Well

Not to take away from his teammates, as they are certainly outstanding athletes, but they carried even with the Australians. It was Phelps that did it, he is currently USA swimming. He is Aquaman.

I'm impressed.

CANADA GOT 3 MEDALS OUT OF NOWHERE! WE ARE NOW BEATING UZBEKISTAN! TAKE THAT!

Phelps

It has been awesome to watch this young man compete, and to learn his story. I don't think his success is due to doping, but a laser like focus on his goals.

He has been in a specific coaching program since he was 11, and he had his first world record at 15. Combine that with a body built for swimming (size 16 feet? C'mon, those are flippers), a technologically advanced suit and some of the best training facilities in the world, and you've got a heck of an athlete.

What I have also noticed is that he is happy for his wins, but in a quiet, accepting way. It's as if the wins are the only logical conclusion to such hard work.

Well he did suggest he was the greatest Olympian of all time, so I don't think he's that modest.

But I suppose he has a right to claim that title. Personally I'd still rate Carl Lewis higher, but that's because I think it's harder to win multiple events in track and field (and I enjoy watching athletics more than I do swimming ).

OH MY GOD

GUYS, did anyone see NBC News on August 14th?
It was about what Michael Phelps EATS. Holy crap dude.
He eats 4,000 calories per meal. 12,000 calories a day. That's 6 times what's reccommended for an average male.

I have the news video on msn video, so I'm going to listen and write down the daily chow for Michael Phelps:

Breakfast: -3 fried egg sandwiches (white bread), with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayo.
-Washes that down with 2 cups of coffee
-Tops it off with a 5 egg omelet,
-a large bowl of grits,
-3 slices of french toast with powdered sugar,
-and 3 chocolate chip pancakes.

Lunch: -a pound of enriched pasta with tomato sauce
-2 huge ham and cheese sandwiches on white bread with mayo and all the fixings (tomato, lettuce..)
-and about 1000 calories worth of energy drinks

Dinner: -a pound of pasta with tomato sauce
-a whole pizza
-washed down with another 1000 calories of energy drinks

Drugs? Who needs 'em! lol
He trains so much, it all works out for him. Geez.

Yessss he did.

What a wonderful feeling that must be for him.

He is for sure part dolphin

As for doping...he is indeed enrolled (voluntarily) in a stringent program that tests more frequently.

He had/has ADHD and in my opinion I think that actually helps him swim the speeds he does.

Congrats to all the athletes who are participating.
Just being there knowing you are in that league has to be an amazing feeling.

14 Golds and Counting....

You can only marvel at Phelps and in generations to come they will still be talking about this truly great swimmer and though I am not a avid fan of swimming glad to be a spectator of this one man show.

I can't say I agree that he is the greatest Olympian ever, (Well Not Just Yet). I personally feel those athletes who only have one gold medal chance per games who managed to win 4-5 gold’s over 4-5 games have to be classed as great Olympian....Our own Sir Steve Redgrave for instance. However to win eight medals in one games is a superb achievement whether anyone can match it in our lifetime....well nobody expected Spitz record to go did they.

I have heard that the Russians are cloning a Human/Dolphin for the 2012 after failing to nab some Phelps DNA!!!

Our little swimmer boy

Some have mentioned Phelps suit... it's by Speedo, and if it lives up to everything Speedo and the media claims it does it is an amazing suit. However... there was a great deal of controversy before the olympics over it, and it there was an official decision made on whether or not to allow it to be used (it obviously was), and I heard that to make things fair Speedo offered the suits to all of the Olympic swimmers, free. Not everyone took them up on it, probably because some don't feel it actually lives up to expectations and some might have had issues with their sponors on the issue... but everyone had the chance to wear one, and Phelps isn't the only one in the pool with it on.
So technology isn't hurting him I'm certain... but neither is being Posideon's son

Lazer Suit

There were issues with sponsors over using that suit.
In fact, the Chinese swimmer defied his sponsors and wore the Speedo Lazer suit. Wonder if he will get sued.

haha...ehhh

That naughty Chinese boy. Well, personally i'd prefer it if everyone wore the same suit, to ensure equality in that sense, so that it is trully and wholely based on the athelete's skill/talent.

*Surprisingly sees lack of comments on food post* I don't think you people quite understood the extremity of what Phelps eats in a day. I'm still shocked. Makes me sick to think about it. You guys!! lol...nevermind. I guess no one will share in my astonishment. Was it the 'calorie' word? I know some people don't understand calories. This isn't a case of easy amusement this time!

Well given the amount of training he has to do, it's only natural he's going to have a high carb (and high everything else) diet.

I imagine if you asked one of the Olympic weightlifters what they eat in a day, it'd give you a heart-attack...well either that would or the amount of anabolic steroids they also consume.

I was going to say something about the diet...

...but I got as far as fried egg sandwiches, got really hungry, and had to go eat!

That diet is incredible but considering how much energy Phelps (or any other "world class" athelete, for that matter) needs to do what they do on a daily basis, I don't reckon it just sits there turning to love handles or nothin'.

12000 calories, though... Wow!

P.S. Phelps: Human or Fish? Gotta go with human... fish don't have nipples.

LOL

Fan...I saw that this past weekend and am just getting over the shock myself

Good grief...I'm so lazy I don't even think I'd have the energy to eat enough to be that active.

uh huh

Yea, he burns those calories like mad! But have you guys noticed how so many former pro-atheletes are now rather overweight and even obese at times? Probably has to do with the extreme eating habits they develope while being so active, and then when they aren't active enough...well...
But you gotta do what you gotta do to be a pro! I seriously have respect for someone who can eat that much and be so fit. It's seriously hard...and well, that much food...he had to train himself to eat that much, i'm sure. I think he partakes in eating competitions though. He made a comment about it on the news. So his stomach is like an empty pit.

Well done

Well, all I can Say is Wow, for his incredible versatile talents in seimming, drive and perseverance. Those couple with the sacrifices of his mother to help him and his own drive and competitiveness have helped him to achieve this truly fantastic accomplishement. In two Olympics he had 14 medals and 12 are gold. 8 in this Olympics.

Super congratulations!
