You mean the cliffs to the west with the rest of the thri-Kreen army, all cheering "Mantis! Mantis! Go Team Go!"?

About 40 to 60 feet high. Not sheer or anything. Think the cliffs on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City.

What is with all the requests for details? What happened to the go old days of "hey, we're wandering monsters! Let's fight!"?

Arien charges in pretty well all combat, so I think Raven was making an assumption.

The circles are trees, not boulders. Sorry, I know it is a crude and rude map.

A word of caution to your plan. Now I am the DM, reportedly evil although I deny the allegiations, so you don't have to take my advice here:

Only two of you are on horses (Talas and Arien). Two other horses are effectively removed from the party now that you are under attack (Dapple and Char's). I will have to check the sheets but unless Jals', Adrian, and Kilgrim's mounts are war trained, they are freaking out about now. You may have a hard time getting pass the Ankheg to run east.

Furthermore, you have four (so far) highly mobile enemies with missile weapons, that look like mantis and dropped in out of the sky. They can probably jump faster than you run.

The Boys are not combat trained and will be freaking out soon (very soon - like now).

btw - Bullrush is a 3e move, not 2e

Now I hate to say never but I would say there are a lot of challenges to face in running.

Subject: Card carrying members of the Wandering Monster Guild

“Arien, Kilgrim,” Talas spoke up, then, his hand closing on the hilt of his sword, “all is not right. I feel that danger yet lurks close to us; be on your guard all.”

Char agreed. “I say we ge’ goin’ den,” the ranger said, “moun’ up an’ ride t’ rockier groun’. We can take da lads wit’ us, bu’ we’d be safer where it be ‘arder t’ dig.”

Jal nodded an enthusiastic agreement to that; “And we should do so now,” he added, “the ankheg of which you speak are coming and are getting very close.”

"You are right, my friends. We must move, and now! Quickly! Boys, each of you share a saddle with one of us. We must leave this place now!"

The boys looked at each other in confusion. Char whistled for his mount just as it dawned upon Dapple that her mount was with Char’s horse and would not likely come with the summon.

Talas grips his sword in readiness. Adrian also has his bastard sword while Jal works the start of a spell into his mind. Kilgrim attempts to remount Grumpy but the warpony is having nothing to do with it and moves away from the cleric.

Then, the ground started to shake violently. Before you, directly in front of the party and not far from where the boys were hiding, something broke through the ground. An enormous many lagged worm with huge mandibles with a greenish shell protected its body, making it resemble an evil giant deadly shrimp. It towered eight feet out of the hole as it broke though the ground. As it did, another came out behind the party as well, cutting off Northwind’s return to its master. A third one came out to the left of the group, and the ground on the right began to cave in as well.

You are surrounded.

Jal cried out “Above! Look above!”

Arien brushed something out of the air with his shield. It shattered against the metal, as mantis like warriors began to land on the ground; about 20 feet back from the ankhegs. They all wore strange ornate armour and their four arms were clutching trianglar wedges similar to what Arien had just avoided. On their backs were viscous double bladed polearms like you had never seen before.

The Knight didn’t think, he moved on instinct, putting himself between insects and the boys. He cried out in a challenging voice, “I’ll not let you have these innocents, foul beasts! For Honour!” and with that he called out the command that ignited his sword into flames.

OOC: Welcome to combat. You are facing three ankhegs all within ten feet of you, and so far there are four Thri-Kreen warriors, at least 30 feet back with missile weapons in hands. You are not surprised (at least combat wise) and you know another ankheg will be up soon.

I will post a crude map of positions, but most of you are clustered around teh boys, Char is between mantis warriors and Ankhegs. Dapple, who never came out of the trees is actually behind the Thri-Kreen.

Please give me combat actions with main attack plan, and then the back up plan if something goes wrong.

Char, you loaded your bow before combat so you will have three attacks this round only.

Let's get buggy!

Subject: Silver Screen II - Dalmer, Wind and Kidd and the Dead

Captain Jeremy Dalmer was covered with blood spatter. At one point in his life, he would have realized that he had gone too far in punishing one of his own soldiers, but not anymore. Those days were gone – gone like his left arm. Removed between shoulder and elbow by the axe of a Sueli warrior, Dalmer was sure that he would have died that day, but he didn’t. Instead, he was nursed back to health and given a gift by the emperor – an oversized green scaled arm with six fingers. At first it had its merits; a greater strength, power to effect things at distances and near invulnerability to most weapons. But whatever belonged to the arm was still around, fighting for dominance in him. A compromise was reached between him and it – but a compromise with a demon was no compromise at all. He allowed himself to become more like the demon, and the demon became more like itself. Now Siener was dead and Dalmer had no regrets or sorrow. In fact, he was feeling more aroused than anything.

He accepted a towel handed to him by his bodyguard Boris to wipe his hands and face. Boris was a good man, loyal, true and unquestioning. He could command Boris to kill every soldier in his command and Boris would only nod and do the job. Blue guards were not bred for their insight, just brute strength and mindless loyalty.

“The commanders await you Captain.” Boris told him.

“Excellent.” Dalmer said happily, “Their timing is excellent. You may let them in.”

Boris nodded with comment and left the room. Soon he entered again with the two women commanders. One was tall, with long white hair, wearing the imperial uniform with the Red Corp insignia. Commander Kidd’s holy symbol of Wee Jas prominent as an amulet over her jacket announced her as a cleric. Her eyes briefly looked upon the crushed and beaten body behind the commander then moved away quickly to the proper “eyes front“stance.

Beside her was another woman wearing a similar uniform. She had black hair and emerald eyes, shorter by a head. Around her throat was a black collar and her left cheek was marred by a brand of a broken chalice. Commander Wind bore the marks of treason within the Red Corp. – a sign that her powers as a mage were more valued than the traditional punishment for betrayal. She did not look at the corpse at all, but stared vacantly forward.

“Well?” Dalmer asked.

“We collared the woman as you requested. It was harder than we expected – she put up quite a fight. After that, she was put into the room and ordered to grasp the sword. At which point she seem to fall into the slumber we expected.” Kidd reported.

“Excellent!” The Captain said, drumming his fingers together happily. “Most excellent.”

“Sir, I am concerned. The power of the entity within is dangerous. We are playing with something that I am not sure the collar will contain.”

“Yes, yes, yes. You have spoken your doubts before. Duly noted but I am told that the precautions we have taken will be adequate.” Dalmer waved at her dismissively, “I would think that faith would be a skill you’d have in abundance."

“Very well Captain.” Kidd said simply, knowing there was no hope of making him see reason.

“Commander Wind.” Dalmer snapped and the dark haired lady turned her stare to him. “Before your indiscretion, you were working on a project of some sort. Making dead soldiers useful again? Re-animation or some such magic?”

“Yes, my master.” She answered dully. “By mixing tree sap with the essences of …”

“Yes, yes, yes … I don’t need the dissertation. Do you have the formula? Could you recreate it?”

“Yes, my master. I have several vials of it prepared.”

“Excellent! Boris! Take Seiner and Deke to the Red’s quarters then. See if they can make them useful to us again.”

“Yes, my master.” Wind intoned.

Boris looked at the body on the ground and back to the Captain with a questioning look.

“Roll him up in the rug Boris.” Dalmer said patiently. “Gather up the pieces and roll him up.”

Thank you all for the wonderful posts and reactions to this game. It makes me quite happy to see such enjoyment of a game I am creating.

I don't believe in characters living in a vaccuum, so using PM's I have been feeding some of you with information that your character would know, or feelings they may have about situations. Now I can and do make mistakes so if you think your character should know something, or want to make a "perception roll" - feel free to ask via PM or email.

The sudden appearance of the mages and Talas threw the boys into a panic. They stopped fighting one another and tried to make a fast retreat. Then Char and Dapple appeared out of the forest behind them and they realized they were trapped. The authoritative voice of Arien brought them back to reality.

"What's all this, then?" he bellowed from atop his warhorse. Drawing on every bit of his upbringing as a noble, Arien sat tall and assumed a commanding demeanor. "Are you trying to call down every real brigand from the here empire's borders?"

“You see,” Jal said, offering a strange grin to the knight and gesturing to the tumultuous knot of youths, “there is no desire to live the bandit life here.”

Boys," the knight spoke sternly," do you have any idea how much trouble you are in? You thought to rob my friend and I," he indicated Kilgim. "The two of us would have been more than your match, and you never saw our other five friends. If we were other travelers, the crows would be picking your bones now... and if Freegate's patrols caught you, they would hang you for banditry."

He let his voice soften... "Now, what's this about your father? I can see you boys are not real criminals. What has brought you to this point?"

Whether the father of the boys used a similar tone or not, the boys quickly stopped panicking and quickly formed a line from tallest to shortest – with the youngest one even going as far as standing at attention with a salute. The Oldest stepped forward and bowed properly, “Sir, I am Philip. This is Steward, Darryl and Thomas.”

“Better tell him the truth Phil. Paladins can read your mind.” Thom advised his brother

“Shut up Thom. Let me talk.”

“They can see into your soul.”

“Thom!”

“Sorry,” The youngest looked around at the party, still in salute. He spotted Talas and looked up at him, “Are you a giant? Or a half giant? Dad said ogres are really ugly and you aren’t so I bet you are a giant.”

Darryl reached over and smucked Thom gently on the head, “Thom. Let Phil talk.”

“Sorry.”

Aye ye lads. Tell us what this is all 'bout. What's this 'bout yer daddy bein' killed by somethin' an' why would ye want t' die becuse o' it?" Through a not so graceful series of movements, Kilgim got down from Grumpy's back and dropped on the ground accompanied by nice chings and clings.

Adrian came up to the boys with their weapons in hand, “You should never drop your weapon." he spoke as he handed them back to the kids, one at a time, hilt first. "In this world you cannot trust strangers enough to relinquish your only defense. You could be playing into the hands of a spy, a fake, or worse... authorities."

“Thank you sirs.” Phil answered again with the bow. “We, that is us, well, and our dad used to be farmers, on a stretch of land not far from here. Our mom as well, but she died two years ago of a fever. Last week, we were doing our chores like always when the ground started to shake. Then these huge … giant really … bugs came out of the ground.”

“They were green and big. They looked like worms with green shells. We saw at least 3 of them.” Steward added.

“We ran to the house and Dad told us to hide in the forest. As he was gathering up stuff, the bugs spit something on the walls that made them melt away. Then …” Phil stops as his eyes tear up.

Steward continues, “One of the bugs bit Dad in half.” Thom breaks down into tears, and Darryl reaches over to hold him in comfort.

“We panicked and ran. We have been on our own ever since. We haven’t had much to eat and we haven’t been able to hunt much, seems like much of the game has fled these parts. I won’t lie to you sir, we were thinking of stealing or robbing but I didn’t know what else to do. There is food and provisions at home, but we’re scared to go home because of the bugs.”

“We haven’t even buried Dad.” Steward says.

“Tell them about the other bugs.” Thom piped in.

The three brothers sighed heavily, “Thom, there were no other bugs.”

“Yes there were! I saw one riding the big ones. Looked like a giant grasshopper, or preying mantis … or locust.” Thom said, holding his arms up to describe the size. He points at Talas, “Like him only not as big.” Thom looks up at Arien with eyes filled with hope and faith, “But you are here now! That’s why you’ve come isn’t it? To slay the evil bugs? That’s what Paladins and their squires do! Save people in holy quest type thingies.”

Alacrity Fitzhugh is a character in a series of books by Brian Daley. I "stole" the name for a half elven Ranger I played for awhile. I am not into being a player so I decide to play Alacrity completely insane. I figured if I couldn't be in control as the DM, I would wrestle control from him with my character. So in a simple murder mystery module, I had Alacrity accusing people of being the killer, stealing horses and leaving them around town, and spreading rumours that I was the leader of a vast anti-slavery organization, come to free the people. Not that there were any slaves.

Anyway, Alacrity is the complete opposite of me in real life, so if I am gonna have an alternate persona - I would like it to be a wild and crazy guy - Alacrity.

Topic: Continuing Where We Last Left Off
Subject: Strangers and the Knight?

No doubt, the members of this group were from various backgrounds and it reflected in how they viewed this moral dilemma. But whether they agreed or not, a simple plan was formed to face these would be bandits and perhaps lead them astray from the banditry they had chosen. Char and Dapple rode off ahead, and then took their mounts off the main roads to sneak behind the hiding spot of the young men. It had been awhile since Dapple had tried to move silently through anything but a city street, with every branch and critter hidden seemed to conspire against her. But eventually the rogue found her stride and they moved quietly into position. The bandits were easily found by following the voice of “Phil, I’m hungry”.

Dapple’s eyes were made for dark places such as this, as the legacy of her elven heritage adjusted to the difference in light. Infravison, some called it, the only usefully thing her elven blood gave her as far as Dapple was concerned. The four men in hiding, if men they could be called, were definitely brothers - the resemblance was that clear.

Talas, Adrian and Jal hid themselves from view by the use of a Invisibility 10’radius cast by Spellbinder. Ready to spring the trap awaiting them, Arien and Kilgim rode outside the spell’s effect. Sunset took to the sky, not wanting to get in the way if combat were to happen.

In the sanctuary of their hiding spot, the four men stirred. “Phil? Someone is coming.”

“I see. Okay, remember the plan. Keep your cloaks up and look menacing. I’ll do the talking. That means be quiet Thom.”

“Wait, Phil! Look! It’s a Paladin! It’s a blessed Paladin and his squire.”

“Phil looked out, “We don’t know he’s a Paladin. Could be a guy wearing armour, out for a stroll with his dwarven friend.”

Thom wasn’t buying it, “It’s a Paladin! Look! Shiny! Maybe the League sent him. He’s with a dwarf.!’

Phil lost it, “Thom! You are gonna kill all of us. We couldn’t kill the duck. We couldn’t eat the rabbit. Now we can’t rob the guy because he’s wearing armour!”

“Umm Phil,” one of the other said, “That knight is has a sword, and a lance, and the dwarf looks like he’s carrying an armoury.”

“What else can we do? There are only two of them.”

Char and Dapple watched as the three brothers argue it out and missed that Thom had slipped out of the hiding spot.

“Where’s Thom?”

Phil looked around, “Oh crap!”

Arien and Kilgim were trying hard not to notice the shouting coming from the copse of trees ahead. If this was an ambush, they would have been armed and ready without the addition notice. Suddenly, out of the trees burst a young man, human of maybe 14 summers. He came out running, waving his hands in the air. “Sir! Sir! Mister Paladin! Woohoo! Help! We need help!”

There was a brief moment as the knight and cleric exchanged glances. Then three more men came out, all of ascending age but all quite young. They called to their brother and gave chase. Then they stopped, as if realizing that they had swords in their hands, which they quickly and carelessly throw away to run after their brother.

“Sir Paladin! Our family needs help! My father was killed by …”

The brothers tackled the young one. Pushing and shoving each other in the middle of the roadway, the party comes right up to them as they fall over, punching, kicking and generally attacking each other while shouting at each other.

“Toadhead!”

“Idiot!”

“Barfbrain!”

“I’m in charge!”

“You’re a stupidhead!”

“Sir Paladin! My dad!”

“Shut up Thom!”

“Dad liked me better.”

“Jerk!”

OOC: Your move. The threat is ... minimal.
