The Web of Worlds

The theory of dimensions other than ours existing is ,to many, absurd. People who believe they exist have made many guesses as to what these alternate realities would be like. Some believe that for every important event, a new universe is formed. Some believe that it happens every second. Some even believe that the alternate realities would be so so abstract that we wouldn't even be able to comprehend them. Some believed it so much that they were willing to try and find out for themselves.

In the modern era, a group of four brilliant minds wished to find an answer to the question that had plagued them for so long. Five years had passed and they had made little to no progress. Believing that it was a waste of the taxes they payed, the public put pressure on the government to cut the funding for the project. With an election pending and the majority of votes on the line, the govenrment shut down the project.

They, however, underestimated the curiosity of those involved in it. Disregarding their orders to stop their research they continued, getting their funding from their own pockets. Despite their determination, progress went slowly and they were running out of money. It wasn't until another year when they reached their breakthrough.
No one expected what happened next. Perhaps it was a miscalculation, or the device was not stable enough with their limited funds. Or maybe the energies they used where too powerful for them to control. Their laboratory exploded with the scale of a nuclear explosion. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed, and many more wounded.

The frightening part was, surprising not the explosion. With the city of Tidral now in ruin, the majority of its citizens left spreading themselves around the country. What they didn't realize until months later was the lingering effect of the research. Everyone from Tidral, who had been exposed to the energy from the explosion had been changed. They had all gained a second psyche. Many of the citizens had been given improved physical strength and dexterity. Many of them had also been gifted with supernatural abilities, attributed by many as magic.

Some even tell tales of monsters roaming the street.

Game Mechanics
-3.5 DnD
-Takes place in a modern world, not modern earth though.
-Character level 12.
-Every character in this game is a survivor from Tidral. They have been afflicted with lycanthropy with the exception that their alignment remains the same even if they change into their hybrid or animal form willingly.
-Any classes are open
-Since this is a modern game please try to make your character names sound somewhat modern.
-32 point system
-Average Hp (Max first level, half next, half +1 next, and so on...)
-Alignment either Good or Neutral, no evil
-Gold: 66000

You can choose any creature with the animal type for your base animal, so be creative.

Interested

But I'm playing in a small army of campaigns (though nothing when you compare that to how many Reralae is keeping up with), and with my own campaign about to start (fingers crossed) I don't want to be overextended. I'll follow the story in case one of my campaigns draws to a close or (heaven forbid) ends prematurely.

Geezer

With 25+ years experience in D&D alone, alogn with other games ...

I have never felt the desire to play a lycanthrope, until I saw this (as a lurker). Signed on to sign up. But I have a few questions of my own since I am not used to the Lycanthrope thing ...

3 chracter sheets in one (Human/Animal/Hybrid stats)?

or 1 set of stats for all forms?

Since lycanthropes can only have HD up to 10, do I fill in with class levels to 12?

I understand the 32-point buy (where points disappear quick on scores above 14...), but I also am interested in money for equipment. Usually, though, at this level one can almost be assured of having pretty much what they need. The operative word is "need" here, not "want", correct?

Modern world, but not modern earth. Got that. So weapon types would be: Percussive or explosive projectiles? Plasma emitters? Flechettes? Or just the revert-to-feudal types of weapons?

I have more questions, but those will do for a start.

I am thinking a short, stocky werebear warrior ...

Hmm...

I'm not exactly sure if I'm going to join or not...

Just as a heads up though, I'll probably revive Errinae if I do join.

Suddenly realizing how much I didn't cover...

Starting gold, yeah, forgot about that...

well, first off with items I'm allowing medievil and modern, with the exception that your magical medievil items will not be accessible at the begginning of the game (you will get them pretty soon though). For starting gold I think I'll give you 66000. The technology of the world is modern, so grenades, pistols and such. Make sure if you're carrying a sword or gun with you, you have a good reason for it.

Second of all I forgot to clear up some things. As of yet you have not transformed into a lycanthrope. The changes have only appeared recently. As for your class abilities, all of your skills and abilities came just recently as if you just remembered a repressed memory (no, not a plot spoiler, thats just the best way I could describe it.) In addition you begin to feel a presence in the back of your mind. You do not hear it speak or suggest things, you just feel emotions like anger, fear and joy. For now you should assume your character lives a relatively normal life.

To answer a few more of lamewolf's questions, Afflicted lycanthropes have a +2 level adjustment so you have 10 levels of a combination of racial hit die from your base animal and class levels from your base creature. How you make your character sheets is up to you, but make sure you identify what abilities you get in your human form, hybrid and lycanthrope forms. If having three character sheets is easiest for you than you're free to do that.

For races (yet another topic I forgot to touch) it will be limited to human.

No plasma rifles as of yet.

Wowzah!

Questions answered, and info led to other answers. Thanks!

You now officially have my interest and my commitment.

Already started a character, can send him at request.

[On edit and after re-reading and finding answers I missed ...]

I understand the lycanthropy would be recent, and unknown to each of us at the start (as I understand it). So the lycanthrope form(s) would have the minimum HD (6d8+24), no?

So Jack Mooney, circus owner (werebear) would be, like, a Werebear 6/Ranger 4? Or would I be allowed to change the relationship a bit and be a Werebear 8/Ranger 2? I think the former would ensure game balance.

Also as I understand you. the Ranger spell (and class) abilities would show up as surprising revelations of unkown origin to Jack, right? And maybe or maybe not all aat once?

Also, I have a twist I would like to add (via PM) to your storyline. Nothing major, but I think interesting ... If rejected, no harm, no foul, but the idea flashed all of a sudden as a variation of an old game theme from long ago ...

So far so good. Questions are getting fewer ...

Reralae or Aardvark?

Is the price for ammunition shown "per round", "per clip", or "per box"?

I guess what I am asking is how many rounds of each type of ammo does each amount shown purchase?

Along with the info PMd to you about a story-tick, I have this:

Jack is a survivalist/hunter type and has the ability to make (and fletch) his own bows and arrows, make bowstrings, etc. I would also like to purchase a hunting rifle for him (with or without scope), but need to know how much the amount of ammo I would like him to have will cost. I have an idea how much ammo he could carry comfortably, but while a survivalist, he is also not exactly a "doomsayer", sohe has a cerrtain "realistic" view of how much he feels the need to carry ... ]

The Ammunition...

Would be per single loading of the weapon, which varies between the individual weapons.

You can see the DMG for the number of shots you get per weapon loading.

So, for example, the automatic pistol has a magazine of 15 bullets, so buying one set of ammunition for that gives you one magazine of 15 bullets.

There is a difference between the number of bullets you get for the different guns, but that's primarily because they are different bullets. They just happen to have the same price.

Adventuring forecast

Okay, character list is up. I'll wait a bit longer to see if one or two more characters will join, and for the current players to get their character sheets in. If all goes well, we should be starting in 1-2 weeks.
