Afternoon

From upstairs, Papa called down to bring up a large pot of the stew, and that he'd be down soon. Girta'a rolled her eyes and told him she would in a moment, then turned back to Karos. "I'm sorry, would you mind? I can't leave the shop in case others come. It'd be a big help, and big fill of your belly," she added with a laugh, and without waiting for him to agree or not, disappeared intot he kitchen. When she returned, she cradled a large steaming stock pot in one arm, and basket laden with loaves and cakes in another.

"It's just up there," she explained, and gestured with a toss of her head. "thanks agin, I really appreciate this." She quickly filled his arms and snt him on his way.

"Well met then.".  Karos smiles at Girta'a and waits patiently as her father and her speak.  When she asks for help, he blinks a bit in surprise but nods, a bit grateful for the distraction.  If he didn't have anything to do, then he would just wander around the marketplace, hoping to catch a glimpse of his old crew members.

Taking the things from Girta'a, he focuses on the work, enjoying the distraction.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the Cellar, Karos quickly glances around, taking note of possible escape avenues as a habit.  Or at the very least a place to hide.  The Gnome is beside him and although Karos would try to smile and such, he felt no need to make small chat or introduce himself.

As he walks further into the Cellar and a familiar voice greets him, Karos relaxes much more and his face breaks out into a genuine smile.

“Karos!” Castien’s smile returned, full and friendly, at the sight of the young rogue and he stepped forward to greet his friend as they reached the bottom of the steps. “Nae saian lumme’, mellonamin, (It has been too long, my friend)” he grinned, clasping Karos’ forearm in greeting, “You look well.”

Clasping Castien's forearm in return, his mouth opens to respond when a loud knock resounded.  Turning his attention towards it, he smiles at Castien and quickly says "I am well.  We'll chat later.".

Karos is rather silent while he listens, trying to figure out which mask, which persona or demeanor would be appropriate here...  No you fool, these are supposed to be your companions.  No secrets necessary, no facades.  Dammit Karos.  He curses mentally at himself as he suppresses his instincts.

When his time for introductions come, he speaks "Hello everyone, My name is Karos.  I'm quite well suited for slinking around in the shadows or gathering a lot of attention I find, and I am looking forward to working together with all of you.".

As for the contents of the mission.. He was not overly worried about it.  Someone has asked me to help Cas and I will.  There is nothing else I need to know then.

Topic: Advice for a new RDI GM
Subject:

I'm not going to pretend to be a competent DM on RDI, I think i'm decent in person but RDI i'm still learning quite a bit. So take everything I say with a grain of salt

1.  I would say you can handle the rolls, it makes things easier, keeps it honest.  I personally use a dice roller online that I am particularly fond of already and if a player wants to see the rolls, I can just screen shot it and send it to them.

2. I remember when I ran the dark sun campaign, most of the pictures I posted just had a link to imgur.  I don't recall how bad it was uploading pictures directly to the site but you can probably get away with it through image hosting files like that

3. I don't really know enough about that.  i think a lot of people do just post character sheets in the Q&A thread but I got no real clue

4. Again I don't know too much about it, it's nice to have to post quests, lore information and I personally post character sheets for people in supernatural, (tho if it's DnD and everyone knows the system, they can prolly post their own).

You rolled a 3, 1, and a 4.

You recall a student of yours, someone who was confused about what to do with the rest of their lives.  they had briefly bounced back and forth between studies, however he seemd to turn his life around about 5 years ago.  He had just graduated from engineering and you recall a collegue of yours speaking about him a few months ago.

His name is Jonathan M'cloade, and you are able to find him on facebook after about 10 to 15 minutes of searching.

Karos wanders along the streets of Watertown, easily making it's way through the familiar pathways.  He spends a lot of time walking lately, relishing in the opportunity to think, to settle the chaotic feelings that swirl inside him, his memories of Helana, his anger at her death and at the framing.  Glancing at the bag of gold at his pouch, he clenches his fists angrily before relaxing suddenly.

Going towards and abandoned alleyway, he takes out the page of arcane knowledge carefully hidden on his person and examines it.  He touches the writing on it tenderly as if it somehow will bring back his lost friend before stowing it away again.

Taking some time to scale up the side of a small building, he sits down there and sighs reaching into his pack for a letter.  Although he had read it before, he reads it over one more time.

Dear Karos,

First, let me say Castien speaks highly of you, and of your talents. Though we do not know each other well, what I have learned of you has led me to the same conclusion, that you are in nature and in heart a good and decent man, in whom I can place my trust. While our interactions together have been spare, I have only ever felt you to be a good person, and it is to this part of you that I beseech your aid in a matter most dear to my heart. One which weighs heavy on my heart and mind.

Grief and loss come to us all, in time. It is loss that usually brings people here, to Astryliene, i have found. Loss of family, of friends, of hope, of wealth, of direction. Loss of purpose. And those of us who make Her temple our home are not immune to more of it, I am afraid. for i have lost, among others, a sister. For six years, I have mourned her, but tried to put her final moments out of my mind. Yet, I find, as time passes, i can no longer ignore it.

While most of this world wanders and stubles around, flailing blindly against our own selves, you seem to know your way. You have in you, I believe, an innate sense of purpose and direction. And I suppose partly owing to your past, you know what you want and how to get it. i have need of those talents. I am putting together a small group of individuals whose talents compliment your own, for an undertaking I am unable to take on myself. But were you to agree to this, you would be in tremendous company. I have asked our mutual friend Castien to investigate the connections between Lya's death and  the town to Ghostwood, far to the east of the Deeper Wilds. It is a town at the center of several strange and terrible events both current and past, and I feel you might be able to assist him. You will be able to gain access to people and places unavailable to him. People who might not feel comfortablespeaking to a member of Astryliene's faithful. Places of a more questionable nature than he is used to frequenting.

i fear that, without you, he may not gain the knoweledge I seek, and so I ask you plainly, will you help? The temple will always be open to you should you say no, but I would ask you to look inside yourself for the losses you yourself may have suffered in life, and perhaps those might give you cause to agree. In addition to Castien, I have asked a your warrior in whom I have complete trust and respect to assist in your safekeeping, and another from farther into the Deeper Wilds, who may be able to assist with the more nature-based issues that might present themselves during your quest.

Should you agree to help, please visit Halfred's Bake Shoppe in the MArket district, and ask for Girta'a. She has been entrusted with the rest of the information you need, and will help to send you on your way once the others arrrive.

Yours with a grateful heart,

Lys, of Astryliene's Faithful

Castien... He owes that man a debt.  Lys is an interesting fellow, someone who dares to stand up to the nobles which is something to be respected.  Although he had very little dealings with her, if Lys is asking for his aid, he wouldn't be unwilling to help her.  Even more so with Castien mentioned.

He skims over the words about loss, the absence of his crew, his family; the pain still fresh in his chest.  The thought of travelling to ghostwood...  Although he would like to spend time searching for the traitor responsible for Helena's capture and what he can only presume death, perhaps some time spent away would be good.  Healthy even.

As he reads this, he sees a group of children, dressed in shabby clothing and fairly thin, playing together and laughing.  He thinks about better times looking towards the sky wistfully.  After a moment, he thinks Helena is gone, out of my reach, even if she is alive, there is no way for me to rescue her.  I could do some good in the meantime.  I won't be able to help her now.  Won't be able to find the mole yet.  I need a crew to help, need another family.

He comes to the sudden realization that he has already started moving, his mind still trying to choose when his body has long since decided.

Chuckling softly to himself, he realizes that he has been lonelier than he'd care to admit.  Castien is a good man, one that has taken care of him and if he were to leave on this quest, Karos would be alone again.

Opening the door to  Halfred's Bake Shoppe, he smiles politely at the half orc, quickly saying "Although your treats smell delicious, I'm afraid I'm here on business.  I believe someone named  Girta'a should be expecting me?  I'd like to speak to her.".

Concerning the rolls,  I'm actually porting over a mechanic from another system.  you got 3d6, roll em and for each result upwards of 4, that coutns as a success.

You know this guy so let's say you can roll 3d6 and if you get 2 successes, he's a friend from old that is happy to hear from you and do a favour.

You get 1, he forgets who you are but can be persuaded to do a favour for you at a cost

you get a 0, well that's a bit of a surprise  You know him and can contact him but there might be a complication

If you get a 3, he was one of those friends that considered you his best friend but maybe you didn't feel the same way.  either way, he's definitely willing to do a favour for you.

You can roll it IRL, electronically or you  can let me roll it electronically.  Entirely up to you.  i trust my players

As for the libraries, that makes sense.  I got no clue how it functions IRL but to make it easier, I"m just gonna devaite from IRL when necessary.  I post infrequently enough, doing research into that might make the posts even longer in between.

Taking me a while to digest everyone's posts, they're so detailed!  I'm honestly very impressed

Just to get a bit of clarification, is the dialogue between NPC's done via lady dark or do you just fill it in yourself?  I don't think I've played enough PBP on this site to know unfortunately.

I'd like to improve my posts to get nearer to the level of detail of you guys but I sinceerely doubt that'll happen anytime soon.  Nonetheless, I'd like to fix it where I can!

1) So there's a variety of ways you could go about this.  you would definitely have access to books about this in the school library if not your house.

Concerning research to the occult, heck yea, you have a bunch of books, I think you research medevial studies so for sure you could attempt to see if there's any folk lore.

Concerning elctrical company...

googling online, you could take a look at areas of extended blackouts that have been issues to places prior.  However that only tells you big blackouts that are unable to resolved within a few hours.

The electrical company would be a good way to get information but they are unlikely to give you that information without incentive.  If you would like, you can say Castle knows a colleague that you fell out of touch with that worked in the electrical business. I'd just have to ask you to make a roll to see how well he likes you

other than that, you could break into the records, disguise your way into the building or a variety of other ways that I have not thought up yet.

Preston Prowler watches this exchange with interest, twirling his hat in hands idly while he listens.

At Haze's outburst, it is plain to see that the people around start looking at your table with concern, whispering to themselves quietly before Colum chastises Haze.  Preston tips his hat off to him and smiles, real friendly to the folks looking.  The crowd stops paying attention as he dismissively waves at them, letting them know that he's working on it.

At Colums' words, he nods, though he furrows his brows in deep contemplation.  "Putting us on a scent to throw us off it?  Seems strange to me.  But needs to be considered.".  he mutters to himself, loudly enough that anyone at the table can hear it if they were paying attention.

He takes note to talk to the boy, Haze before they leave.  Preston listens to Castle's opinion of the man and seems to take the compilation of notes at face value then, looking at them over Castle's shoulder.

As Castle and Colum state that they are working together, asking Preston whether or not he is willing to join them, he smiles knowingly.

"The Lord has given me allies to work with.  I was intending on getting to the bottom of this matter regardless, so having you guys by my side is truly a blessing.".

Turning to Haze, he smiles kindly at him, asking him "Okay Haze.  You don't have to work with us, but I'm thinking you might like a place to stay.  I've got a church that has an extra bedroom that's not in use right now.  I understand your fear, but sometimes you have to fight so that others don't have to experience that fear.  Right now, all the people that are getting harmed by this man in white, all of them must be afraid and confused.  I don't want that happening to the lord's people.  To anybody.  I'm not saying I'm an expert in this but I've had a bit of dealings with "bad juju".   Way I figure, we've got the best chance of stopping this from happening.".

Noticing his rambling, he clarifies.  "Just take a night to rest in a warm bed with some good food in your stomach.  You can leave after, if you wanna run, I'm not gonna stop you.".

Turning to Castle and Colum, he asks "Any of you got a safe space we can work on in the meantime?  I'd like to examine these documents a bit further from prying eyes.".

Preston Prowler looks a bit taken aback by the sudden appearance of Castle, and claps suddenly.  "The Lord works in mysterious ways.  I've never once dealt with something like this nor heard of anyone else that knows something similar and now 2 of you have come to me, knowing what lurks outside.".

He offers his hand to Castle, intending on shaking his hand.  "My Name's Pastor Preston, or perhaps Preston Prowler, some people like to call me Bullock though.".  He smiles and tips his hat at him.

As McRath flips through the pages, he takes a closer look.  "I've seen a bit of this before i felt the need to hide it.".

A map with a circle and the words first time? on a small daycare center is inside. A newspaper article of a disastrous daycare that was forced to shut down. All of the workers decided to get hammered, neglecting the children. This happened approximately a year and a half ago. Preston read more and cases are detailed, spanning back this year. About 2 cases predated this time when suddenly multiple cases popped up this month.  Upon closer examination, there appears to be a correlation that their benefactor has found.  Supposedly there are usually electrical disturbances, about a week or two before an incidence starts, with the headlines that the media asks "Where did we go wrong?" or something along those lines.

The day care is brought into attention again, with notes messily scrawled on the back of another picture.  It appears to be of the caretakers, the boss being a lady in her mid 30s.

A church going lady all her life, her father overdosed on heroin and passed away.  She swore she'd never do anything like that and has been fighting against the sale of Heroin, tipping the police off about certain deals at some risk to herself.  There was a complaint from parents as their power went out and electricians weren't able to find issues with it.  It fixed itself after a day.  6 days after the electrical disturbance, the woman OD'd in the bathroom of the daycare.  What could someone have to gain from this?  It appears self inflicted, no one forced her.  It doesn't make sense...

A printed sheet of a toxicology report is attached and it appears that there were no traces of long term Heroin usage.  It was as if something caused her to snap and she just couldn't stop doing it.

Finally, there is a very blurry image taken from a traffic camera of a man in the background holding a cane. The picture is very grainy but it appears he is wearing entirely white.

Preston takes his hat off, and puts it in his lap, thinking to himself.  "What do you folks think we should do?  Man in White is the issue but how are we gonna find him?  And also I've never dealt with anything on this level before.".

Name: Karos "Janus"

Race (Sex): Human (variant)

Class (Lvl): Rogue (1)

Background: Urchin

Alignment: Chaotic neutral

Height: 6'0"  Weight: 180 lbs

Languages: Common, Elvish

Eyes: Brown  Hair: Black

Backstory
Karos grew up in Watertown and never knew his parents.  His earliest memory was living on the streets, being taken care of by some other children that he would grow up to love and care for, to do anything he could to protect them.  As children, they would plan small 'heists', nothing drastic just a piece of fruit here or a copper piece there.  Their biggest hit was when a wagon overturned at a festival where it dropped a bunch of sweets.  Ah, they ate well that day.

As time passed on, they grew closer and closer, their bonds thicker than blood.  Some of them started to get actual gold from their little heists.  Their skills started to develop and harder jobs were done, more gold was gotten.  Life was good.

Kairos earned the name Janus among his peers.  There was an old story about a man with two faces and Karos had been the one who could con anyone.  At least among their crew.  During the years, Karos had gotten rather close with another person in the party, a woman named Helena.  Although everyone cared for each other the bond between Karos and Helena ran deeper than the others.

It appeared that their little crew could never be stopped, they felt young and invincible.  Sure they had gotten beat up, lost a lot of jobs and stuff but who hadn't?  Kairos was particularly fond of a temple that he frequently went to for rest and support, donating a portion of his earnings there.  If he hadn't he wouldn't feel.... right.  Regardless, this feeling of invincibility only got stronger when Helena got her hands on someone's spell book.

She had learned a few spells and they had bolstered their activity, till soon enough they were getting gold pieces by the day!  It seemed like their dream of leaving the city would be fulfilled in no time.  Until the guards came.  They knew she had cast magic even though no one would have sold her out.  They arrested her, the rest of their band wanting to fight tooth and nail in order to stop them when suddenly the head captain thanked Karos for the tip.

Dumbfounded, he protested but the captain smiled at him and told him he had earned a decent sum of gold and a favour from the guard.  A striking of his records.  The rest of his group turned on him, the bonds shattered instantly.

Beaten, with nowhere else to turn to, he made his way to the Temple that he had resided at, trying to rest and recover enough to go out but not having much success.  He wasn't a lone wolf and the absence of his friends and family that lived with him throughout his life pained him.

Quickly taking to one of the workers at the temple, someone named Castien, he attempts to form a new "crew", a new family.  He knows that he has to bide his time. Till the day he can find out whoever ratted on Helena and get his revenge.  He still holds out hope that she is still alive and that they will meet one day, treasuring the scrap of paper he managed to cling onto from her spellbook.

  • - You have advantage on Charisma (Deception) and Charisma (Performance) checks when trying to pass yourself off as a different person. - You can mimic the speech of another person or the sounds made by other creatures. You must have heard the person speaking, or heard the creature make the sound, for at least 1 minute. A successful Wisdom (Insight) check contested by your Charisma (Deception) check allows a listener to determine that the effect is faked.

  • When one has no family of blood, the family of choice fills that void. The crew meant everything to you, it was home. Without it, you almost feel exposed. When you are with your full crew, once per day you can extend your stealth skills to your companions, giving everyone +5 to stealth checks. This increases to +10 at level 10. Additionally, at level 10, you may use this once per short or long rest. You must be within 30 feet of your farthest companion to use this feat.
