I have, and have had, an Xbox 360 for a few years now. Unfortunately it is, as all original 360s were, a really unreliable piece of kit, and it has now broken down (again).

Since my warranty has expired, getting it repaired is going to be quite expensive, and probably only marginally cheaper than buying a new one. Does anyone have a newer version of the 360, and it is more reliable than the old?

I had my old one repaired for the red ring of death, which came back a little over a year after the repair - and at which point, I was out of any warantee coverage whatsoever.

I have purchased a new one, and it has been great for the past four months or so. No telling how it will be in the long run, though.

Thanks for the comment. It seems I can get a new one for only £60 (around $100) more than what it would cost to repair this one. So I think it's probably worth it.

I am pretty mad at Microsoft though. And pretty irritated that I'll be handing over more cash to them.

Getting an Xbox repaired only costs 94 dollars US over the site, while buying a new one is at least 200. So just get it fixed over the internet?

and wait, where in gods name can you get a NEW xbox for 100 dollars?

I can get one for £120 (around $200). It's one of those basic ones without the hard-drive. But I figure I could use the hard drive from my old one and fit it onto the new.

Yeah I lost mine once to a strange disk drive...so I tore it apart and went to work on it. It helps to have a roommate who repairs them for a living though...

My brother has a X-box 360, it kept breaking down for quite a wile then I vacuumed out the filters to where the fan is and it seems to be working fine now.

The main problem with X-boxes seems to be overheating, the fans, in my opinion, are too small on them to reduce noise so it gets damn hot in there. My brother's old x-box actually managed to melt a strip of solder as well so that wasn't good.

Here's a warning to all XBox fans: XBox was made to last about as long as it takes for it's warranty to expire. The reason that is is because XBox and Playstation are competing for who can make more money and since Playstation was winning since there big PS3 debut, XBox loosened the warranty. XBox made the warranty the same length they are meant to last(about 2-4 years with about a 2 or 3 year warranty) so that the XBox would overload after the warranty so the person would naturally buy another, and another and so on. I've seen stuff like this so many times.

P.S: I forgot to mention that PS3's last about 3 times as long as an XBox. XBox-Approx:3 yrs.
PS3-Approx:10 yrs.

Now, I don't doubt for a moment your claim that the xbox is made shoddily, to match the lifespan of the warranty. This is a pretty typical business model these days.

Unfortunately, you lose your creditbility and sound like a console fanboy when you then proceed to tell us that the ps3 is much better built, that it will last ten years to the xbox's two to three.

Last time I checked, the ps3 didn't launch until November of 2006. Ergo, the oldest ps3 in North America is less than three years old. Ergo, your claim has absolutely zero data to back it.

Edit: and this is spoken as someone who's "new" xbox just died with a two red light error. At least the warranty is still good.

My bro's has got the 0102 error now which means that it's an 'Unknown Error'. It seems that it's fixed for a short wile by just rapping a towel around the fan at the rear of the consul but it overheats so I don't advise it, there are rumors of being able to fix it for a week or so with a heat gun but I'm not brave enough to try it.

On the PS front, I've had one since it originally came out and that's how many years now? Point is its still working, never gone wrong once, and it hasn't exactly had an easy life.

Look, I'm not saying XBox's suck or are built "shoddily" all I was saying is that PS3's were built to last a very long time. And just because a few particular XBox's broke down within the warranty doesn't mean that I've got no proof. You said that your XBox broke within the warranty, so that can also mean that XBox's can be worse than what I explained. I was just saying what I've heard and researched because I was close to buying one and then I heard that they meltdown easily so I got a PS3 instead. And when you said I have no proof I do, look it up through the internet, people are backing up what you said and what I said t_catt. My friend said he bought an XBox 360 and it broke within the first 2 years and he got the warranty. I've had my PS3 for a year now and have had no problem with the internet, music or anything whereas my friend said he purchased a month of XBox Live and when he went to use it it said he couldn't. I was just claiming what I heard. You don't have to prove a point and Smite me for it. I know it was you who smited me and I don't care because I was only giving an honest opinion. And by the way, I have more proof: look what happened to all of the XBoxes posted in here-everyone's saying their's broke. I've never seen a complaint about a PS3 before except for once whereas XBox I've seen many. So don't rub it in my face with a Smite or 2 just 'cause YOU like XBox better and I don't.

In order to address, with absolutely NO hostility, several of your topics, allow me to have a word.

One: You cannot simply rely on everything you see on the internet. There are a lot of odd misguided and incorrect people out there.

Two: You've had you're PS3 for one year, therefore you obviously haven't had it as long as the 360 owners have. That means it's still got time to break down.

Three: I own both a PS3 and a 360, and my PS3 crapped out before my 360 ever did. I've had my 360 since the launch date and it's been running pretty ever since. I botuh the PS3 and less than a month later the disc drive wouldn't open and I kept getting error messages.
