Vampire

Sort of the same thing for a vampire character. Heroes from the past age need to be mortal. (I was willing to allow one 1/2 mortal amongst them and that slot is taken)Now you could play a vampire living in the current age whose memory reaches back that far and who perhaps was once considered a hero. If you go this route I'd suggest playing as a dynamic character and starting out atleast quasi-evil. Otherwise I would need a good explanation of how you managed to survive through the ages of monster rule.

I really like the dwarf idea. Having some slay-happy character amongst the heroes of old really makes for some funny and interesting situations. Also there is no dwarf so far and I like dwarves

Oh and yeah theres plenty of slots left. I wont cap off the game until 5-7 players and we have 3 so far.

All righty then

Ok. I'll need to ponder on the choice of characters.

I too like the idea of the dwarven hero too. I like it a lot. He would be wielding dual battleaxes and wearing practically no armor except perhaps his numerous tattoos. Would that work for you? Tattoo magic?

Then again the vampire might work fine too. Could you give some more insight on how the evil characters fit in the campaign? I can see one planning to overthrow his master or otherwise attempting to gain more power. But siding with a hero of the slave races, how does that work? Or perhaps I should not worry about such a thing?

A couple thoughts

It has been said that much of the culture and technology of the "Age of Man" has been lost, but wouldn't there still be undead old enough to possess such knowledge, especially liches, vampires, and other highly intelligent undead, in fact couldn't one assume there are even gnomish liches or vampires, thus meaning gnomes really aren't extinct after all, just undead. And what about the Svirfneblin, are they gone too?

Also, wouldn't the Nine Crowns have access to a multitude of human, elven, dwarven, etc, etc souls from which to gain information?

Clarification

@Raven

Tatoo magic is fine, sounds like an origninal character.

With the vampire I'd go with a past-rediscovery storyline where the vamp was once good and somehow rekindles his humanity. Maybe one of the heroes of old was an intimate aquaintence when he was alive. Of course you could remain evil and play as an antagonist, thats perfectly legal.

Certainly if you want to build a protagonist monster you need to build some hook into the character which could get him to cooperate with the humans, dwarves and what not. In my beholder example, I use his desire for a pupil for this purpose.

@Shieldwolf

You're right lore would remain. This is particularly true of the undead, who's main source of power is that connection to magical knowledge which has been lost elsewhere. However, this doesn't mean they are likely to share.

I like your idea with the gnome undead. I hadn't thought of that, but its a good idea. Feel free to run with it if you want to play such a character and resurect gnomish technology.

As for the Nine Crowns, the archfiends will have powerful magics but they are despots and as a result will also guard all lore very closely.

So basically the problem isn't so much that the knowledge is lost, but that there is little free flow of it

Yup

The dwarf it'll be then. I already seem to have this image in my mind of him. I'll try not to copy too much of Gotrek Gurnisson into him. The Warhammer hero certainly has tattoos, but there's no magic in them.

Since we're heading towards a storytelling game with great level difference in characters, I guess magical equipment doesn't matter too much either? Do you have some limitations in your mind or shall I simply list any equipment I see fit for you to accept or not?

Magical Equipment

I need to know details on what equipment you have and its specific magical abilities/affects.

Since you're playing a hero from the old age I'll PM you the shared background for these characters. Plz keep any questions regarding that data in e-mail transit and off the forum, bc/ Id like to keep it a secret from other players.

Okie dokie

Roger that.

I hope you're not in great hurry cause I'd like to work on the character before I send you too much. I'll sort out the background and even though the to my understanding will be a storytelling game, I'd like to create some sort of a sheet for the dwarf.

Take ur time

Yeah thats fine, the more detail the better. Im no longer expecting a fast paced game and that is fine since I have alot going on right now.

Just want to say...

I love love love the idea of the tattoo covered dwarf. LOVE IT! It'll be a great compliment to my manipulative faery/elf.

question

Hey Mad, do you need a list of Spells Known for my character, or are we just to assume she can cast whatever is decided upon at the time of casting because of her particular heritage and abilities?

Magic

Only spell like abilities which are innate must be dealt with specifically. However there should be some theme, limitation, and general description of your magical knowledge or skill.

Questions that should be answered

1)the type of magic you have focused on (and if you're a generalist make sure you add in some limitation such as the neccessity of libraries, study time for memorization, etc)

2)how you perform your magic, implements, components, etc. Im not taking the DD line that there is only one way to do magic, but please be balanced. Sorcerers who can snap their fingers and make spells should not be generalists, but should have a strong theme to their magic related to the character which limits their power.

3)if your magic is a source such as a God, magical lineage, or arcane tatoos. You need to describe that source and any limitations it imposes on your character

Also consider lore and spellcraft a separate ability from magic. Sorcerers don't need to know much about ancient languages, magical relics, or even the substantive nature of magic. Whereas wizards will generally have more knowledge about such matters.

Magic cont.

Ah ok I reread your CS and realized there wasn't much there on the specifics of her magic. My mistake. Just PM a bit about what types of spells she uses or some theme on her magic. Although sorcerers can be generalists in pen/paper bc/ everything's set in stone, I think its unbalanced for them to be so in this type of game especially since I won't be expecting them to use spell components and such.

Nearly there

Almost done with the sheet. There'll be some epic magic items on the character. They're err... kinda hmm... powerful.

Power levels

Thats fine. The heroes of old need to be powerful, the entire world is the dungeon after all. Just remember that items can be lost/destroyed/stolen etc. Considering artifacts of the power you have will be extraordinarily rare in the present the later is a very real possibility especially if you get flashy with that flaming, righteous, vorpal sword of castration
