captain america style paladin

one member of my new group has modeled his character after Captain America after a few tweaks and nearly 24 hours i finally caved and said yeah its a pretty good idea... i mean what character portrays a Paladin better than Captain America the problems were well the shield how do we get it to be a ranged weapon to hit multiple enemies and return to him without sacrificing defensive capability so i thought i would see what he could do he made its stupid powerful but the start was there so im currently working on it as its a paladin he suffers with a slight lack of dex so hitting with ranged is hard... so i made it str based (like a composite bow... correct me if im wrong) but it is still a work in progress so any ideas to make it more believable cause i still worry about it not working lol

Hmmmm....

...crafting/forging a shield that can be thrown in a manner to be used as a ranged weapon, I think, would be a fairly simple task, really. Basically, you just want to make an extra large metal Frisbee (I'd say that a metal like mithral would be the best choice for such a thing in a D&D setting). Getting it to hit multiple targets and return to the thrower, however, might be a bit of a trick... Those properties of Cap's shield, I believe (and correct me if I'm wrong, here, Cap fans), are derived from the steel/vibranium alloy from which it's fashioned - basically, the shield is thrown, hits the first target and "redirects" itself to the next one by harnessing/redirecting the energy from that initial impact, etc, etc, until, eventually, the absorption/redirection of that energy sends the shield back towards Cap and he catches it.

*shrugs* Without magical enhancements or the introduction of a similar metal/alloy to your campaign, I'm not entirely sure how it could be made to work... Even a mithral shield would likely hit the first target it's thrown at and then... THUNK ... it's done!

I'd say you might want to explore existing enchantments (or create one of your own) that might be applied to the shield to "simulate" the effects you're looking for... Or, simply, let your pali be able to throw the shield but drop the multiple targets and return bit...

RAZOR BLADES

on a crit it takes head off first enemy and in a straight line hits a second would work for this process but multiple crits could change direction i suppose but hey when will that ever happen lol

Just out of curiosity...

...at what level are these players starting?

Seems to me that, even if such a shield could be made, that it'd be exceedingly rare for it to be wielded by a low level character.

With that in mind and if you're planning on starting them out at lower levels, you might want to go ahead and allow the shield but only let it's "mystical/magical" properties evolve through sparkly role-play... Pali finds the shield, pali finds himself in a combat situation a short time later where all he's got available is said shield and makes the decision to throw the thing, shield flies true and makes that first critical hit (but no rebound/multiple target/return), pali goes "Wow! Cool!", pali practices throwing the shield and improves with time (adding in multiple target capability, return to thrower bit, etc)...

*shrugs*

Just thoughts.

Actual AD&D shield With some modifaction*

+3 Small Shield of Throwing The user of this shield if so decided may throw it as if a Frisbee using the Thrown Weapons chart up to 100 feet doing an amount of damage depending on range to target. 10-20 feet 1d12 +STR, 20 to 40 feet 1d10 +STR, 40 to 60 feet 1d8 +½ STR, and 60-100 feet 1d6. The shield will return automatically unless stopped from doing so. On a critical hit of 18-20 Shield will do double the range damage to target.
(*Added Modifaction)On a critical hit of 19-20 shield will rebound having an 80% chance of striking another target before returning to thrower.

Limits amount of targets hit to two and keeps the shield within reason and not too epically powerful.

Nice!

Good stuff, Tann!

Guess I didn't realize that there was a Shield of Throwing out there already!

3.5 stuff

Feats:
"Brutal Throw" (Comp. Adventurer) - Trade STR mod for DEX with thrown weapons

"Improved Shield Bash" (PHB) - Allows you to make a shield bash and still apply the AC bonus from the shield.

Magical Enchancements from DMG:

For Shields:
"Bashing (+1)" - increases the damage by two size categories (1d8 for a heavy medium shield)

For Weapons:
"Throwing (+1)" - allows a melee weapon to be thrown
"Returning (+1)" - allows thrown weapon to return to wielder at the start of his next turn

So, if I had to price this shield, it would cost 20gp (base shield) + 150gp (masterwork quality) + 1000gp (mithral) +1000 gp (+1 AC enhancement) +3000gp (bashing enhancement) +2000 gp (throwing enhancement) +6000gp (returning enhancement) = 13170 gp total

Other enhancements from DMG to consider:
"Distance" (+1) - double range increment
"Ghost Touch" (+1) - affects incorperal creatures
"Seeking" (+1) - negates concealment

Other feats to consider:
Ranged Disarm, Ranged Sunder, Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot, Power Throw

Other enhancements to create:
"Improved Returning" - requires "Returning" enhancement, allows you to use the weapon multiple times per round with full attack
"Ricochet" - requires "Seeking" and "Distance" enhancements, allows you to target multiple enemies with the same throw... (this might be better as a prestige class ability for the Master Thrower prestige class)
