As she walks into the building, she realizes that she is beyond lost.

Um hi. Jing here!

Here's the dealio.

I want to game. Most definitely. But there are a couple problems.

1. I have no clue how to go about gaming here. I've been in RPs before on other avatar sites, like Roliana, and I know how to work those. Would those kinds of RPs be considered free form? How would a rules based RP work in forums?

2. I have limited time that I can be online for this. So unless the entire group was okay with one or two posts a day from me, I doubt I would be able to get into a good game.

Any help for me?

Speaking as a newbie...

Well, in my rather short (in comparison to the vast majority of people here) time on this site, I've nonetheless found that there are endless ways to manage a game. Free-Form is more like a storytelling with everyone participating, a lot of the time. Rule-Based is a bit more complicated, but usually descriptions of how things are taking place (such as describing situations of how far an opponent is away from a player and what other factors of the room may hinder or help in a combat situation) or a mild dose of free-form can get through anything.

Everything really is dependant on the game and DM/GM.

For many games, two posts a day is a great number. There are decent games currently ongoing where two posts a week is minimum or one post every day or two is the expectation.

Other people can give you greater advice than I, but if you're looking for a simple free-form game then "Footprints: Corruption in Tithuana" is free for more applicants (and a shameless plug by me, considering I'm playing in it and it was the first game I participated in). Another somewhat more rule-orientated one that's got off the ground recently is "Flux Wars", which already has a complex world created (and another plug to a game I play in).

As for games I'm not playing in? I'm not entirely sure. Look around, though, there are plenty of good games that a new player is welcome in.

Ah see...

Thank you for the advice. To get my feet wet, so to speak, I've posted in the Bleeding Lute. Just to see how this work a little before I really join a game. I don't want to bog everything down with my newbiness, you know? ^^;

I will look into those other games you mentioned, though. Free form does sound more like what I'm used to, honestly. I do play rules based, but have never played one online/in forums, only ever in table top.

Well

Celtia has already answered everything, and plugged my game for me (thanks ^^) but here are some concise answers.

1. Most rule-based games here are just like playing in a freeform game, but with the results of the characters' actions intentionally left open, for the GM to give the go-through to or not.
Tabletop:
"John aims for the Troll's jugular."
"Yeah, that's a natural 20. Double damage too."
"Sweeeeeeeet."
could translate to Forum:
"John swings at the Troll's jugular, before taking a backstep in case he misses."
"*insert die roll here* The troll is thrown back, blood spraying everywhere... etc"

2. One or two posts a day is a LOT. Most GMs set a minimum of once per week. No worries on that front!

In the case of dice rolling

Most dms in a forum game take care of the rules and die rolls because in a forum situation they would not be able to see your rolls. On the other side of the coin, DMs can be lenient and allow you to do your own rolls. In that case you can use the "Armoury" tab at the top and select die roller.

after selecting the type of die, amount of dice to roll, adding your modifier, etc. click "Roll Now!". Once the result is shown, you can either email your result to the dm or select, copy and paste your result to a Q&A thread set up by the DM or in an OOC (out of character) post in the game thread.

Another way to handle rolls is to meet with the DM in Dragon chat and use the dice roller in the chatroom. that way the dm can see your rolls.

Awe Man :(

I would love to have you in my game The Trilogy War, Jing, but at the moment I'm over full at 10 players.

If I get an opening I'll give you first dibs so to speak. I'm one of the DM's that only ask you to post a once a week mininium but I enjoy reading more then just one .

Heh

I think most GMs are like that Tann: stick to the 1/week minimum as convention, but of course are happy with more ^^

Any games open??

I would very much like to join a game now, but as I was looking through the recruitment threads, most are closed? Anyone have any open spots? I'm willing to even play antagonists. ^^
