A Map of the World as it Was

A Map of the World as it Was Gramps... Grandfather Asher makes a point of showing this map to every kid old enough pick up a ball and slow enough for him to catch. He keeps it rolled up tight like a scroll and squirreled away someplace, even though it doesn't matter anymore. Somebody put a little red O on the map ages ago - might have even been Gramps - to show our place in the world. The middle of nowhere. Thanks, Grampa.

He says our continent is called Aderynaria, the Land of Birdsong. The country lines aren't marked, but it used to matter so he taught me we were from The Republic of Chelonia. So our place is as follows: Slate. Aderynaria. Republic of Chelonia. Lake City. Dead.

Well, this is it. The red circle on the map. The local-local. Looks different now, doesn't it? We're in Lake City. Pretty good joke right? Well things aren't what they used to be - this city was once a big-time hub of trade. Gramps says we didn't export much beside fish, but we did do a pretty good job of playing shortcut across the fifth-biggest lake in the world. That's Lake Serenity. Now-days that lake's not much different from the rest of it. Gone. Nothing but flats now. There's an old road that runs from here to Middleton, if the bridge'll still hold. I guess you could go around it, but what fun is that? Looking the other way, that same road picks up on the other side of Serenity Flats and runs back to Pike. Probably further in both directions, but where would you go?

Look southeast. That's Calamis Ridge, I'm told they're just foothills but they're steep and it makes travel pretty rough going. That tall one is Mount Nox, with its little brothers Grine, Avis, and Brun. I don't know any of the other names, I never bothered to ask.

On Money

This is a Water Token. After everything happened, we found out pretty fast that gold didn't have much intrinsic value. The thing that does? Water. Each and every water token is - theoretically anyway - redeemable for one day's water ration. Gramps's generation decided it was a great idea to make them out of wood, which incidentally turned out to be another thing we just never have enough of. Dad's generation made ones out of stone, but those are only worth about a cup of water apiece.

Pantheon

The Pantheon

Iaoth Epithet: The Formless, The First
Worshipped as: Creator
Domains: Air, Water, Fire, Earth, Magic
Gender: Neutral
Alignment: Neutral Good
Symbol: Triskele
Favored Weapon: Guisarme

Air, Water, Fire, Earth, and Magic. The five elements that govern our world. Iaouth the Formless was the first to call to them, and is their greatest master. Our existence is owed to the creator, and it is the creator we forever serve. Iaouth is universally worshipped.

Cadwyn Epithets: Fair Cadwyn
Worshipped as: Goddess of Music and The Sunrise Hour
Gender: Female
Domains: Healing, Luck, Chaos
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Symbol: Sparrow
Favored Weapon: Rapier

Carwyn Epithets: Fair Carwyn
Worshipped as: Goddess of Travel and The Sunset Hour
Gender: Female
Domains: Protection, Travel, Trickery
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Symbol: Rose
Favored Weapon: Light Spiked Shield

Carwyn and Cadwyn the Fair were the first children of Iaouth to walk in the light, and the most beautiful. We see Cadwyn's reflection in the sky in the morning, and her sister's face guards the night. Their sharp wit and prickly demeanor make them the perfect foils for Jack Domino. They are worshipped by primarily by Bards and Druids, though they attract all manner of worshippers. It is said that Cadwyn is the most selfish of all the Gods, and that her sister is the most giving.

The worshippers of Carwyn and Cadwyn often gather in the same locations.

Koltan Epithets: Koltan the Hammer
Worshipped as: God of War
Domains: War, Strength, Law
Gender: Male
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Symbol: The Star of Koltan
Favored Weapon: Two-Handed Warhammer

War is not a simple thing in any era. Who is right and who is wrong is often determined by who lives the longest. Koltan's tanned face smiles upon a battle well and fairly fought. Fighters and Monks see his blessing as a great boon in war, but most Barbarians find him passable at best as a War god, preferring to worship Gnurl.

Jaelah Epithets: Shining Jaelah. She of the Yellow Hair
Worshipped as: Goddess of the Sun
Gender: Female
Domains: Sun, Fire, Law
Alignment: Lawful Good
Holy Symbol: The Sun
Favored Weapon: Trident

She of the Yellow Hair, is the bastion of goodness in a broken world. Shining Jaelah serves as inspiration to Paladins, Clerics, and all who would oust evil by light of day. Even now her light can be seen, though veiled behind the clouded sky.

Lacuna Epithets: She of the Black Hair
Worhipped as: Goddess of Shadows and of the Moon
Domains: Magic, Healing, Water
Gender: Female
Alignment: Neutral
Holy Symbol: Three Faces of the Moon
Favored Weapon: Scythe

Lacuna, goddess of the night, is revered most by practicioners of arcane magic. Her mystery calls to their spirit like a owl calls to its prey. Rogues find her irresistible in the same way.

Grum Epithets: Grum the Maligned
Worshipped as: God of Nature
Domains: Plant, Earth, Death, Destruction
Gender: Male
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Holy Symbol: "The Corners" Representing the corners of the world
Favored Weapon: Gauntlet/Unarmed

Always portayed as a stout man with a long black beard, Grum gained his epithet after the world died. Once a happy god of growth and plenty, his realm has been nearly destroyed in the past century. Those who still worship him believe he has been personally maligned by an unknown force, and will do their best to restore his glory. These worshippers are primarily Druids and Rangers.

Saraia Epithets: none
Worshipped as: Goddess of Knowledge
Domains: Knowledge, Protection, Animal
Gender: Female
Alignment: Neutral Good
Holy Symbol: The Golden Ouroboros
Favored Weapon: Composite Longbow

The goddess of knowledge is loved by Clerics and Wizards alike, as well as any who seek the truth. She is shown as thin of form and nimble of hand, wearing a white tunic and a choker in the form of the Ouroboros.

Jack Domino Epithets: Lucky Jack, Old Fluke
Worshipped as: God of Luck, Games, and Tall Tales
Domains: Luck, Chaos, Water
Gender: Male
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Holy Symbol: A Domino
Favored Weapon: Hooked Hammer

Jack Domino is the luckiest of all the gods. This short, shifty-eyed god is favored by Rogues and Bards. The story is, he won his godhood in a game of dice. Of course, he is also the god of liars and of long yarns, so take any story about him with a grain of salt.

Ushat Epithets: Ushat the Wanderer, The Old Woman
Worshipped as: Goddess of Death
Gender: Female
Domains: Death, Travel, Law
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Holy Symbol: Shepherd's Crook
Favored Weapon: Shepherd's Crook

When a feeble old woman comes to your door in the night, begging for a meal, do you turn her away? If Ushat raps on your door, you won't be able. Evil Clerics, Sorcerers, and Wizards are her chosen.

Zandr Epithets: none
Worshipped as: Trickster God
Domains: Trickery, Luck, Chaos
Gender: Male
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Holy Symbol: A Crow
Favored Weapon: Sling
Zandr doesn't really see himself as evil. More like bad things just happen around him. All the time. It isn't his fault if you couldn't make the right decision, right? Evil Rogues and Bards are often in his thrall

Gnurl
Epithets: Gnurl the End of All, Gnurl the Destroyer
Worshipped as: Destroyer God
Domains: Chaos, Death, Destruction
Gender: Neutral
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Holy Symbol: A Ram's Skull
Favored Weapon: Dire Flail
What has a beginning must have an end. Gnurl is the end to all stories, the emptiness that comes after a world takes its last breath. Some say Gnurl is coming already, and the sour rain is drool dripping from his teeth. Evil Paladins and most Barbarians revere him above all.
