House Rules

I'm not sure how well this is gonna work, but I have decided on a system that will allow a character to develop a second skill set, albeit at a much slower rate than their standard class skills. Feel free to comment with your thoughts on the system.

Simply out, every 4 levels your character would gain a level as is he were a gestalt character with his normal class and whatever his secondary skill set was going to be.

I have, of course, come up with an example with which to illustrate just how this would work..

For this example I have thought up a half elf Ranger, who goes by the name Ladnar "The Wolf" Stoneshield. Ladnar, like any self respecting wolf is a melee focused ranger, and thus decides his secondary skill set should augment his ability to do damage. Fighter really doesn't bring much to the table for him since he is already proficient with all weapons, and will prefer to stick to lighter armor for mobility sake, so he goes with Rogue, reasoning that the sneak attack and additional skills will pay off better in the long run than a little armor training and a few feats.

For the first three levels The Wolf will be a standard Ranger, no variation from the normal 2 weapon Ranger, at 4th level though, when he gains his class features he gains them as if he were also a 1st level Rogue. He would gain the better of the 2 HD, Saves, BAB, Skill points, etc, as well as all class features including Sneak Attack. For levels 5-7 he again only grows as a Ranger, at 8 he gains the abilities of a 2nd level Rogue. By the end of it all, as a 20th level Ranger he would also have the skills and abilities of a 5th level Rogue. Favored Enemy, Combat Styles, Trap Finding, Sneak Attack, Tracking, and the whole nine yards.

For a better break down, lets look at it by level

Ladnar "The Wolf" Stoneshield, Half Elf Ranger (Rogue subspec)

1: Rng d10 HD, 6+Int x4 Skill points, BAB +1, FRW +2 +2 +0, 1st favored enemy (Animal), track, wild empathy

2: Rng d10 HD, 6+Int, BAB +2, FRW +3 +3 +0, Combat Style Feat (Two Weapon Fighting)

3: Rng d10, 6+Int, BAB +3, FRW +3 +3 +1, Endurance, 1st favored terrain (Forest)

4: Rng/Rog d10, 8+Int (rogue skill points), BAB +4, FRW +4 +4 +1 (Rng saves/BAB are better), Hunter’s bond (Wolf Animal Companion), Access to spells if high enough WIS, Sneak attack +1d6, trapfinding

5: Rng d10, 6+Int, BAB +5, FRW +4 +4 +1, 2nd favored enemy (Vermin)

Now I could keep this list going until level 20, but frankly I would rather not keep this up. The general idea is presented here though, At 8th level Landar would receive the Rogue's Skill point numbers again (as it is higher than the Ranger's) and the Class Features of a 2nd level Rogue (Evasion, rogue talent[Bleeding Attack]) as well as his 8th Level Ranger BAB, Saves, and HD (as these are all higher than the Rogue's) and his class features (Swift tracker, 2nd favored terrain [Underground])

Class and subclass will be decided at character creation, and the only deviation I will allow from these chosen paths is the use of a single Prestige Class, so if you are wanting to work toward a specific Prestige, you'd likely have to manage your class and subclass to meet the prerequisites.

Damn you Shield Wolf!!!!

I thought I would be able to put off my interest in this game for awhile as I think about starting my own game but you have lured my interest once more! Darn it all, this just looks like so much fun! Must... resist...

I will keep following this thread and in a week or two I'll have a better idea of whether it is at all feasible for me to play. If it is then I will let my creative juices burst through the floodgates and I will begin thinking about my character. If it isn't... well they just might burst through anyway. For now, I love the sound of the system Shield!

mwahaha

Glad you find the idea interesting and irresistible, I'm quite eager myself to see how it works out. That said, I haven't really gotten much worked out past what I have posted already due to work and family matters that will always take priority. I hope to get more details ironed out and ready shortly, but this game is still a good ways off from being ready to play.

Perrrrrfect

Well that just makes the game more tempting. I won't be free to consider anything for another week and priority is working on my own game so it just might work that I have time to join in to game with you. You may have already stated this, and if you have I apologize, but what level were you imagining beginning at? If you haven't thought this far ahead, that's totally cool with me, I just can't help starting to consider different characters I could be!

Well..

I hadn't actually said yet, nor have I fully decided, but I was thinking of starting at first level and seeing just how far we can take the game.

okay, may regret this, but what the hey

I have decided, despite many of the details being still in development, that I am going to open recruitment for this game and start accepting characters. Once I have at least 3 complete characters I will likely start up the game, finding ways to add in anyone who may later decide to join up.

I am aware that there are some things I still need to get posted up as far as characters go, and actually intend to make the QA thread in the morning to address such things as the Goblin racials and a few other important tidbits.

For the time being however, the key points you will need to know is that the system is Pathfinder, if you are not familiar with the system then that is okay, I'm still learning it myself. The SRD has all the information you may need to create a character using the core races, including several non-standard races and classes. Starting gold is 150% standard starting gold for your class, the trade off being that you MUST take either a craft or profession skill to reflect how you made money before joining Ladnar's little Adventuring Guild he's starting up. Ability scores have been pre-generated and are 13 16 14 10 18 17 before racial modifiers. Keep in mind that you will also need to select a "sub-class" as mentioned in a previous post. Keeping with the mythos of the setting the majority of Sorcerers will be of the Arcane Bloodline, but that is not to say that the other bloodlines are not available. Paladins are off limits, and I'd prefer Wizards to be specialist, but will still allow generalists as well. If you have access to source material I will consider non-core class or race options as well, including alternate class options and the like.

Any further questions can be posted here for the time being, or PMed directly to me if you prefer until I get the QA set up and ready to go.

One more thing

I failed to mention this earlier, but firearms are still relatively rare and hard to come by in this period of time, and as such the only way to really start with one is to either make it yourself, consuming materials equal to the cost of a masterwork weapon, or to buy one for double to cost of the masterwork item. That said, you will likely not be starting with one.

Here's the thing

Well, I have a character concept and I am interested but I also have a paper to write. I should be able to finish it up today or tomorrow but still, after that, my main plan of action is to get my game going. If I can do all this and still play in yours then I am very interested. But, I probably won't have a character ready for another week or two. I wouldn't want you holding a place for me if there are others interested or the game is ready to go. So if I manage to finish my character in time I'll let you know. If not I look forward to a good lurk!

That being said... do you know of any way I can get my hands on the Pathfinder hand book, torrents aren't working for me and I just don't have the money to purchase my own copy. Yeah yeah, I'm letting myself get carried away with character ideas when I should be working but... I can't help myself.

Ps. Q/A is looking great Shield!

Interested!

I am defiantely interested as well, but like Dragonblood I do not know the pathfinder system.. I have a character concept in mind for certain, well two actually. but would need help putting idea into statistical data representng it.

The idea's are as such.

A Goblin/Changeling Rogue/(subclass wizard) {Prestige class aimed towards is a Seeker A focused street rat turned dungeon delver with a fascination in the retrieval of artifacts and technology

Or

a Druid (Subclass Ranger) Sort of a Guardian of the ways of the old, holds a interest in technology and such but fears mankind will let it run rampant and with the invention of explosives and such that the earth and livlihoods in themselves will suffer from it as power overtakes responsibility, and greed leads to war.

DRAGONBLOOD and OTHER

You can find just about all the information you need regarding races and classes online. Pathfinder has an SRD site similar (I'd say, better) to the D20 SRD. It can be found at:

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/

The core material from the Player's Handbook and most of the Advanced Player's Handbook, including alternative race and class features can be found there in an easy to read format. They even have a PC "High Goblin" race listed there!

Enjoy!

Ayrn to the rescue as usual

I had mentioned the SRD in the QA thread I believe, but hadn't gotten around to linking it, thanks Ayrn.

Oh dear...

I don't know whether to thank you or curse you Ayrn! I was half way done my paper, due for tomorrow, when I discovered you had posted this. Already I've run off to the site and am scrounging around deciding how to best execute my character concept.

Thanks kindly for the friendly pointer sir!

Focus, young padawan!

Paper first... then Player Character! Always works better that way.

Like I said, no worries, Dragonblood! I hope the link(s) give you much joy!
