Characters and Their creation

Hey everyone, so I am brand new here I have been gaming since I was a WEEEE LAD! as you can tell by that joke. Essentially I dedicate my inspiration in life to the fact that I have had gaming in it. Growing up there were 2 things in life, Art and Gaming! The reason I am creating this is because I have gone freelance in my life but I want to do something very particular with my art. And I am reaching out to you for advice.

What I would love to dedicate the rest of my art career to doing is custom painting peoples Table top characters, but I want to know what people would be willing to pay for something like this. Also would you prefer to get the art already framed and printed? I know growing up I used to do all my friends characters for them and they loved it. But I am looking to do a more professional style rendering of peoples characters. If anyone would like to see what I have recently done please let me know I will link you to it, but I want to make sure I enter into the RPG world correctly and not just be like hey I will draw your character for $50, and piss people off.

By the way I grew up playing Ad&d 2nd Edition, Star Wars 6 sided die, and Cyberpunk. By my original love was Ad&d.

Hey everyone thanks for all the feedback and I can't wait to get this discussion going.

Welcome Baron...........

I hope you enjoy this site and find both fun and profit. We have several resident artists that game and do or have done similar art requests. That is why your mentions of art for profit is in the spamvertize section.

So there are those that know better the pricing of character portraits and may be willing to advise you.

I'll be honest and tell you I am a CHEAP old bugger and I look for free stuff. I got my avatar free when another artist on this offered to do some to show his work.

But there are others willing to pay for fantasy art.

In the mean time welcome and I hope you find time to join a game or two. I recommend you read the Pit F(r)iend guide on the home page along with the site terms. They will go far to getting you started here.

The most I have ever paid was $25. And that was only for a very long term character that difines who I am as a person.

That being said for a good quality framed picture/painting/drawing $50 isn't unreasonable. However the gaming community generally doesn't have a lot of money to spend on portrates when with a little searching on google will likely provide what you are looking for.

THAT being said if I do choose to get another of my characters imortalized I will keep you in mind. And I do hope you dream comes true

CHARACTER ARTTTT

I gotta say, I would definitely be willing to pay 25 dollars to get my characters immortalized. Although, anything higher would feel like it's kind of pushing it.

For example, the most memorable character I've ever had was this half-orc in one of my friend's campaigns, and he made the terrible mistake of letting me mismatch class abilities, and he took off alignment restrictions for characters- although, you still had to have a reason why your character would go down such a path and all that.

Basically, I ended up with a half-orc monk with rage abilities that could shoot magic laser beams out of his body, and he was extremely awkward in social conversations. It was really fun to play as him. Like, for characters like that, I would be willing to pay more than $25, probably up to 40, but that's only if I see the painting beforehand and go "YES THAT'S HIM" and fall in love with it.

Quality vs. price

Hey guys thanks so much for the feedback. yeah from what I have found most people sit around the same price for character portraits. But then again you step into quality range vs. amount willing to pay. Here is a link to one of my most recent pieces, part of me wants to offer a better quality to the community.

But I also would think you would want a framed print around 11x14. Not just a 8x10.

Thank you

odyson thank u for being frank.. The funny thing is I find myself being cheap also haha. And I am very excited to explore more. Dust off my dice brain, and get back to gaming

Padre- it is funny you say that price seems to be the standard but what did you do with the art after u paid for it?

You are really good. I'm lucky I can draw a breath.

I'll guess you may find some takers here.

Any others we might see?

I have it hanging on my wall in my 'office'.

However seeing the quality the price being a little higher is acceptable.
As always though an items end price is based on three things: Quantity, Quality, and Expense. Out of those three things a customer can only choose 2.

You can have a large(quantity) picture, that is high quality, however it is going to be expensive.

You can have a high quality picture that is cheap, but it isn't going to be big.

And you can have a cheap, large picture, but the quality is going to lack.

Then of course there is the time factor as well.

And at this point I would have to say that I'm just rambling.

more pictures

Of course,

Here is some links to more of my work, I would link to my art store but I don't want people thinking I am soliciting.

Yeah to be honest I am new to the community, and most of what I want to do is because I have a passion for it. Not so I can get rich. I would just love to paint peoples characters for a living.

The quality you see would be around 4 - 5 days worth of work. Most of the post cost comes in printing and framing.
