Audalis - Leeway

I have a question regarding the Audalis world and I am not sure who to ask.

I was thinking of starting an adventure somewhere in Audalis and wondered what amount of Leeway does a DM have in this setting?

I mean.. can we use well known figures, NPCs, listed in the setting for that area?

Can some small towns or villages be destroyed?

How far, outside of total destruction, can a DM go with the Audalis setting?

I just want to know before I start research on where I want to have my adventure.

Thanks!

YeOlde

it's your party and you can scry if you want to

I think with any game setting, the Dm has poetic licence to do whatever he wants. Audalis is offered up as a world to people but if you want Sendria to be the hub of good and Pardinal to be the evil empire - who are we to say no?

That being said, if you are playing on the inn with Audalis, you need to be clear where you part company with the accepted world and history. Some of us know Audalis like it was the back of our hands (hey, I never noticed that before....)

Hmmm

Yes I did plan on playing the adventure here on the Inn... and I guess what I am asking is.. how far can I go? What if something in my adventure changes something that would need to be part of the history? What if a town that was on the map now is destroyed? Is this a problem?

Not saying that I am going to do any of those things.. just examples.

I mean with my own setting I know I can go as far as I want.. but Audalis is someone else's setting, who's I am not sure, and they have graciously allowed us to use it. So I dont want to overstep my bounds

well

I've DMed quite a few adventures in Audalis, and I don't take any boundaries when it comes to destroying empires, creating forgotten gods or making up a history here and there.

The thing is, however, I do all that within the range of given information. I don't change anything, I only add or go from what is already there.

It is your game, like Al said, and I think we should see the setting as a basis from where to go. If you destroy Khordal in your game, then that has no influence on the setting. We are not going to erase the city from the maps because you pulverized it in your game.

So: Feel free to do what you want, and if it's awesome, you might find it in the setting one day.

Again... I think you have quite a bit of freedom.

It's not like your game is going to become canon history for the setting... ... well, maybe it might. But, that's besides the point.

I don't know how many times I've played FR, made some great adventures using the campaign setting where characters had significant influence on the future of the lands, only to have WotC come out with a new edition putting the history of the world a little further and... dang it!... our characters are not in it!

Anyway, the point is, I think Audalis is offered up as a setting for you to take and run with. And your Audalis will probably look different than Olan's, or Alacrity's, or Almerin's, or mine... great! As far as I know, I'm the only one who has built an entire mini section around Rayther (called Shinara's Keg), which has: lots of mountain ranges surrounding it, a younger khordish expansionist clan, loads of khordish and orc ruins, and is currently being scouted out by a Orc worshipper of Tyrannis as the staging grounds for a complete take over of northwestern Antaron (and then the 5 kingdoms).

Orc ruling Bayris? Probably not in Olan's Audalis. But a definite possibility in mine.

Heck! Almerin added a new god in his Local Legends game (which we subsequently killed... but still...).

I'd say you have freedom! We might even steal some of your ideas and run them in our game!

eyep

This is my baby, but feel free to run any sort of game that you like in the setting, just as you would if it were Forgotten Realms, Eberron, etc. I remember that Admiral once ran a game where gods were killed, magic was destroyed, etc. None of it stuck particularly close to my perception of Audalis canon.

Guess what? His players had a great time. I'd call the game a success.

That being said, if you are wanting canon info, but are not sure where to find it, feel free to check with me, Alacrity, or other Audalis "sages".

<_<

Olan should start another game in Audalis with the promise to make it canon, purely so I could have a man trying to conquer Sendria using only a watermelon enter the archives.
