Topic: Self-Defense For Nerds: How Do You Do It?
Subject: Defending thyself

It is always important in today’s society to understand the need to fend for yourself and not depend upon others to protect you. I learned long ago that law enforcement individuals cannot defend the individual but are many here to protect society as a whole. Therefore it is up to each person to find their own manner of preserving their life and their beliefs as they see fit.

I do not condone telling others how to live. If their way of life does not harm me or others then they are entitled to live in whatever manner they choose.

I am a Buddhist, and lead a spiritual life without the thought of god or the divine. Not saving I don’t believe there was some kind of intelligence behind the creation of man, just that I don’t believe there is an almighty God watching over each and every one of us. So in a sense it is still up to each of us to fend for ourselves once again.

Now, I don’t want to turn this into a religious debate so let’s leave it at that. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs and I will not be little anyone for what it is they believe in. Faith in anything is a wonderful thing.

Now on to the subject of defense, I was never a large person though I did play some football in HS. I was not a starter and not very good. I moved a lot as a child and hardly made friends but bullies seemed to like picking on me. So I started learning Aikido at an early age to defend myself. I have always been kind of a pacifist in that I never wished to harm anyone but didn’t mean I would let them hurt me. So I chose Aikido since it was about defense rather than attack like Karate or other disciplines. What I learned helped me to defend myself from the bullies who learned to go pick on easier targets.

I am currently a Yondan (4th degree blackbelt) in Yoshokai Aikido and while I still won’t instigate a fight I am not afraid to defend myself if the need arises, and it has upon a couple of occasions throughout my life. As a Buddhist I value all life, including my own, and I have learned to defend myself and my family because I believe that it is irrational to depend upon others to do it for you.

So in what ever way you can, protect your life and those of your loved ones and don’t be afraid to stand up for what you believe.

~ Mike

edit: I really should proof read these things more carefully

Thank you all for the welcomes.

I will try to answer some things you have addressed:

Pyroboom - StoryTeller is what I am, I have no RDInn character for I am a DM.

Odyson – You must understand that as a DM I am not subject to saving throws and therefore can never fail them. The only facelicking I am subject to are those from my wife or faithful hound, but I welcome this ‘Eol’ character to try if he dares.

Lonewolf – Of course RPGer is a word… see here : RPGer

As for my games, I am working on which one I shall bring to the table. Once I know I will start a recruitment thread and dare those adventurous souls to come forth and test their mettle.

Thanks again for the greetings.

Greetings fellow D&Ders. My name is Mike and my online ‘handle’ is Story Teller. Actually a friend of mine gave me that name years ago when I started DMing almost exclusively for our group. I prefer to DM rather than play, I guess I like telling a story and my friends think I have quite a knack for it. They seem to enjoy my adventures till their character dies. JK

More about me; I just turned the big 50 last month and I have to say I don’t feel that old, though some times my body will remind me of my age.

I found my way here through a RPG Gateway from which I checked out a couple of the sites. I liked this site because it looked friendly and it didn’t ask me to ‘audition’ my writing skills to join. At my age I don’t feel I have to prove myself to anyone really.

I have been reading the site for a couple of days and like what I see so here I am. I am not a novice at online gaming having done it for several years but I have been absent from RP websites for a couple of years. My RL group has taken a few hits of people not being able to get together for several sessions so I find myself with some game time I need to fill.

I hope to recruit some people here in the near future for gaming session, though 2nd edition was always my favorite I also do up to 3.5. So after I kind of learn my way around this site look for a recruitment thread from me one day soon.

Oh, and as a DM I now cast a spell of my own creation, ‘Anti-Moisture Shell’. It protects me from all attempts to face lick me and causes them to rebound upon the licker. The spell is nonreversible and can not be dispelled. As I said I have been reading the site and find myself forwarned.

Grabs a mug of the legendary RDI Froth-n-slosh and kicks back by the fireplace. Here is a toast to many adventures to come.

Hope to see you all around.

Mike
