Subject: Uh-oh....pretty crystals!

Artanis had mistakenly assumed the dire wolf before her was wounded enough to be out of commission. She quickly, and quite painfully saw that was far from the case. The beast had managed to swipe at her foot, causing her to fall, and clamped its jaws around her shoulder, biting hard and deep. Artanis gritted her teeth together, and barely more than a loud grunt sounded as she shook the beast off.

Artanis took a quick look in Talus' direction. She saw he had also been bitten by one of the wolves. A sense of anxious dread grew inside Artanis as she saw the peril Talus was in. She wanted to be rid of this dire wolf so she could help her new friend.

Then she noticed the lycan leader chanting something. She quickly jumped to her feet, and once again held her sheild firmly before her. As such, when the beast lunged for her, she was able to deflect it's attack, effectively shoving the wolf aside once again. However, the shield's protection had a price. Two of the crystals on the shield lit up when the wolf's body made contact with its smooth surface. Artanis knew she would soon have to discard the shield, leaving herself quite vulnerable. As a precaution, however, she yelled out, "The shield has begun to charge! Two crystals are lit, only 6 remain!"

Even as she yelled her warning, Artanis sliced at the wolf, and felt the impact as the blade hit the wolf's body. A look of surprise crossed Artanis features when she saw the creature was unharmed by the contact made with her sword. She knew her weapon was not so dull as to cause no damage.

Stumbling a few steps backward, Artanis glanced at the lycan leader again, then quickly looked back at her assalant. "Could it be that foul creature cast a spell that allows these beasts to resists attacks?"

Such was her thought as she decided to test her theory and swung her sword toward the great beast again, her blade slicing through the air. She wanted to see if her blade would do any damage this time. If not, she hoped Elesia's wand had enough magic in it to fry all the wolves, because if she were right, and if that spell lasted long enough, they were all in big trouble.

OOOooh....I should have known that. I'm sorry! Now don't I feel stupid...*sighs* When I saw -18hp I automatically assumed the would had -18hp left....*rolls eyes* I don't know why I assumed that considering I've never assumed that before! Sorry....

So, tell me, should I still edit my post???

ok, I've edited my post slightly...I'd asked someone if -18 meant something was dead. I was assured it was dead. That is why I posted as I did. (I wanted to ask Ginafae, or Kaelyn but ya'll weren't online at the time, so I had to ask someone else) At any rate, I hope my edit works. If not, let me know....

U know me, I don't usually post past a specific action until I know the outcome of said action....so I reeally hope this one works. If not, i could be in trouble. O.O (Surprised? Not really...)

Besides, how can the wolf be "far from dead" if it has (NEGATIVE) -18 hp?? How exactly does that work? I mean, 'cause even if it is not dead, I don't see how it could do much of anything....so .. any help on understanding that would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Suddenly the entire pack moved as one, and the wolves attacked. One second Bart was taken down, but before Artanis could react she had her own attacker to deal with. The large wolf lunged at her, and by the grace of the gods, she shielded her body from the attacking beast. She was able to shove its body aside, just before she swung her sword in a lethal arc, sinking its blade into the wolf's flesh. Wanting to be sure this beast was dead, Artanis quickly swung her blade at the animal's neck in an attempt to sever its head from its body.

Even as she fought her own attacker, Artanis took note that Talus, rather than dispose of the wolf at hand, let fly a blast at the lycan leader.

--

Artanis heard the Lycan's words to Talus:

“You who cavort with demons, The Dark Mother can use those of your talents, cease your futile attempts to deny what you are, and join us, and you shall be rewarded a thousand times more than you could ever hope to achieve in this lifetime.”

Not entirely sure what the lycan was going on about, Artanis had no time to stop and consider his words. She never took her eyes from the injured wolf as she spoke:

"His talents are not available to you, or this "Dark Mother" of yours. He has teamed up with us, and just so happens we are on the good side of this fight. So you can't have him!"

Artanis strained to see what she could of just what was lurking beyond the edge of the clearing. Her eyes were unable to tell her much of anything. Apparently Talus spotted something, however, because he suddenly shot off an arcane blast. Artanis spun around to see what he'd shot at. Not seeing anything, Artanis quickly moved to where Talus stood. "What did yo..."

Her words were forgotten when she heard a noise. She looked up to see several wolves all around the clearing, stepping out from the covering of the trees surrounding them. Then, just in front of her, she saw two much larger wolves, and a ... a lycan?, step forth. The apparent leader addressed the group:

“You have intruded upon our hunting grounds, and attacked my kin without provocation. Once more your arrogance will cost you your lives, and we will have our sacrifice for the glory of nightfall and mother.”

He went on to say they could run for their lives, and they would hunt them down, but only after the wolves had devoured their mounts.

“I have a counter-offer. We will hunt the hunter, and spirit his mange-eaten soul to his Dark Goddess. And we will do so for all those he has killed, and because the Moon belongs to us.”

Artanis grinned as Aelistae uttered her words. "Haha. You tell him how it is. He simply doesn't know who he's dealing with." Such were Artanis' thoughts. Then Linnix began spouting off about fairies? Artanis had no idea what on earth the girl was refering to, but once she'd finished making no sense at all, Linnix fired an arrow at the master of the wolf pack. This was soon followed by another blast from Talus.

"Well, I guess it's on now!" Artanis said to no one in particular as she prepared for the attack that would surely come next.

"Just the woman I was hoping to see!"

Artanis looked up, slightly startled. She recognized the woman, and the child in her arms. Artanis smiled. She listened to the woman and nodded. "I am only happy your child is safe." she says quietly.

Almost before Artanis was finished with her sentence, the woman shoved the child into her arms, telling her to wait a moment. With a puzzled look on her face, Artanis looked down at Maribelle. She smiled softly at the child and cradled her, almost lovingly. She felt a pull at her heart, and suddenly found it difficult to breath. She looked up, ready to give the child back to her mother. It was almost too painful. She didn't see the woman, and looked back down into the child's face.

"How cruel fate is." she thought. "That they should take Dareus from me, only to have me save another woman's child from the same fate...." she could not finish the thought. Not even in her own head. Artanis was happy the child was safe, and she knew that is what mattered now. Still, the void inside her was ever present.

“Hey, get away from that, leave what’s not….”

Artanis' head snapped up. She saw the woman dragging what appeared to be some sort of trunk or chest over, and she turned to see who had spoken. Her pain and memories were once again supressed and locked away.

"Talus! It's ok, she's..." she just looked up at him with a raised eyebrow, and a slightly amused smile, as he stammered out that he had made a mistaken assumption.

The woman moved foward to take her baby back, and Artanis was presented with a large chest. She looked up at the woman curiously. "Wha...?"

"Go on, open it."

Artanis arched an eyebrow, not sure what to think. She reached forward and slowly lifted the lid of the trunk. The lid slipped from Artanis' hand and fell back, as she saw what lay within the box.

There in the chest, lay an exquisite set of weapons and armor. She looked up at the woman in surprise, almost hopeful, but not daring to ask. The woman spoke of her ex-husband having been a soldier, of the armor being that of a hero, and of her (Artanis) being deserving of such beautiful armor. Artanis knew all too well she was no hero. With her hand pressed over her heart, the other hand raised toward the woman, as if to fend her off, she began to protest. Before the first word could leave her lips, however, the woman's next words cut her off...

"..You would honor me by taking these as a token of my appreciation for all you have done for me and my daughter.”

Artanis looked from the woman, to Talus, then to the armor within the chest. She dropped her arms in resigned compliance. She nodded, a broken, "Thank you." upon her lips. She just sat and looked in awe at the items this woman had just given her. She felt so undeserving of such fine gifts. Yet she knew she would have given everything she had ever owned had the same been done for her the night her life had been changed forever. And she would not have taken "No" for an answer.

Artanis stood and hugged the woman close, but gently as she still held her child. She whispered softly in her ear, "Take care of your daughter. Cherish her. You have been given a second chance with your child, one that not everyone gets."

With that she released the woman and retrieved the items from the chest. She listened silently as Talus presented the woman with his gift to her. She was moved by his gesture, and smiled softly.

"It's always so amazing to see the kindness and generosity living beings can have for eachother in the face of tragedy." She thought before removing her old armor. She accepted any assistance Talus offered in donning the new armor.

((There will be a possible edit to this portion of my post once I receive a response from Kaelyn to a couple questions.))

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Too much of the morning having passed by the time the group got on the road, they road hard and fast stopping very sporattically along the way. Finally, Bart called the small onterauge of travelers to a halt, and decided they would make camp.

Artanis dismounted. She rubbed her backside in an attempt to restore feeling to that portion of her body. She then took great care in tending to her horse. She brushed it thuroughly, while it ate and drank. After her horse was properly tended, Artanis set about preparing for the night ahead.

Once she was finished, Artanis aproached Talus. She spoke softly, "I just wanted to let you know I think that was a very good thing you did back in town, giving that woman the money like you did. You're a good man, Talus."

Later, as they were preparing to bed down for the night, it seemed they were on sudden alert. A strange array of howls sounded for a moment, only to be sileneced by one dominant howl. The leader, perhaps, of what could only be assumed was a pack of ... what? Wolves?

Artanis moved to the center of the camp, near the fire, her new sword ready in one hand, her shield held before her in the other.She stood with her back to the fire, her eyes straining to see anything beyond the circle of the camp. Aelistae suddenly yelled for all to stay close to the fire and to avoid being bitten by these creatures.

Then suddenly all was earily silent. Like the calm before the storm that was to come. One thought flashed briefly in Artanis' mind.

"Bring it on."

I chose my avatar 'cause it was the closest I could find to look like DarkAutumn. Not to mention that at the time DarkAutumn was kinda Queen Mayhem, Queen of the Amazons. It was so silly. I can't even remember the names everyone had...Elendriel, Rae, and a few others were part of the Amazon clan.

Anyway, I found this pic, and another one. This one represents Princess Mayhem. I have another that represents her when she became Queen Mayhem.

At any rate, I've submitted another pic which a friend drew for me that is unique and solely made for DarkAutumn. If it ever gets approved, then I will use that as my new and improved, (and permanent) Avatar. Until then, This one will do.

(backpost to the convo with Aelistae)
Listening to the drow’s words, Artanis nodded, and spoke softly in response, “I think your words do make sense, Aelistae. It has been many years since I’ve had anyone close enough that I could call a friend. Since being joined with this group, however, I’d like to think of you, and the others, as my friends.”

(Back inside)

After Artanis finished the sad tale of the previous night’s events, she was shocked and appalled at the words she heard next. She looked at Linnix with wide, disapproving eyes, and shook her head.

“How can you be so cold, Linnix? I know you had your differences with Kas, but she and Loriel were both part of this group. And while you may not have been close to either of them, I would have hoped you would have enough of a heart, and simple fellow-being compassion enough to at least feel something at the needlessness of their deaths!” She took a breath to say more, but instead exhaled slowly and held her mouth shut, with great effort.

--

Bart informed them it would be time to meet in an hour at the site of the ashes. Seeing as how she was already packed up and ready to go, Artanis stood, grabbed her pack, and exited the establishment.

As she approached the site, Artanis saw all the items the town’s people had left. Her eyes filled with tears yet again, and she slowly sank to her knees. She had nothing to give but her tears. “Kas, Loriel, I’m so sorry. If there were some way I could…..I’m so sorry.”

Artanis sat quietly, waiting for Xaris’ arrival. She tried to figure out just how they would break the news of last night’s events to the others. She nodded to Bart and Elesia, in acknowledgment of their arrival at the table.

She looked curiously at Elesia wondering at her mention of it not being a good morrow. Tears sprang to Artanis’ eyes at the sight of the wolf. Artanis knelt beside the wolf and hugged her gently, whispering softly in her ear. Then Bart asked where Loriel was, and Elesia replied:

“That is a tale not for me to tell, though the end of the story is clear to me.”

And so it was that Elesia looked at Artanis expectantly, waiting for her to let the group know what had happened. She looked down trying to find the right words, but before she could, Xaris was there. He told everyone that Kas and Loriel had died the night before. So blunt. “Xaris!” She couldn’t believe he’d said it in such a way.

Aelistae left the room, the tears flowing freely. With another reproachful look at Xaris, Artanis rose and quickly followed Aelistae. Once she caught up with her, she gently laid her hand on Aelistae’s shoulder, “Are you ok?”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After making sure Aelistae was ok, Artanis returned to the Inn and the group. She was about as ready as she could be to tell them what had happened.
“After Aelistae and Linnix went to bed for the evening, a woman came bursting in here yelling about a fire. Said her baby and cat were still inside the burning house. So Kas, Loriel, and I ran to see what we could do to help. There were many small fire elementals, but up in the attic was a man who seemed to have control of the elementals. He was shrouded in a sort of blue fire. The elementals called him Jethro. He had the child in his arms. The thing is, by the time we’d gotten that far, the entire house was a blazing inferno. The only way out of the house was through the attic window. I was going to tackle the man and try to grab the child. Loriel must have understood my intentions and jumped at his feet. She got to him before I did, and knocked him down. In the process he threw the child into the air. I was able to catch the child, and jumped through the window, and we rolled off the roof.” Taking a breath and looked at Talus, she continued, “Talus here pulled the child and me away from the heat of the flames, and Xaris was ready with healing potions.. but I’m afraid….well, I don’t know what happened once I left the attic, but Kas and Loriel did not make it out before the house collapsed in on itself. It was another hour or two before the fire finally burned out.” Her voice cracking slightly…she cleared her throat and blinked back the tears, “There was nothing we could do.”
A knock at the door jolted Artanis awake. She sat up straight in bed breathing heavily and looking around curiously. Within seconds her surroundings became familiar to her. Hand over her heart, she took a deep breath and slowly exhaled. What a dream that was!” She said to the empty room.
She quickly washed up, using the water in the wash basin. She hoped she would have enough time for one more bath before they set out on the road. “Who knows when we’ll have another chance for a bath.” She thought aloud to herself.
Looking in the mirror she smiled a bit. Her hair was growing back evenly, “Thank the gods for that…” But it was still much too short for her liking. With a resigned sigh, she pulled her “beanie cap” (don’t know what else to call it) over her head, nodded at her reflection, and with her few meager items collected, she headed downstairs.
Turning the corner as she stepped off the last stair, Artanis’ hand flew to her mouth in an attempt to stifle a laugh. There at the bar sat Talus clumsily attempting to put his boots on. She cleared her throat and smiled as she made her way toward him.
“Goodmorning, Sir Talus. Did you sleep well?” She sat on a stool next to Talus and ordered a hearty breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes (if they had such things back then), and a large glass of OJ. She knew there was no telling when they would again eat quite so well. She also ordered some fruits and nuts, which she packed away in her bag for later.
Once her meal was ordered, she saw the empty plates on the bar where Talus sat. With a chuckle in her voice she said, “You must have been pretty hungry to have inhaled that fo…” Then she noticed Talus had a strange look on his face. She looked in the direction he was looking in, and grinned.
“I suppose you’re wondering how a Drow can be here without a fight.” She nodded in the direction of the dark-skinned one. “That’s Aelistae, and the woman with her is Linnix. They are two of our traveling companions. You’ll find that Aelistae, though Drow, is of no threat to anyone, save those who may try to harm her or her friends.” With that, Artanis clapped Talus on the back and stood.
She retrieved her bag, grabbed her plates from the bar. With a slight jerk of her head in her friends’ direction, she smiled at Talus. “Come, my friend. I’ll introduce you to them. You’ll see there is nothing to fear.” And so she made her way to the table where her friends sat.
“Good morning, Aelistae, Linnix.” (If he joined them) “This is Talus. He was of some assistance to us last night, while you two were sleeping." There was a hint of sadness, but also a note of teasing in her voice. Then she grew serious, "He has requested to join our group. Xaris and I agreed that would be fine, but told him we would ask you two first before making any final decisions on the matter. And before you say no, first hear how he was of assistance to us. I am certain you will agree to his joining us then.” She took a deep breath, sadness and pain clearly visible on her face. “Have you seen Xaris yet this morning? As soon as he joins us, we will tell you of last night’s events.”
Artanis dug into her food then, in an attempt to hide feeling of loss she was sure was written all over her face. Tilting her head further downward than necessary to hide the fact that she had to blink rapidly to hold back the tears that suddenly sprang forth.
(Just for the record, “dug in” doesn’t mean she’s eating like a barbarian. Just simply that she is eating with a healthy female gusto. )
Artanis leaned back in her chair, slowly sipping her drink and watched as Talus spoke with the Innkeeper. She couldn’t help but wonder where he had been traveling from, and where he’d been headed before he happened upon the fire, and ultimately decided he would like to join their group.
Her thoughts were interrupted, and her eyes fell upon Xaris’ face. She smiled softly as he spoke, “I know how it feels, being the only one left. I’ve been through the same situation. You did good today saving that child. If you stayed back, you would of died too….”
Her voice laced with sadness, she responded, “Thank you, Xaris. I knew I had to get the child out of there, but I only wish I had been able to help Kas and Loriel. May their souls now be at peace.” With that she lifted her mug in salute to the fallen, and took a slow drink.
Movement off to the side caught her attention and she shifted her eyes from Xaris to see what it had been. She saw Talus making his way to what she could only assume was his room for the night. He gestured to let her know he was going to crash for the night, and she nodded in his direction. She considered, and dismissed, the idea of speaking with him now. It was nothing so important it could not wait for morning. They were all exhausted and certainly needed their rest.
That thought in mind, Artanis finished off the rest of her drink and stood. She clapped Xaris on his shoulder. “Goodnight my friend. I’ll see you in the morning, and when the others are all up, we will tell them the sad news together.”
She didn’t think that either of them should have to explain what had happened alone. She hoped they could be a source of support for each other when it was time to convey the happenings of the night before. And so, with a saddened sigh, she made her way to her room. She was asleep before her head was fully settled on the pillow.
Duh! Haven't you seen the new Dr. Suess Movie?!
You must never put sticky tape on hairy places because there are colonies of microscopic people living in each hair. Therefore, every time you place the sticky tape on hairy places it will potentially suffocate an entire world of little people, too small for the human eye to see. And though they are microscopic in size, and therefore can't be seen, they do still exist. And in the wise words of Horton the giant elephant in the sky:
"A person's a person, no matter how small."
Why was that kangaroo so snotty and mean anyway?
