Most memorable villains of all time

Come on, you know you've fought one-an awesomely made villain. A character the DM made just for you to hate.

Come one, come all! Tell us about the one you will remember forever!

Dont't we already have one of these?

Well, I suppose I'll share mine.

I don't play much D&D RPG, I'm more of a Mini's player myself. (Yeah I know, shoot me). However, I have DM'd a varient of D&D based off of my book, and I must say my favorite three villians stood out from the crowd.

Nydus- Nydus once went by the name of Nicolai Kulanoski, King of the prosperous Schlecta Empire. When Norul cast his sword, containing all of the knowledge of evil to earth, Nicolai stumbled across it. The fiery explosion it created on impact killed his friends while they were out hunting, and so he buried them there, next to the sword. He returned to honor his friends almost every day, and found himself drawn toward the sword ever more. Until one day it spoke to him, telling him that it was a gift from the gods. Terrified he ran away.

He returned several weeks later to find a horrific scene. The plantlife around the sword was dead, and no animals froliced in the meadow around it. It told him this death was a punishment for not accepting the gift of the gods, and so he took the sword.

All of the knowledge of evil in the entire known universe flooded into him, and the sword took complete control over him. It had immense power, and turned Nicolai into Nydus, the Despair Dragon. Nydus, like all Dragons, can freely switch between his Human and Draconic form.

Nydus slipped into the distance. He cannot die, for every time he perishes, he is so evil that the underworld refuses to accept him. He simply return to earth. Nydus, once king of a prosperous empire, led it into despair. He slinked into the backround and was forgotten. That is until he resurfaced during the reign of King Vladimir I (also a main antagonist). Using his superior wit and evil, Nydus bends Vladimir to his will, and now controls one of the most militaristic nations on the planet.

His goal is to destroy the embodiments of each of the elements, therefore claiming their ultimate power as his own, and he will use any tool at his disposal to make that heppen.

General Antony- Antony was a general in the Schlectan military. Not just any general, but Vladimir's favorite. After the failed invasion of Emeras Citello, and the loss of his right hand, Antony returned to Schlecta a failure. Vladimir stripped him of his rank and his honor an he was forced out of military service. Until Nydus got a hold of him.

Nydus, using his superior knowledge of balck mgics, fashioned Antony a hand of pure Dark Energy. This hand can shift into any form Antony pleases, and is entirley weightless, allowing him to weild two handed weapons with one arm, or utilize ranged weapons at will.

Antony was hired by Nydus after the Hunter- a bounty hunter Nydus hired to bring the embodiments to him- defected from Nydus to take the power of the embodiments as his own. Antony will listen to Nydus' every whim, in order to regain the honor he lost.

Ameus Hawthorn (The Death Knight)- You are all familiar with the classic Death Knight, a quintessential D&D villian of the nastiest assortment. Now imagine if you will a Death Knight on steroids...

Ameus Hawthorn was the perfect human. He was beautiful, brave, and stalwart. He worshiped the god of justice and good, Tarsonis, all his life. Trasonis envisioned his death, and he planned to make Ameus a god, so that he could be rewarded for his fealty. Tarsonis struck Ameus with a horrible sickness to test his strenght. As Ameus lay dying in his bed, he prayed to the god for salvation. Just before his death he cursed Tarsonis will all his might, and he refused to acknowledge his power.

Tarsonis was angered by this, and so he refused to allow Ameus into the Void (Heaven) or even the Underworld. He cast Ameus into Kala'al (Elven for Middle Ground). Kala'al is a massive cave network under Trinoria. There, Ameus wasted away, brooding with revenge against the god who shunned him. Before Taronis locked him away for eternity however, the dark god Norul-pleased with Ameus' insolence-created a means by which he would escape his prison and wreak havoc on the mortal world. Now Ameus, or the Death Knight, lies under Trinoria accumulating the corpses of the dead, amassing the greatest army in all existance, to arise and destroy the world.

The Death Knight has no side, and his arrival will be the culmination of the final conflict for all that is right. Either the two sides join to togther to crush him, or they both fall under his mighty fist.

Done.

Umm...

It's not really fair, since it's a villain that I designed, but none of my games so far have ever reached the point where I can introduce it beyond rumours and whispers... if any are found in the first place.

Would it be alright if I shared it?

Hmmm

Alll of the above villains were of my own design...and I loved them so much that I hated them...I don't see a problem with it.

Hrrrmmmm.....

This one I'll pop up quickly here could hardly be called a major villain, but it was nevertheless a boss fight that struck me as rather enjoyable and memorable.

Were had just entered a room that had a small number of floor-to-ceiling bolts of electricity that roamed the room at random and a large, purple furred minotaur in the middle, with horns that curled around all the way once, and large draconic wings. It took flight and was struck (and unfazed) by one of the lightning bolts. We knew this would be interesting from then on. The monster, I found out later, was nothing stranger than a minotaur + blue half dragon template

Villain Eligibility

Any villain you find worthy of the list, share it! Don't worry about how well-known your game is.

heh

I created a Demilich character that had an ongoing feud with a Mind Flayer Brain Lord. The party got caught up in the middle of it, and ended up using both the psychic nullifying artifact (I forget the name, the giant ring), and spheres of annihilation, not to mention a homebrew artifact. They started at lvl 4, leveled up to about 8, then hit a "woosh" moment where they went back in time to when the Demilich first became a lich, and when they got back they had jumped to level 15. Finally they entered a psychotic realm created by the Mind Flayer where they each acquired a template to bring them to ECL 17.

After they slew the Mind Flayer, they finally met the Demilich in person, who in the centuries since they last met (in the past) has deteriorated to nothing more than a skeletal finger (or toe, they couldn't tell). His power was immense, and he slaughtered the party's cohort (they were all lvl 20 now) instantly and demanded they swear loyalty.

Two characters knelt before him after failing will saves, while the other two refused. He gave the order to slay their two former companions, after which the psion ended the charm with one of the artifacts and they dueled the Demilich.

They found his phylactery... a box full of papers. Sheet music and an old ocarina.

The Demilich? My old drug dealing bard from Wardrums in Sendria, hosted right here at the Inn a few years ago

2 villains for the price of one

I got 2 for ya:

1: a villain a DM presented to the party who takes on the persona of the top hat monacle and villain mustache. He's a Star Wars villain, and seems "ultra-powerful" at first viewing. He literally got the entire party of good characters to watch a video of his evil deeds, and followed it by getting them to basically cause each one to happen ("the oxygen is going, get people out of the space station to fix it" and the villain had sabatoged the suits.) and things of that nature. In a recent game session we got to experience (with different characters) how the villain was released (by our characters). We now know that he's essentially electric current (think lawnmower man) which is particularly problematic in a Star Wars universe where there is an entire com-net for him to dance around and duplicate himself across. He appears (at the core) to have some sort of Roman Catholic ideology which is completely OOC since no one in Star Wars has any sort of knowledge of that, and has more fun driving people insane so that they kill each other than doing the killing himself. It's really really creepy when you run into a villain with unlimited knowledge and resources.

2: I recently created a villain (on the fly) that got an entire group of players cursing at me within an hour. By the end of the game session, almost every character had either gone crazy, or attempted to kill another party member. He's a mage who worships /my/ version of the god of magic and death. The mage presents an avatar of a clown and speaks in a voice that matches that of Krusty the Klown from the simpsons, complete with "hahahaHAha". The mage dragged them through his funhouse and presented them with a number of gags, that stacked with a number of actual dangerous traps and basically separated each from the group one at a time by one means or another. Once the entire group was split, they woke up in a stone room where he offered them a job "Kill someone for me". One group member tried to bluff and accept the job, to which the mage did what I call a proxy to him (a modified long-term version of dominate person). The party member caused the group to go further crazy over time as they couldn't figure out where these bad things kept coming from. In any case, one party member passed a will save at just the right time to stop the party from killing a general in the middle of a major city and ruined all my fun Still, the villain is still out there, and there's a lot of gags to come.

Nameless Villain

The most memorable villian I can recall was from a 2nd edition campaign that I played. Luckily the villain was not really after me per se, but he was rather interested in dismembering a member of our party.

In a battle our paladin character ended up delivering the killing stroke on an evil cleric. This obviously perturbed the soon to be dead cleric. As the sword strike fell the evil cleric uttered a death curse.

Long story short the evil cleric came back as a revenant bent on destroying the paladin. now this normally wouldnt be too much of a problem, but this revenant was "enhanced". It had fire immunity. There was no way to destroy the creature except to retrieve the "Starburst" medallion from the crypt that we were venturing to.

The Revenant popped up at the most inopportune times, and nearly killed the paladin several times.

It was truly the best game that I have ever played in. Start to finish it was about 9 months long with weekly sessions of 4-8 hours. I wish that I could find my old DM, but we lost track of each other years and years ago.
