Topic: The Chakran Portal - Q/A
Subject: okie then

Thanks guys, for the kind words and the positive reactions. It would be my pleasure to continue this adventure with you all, if we can do so with revived interest.

Now as a possibility, I will allow any of you who want to make a new character the option to do so, except for Draven. He has something going on that is important for the adventure.
All the other players can post a concept of something IF they wish to trade characters. Don't make a whole character yet, because I might not agree with everything that you come up with.

Topic: The Chakran Portal - Q/A
Subject: honesty

Guys, I'm going to be honest with you all:

I'm losing interest in this game.

Part of the fun of being a DM is to see enthusiastic reactions from the players. I don't see that anymore for this game. Everybody posts on Friday-evening, like it's a mandatory thing instead of a game you want to post to. Don't take me wrong: there is nothing wrong with posting last minute, but I remember other times when there would be several posts on Monday already. It just shows that people are not as much connected to the game as they used to.

And I understand that completely. It has been a long adventure already, and we didn't even get close to the original goal of the game. This whole prelude was perhaps too long, and players (and characters) are starting to forget what they were doing it for. Of course this would be reality as well, but we're not really going to get a lot of money after this adventure, our characters are. Perhaps the reward that triggered your interest has been compromised? Perhaps the game is not as interesting as it once was?

I'd like for you guys to comment on this. And I want you all to be truthful. I don't want players to feel obligated to post. I want them to WANT to post.

We've pretty much lost two extra players: Jozan hasn't been very active lately, and Cdn probably forgot she was a part of this group.

Please understand: this is not a wake up call. This is a 'how can we revive our interest' call. We have a good group of players, we have an (in my opinion) interesting adventure, so what is wrong?

I don't want to give up this game after all this time, but seeing how slow it has been going lately, we have to find a way to improve things.

Let me start:
I would like for the players to interact more. Doesn't have to be IC interaction, but at least converse about the events that are happening. Not in this specific combat, because I asked you not to. But as an example: Kaelyn posted a Q/A about how to descend the mountain and approach the goblins; nobody replied. That means that -I- have to make up your actions, and I don't want to play for you. This is not the first time I've told you that.

If we agree that it's not going well than there's always the option of restarting the scenario, but in a different way: people could make new characters or keep their old ones. We can say that Guland sent a new group, and we can pick up the adventure where we left off, but with a new impulse. The new group could find whichever characters 'survived', or something like that. But that's just one of the options.

Please speak your minds freely.

Sui: you can't go until you know what the bard is going to do? Your initiative is first. Logically speaking, if you wait for Beinsel, that means your initiative is dropping to his. Or you can just post your own intentions, and I can NPC Beinsel. I don't want to wait for people too long.

Subject: The happening

As Fantasy said, we watched the Happening last weekend. Man, how a great director can go completely wrong... twice.

When Shyamalan made 'lady in the water', I thought that it was a one time miss. But the Happening SUCKS!

It's not just that the story is kinda weak, because it could've worked with better directing, acting and a better score.
The story is simple: people start killing themselves in masses on the east coast of the US. A group of people flees the area and starts looking for a way out. After a beginning with many unused opportunities for some good scares, the movie goes down in quality fast, and turns into something of a cheap 70s sci-fi thriller that just doesn't work.

I read a 'you didn't get it!' review on imdb.com that made some kind of excuse for the suckiness of this film, but it didn't convince me. If there was a reason for the director to purposely put awkward scenes in his movie, then we can say that Ed Wood made awkward movies on purpose and praise him for it. That's just nonsense.

The Chakran Mnts
15th day of the 8th month: Temoth Ore
8:21 pm

The first thing to do, was climbing the narrow path down the mountain towards the grassy plateau which lay waiting for them in the depth. From there they would have a much better view on the goblin camp, if that was what they had spotted down in the valley.

The descend over the narrow goat’s path was no real test for the hardened group, but the falling darkness was hindering their movement somewhat. Still, they reached the grassy plane safely, and could now afford themselves a better look at the encampment below.

The field rounded down into a rocky slope on the north side, which lead into the valley. The east and south side ended suddenly in steep cliffs, with jagged rocks and only darkness at their bottom. They showed a marvellous view over the valley, which now was drenched in shadow. The Khords amongst them could feel the rock shiver with every drum beat. It was hard to imagine an instrument so powerful that it could strike fear into the heart of rock, but the army below was wielding it with glee. For it was surely an army that lay beyond the edge of the field.
From this high ground they could see the fires more clearly, spotting the rocky slopes of the mountains. There were many, and in the flickering lights they noted the shadows of squirming forms, still tiny, but some far larger than the goblin race was known for. There must be hundreds of them running around; following orders, waiting impatiently or busy building tents for higher officers. Amidst the chaos there seemed a calm which goblins were unknown for. Perhaps Elessarae was speaking the truth. Perhaps there was a larger force combining tribes, or perhaps this was one tribe unlike any they had ever heard of. In any case, it was frightening.

But they did not have long to eye the madness of evil below them, for they could hear a shuffle of rock and the grunting of draconic voices close by. Then they spotted them: a group of dark forms was coming up a steep path from the south edge of the grass field. They had not seen the heroes yet, but it was a grassy plane they were standing on; there was nowhere to hide. Looking closely, they perceived ten small individuals, most likely goblins, accompanied by an ogre. Apparently, the ogre was urging the goblins forward with something that looked like a whip.

(OOC: You have 4 rounds to prepare yourselves for their arrival on the grassy plane. They arrive from a small and steep path leading close to the mountain. In 4 rounds you can run back to the mountainside and hide, but that doesn’t give you any time left to prepare anything. Communicating/ planning subtracts a round, so any talk give you less time (this also includes conversing about tactics in the Q/A). If you don’t hide or prepare, the goblins will see you as soon as they enter the plane, which will be at the beginning of round 5. Also, Alyssia has her Nimbus of Light on, which spreads a glow and gives her away immediately. Perhaps you should turn it off.)

Subject: rent?

It was a freaking nightmare, that’s what it was. A nightmare with opportunities. One moment he was on what promised to be another mind-numbing routine inspired job, the next he was flushed down a drain of horrors, swirling faster and faster. Clues and realizations were untwirling before him so rapidly that Lucas was starting to lose his mind. If he hadn’t lost it already, years ago, on that dreadful yet liberating evening that his landlord came to complain about rent.

rent…

Who would worry about rent in this kind of situation? And so the sudden doom of undeath slowly started changing into a wave of chance. Vandervoort was starting to see the benefits. And it helped him clear his mind.

That’s right, drop the damn animal. he thought as both his colleagues let go of the wolf. Who needed a dead wolf when soon he would have a real specimen.

But then they became aware of the mob surrounding the vehicles. Most of all, Vandervoort was focused on the mobile lab. If he could get the injured private in there, bound and well, he would surely find out a lot more about the disease and how it affects those it infested. For he was now convinced, by experience or inspired by the zombie movies he had seen, that the soldier did not have long to live. And he wouldn’t have long to die either, if he was going to become one of those wandering corpses.

Vandervoort looked around, and saw the fear and horror on his companions’ faces. He himself most surely was as pale as them, apparently shocked at the horrific sight before them. But he was going to use them, if he wanted to stay alive; if he wanted to do the research he was born to do!

“Sergeant! We need the lab so I can work on your private’s wounds! If we don’t get him in there, he will surely die. And if you don’t get your men straight, we will all die! I don’t want to die right now! Can you clear a path to the lab?”

(OOC: IF a path is formed leading towards the lab, Lucas will stay in the center of the action, staying as far away from reaching zombie hands as possible. But if he needs to duck to get to the lab, he will do so. His research is too important for him, his goals too single-optioned. He will shout to Shafer for keys, if the sergeant doesn’t do that already. And I also hope he’s not going to get infected on his first real zombie encounter!)

Thunder River
North West Dock
Drefast

~Positive Tide is normal
~Negative Tide is rising

Percifeer wasn’t sure if her bolt had done anything, and time was going by without her companions coming up for air. The bubbles had ceased to arise at the surface, and for all she knew the battle was over. But she couldn’t give up, and started an intricate casting that would call a creature from another dimension into the waters to aid her. This was not an easy feat, and took precious time. Still, she was hoping it would help her brothers.

Beinsel had overcome the first shock of Pio being dragged into the waters, and started doing what he did best; sing. And he proved worthy of his reputation, for his melody was an enticing one, and the words that accompanied it were strong and invigorating. His performance was to the benefit of his family, but after a few strums he found the shadows of many a passer by halt as their casters stopped to see what was going on at the docks.

But though his music echoed clearly through the harbor, underwater thuds and gulps were all Pio could hear. He was pressing the creature’s chaotic techniques, trying to find an opening to deliver a second punch, but he was so occupied keeping the Sea Cat off his body that his blows did not strike home.
The cat, in return, delivered a solid blows to the knight’s neck, and though his skin was not punctured, he felt a sharp pain as if he dislocated something.

Miran was not ready to give up so easily. Instead of joining the fray he decided to punch his dagger into the swirling, sinking mass that was Pio and the monster. He had to time it right, or he would surely skewer his brother. Fortunately, this was not Miran’s first dagger fight, and the blow was well aimed an placed. He stabbed the creature’s spine, got his blade stuck between two ribs and was hauled down as the monster jerked and bled.

Then they were suddenly facing a new menace, as if the waters of Drefast had not been polluted by the feline abomination already. This time it was in the form of a shark, but one with a skin like cracked rock, and eyes that glowed red like hot magma. It was black, which made the rows of long teeth shine whiter in the opened mouth. It went straight for the combat, attacking the Sea Cat, but finding that it was as unwelcome as Miran had been. It was shoved aside by a rude claw.

(OOC: 5 rounds of air left for Pio. Perhaps you could state your intentions for two more rounds, because I think two more should do it. That way I can update a bit more, and this battle will be over sooner. Beinsel and Percy should remember that they cannot see anything, and that the do not know if their brothers are alive or not.
And: Beinsel is drawing a bit of a crowd with his music. People are stopping on the bridge and near the docks to see what is going on. )

Doomsday... SUCKED!!! I can't remember the last time I turned a movie off... oh wait, it was something with cannibals and corny studentfilming...

*AARGH for supressed memories coming back*

anyway, we went to see the Incredible Hulk yesterday. It was entertaining, but not as satisfying as I hoped. The story was weak for a sequel. And YES, I know that this isn't a real sequel to the Ang Lee Hulk movie, but in a way it is, since they skip the whole part where Banner becomes the hulk, which was basically the center of Lee's version.

All in all the movie felt like a big build-up for another sequel to come. I can't say to much because I don't want to ruin the fun for other people. Let's say that I feel that nothing is really rounded up, which does not give the closing that normal movies have.

On a last note, the promised Cameo of Iron Man is nothing like what I had imagined when I heard about it.

Incredible Hulk is an entertaining enough movie to rent on DVD, but if I really knew what to expect I would've skipped it in theaters and saved my money to go see Kung Fu Panda or the Dark Knight.

Experts are wrong then. The casting time for Summon monster is 1 round. Look up Casting Time, on page 174 of your PHB, and it says:

A spell that takes 1 round to cast is a full-round action. It comes into effect just before the beginning of your turn in the round after you began casting the spell. You then act normally after the spell is completed.

Not much room for questioning there, spell description or not.

You do know that your shark comes on your NEXT turn, since casting time is 1 round. Then it gets its actions.

And underwater creatures will do well in this encounter, if they are salt or normal water, since it's just 4 rounds.

there is MUCH more available than those standard books and authors.

Be sure to check out:

I, Strahd - Ravenloft
Pages of Pain - Planescape
Netheril Trilogy - Forgotten Realms
(not so unstandard) the Doom Brigade & Siege of Mt Nevermind - pretty much the only Dragonlance stand alone novels that weren't too boring to me.

If you are willing to take a little side step from D&D, try the Hellboy novels. Yes, there are novels, and they are very enjoyable most of the time.

We saw In Bruges yesterday, a very interesting and unconventional sort of crime film, with Collin Farrell and two more well known actors (Gleeson and Fiennes).

The story is a bit simple, two Brittish hitmen are sent to Bruges to lay low after one of them was in an incident, but the way it is filmed, and the funny moments and gruesome ending make it like nothing you would normally expect from such a movie.

The two lead characters are likable and the performances are good.

For me personally it was very nice to see the kind of town Bruges is: very close to what towns look like in the Netherlands. So if that's the way to understand where I live, give it a go.

I would give it 4 out of 5 stars.

The Chakran Mts
15th day of the 8th month: Temoth Ore
7:30 pm

The sun was about ready to depart, and leave them into the hands of a long night. The companions had set their horses loose, but not completely abandoned them. Elessarae had spoken with Comrade, and for the first time since their meeting she had made a connection with the moonhorse that was so deep that for a few moments they completely understood each other.

“Comrade,” she said, “you can not go with us, we will be going where horses can not go, up the mountains and underground. I need you to obey me as you obey your mother. I need to know you will be safe.”

Comrade peered at her from under his long dark eyelashes. Then his thoughts reached her, and they were clear like her own.

“I will take my brothers and sisters back to the forest, and then to the first homes I find. But you must be careful. Bad things are surfacing beyond those mountains.”

With that he left them, followed by the other mounts.

The group now faced a steep walk over an old goat’s path. It was not the most difficult trail they had ever followed, hardened by weather and experience as they were. It made them recall memories of the encounter with Troshba the Manticore, but this time they reached the top of the mountain range safely.

Before them lay a dark valley, surrounded by peaks and ranges taller than the one they had climbed right now. The only vegetation that grew here were patches of grass, dry bushes, and sporadical trees. Down in the valley laid a small lake, black in the shadow of the mountains. In the distance they could see snow covered tops that eternally watched history unravel itself.
The thumping echo of drums reached their ears stronger here, and after peering over the mountains a few moments they perceived movement in the depth below them.

The mountain they had just mastered went down again fast on the other side, and up to higher peaks on their flanks. Going down was another path, only existent by forming flatter rocks and slightly smoothed surfaces to walk on. The path lead towards the valley, and ended on a grassy plateau, an even place in jagged surroundings. On the right side of the plateau was a deep drop that the companions could hardly see beyond. But they caught a glimpse there of a rocky bottom, with green dots moving about, like a swarm of ants. Occasionally a small speck of light would flicker, but as the shadows of night grew deeper, the scene was taken from their sight.

What were they to do? It was possible, likely even, that the activity in the depths were goblins. But were they looking for goblins? Or were they simply looking for a way into the old kingdom of the Chakrandrum? How would they ever find the entrance to the underground halls?

Thondrek can find a masterwork Waraxe WITH the stone in it for 2330 GP.

Masterwork only adds bonus to att, right?
Also added to sheet: 50' silk rope, Pitons (4?) and a Climber's Kit. Then you're money's about done. If you want feather fall scrolls it needs to be paid for with group money.

Brianna: Geim can find his 2 potions of Fly for 1500, 2x Cure Critical for 2200, and I don't know how much Antitoxin costs... I know Remove Disease is 750, but I don't think that's what you mean.
In any case, that is much more money than Geim has, so you'll have to make a choice.
On another note, he also cannot find a temple for Kharox there, for the Syls there do not worship him as do Khords.

Also: I took 3 Pearls from the group's cash to identify Wolf's items and for Elessarae using game terms IC to describe to her companions what the items do.
