Backing up in the darkness, almost surrounded by undead, Aranwen loses her footing on the uneven forest floor. The ground seems to rise up out of the darkness, hurtling quickly towards an impending doom. The Bladesinger, knowing that lying prostrate on the ground now would surely result in her death, quickly reacts. Letting her instincts take over, the agile Sylvari rolls with her fall, letting her momentum put some distance between her and the monstrosities coming at her, all the while being sure to keep her trusted blade from touching the ground. For to do so would mean the desecration of her sword, and she would have to abandon it on the battlefield and search for another. Now would not be a good time for that!

Coming up from his improvised roll, Aranwen surveys the situation before her. It is grim to bear. The party is nearly surrounded by undead. Everyone has taken injury at some point. The fight is not going our way! We sorely need Ch'dau to reinforce us! Aranwen notices Gib analyzing the situation as well. The battle priest calls out "The tactical retreat isn't working, there are too many! Aranwen, call a full retreat. We cannot withstand this onslaught further."

It seems she has arrived at a different conclusion. The Bladesinger shakes her head. "We will not survive a retreat" she replies to Gib. Raising her voice to be heard clearly above the din of battle, Aranwen calls out "Ch'dau to the front! Midge and Cedric, drop back when he arrives! Gib and I will cover you."

(OOC: Aranwen will stop the tactical retreat, fighting defensively, putting the +2 bonus from Bladesinger class into AC.)

I'm torn between doing a full retreat, and making a stand, calling Ch'dau back to the fight. Let me know what you guys think, or if there's any other options you can think of.

Olan, just how many zombies are we up against? A rough estimate is what I'm looking for...

My suggestion was not to split up. Aranwen told Ch'dau to carry Kith back, and that the rest would defend them on the way. No splitting up intended

As Aranwen steps out into the small clearing in the woods and observes the nightmarish scene before her, all rational and conscious thought leaves him as he allows himself to be lost in his battle trance. The Bladesinger goes into a deadly dance of death, her blade humming as she drives it upwards, slicing through the giggler standing over Kithran's unnaturally still form, barely noticing as Ch'dau rends the other monstrosity to pieces, pinning it to a tree, and as Cedric and Midge tend to Kith's wounds.

With the imediate threat taken care of, Aranwen now turns her attention to the approaching horde of shambling undead. After a brief interchange between the priests, Cedric retrieves the shining steel disk that serves as his holy symbol from within his robes, and Gib raises his sword before him and rebukes the undead, shouting "The Power of Therassor compels thee! Get thee GONE!"

As holy light begins to wash over the party, Aranwen is shaken from her battle trance, rational thought returning. Realizing that an all out fight with these monsters will likely end in the party being overrun, the Sylvari calls out "Good! Drive as many away as you can." Looking toward Ch'dau, who seems bent on charging into the midst of the zombies, Aranwen reaches out and touches his shoulder "My friend, we must get Kith out of here, to safety. You must take her! Go! Back toward the campsite. We will defend you!"

(OOC: Hopefully, Ch'dau will comply, freeing up our spellcasters to work their magic. I would like to take out as many zombies as possible, while retreating back toward the camp)

Watching Kithran slip into the shadows of the forest, Aranwen is uneasy, holding back her instinct to call her back, or even accompany her, knowing her own ability to move quietly pales in comparison to his stealthy companion.

Waiting for Kith to return, the whole camp is on edge. Ch'dau pacing back and forth, mumbling his protestations about how long its been, the worry for his "Little Kitten" plain for all to see. Gib's concern for the rogue is apparent as well, his watchfulness is unparalleled. Cedric and Midge, as well, are clearly worried for their companion, at the ready for any sign.

The minutes tick by, seeming like hours there in the darkness, waiting for Kith to return. But silence reigns, as the pressure mounts, and Aranwen's mind turns to dark thoughts. Why so long? Something must be wrong...maybe she's in trouble and can't call out! How long should I wait? Have I waited too long already? Just as she is about to speak out and set off in search for Kith, a distant roar of battle splits the night. All 5 companions spring into action at the sound, but Gib finds his voice first "Do NOT rush off!" he calls out to his companions and more directly to Ch'dau. "The survival of our friend likely depends on our ability to arrive in force, Therassor willing." The eyes of all the party members look toward Aranwen for direction. The Kazari, barely able to hold back from rushing ahead alone, quietly growls "Quickly, khatun" clearly not willing to wait long for the Bladesinger's direction.

Aranwen's mind quickly takes stock of the situation and formulates a hasty plan of attack. "Gib and Ch'dau, you lead the way. Stay together but move quickly to find her." Looking toward Cedric and Midge, the Sylvari continues "You two follow them as fast as you can. I'll be right behind you, keeping rear guard." Everyone springs into motion. Gib looks toward Cedric "Will Solanis bless us with light?" Not waiting for an answer, the war priest moves off with Ch'dau in Kith's direction, closely followed by Cedric and Midge. Blade in hand, Aranwen takes up her position as rear guard, eyes roving the forest for any signs of danger. The light of the campfire quickly fades from view, and the darkness of the woods takes over. Why did I let her go off alone? Please let us get there in time!

Subject: What goes bump in the night?

Awakening in the darkness to the sound of a distant scream, Aranwen uses her senses to reach out around herself, attempting to disern any dangers lurking in the shadows around the campsite. The Kazari, also aware of the disturbance, is instantly on his feet, blades drawn in readiness for battle. The silence seems to stretch on for an eternity, then another scream, far off, further into the woods, sounds in the night. Although the scream is distant, the sound is almost deafening to the ears of the perceptive Sylvari.

(OOC: Aranwen is using her Awareness skill to listen and look for any signs of danger and locate the source of the screams)

Aranwen observes Ch'dau crouching next to Kith, who was on watch and therefore already awake. “What do you make of that, Little Kitten,” the Kazari asked softly, “Has it only been the screams or has there been giggling, as well?”

Rising from his resting place, drawing his sword, Aranwen looks to the rest of his companions to see if they are awake, ready to rouse them from their slumber if need be...

Subject: At the Stream

As the light begins to fade, the party reaches the stream.  It is perhaps eight to twelve feet wide in most areas, sitting recesssed beneath banks of clay and tree roots some two or so feet down.  A few rocks jut from the water, causing the only noise you have heard all day aside from the wind and the occassional snap or a branch.  The water itself appears to be no more than a foot or so deep.  The darkening sky here is only visible though a few small cracks in the tree canopy above.

What say you, Khatun Aranwen,” Ch’dau says, his words the being the first sounds to cut the silence other than the babbling of the river behind them, “Are we to make camp on this side of the stream or do we cross, first, and scout the other side before we call an end to the day?”

The Bladesinger surveyed the scene before her, searching for something, anything to indicate the proper course of action. "I don't like either choices. This all seems too familiar, like the road to Crandel, full of fog and unexplainable noises. I feel as if an attack could happen at any time."

Looking around for confirmation of his feeling, Aranwen adds "Unless anyone has any better ideas, I say we keep moving, ford the stream and take our chances on the other side."

Hi guys. Sorry for the inactivity. I have been traveling a lot. Drove about 1600 miles over the past weekend or so. Went from Florida to Georgia, then to North Carolina for a wedding, then back to Florida yesterday.

I do want Aranwen to discreetly question the woodsman regarding the attack and any events leading up to it. And Aranwen will graciously refuse any material offering of the woodsman.

We will want to dispose of the bodies, after seaching for any clues on them as to their origin, as well as helping put the cabin in order.

Olan, I have no problem with your assumptions regarding the actions Aranwen took in this instance. Circumstances didn't leave him with much choice.

After a night of rest, the party leaves town, heading west in hopes of tracking down the source of this ongoing terror. The weather and mood are, if anything, worse than before. The infernal mists still cling to the ground more than ever, obscuring sight. The road is empty, and deathly quiet. The air is devoid of the usual sounds of birds and insects, but there is an odd crackling noise to be heard now and again.

The day passes uneventfully, until suddenly out of the mist a form lurches towards the party. Alarmed, everyone reaches for their weapons, but as the form approaches, it can be seen that it is a wounded man. He wears the leathers of a woodsman, his shirt torn, and bloodly gashes can be seen along his belly. He is bruised and cut, and his beard is matted with blood.

"Gods be praised!" he exclaims when he draws near.  "Ye are livin' folk!  Please, 'elp me!  Me wife and boys, they're in tha cabin, but tha dead 'ave crawled from the ground, an' are tryin' to drag us down wit' 'em!  The 'ad me, nearly killed me, but I go' away, went fer 'elp, I did.. gods be praised, ye lot are 'ere!  Please, there are too many fer me, I canna save them meself!  Please, I beg 'o ye, I'll do anythin'... please save me family!"

Ch’dau moved to intercept the man. “This cabin, human,” he rumbled, “Where is it?”

((OOC: Assuming an answer of some sort… ))

At the man’s words, the Kazari looks to Aranwen and the expression on his feline face is not one seeking orders or even asking permission. Instead, without the words needing to be spoken, the big cat’s look says; “I’m going. Who else?”

Gib begins searching through his bag, gathering bandages and healing salve.

"When did this start?" Cedric asks the man. "How many creatures did you see? Have you noticed anything strange over the past few days?"

(OOC: Assuming an answer of some sort... ))

"Come on guys!" the priest of Solaris urges. "This man needs our help."

"There does appear to be a need for alacrity," Gib reluctantly agrees, closing his bag as Cedric begins the prayers to his god for a miracle. Looking directly at Ch'dau he continues with his advice, "Rushing into such a situation without any surveillance would be folly. Should the God of Light and Life find it prudent to provide this poor soul some healing, I'll take that as a definite sign that the Divine are in favor of the goal."

Now looking to Aranwen, he continues, "If we are to break from the road, I suggest we do so in formation and with all due caution."

Kith folds her arms in front of her, "I am with you, my friend, but let us consider Gib's words before pursuing our raid. They've caught us by surprise every time we've faced them thus far. Let's turn that around this time. What say you?"

Aranwen carefully watches the surrounding area, searching for signs of movement in the mists, or sounds that speak of anything amiss in the area. "I agree with the need for caution. Let us see to this man's needs, but let us do it as one." Addressing the injured man, Aranwen asks "Please, good sir, direct us, as you may, to your cabin, so that we may rescue your family from those unholy creatures."

I agree with resting up, then leaving in the morning. Also, our healers should use any remaining healing spells available on any injured members before resting.
