“Information?” The Lady allowed a ghostly smile to touch her full lips. “I don’t pretend to be involved in the art of burglary. This is why We are hiring you, Sir. The only information I have to give has already been provided. This is Amer’Loc we are speaking of, and even a person such as myself—new to this land—can tell that it is a veritable fortress through the gates of which one only passes if they’ve an invitation, or are in chains. How you propose to get to the Catalyst is completely up to your discernment and best judgment. What the Catalyst is? Well, We’re confident that you’ll know it when you see it, but in case you do turn out to be too blind to tell, the necklace that you have just set yourself up to earn is endowed with a special enchantment that will warm it when within proximity to the Catalyst.”

The Lady Solan swung her legs from Old Pen’s lap and stood in such a manner as to cause Shiften’s mouth to momentarily dry despite his bravado.

“Our discussion has kept me from my guests, and at such a crucial time of the evening,” she lifted her skirts enough to show her dainty ankles—one of which bore a thin silver chain augmented by a series of seven set diamonds—and curtsied as a superior would to a lesser noble. “Good hunting, Shadowfriend.”

There was no pomp, no display of smoke and lights; she simply vanished, and Old Pen’s chuckle sounded against the storm raging outside. The man’s expression grew curious, however, and he cocked his head to one side as he peered at the doors.

“When d’ it start comin’ down?” he mused distractedly.

The king’s face softened as the request formed, and when Lloyd had finished posturing, Strongblade gave a brief nod of his head.

“These are trying times, and your behavior is not unlike that which I’ve found myself want to do for these past few hours, only for us men—those of us others look to in times of trouble—we cannot afford to lose our composure lest greater things become lost in the chaos that follows.

“Rise up, Lloyd, and accept the document. I’ll have a carriage fetch your Cynthia to our palace where she will be kept as a lady-in-waiting to the Duchess Veldego.”

King Strongblade placed the paper in the bounty hunter’s gloved hand as he rose. He met Lloyd’s gaze squarely as he continued.

“I’ve nothing to offer by way of leads, von Sctreider, though I wish that I did. We’ve whatever detail we can provide at your service during your investigation, for I wish nothing to be a hindrance. Where, and how, would you like to begin?”

As the king spoke, Lloyd heard the door open and the whispers of the captain speaking with someone just beyond, presumably to give orders to fetch Cynthia just as the king had promised.

Die Rolls:
Ensign Malton (Athletics [18]; Awareness/Notice [7])
Ensign Goodhart (Awareness/Notice [13])
Ensign Shral (Awareness/Notice Tricorder [23])
Ensign Pierce (Awareness/Notice [14])
Ensign Ral (Awareness/Notice [16]; Phaser Rifle [20])

There wasn’t any argument from Ensign Shral or Ensign Ral. Both men hunkered down behind the stalagmite-like columns that protected them from the wide open expanse of the ravine, their weapons at ready, but a look of trepidation on their faces. Ral Tarwin was a pilot, and though he’d been trained in such mission requirements as were required during a time of war, and those that being on board a ship requiring away missions would require, he knew he wasn’t nearly as prepared for such encounters as this presented as those from TAC and Security would be.

As Ensign Malton crept slowly forward, Curzon looked up and spoke through the comm. unit built into the suits. “The readings are stable. I believe they are emanating from the two foremost pinnacles at the edge of the precipice.”

That left Zackery Malton with the first challenge: descending the ten meters to the jutting plateau below. Slinging his rifle, Ensign Malton turned and lowered himself over the edge. Straining to position his suit so that he could peer down past his feet, he saw that there were two small boulders at the foot of the grade that could offer him some initial cover. It was a painstaking climb down, but one that he made without slipping, or faltering. By the time the ensign reached the bottom, his shoulder muscles burned from the exertion.

Positioned at the foot behind the two boulders, Zack took his phaser rifle in hand once more and checked its setting to make sure it was on the highest deliverable power rating, and the modulation was set to random (a little trick that Star Fleet had learned when dealing with the frequency-shifting personal shields of the Jem’Hadar). From his position, Zack could see straight out to the rocks Shral was referring to as emanating the energy signature. He could also see to the left (which was pretty much a few meters and then some of those teeth-like rocks before the plummeting edge of the precipice. To the right, however, Zack’s vision was blocked by a series of larger boulders some seven to eight meters away and about four to five meters high.

“Still no modulation,” Ensign Shral reported over the comm. link.

Those still atop the cliff peering down also had a fairly open view of the plateau, and despite the tension, they could find no reason as to why Zack shouldn’t proceed.

At a half crouch, Ensign Malton leveled his rifle and proceeded from behind the boulders, creeping out into the open, and sweeping the area with his weapon. He was about fifteen meters away from the cliff’s edge when Ensign Shral suddenly broke the silence.

“A new energy reading! To the east!”

Ensign Goodhart shifted his gaze past the boulders that had originally blocked Malton’s view of the east, and through the sights of his rifle, he spotted two gray-garbed Cardassian soldiers apparently having emerged from thin air. The positioning of the away team left Malton out in the open with no cover, Ensign Goodhart in the easternmost point, and it a prime position to open fire, Shral slightly to the southwest of him, Pierce further to the west, and Ensign Ral furthest to the west with no shot. Without moving, three of the four perched atop the cliff would have no shot. A quick—nearly subconscious—assessment of their position told Ensign Goodhart that those atop the cliff would still retain half to three-quarter cover, even if the other three shifted to his southeast, and manned the ridge.

For his part, Ensign Malton swiveled at the warning from Shral and spotted not one, but two, Cardassians creeping forward, leveling their weapons at him. He could run back to the cover of the boulders at the base while firing at the enemy, just full on sprint back to cover without returning fire, or not worry about finding cover and drop to one knee while opening fire.

Ensign Ral was quick to respond. Perhaps it had been due to his heightened sense of dread, or perhaps it was his pilot reflexes kicking in. Whatever the case, the man rolled on his heel and came up swiftly in a full run that took him around his companions and into position with his rifle leveled downward between two small columns atop a rather bulbous formation. The high-pitched whine of his rifle sounded and a flash of yellow phaser fire leapt from its mouth to strike the closest target in the leg. The Cardassian’s center of gravity shifted with the impact, and he toppled to the left, his legs swept out from underneath him. Though the body bounced once when it hit the hard surface of the rock, it lay still afterwards.

Topic: Voyages of Rocinante - Serenity/Firefly RPG
Subject: An invite t' trouble?

Wyatt didn’t like the fact that his crew was dispersing all over the ‘Verse, even if for a while. He felt protective of them. He felt like he should be wherever they were to protect them. He knew Asher was more than capable with just about any weapon, but the inexperienced young man was prone to get into trouble through his naivety in ways that his weapons couldn’t get him out of. That was what Wyatt wanted to protect him from…himself. Well, Wyatt figured it would be either Willow or himself that would be looking out for him—Sam’d likely cheer him on, bless his heart.

Still, the captain wasn’t a dictator, and these sure as hell weren’t his decisions to make for people, so as much as he disliked the idea, he could do nothing more than accept to the choices that first Kora had made, and now Asher as well.

With this in mind, Wyatt returned to Rocinante a little grumpier despite lining up so much credit he wouldn’t have to worry about finances for a bit. Of course, Trish’s reaction didn’t help. Sung stood by while Sam held her back, unwilling to comment, or to involve himself in that display of raw emotion. Once the pilot had deterred Ma from chasing after the stray, Wyatt turned his focus towards preparing for takeoff.

He was in the cockpit reviewing star charts on the navigation computer when Willow came bursting in with the delivery order claiming she was going to tend to Ma so he’d have to handle the deliveries himself. Not especially keen on that end of the business, and more than disgruntled over the way things had turned out thus far, Wyatt sullenly went about the task with more than enough mumbling to provide him with some minor satisfaction.

Even the Black didn’t relieve the depression that was filling the captain’s soul as he’d thought it would. If he’d had a rear viewport, he’d have been checking over his shoulder for signs of pursuing ships (the sensors weren’t enough). Due to his mood, Wyatt Sung was less than the perfect host. He wasn’t rude, but he wasn’t companionable. Unless otherwise necessary, Sung spent his time in the cockpit, or in his quarters. He had nothing to discuss with the passengers, and even less he wanted to observe. He kept his focus on the starcharts, the sensor readings, and the duty of getting his crew and their passengers from point A to point B, so that he wouldn’t have to ponder on things left behind too much.

When Asher’s waves came through he’d internalize them quietly, and then leave the rest of the crew to their banter, returning to duties and to mull over the reports from the young man. He didn’t like what he heard. Asher was supposed to just be watching, and doing his best to stay out of trouble. Instead, he was digging into rat’s nests from the sounds of it. But, again, Wyatt’s hands were tied.

At dinner that night, Sung was brought back to the harsh realities that his little piece of heaven could be perceived as something different as James reacted rather dramatically to Trish’s appearance. Sam’s quick reaction kept the man from experiencing Wyatt’s wrath at the indignation Trish had just endured. The whole time the man was gone (having been drawn off by Sam’s judicious actions), Wyatt sat very quietly, very still, watching the other passengers through narrowed eyes, daring them to step one iota out of line. Whatever had happened to James while they were away was enough to set the man straight, but it didn’t cull Sung’s mood at all. As the meal ended, Wyatt had decided that it didn’t need any further addressing, so he let the incident slide with whatever Sam and Wolf had done to turn James around.

Day one in the Black, Wyatt pulled Willow aside.

“Sam got a wire while you were enjoyin’ the company of the Tong,” Sung drawled as he leaned against the railing overlooking the empty cargo bay. The passenger’s were all lounging about in the designated safe portions of the ship—Wyatt had arranged for some of the ship to remain off limits in order to provide his crew with some semblance of privacy.

“He told me about it, but there weren’t no time on Regina to share the contents of it with you. Well,” Wyatt looked around affecting a bland expression that belied the tumultuous feelings inside. “Now there ain’t nothin’ but time. So…”

Scratching at the back of his neck, Wyatt took in Willow’s beautiful face in an effort to read her reaction as he relayed Sam’s news. “It would seem someone’s usin’ the Cortex to hunt you down, Willow. I don’t know who, and the wire didn’t reveal nothin’ either, but there was enough to it t’ concern me. I thought you should know.”

He didn’t feel he had to let her know that he’d do whatever he needed to do in order to help protect her. They’d been together on board Rocinante long enough that he felt they understood each other well enough to avoid such behavior. He allowed her time to respond, to elaborate, to share with him what she knew and what might come of this news, and then he retired to the cockpit where he was reluctantly drawn into laid back banter with Sam. Sam could do that…not many others could draw Wyatt out of his doom and gloom, but Sam’s casual sarcasm and irreverent way could.

Day two proved a test of Wolf’s skills. He proved himself not only capable, but quick, for which Wyatt was grateful. The remainder of the day went by blessedly uneventful, and Wyatt began to calm a little. There was something about the Black that set his mind at ease. He was unlike others—those who had traveled to the Edge and claimed that the site of pure black was maddening—Wyatt found it peaceful. Out there, he was closer to Summer and Eden than on any dirtball. Even his own home planet. Out in the Black, he was temporarily at peace.

Of course, all good things come to an end.

“Beylix,” Wyatt drawled as he stared out of the cockpit at the speck ahead of them. “Ain’t nothin’ worth nothin’ there.” Rising up from his seat, he gave Sam a pat on the shoulder. “Take us in…and try to make it somewhat smooth.”

Snatching up the mic he activated it. “Folks, this is your captain speakin’…” he paused long enough to eyeball any smart-alecky comment Sam might have made into silence. “Beylix is on the horizon. We’ll be dockin’ at about ten, so prepare yourselves.”

Everything went according to plan: boringly easy as far as Wyatt was concerned, and the docking procedure was so routine he nearly fell asleep. He had to remind himself that they had half the ‘Verse after them in order to start keeping a sharper eye out. It seemed that John Blake had the same sort of idea as he approached and asked for an escort.

Wyatt raised his brow and glanced at Sam before turning his attention back to Blake. “I suppose it wouldn’t hurt t’ protect the investment none. Strap on, Sam. We’re goin’ planetside.

“Wolf! That mule ready to go? Fire ‘er up!”

Now that they were on the mudball, Willow and Ma would know how to keep themselves busy until they returned.

Folks, the distibution of such books infringes upon the copyright laws of this country. WoTC have a right to control their revenue venues, so I'm afraid I am going to have to put a stop to this discussion on the Inn. This is to protect that which we all care about here, and to prevent any of you from finding yourselfes at the other end of a vindicative company's lawsuit so that they can make an example out of you.

Sorry to be the wet blanket, but thanks for not discussing such things on this site.

It's cool, Vanadia. I've been dealing with something pretty heavy and time consuming myself. So there's no real rush.

Sui, you didn't come across as anything to me...I try not to project onto the NPCs and instead try to develop their own responses based on the character traits I've selected for them. It's Lady S. you have to worry about!

Looking forward to the continuation though. Have to admit that this weekend will not include any posting from me due to what I'm working through right now, but next week we should be back on track.
