You know...

...let's go with Continual Light. I re-read both spell descriptions and, based on that, decided that continual sounded more like the effect(s) I was hoping to achieve.

Update: Edited game post to specify Continual Light.

good call

Yes, using Light is a bit like pissing on a forest fire - may feel good but really not that effective.

would you

Would you like me to reveal what happens with the CL now or wait for others to post?

I defer to your wisdom...

...O' benevolent and magnanimous DM dude!

I'm all for finding out, now; especially if it gives myself and the rest of the party some nudge one way or another as to possible next actions. I mean, you know, if CL doesn't work at all it'd be nice to know now so we can lob another fireball into the darkness in the hopes of lighting a candle or something in there, right?

not that you would get the joke but

You keep lobbing fireballs and I will start calling you Rune.

Rune was an Archmage player I had in my party for years. Never met an offensive spell he didn't like, but ever used defensive.

I've heard stories, I believe...

...wasn't Rune a member here at one point? And isn't J wearing his coat?

Now... I do like my offensive spells a good deal, this is true - (I'm Batmage! Tell your friends about me!) - but I've discovered that what I really like when mageing is using spells creatively... kind of like when Jal levitated that table and the Greens ran face first into it (or did it just stop a weapon or two... been long enough ago that I'm not 100% sure... either way, I remember being all giddy that my "flawed magic" was so effective at that point... even if Jal did die a few posts later.)

Hrmmmmm....

...stoned dudes!

Strange things are afoot at the Circle K!

Is there anyway to tell, at a glance, how long these "statues" have been there? (A layer of dust, cobwebs, etc, perhaps?) I'm guessing that it probably "varies from statue to statue" somehow but don't want to get too meta in my "we're all gonna die" thoughts just yet.

*flips open spell book, rumages through inventory, contemplates...*

get closer

Hard to tell where you are standing. No obvious signs of dust or decay. They are a ways (10'+) into the cave and I am working on the assumption no one has entered yet.

well

This screams basilisk or worse (aka we're all gonna die). Arien is smart enough to know this, but he may be distracted by family crests or whatnot (poor wisdom and all of that).

Oh DM, live forever... what would be metagaming here, and what would Arien reasonably deduce?

Not sure I understand the question

deduce? Not sure what you mean? What would you like Arien to deduce? The statues before you have no family heraldry that you recognize.

Hmmmmmmmm.........

Stone people, bad breath smell, lack of light........had to go look it up but sure sounds like a Basilisk.

Sooooo who has "Blind Fighting?"
Where's Dare Devil when you need him?
---------------
Ah, I see Max has Blind Fighting AND a mirror!!!

So if can first find it, then engage it to distract it, then send in Max blindfolded with his mirror to get within 20 feet of it, then the Mage casts a bright light, then Max reflects the Basilisk's gaze, then it turns to stone and "Voila" we get on the next killing thing.

According to the OOC

OOC: Finarsil remembers that in the songs and stories of the Tomb of Horror the cave entrance lead to a large cavern with three entrances to the tome, only one was the actual way in, the other death traps. The cavern itself was guards by a Basilisk and a Behir - but both were slain before the party entered.
So according to what Alacrity wrote both the Basilisk and a Behir are DEAD but that does not mean that something more sinister is Not Lurking beyond the Statues.
