Day Three, Newhouse Jail, Beylix, 10:46 am

“…Let me say that you couldn’t find a more…ah…dedicated lawman as a sheriff. You want coffee?”

Wyatt stepped inside the law office just in time to catch the last statement, his booted feet hitting the wood floor with heavy thuds. John, CC, and Sherm were already inside, and Wyatt’s previous apprehension about the three of them scootin’ off without proper protection—protection for the payment Sung was expecting upon their safe return—subsided, replaced by a swelling nervousness within his gut. This was, after all, a lawman’s domain, and Rocinante had been forced to run its share of illegal operations in its time.

Captain Sung threw a glance Sam’s way with brows coming together and thinned lips before scanning the room logging everything that could possibly be used as cover should a fight break out, ready melee weapons, or quick escape routes, waving off the offer for coffee. That’s when he noticed Andrew.

”Chou shen mao dai gu xiang.”

It took some doing to not allow the surprise he felt to register on deeply tanned face as their eyes locked. Andrew had been a relative of Eden’s…not just any relative either. Andrew had been Eden’s favorite. Wyatt had taken a liking to him as well in the short time they’d had the opportunity to converse before Andrew had kicked off planet. Once the shock dissipated at the sight of the sharply dressed man Wyatt felt awash with the harsh recognition of loss. After Eden and Summer’s deaths Wyatt had coped by turning to liquor and bar fights fueled by revenge. It hadn’t been an edifying experience and had very nearly cost him his life. Since then, waking hours consisted of a constant struggle not to allow himself to sink back into the depression and drink by throwing himself into the ship, crew, and whatever job they could muster. The captain had found that he needed to retire to his cabin only once he’d become so exhausted he’d fall right to sleep or else he’d find the dark shadows of his past creeping up on him through the bulkhead. The sight of Andrew Bowman and the all too familiar greeting released the demons en force, and with a vengeance Wyatt Sung could barely fight.

“Fate Gwai Ma Jeow, (threw in a monkey wrench) Sam ,” Wyatt muttered under his breath as he took a second to shore up against the onslaught of emotion he suddenly felt. Stepping away from the rest of the group towards the cell, he surprised even himself as he found a soft smile.

”Rung Tse Fwo Tzoo Bao Yo Wuo Muhn! (Merciful Buddha protect us!) If it ain’t Mr. Andrew Bowman,” Wyatt drawled easily enough stopping a couple of paces from the bars so as not to provoke a reaction from the lawman, the smile still on his face. Tilting the brim of his hat back to reveal his eyes and forehead, he glanced back at Sam. “This here’s one of the last people I’d ever expect to find in a ruttin’ jail cell, Sam. Andrew’s about the most honest Wong Ba Duhn I’ve ever met.

“Yer too Shwie (handsome) to be rottin’ away in this dump, Andrew. What’re they holdin’ you for?”

Day Three, Newhouse, Beylix, 10:30 am

Wyatt’s steely eyes devoured the scenery as they blew past it. Too much had transpired over the past few days that the captain was now suspicious of shadows. His right hand hung about the vicinity of his Colt, his brown coat out of the way. He didn’t say anything the whole of the trip, wrapped up in his solemn survey and cataloguing of possible danger as he was.

Gorram greenhorns!” Sung growled quietly as the three men leapt from the mule as soon as it slowed enough not to topple them. As soon as his boots hit the dirt, Wyatt was striding quickly after them, his gaze passing over the windows and rooftops of the buildings, the alleys, and the passerby’s. He hoped Wolf caught the drift and parked the mule near the post, then came in after, he knew Sam was right on his heels.

Captain Sung entered the sheriff’s office with more than a little trepidation. Rocinante wasn’t exactly on the cortex’s Most Wanted lists, but she wasn’t floating about the Black with a crew of saints either, and the Law never really did Wyatt any good to begin with, so he wasn’t about to trust them now. He wasn’t stupid, though, and he didn’t want any trouble, so as he entered the office, he let the jacket fall back over his hog leg, and instead chose to use his countenance bear the brunt of whatever they encountered as he met those in the room from beneath the brim of his lowered hat.

Fun memories...

OK, so with the reminder posted, what's the expectation? Are you posting an update to the game, Roger? Or are we to just start posting again?

Nevermind...I posted. I never realized that you'd left us with the opportunity to continue, Roger. Sorry.

Wyatt kicks his booted feet up onto the copilot's console and lowered the brim of his hat until his eyes were comfortably covered.

"Give us a smooth ride, Puhn Yo," he drawled to Sam, his outer countenance belying the thrill of being free in the 'Verse once again.

From one artist to another: great work! I love your shadow and color control.

Audalis is the resident gaming world here. There's a link right next to HOME on the nav bar at the top. We don't pay for the art as it is all volunteer work, but if you get an inkling we most certainly won't complain.

People’s Ward | Old Pen’s Stable | The City of Davnor | Sendria | Claise 24th, Viladay, 452ER, 01:42am | Cloudy, Snow-Covered, and Storming

The storm rocked the stable and caused no end of work for Old Pen, Ruthtundrel, and Tyrugyn in calming the horses whenever the thunder sounded, or the rafters creaked ominously as though the whole roof would cave in. After a few hours, Old Pen dropped heavily to the bale of hay across from Shiften and let loose a long sigh while rubbing his knees.

“I ‘ate nights like t‘night,” Old Pen declared wearily. “Kith-Jora be playin’ a nasty game wit’ me t’night, he is.”

The Commerce District | Andre Magnotta’s Estate | The Empire of Drannon | The City of Drefast | Claise 4th, Viladay, 452ER, 8:00pm | Abnormally Warm

Andre Magnotta visibly sank back into the lush cushions, a thoughtful expression on his face. He’d known Ethain since he was a boy, and though he felt the loss, the merchant was above all a practical man, and he knew that Caterina did not live a peaceful life. So, he turned his thoughts to the possibilities his gossipmongers provided, reviewing all that he knew in search of anything pertaining to that which his guest had mentioned. After a few minutes of silent contemplation, he slowly shook his head.

“My Lady, I am distraught at having to report no such name as coming across my ledgers,” Andre turned his bulging eyes towards the paladin. “But there are strange occurrences happening even in my world that could, perhaps, either be odd circumstance, or perhaps something more.

“Though I don’t deal in precious gems, I have some acquaintances that do, and there has been some amazed discussion surrounding the severe increase in the purchase of gemstones of late. It would seem that there are no gemstones left in any market, and the instant any hit the market, they are bought up. Oh, but the stones being purchased are only of the clear kind: diamonds, rubies, emeralds—adding to the mystery. Lapadists are thrilled, obviously, but more than one noble has been put out, and jewelers aren’t able to fill their orders.

“I’ve also heard that—and I apologize for this—the slave trade has increased in demand. Slaves are being bought up all over the realm, and then being marched into the wilderness. I’m afraid that since I don’t deal anywhere near that particular market there’s not much more I can relate there, but, perhaps in relation, stock animals are also being bought up, no expense spared. Oxen, draft horses, even elephants and other exotic animals capable of managing large loads, or displays of great strength. These, too, are being carted off into the wilderness.”

Andre shifted his great belly and twisted slightly in the cushion, his face turning red from the effort. “I’ve also heard that across the land, there’ve been a rash of contests and quests being offered up by rulers that have sent adventurers and champions alike running about like women during Festival. It is a veritable hornet’s nest of activity the realm over, and it has caused me no end of headache. I’m struggling to keep a compliment of guards on each caravan, these quests have got them with gold in their eyes.

“I’m surprised you’ve not heard of this, Donna Caterina,” Andre raised his bushy eyebrows. “It would seem that even our kingdom is not immune to this particular event, though what the specifics are I could not tell you. Many a young man has vacated their post in the city guard, riding caravan, or tending their familial duties to answer the clarion call. It is a sad event if you ask me, though people are talking of it as though it is sent by the gods and will result in great wealth for all who participate—I’ve even heard tell from some financiers that it could result in a shift of wealth—Alanus protect us from such evils.”
