this time luck or the gods were with them. Eventually they worked their way back into sunshine and green forests. Then, the village came into view, and even from this distant vantage, Ark could feel the life. "Anna," he said with a grin. "We may get that drink after all..."

When he came across the doll, however, all Ark's exuberance took a blow. "By my father's grave, what in the hells is that...?"

Ark chuckled softly as Anna suggested a nightcap. "Normally, I'd be all for a good ale," he mutters. "But somehow, I doubt I'd be able to enjoy it. As for bedrolls... I'm sure you can bear to be away from your usual goose-down pillow for a night." The ruffian said that last bit with a gentle, teasing tone. "Shoulder will have to do, won't it?"

“I’m not so sure that a drink would be that great an idea Anna,” Arvin spoke in soft tones, “After all, we don’t know where we are or what’s out here waiting for us. I think that perhaps we should move away from this area and find a good place for me to set-up a shelter for us and get some rest,” the mage continued, “We can always come back in the morning…or would you rather try to return to that gods forsaken village in the middle of the night?”

Ark flinches a little, unaware that they had been listened to, but the interjection makes him realize that their potentially dangerous situation didn't have room for flirting and teasing. They were just... Teleported? Or was all this an illusion? Ark had no way of knowing. Many times, he preferred it that way; better not to know all the intricate, gory details of the latest horrible monster. Just how to kill it sufficed for him.

"I'm going to have to second that," he says. "We have no idea what we're up against. Whatever it is, I wager it'll be at least somewhat easier to defend against if we stay put until daylight."

Is there something you can't stand? A backstory that is SOOOO overused? A level build you just can't stand? Well, let it all out here!

Personally, my biggest role playing no-no is ye olde emo character. Doesn't bother me TOO much, but overly-tortured pasts are just a little bit of a turnoff.

Ark listened to the old man's rant with terse attention. It certainly painted a picture, that was certain. But what it meant in terms of what they were up against, and weather it could be trusted as accurate portrayal of what actually happened was up for grabs. Ark wasn't an expert on those sorts of things. He knew how to pick a lock. He could disarm a myriad lethal devices, from the most intricate systems to the classic Alchemist's Fire with a Tripwire on the Cork. But crazy ranting men, fire that gave no smoke, and disappearing villages? Not the young half-breed's forte.

Especially not when his surroundings melted away into emerald forests. The transition startled the cat-thief into drawing his blade. "I'm going to have to second that movement," he said, eyes panning about to survey their sudden change of surroundings. "Can't figure outwhere we're going till we know where we are, right?"

The point of his sword down, but his hand firm around Raz's hilt, Ark finds Anna and moves carefully towards her. "Hey," he murmurs quietly. Ark thought it unwise to take his usual boisterous tone in the middle of unfamiliar territory. His fighting intuition was still wondering where the ambush was. "How're you holding up?"

Now, I know you didnt use Ark as an example, buy I'm gonna explain myself anyways, just for solidarity's sake.

Ark is, by nature, an eternal optimist. Just who he is. So he might be more vulnerable to just that kind of deception, but when he sees the old man, he sees just that. A scared, panicked old man.

Following his companions through the first house, Aleric kept his hand firmly around the hilt of his sword, his off-hand secure around the scabbard's throat, thumb resting on the basket-type hand guard, ready to bring the blade free at a moment's notice. He said nothing through their tour of the first residence, a grim expression upon his normally lively face. To be honest, there was little to joke about. A man staked and immolated in the town square put a rather fine damper on that sort of thing.

It was at the tavern that Ark gave voice to his first grievance. "It's almost like the night was in full swing," he stated quietly, his usually lively tenor dulled and sober. "And all of a sudden everyone just..." He made a waving motion with his hand. "Got up and left." The drinks were the saddest part of the scene; ales and stouts, bitters and lagers, pilsners and porters, wine and mead and spirits, mugs full to the brim, some with the head still happily waiting for a drinker that had somehow forgotten of them. A night of fun and camaraderie lost by some unknown clause, the walls that normally held warmth and happiness, good drinks, good food, and good memories between them, lay empty and cold while the fire burned not in the hearth, but in a macabre funeral pyre out in the square.

When they moved outside yet again, that was when Ark truly began to grow suspicious. "That... Isn't smoke," he said.

When they came upon the old man, Ark was surprised, but unthreatened. "Do I look like a demon to you, good sir?" he asked, striding up to the scene. Mylos was alright, but if Marius was trying to convince what seemed to be a borderline delirious elder-type that he, in fact, was NOT demonsent, he wasn't doing a very good job. "I know my friend here can be a little gruff," the rogue continued, resting an arm across the witch-hunter's shoulders. "But do you see any horns?" that was Ark's jokester, coming back to light. He couldn't help it, honestly. Sure, there's a corpse burning in your square and all your neighbors are mysteriously missing, and a heavily armed, in some cases rather shady, but one and all completely foreign group of strangers have shown up at your door, but at least they aren't ACTUAL DEMONS. His father always told him that life was so much sweeter when viewed so.

"Oh, mint jelly? Dare I say it, dear Annaliese, that sounds positively luscious!" Ark was doing his utmost best to sound like a snooty noble, as he sat beside his fellow Bayrisian. "Kebabs, Anna! Spit-roasted skewers of meat and veggies! Onions, peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes... Real food, made with love instead of pomp." The young theif 'mmm's in appreciation. "Oh, look at that, I'm making myself hungry."

Ark stretched lightly, leaning back on his arms. "You know, I kinda miss those days," he says. "Only time in my life I went jumping off rooftops just for fun, you know?" The odd-eyed rogue yawned gently, Smirking with the nostalgia.

Indeed, he had missed those days. Of course, back then he stole the kebabs instead of buying them, but it only made them taste sweeter. Of course, now that he was in position to pay, he had no reason not to, but the memories were still fond ones. In retrospect, near-poverty had been quite kind to Ark.
