Best D&D Hybrid class choice

Hi,

First time writer on the forum, Short time reader of the Comics, Long time avid D&Der

Played 3.5, fun... got into 4.0

I was playing a Goblin Sorc, and an Elf Warlock
But now that that game has finished, and new rules are out,
I was wondering if anyone had any insight *no actual prodding at D&D* as to what the best combo for Hybrid char class would be?

I have made a few of them, but right now my favorite would be a Cler/Pali fusion. Any others anyone could think of?
Thanks
Polmac

Hey Polmac

Hey Polmac,

Welcome to the Red Dragon Inn! I moved your post to the Comings and Goings section... mostly because it's your first post here. I know you have a question, so that would make it suitable for the Common Room (not the Q/A because that's for game related threads), or the Gaming Surveys.

But since it's such an in-betweener, and people are just as likely to see it here, you're in this section.

Let's hear it for our new member people! And while you're at it, answer his question.

Have a good time here, Polmac.

Cheers and bottomsup!

As for combines I like doing Cleric / Rouge. Get to naughty and nice. A little magic, a little weapons and a lot of fun.

hmmm...

I've always been a fan of Illusionist/Rogues, fighter/rogues, or psion(psychometabolism)/Rogues. Though a monk/sorcerer going for the Enlightened Fist prestige class is always fun too.

It really depends on the purpose and personality of the character. Obviously I tend towards arcane casters and rogues (with a little monk (NOT A HALFLING) thrown in the on occassion).

In myopinion Cleric/Paladin seems a bit redundant. A Paladin with extra spells... isn't a Paladin a blend of Fighter and Cleric anyway with a few nifty abilities thrown in (And major role playing restrictions due to alignment restrictions)? And why do Paladins have to be Lawful Good anyway? Aren't there holy warriors for every deity? Why can't there be a paladin of a neutral deity, perhaps a knight defending and seeking knowledge thought lost to the world. I've considered creating an eBook of paladin variants, but I'm not sure how well it would do sales-wise.

Wow... that turned into a ramble... but I suppose I should be well-known for that by now.

two observations

One: the terrible halfling pun made me laugh.

Two: I personally allow paladins of every deity in my Audalis games (in fact, it is a canon rule for the setting).

Paladins for Shinara (chaotic neutral goddess of luck) are awesome.

hybrid

I like fighter/mages personally. Basic and gets the job done. They don't work as well in 3.5 as they used to, so for that edition it really depends. Druids make great hybrids by themselves, and I'd put a lvl 20 Druid up against almost any character that's not a wizard and have a good shot at winning.

As to Paladins... I can't seem to find the old thread, maybe it got deleted. I told a story about how a player in my game wanted to become a Paladin of Shinara. I told him the time would come where he would have the opportunity to give himself totally over to luck - and then he would become a paladin.

He thought that opportunity came at the top of a 200 foot tree, fighting Harpies. He jumped.

Miraculously, he survived with less than 10 hp. Of course he attributed this to Shinara and climbed back up the tree with renewed vigor. Later, fighting the Harpy Queen he engaged with a scream of "SHINARA PROTECTS!!!!" and charged.

Rolling a 1

I was using critical fumble and hit charts. I rolled on the failure table.

Rolling a 99. The character hits himself with his weapon. Roll attack vs. own armor.

I had him slip and fall on his sword. He rolled the attack.

Again, 20.

With my face buried in my palms, I rolled on the critical hit table.

99. Instant Death.

If my math is correct, that's about a 1 in 300 thousand chance of happening.

Moral of the story: Never, EVER, play a Paladin of Shinara.

3.5 I know, but not 4.0 which I hate and avoid

I play a 3.5 rogue 3/Cleric 4, to Tymora, the Goddess of Luck, She is a nice combination, very useful in support roles, though not the heavy hitter.

My favorite Druid, is a Druid 20/Master of Many Forms 10 with a Beast Companion and a Dragon Cohort. Awesome combination. When she turns into something, she can do instantaneous changes, up to Gargantuan size, and changes into anything with all their special abilities. This includes Dragons, outsiders, off planars, aberrations, monsters, humanoid animals Plants. If it lives, she can turn into it. Though not the gods themselves It doesn’t forbid this but I figured thatit would presume to much and not be healthy for the one who did it.

Also Rogue 8, Shadow Dancer 2. Then add five levels of Invisible blade then go back to rogue and add on that class as high as it goes.

good times!

story reminded me of my druid barbarian

My favorite tactic was to turn into a monkey and use my javelins (I had special javelins made into monkey size.)

Was in a dungeon. Saw some enemies, the fighters charged up, i went monkey form, and whipped out my javelins.

First javelin throw rolled a 1. fail check resulted in me hitting my allied fighter. Rolled a 20 to hit him, he didnt like that very much.

Second javelin, rolled a 1. Fail check resulted AGAIN in hitting THE SAME fighter. Rolled a 20, AGAIN. He wasnt happy.

Third javelin, ROLLED a 1! Fail check resulted in THE SAME fighter. i rolled like a 15, still hit. This time I hurt him to where the enemy thought I was on they're team. Killed the poor fighter and congratulated me...

I never laughed so hard, but felt so bad.

Druid/barbarians are a fun class though.

Hybrids, or multiclass?

I guess my answer depends on the edition... And the appropriate term with each. If you're asking hybrid, suggesting 4th Ed, I would have to go with the Avenger/Barbarian combo. So nice, imho.

However, if we're saying v3.5 and multiclassing, then I have to say that my classic fall back for a glorious character is a rogue/wizard/spellwarp sniper. When you can take a fireball and turn it into a ray (meaning no save), make a sneak attack with a ray spell, and coup de grâce with a max CL disintegrate for 80d6 points of damage at level 20? Too nice.

Gestalt (hybrid) class 3.5

I've had fun playing a fighter/cleric (dwarf) , a barbarian/sorcerer (kobold) , rogue/fighter (human) , a paladin/monk (human,this was funner than it sounds) , and monk/fighter (gold half-dragon,human).

A duskblkade/cleric (tiefling) channeling his own inflict spells was also in our group once. That is a nasty combination.

Rogue/sorcerers also tend to be a party favorite. We got one just about every gestalt game.

The warmage/swashbuckler was interesting too.

My personal favorite that the DM made for me because i didn't know what to make for a campaign was a psychic warrior/warrior (unearthed arcana version) . He was an Elan and wielded a 2 bladed sword. He gave him a psi crystal, and a psychic crystal weapon. He is the deadliest melee character that i have ever played.
