Meeting the inlaws...

Stardate 2365.02.08 (Monday)
USS Peregrine - Science Lab 1, Deck 4 - 1400

Surprise inspections are the thing of nightmares for the unprepared. The Andorian Imperial Guard teaches guardsmen to be prepared for anything. Not being prepared teaches harsh lessons to the recruit. Asovil still remembers witnessing the first and only dressing down she had ever received. Scars can be physical, spiritual, and mental. Andorian instructors are adept at delivering all three with one swift kick resulting in a lifetime memory of correction and humiliation that cures any future mistakes.

Transferring from the School of Arts and Sciences to the Imperial Guard, some would say was an improbable and complete opposite career path. Others said that she was going to fail outright. But there are things that drive people to do the impossible--even that which they don't originally think they can accomplish. Experiences such as that lace her life and firmly establish a belief that trials and perceived insurmountability are the forges through which hardened steel is crafted. As a Starfleet officer, junior though she is, she must be that catalyst in her subordinates' lives. This is why the newly appointed science officer had not informed any of the crew within her department that she was on the way after she had deemed it no longer necessary to remain on the bridge.

Asovil Sh'iraolnas doesn't know why the previous department head was arrested and she isn't even sure that knowledge will do anything to change her approach. For all the highly intelligent Andorian knows, the science crew was party to their officer's misbehavior, perhaps even culpable. Yes, Starfleet had only arrested Lt. Thorlesen, or whatever his name is (Asovil doesn't care to expend the mental energy to remember the criminal's name), which would indicate that they have not yet found evidence to incriminate any others. That evidence has not been found only means that their investigation may not have turned anything up yet. Experience on board the Equinox makes the lieutenant, junior grade, fully aware that ship life means close quarters and little in the way of secrets. At least someone in the department knows, and knew, about the illegal activity. Asovil is determined to remedy the lackadaisical and overly familiar behavior she suspected was prevalent to invite such activities.

Purposeful and commanding, Asovil strides into Science Lab 1 and stops abruptly just as the door slides shut behind her. The room before her is deep and wide with work tables, computer screens, and various experiments being monitored across live feeds networking together many of Starfleet's science labs, not just the ones on board the ship. This arrangement is no different than what had been set up on the Equinox and is a particularity within Starfleet that Asovil quite enjoys. The networking brings together a community of scientists from all over the quadrant to share theories and refine project findings. Respect amongst scientists means that rarely, if ever, are any works plagiarized or stolen.

Two humans are present in this lab which tells the lieutenant, junior grade, that the others are spread throughout the other labs. One of those present wears a single gold pip on her collar. Of a slightly smaller than average height for human females, this one wears her blond hair tied up and out of the way. The other is a male with black hair retreating from his face as though in a race to make it to the back of his neck. Skin appearing loose about his jowls does nothing to improve his apparent lack of poor genetics and he sports a pot belly like a four month pregnant Farengi. Both look startled and while the woman pulls herself together with haste, the male continues to stand mouth agape, his unfortunately shaped upper body turned towards Asovil at the waist while his legs remain facing forward, bent slightly at the knees, ready to leap like an Andorian Snow Springer.

"Ensign Maize," the senior officer assumes crisply. "I am Lieutenant Junior Grade Asovil Sh'iraolnas, the new science officer for this ship. I believe you are my second?"

"Why, yes, I am."

"Sir." Asovil adds beginning a slow stroll clockwise about the lab.

"Excuse me?" Dalia blinks in confusion.

"You may address me as sir or lieutenant as I am your superior officer and that is my rank." The Andorian paused and bent slightly to intently study a small Vulcan beetle encased in a ten centimeter circumference covered bin.

"Yes, sir." Ensign Maize's icy response falls cold on Asovil's ears. Not at all displeased, the Andorian resumes her snail pace walk.

"And who are you Crewman?" Lt. Sh'iraolnas pauses long enough to direct her sapphire gaze upon the still posed jackrabbit of a man.

"Crewman Thomas Petra? Um, sir?"

"You might want to double check that, Crewman."

"Uh, why, uh, sir?"

"Because you seem unsure."

Thomas spit an awkward laugh through his lips and relaxed his stance. "Oh, no. I know who I am. You just--I mean, I was just--well, see? It's just that--"

"Never mind," Asovil returns to her cursory inspection. The lab is actually in really good order for a department headed up by a criminal.

"Welcome aboard, sir," Ensign Maize has recovered enough to attempt a save by turning her superior officer's attention from the bumbling man. "I wasn't aware as of yet that Lt. Tesenblen's replacement had been selected. I apologize that we aren't all here so I could introduce the team."

"I would imagine that with the ship under way and no senior officer assigned, you had been looking forward to the responsibilities of department head." The lieutenant stopped in front of an array of screens with vital project information for various projects grouped into color coded boxes and began processing the data. "I'm sorry to disappoint."

"No, sir," the ensign hurriedly attempts to recover from the perception that she might be making a power play. "It was nothing like that."

Walking the floor again, Asovil spares Ensign Maize and the foolish Petra a patronizing gaze. "Of course not."

"I was merely stating that everyone in the department would have been here to greet you, is all." The ensign's hurried explanation is a sure sign that whatever recovery she had mad is no lost.

"Be that as it may," Sh'iraolnas runs the fingers of her left hand lightly across the rim of another clear container bearing some plant form the Andorian is not familiar with. "I've familiarized myself in a cursory manner with many of the priority projects within this department. I've read the crew files--those currently not sealed, that is. And I've read a number of Lt. Thorelsun's logs."

"Lt. Tesenblen, sir." Dalia politely offers, but Asovil has purposefully mispronounced her predecessor's name this time hoping to determine how deep this woman's loyalties lie. It is the Andorian's opinion that when faced with a rigid and obviously antagonistic superior officer a person would allow a little mistake such as the calling of a person by the wrong name to slide. Unless the individual doing the correcting felt loyalty towards the person whose name was mistaken, that is.

"Ah, yes," Asovil allows a small smile to creep up on her dark blue lips. "So it is. I apologize.

"There's little time left in Alpha Shift, so I expect everyone will understand that we will be pulling late hours tonight. I want to meet with everyone individually, Mr. Maize." Lt. Asovil Sh'iraolnas stops her stroll of the lab in front of the closed door to her new office. "Starting with the crewmen and ending with you, please."

Having given the order, Asovil turns and strides into the barren office, the turning of her stomach becoming more pronounced the further from the initial confrontation she grows. Sevar would likely have pulled something like what she just went through off much smoother than she. He had been born into this role; Asovil merely claws her way through each encounter with fierce verocity.

Wrapping up time in the Big Chair

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine; Bridge - 1240

As the Peregrine's pre-flight routine went on, Lt Zai had actually started to let himself relax into the chair a bit and, between reviewing the files and reports that regularly pinged the command chair's console and playing overwatch as the bridge crew went about their duties, the Trill had occasionally allowed his mind to stray from the tedium of checklists and administrative tasks associated with leaving spacedock and reflected, instead, on the minutia of this latest assignment and, of course, the series of extremely odd events by which it had been accompanied, The fact that most, if not all, of the Peregrine's department heads had been offloaded (more than one under extremely suspicious circumstances) tried to consume most of his attention, of course, but, all in all, those transfers were only a small piece of the larger puzzle. Finding Jacobs, rather than Sarah Morland, in command of the Coronado fit in there, somewhere, as well,

Right next to the piece that is the animosity being directed at Silas from several fronts, we'd guess, he thought, absently flipping from one report to another, And, know that we think of it, no mention was ever made as to why Capt Morland no longer commands the Coronado or, for that matter, to where she may be assigned, now. Curious.

,The smoldering embers of that enmity, too, seemed to have been stoked to full life and fueled (at least for Jacobs) by the unanticipated decision by the Kuldar and Rytain ambassadors to take berths aboard Drake's "superior" ship as opposed to the more appropriately outfitted Coronado. Is that the same piece of the puzzle, then, or another piece altogether? Tochi couldn't quite decide. He did make the determination, though, that the ambassadors, themselves, even without their sudden change of accomodations being considered, were separate fragments of the whole, Their retainers that remain aboard the Coronado, too, he reminded himself, Odd that diplomats would so readily leave their retinues to their own devices, or vice cersa, for that matter.

"Station keeping reports gantryways retracted," Ops reported, snatching the Trill's attentions away from his musing, "Workpods disengaging."

"Off-cycle at 34.25%," Ensign P'Tammah added from CONN.

"Lieutenant Tochi," McTavish's voice came from the Engineering station,

We must have missed him exiting the Captain's Ready Room, Zai said, looking back over his shoulder to regard the newly appointed CEO.

",Ifn' we increase the ship's plasma output by ramping up the warp core's generation rate we could be on our way in a jiffy. We would have to have the station follow the power output closely which a computer link could do just fine, they could back it off as we generate more internal power. Ifn yer in a hurry tha is." He pointed to one of his screens. "Not exactly regulation... but it could do the trick." He nodded. "in a pinch,"

Tochi nodded. He noted, too, that the Engineer's earlier apprehension seemed to have been somewhat diminished and, seeing that, offered a faint smile along with that nod. "We're not necessarily in any hurry, lieutenant," the Trill said, "but we do appreciate your input. Make it happen, Mr McTavish; we'd like to see Peregrine at the ready by 1250 hours."

Following that, Lt Zai checked the time, once again, and, rising from the command chair, flicked a glance at the Captain's Ready Room door, then toward the doors of the turbolift from which he expected the ambassadors and their escorts to emerge at any moment, when neither of those portals opened, right away, the XO adjusted his uniform with a tug on the hem of his jacket, clasped his hands behind his back, and took a step or two away from the command chair. "We're at ten minutes and counting, people," he announced (probably unnecessarily), "Let's get those checklists and diagnostics squared away." As aggravating as their time on SB 118 had been, and as eager as he was to put the base in their wake as a result, Lt Zai was not entirely sure that setting into the black as the Coronado's escort was going to minimize any of the fallout resulting from the extremely turbulent events which had, thus far, prefaced their new mission, We worry, in fact, that it will only worsen,

just about as much as he can take...

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine, Captain's Ready Room - 1235

Captain Drake felt a rush of warring emotions rage through him. Truth be told, he wanted nothing else than to be alone for a time, to inspect these feelings, to deal with them in a constructive manner. But alone time was a luxury that, as the commanding officer, he could not afford himself.

Silas was sick with worry for Commander Thorsson, a man that the Peregrine's CO saw as more than a talented engineer, but as a friend. From what he had heard, Silas understood that Erik had gone into some sort of agressive seizure state, destroying part of Engineering before collapsing. The situation was serious or worse, and the big enginner was being moved off the ship altogether. Drake felt fear for his friend gnaw at his guts; if the onboard medical facilities and talent were not enough for the engineer, the situation was dire, indeed.

Sadly, Drake could not focus on that alone; the ambassadors were aboard, and it was absolutely imperitive that the Peregrine - and Drake by extension - not let them down. The Federation was counting on this mission to be a success, and Drake knew that the mission has to be treated as the utmost priorty. Still, the situation had thrown gasoline on the embers of emnity that Captain Jacobs had harbored over the years for Silas; Drake had little doubt that, once way or another, he would regret earning Jacobs' attention once more.

Even that, though, could not be the end of it. Silas felt apprehension, worry, and anger over the way that his senior staff had been sytematically removed from his ship. Transfers and such were a part of the job, of course, but it stretched the limits of credulity to suggest that nearly the entire contingent of senior staff would be replaced at once - and in the face of such a delicate mission, at that. Drake was not a big beliver in coincidences, and experience had taught him that the more extreme the coincidence, the higher the liklihood that there was actually some undiscovered pattern in place. For this many changes to "just happen" in the face of a mission such as this flew in the face of all Silas had lerned to be true.

But now, the absolute clincher was literally staring him in the face. Perhaps the fact that Thorsson had fallen ill was, in fact, an actual coincidence - but with everything else currently going on, Captain Drake was being asked to believe that a ranking engineer had been transferred directly from the Coronado and Captain Jacobs, only to end up here on the Peregrine by happenstance. The naked insult galled him more than he cared to admit; Silas could feel his fingertips actually shake with fury, so he carefully folded his hands in his lap while Tochi finsihed his briefing. As he kept his eyes on the new engineer, he casually asked for clarification. "Will the damage delay our departure, Lieutenant Zai?"

Tochi shook his head. "No, sir. No major systems were affected and thankfully, the damage was not what it could have been. Crews have already been assigned to repair details and, with the proper shunts around the console that was destroyed, we shouldn't lose a minute."

"Good," the Captain said, taking his eyes off of McTavish for the moment and fixing them, once more, on his XO, "We have less than thirty minutes before we are scheduled to depart, Lt Zai; I'd like you at the CONN when we do. If there is anything you need to attend to in that time, I suggest you do so, now."

"Aye, sir," the Trill responded.

"You are dismissed, Lieutenant," Drake spoke with finality.

"Thank you, sir," Tochi nodded before turning to stride back onto the bridge.

For a long moment, it looked like the new engineer would follow Zai out of the Captain's Ready Room, but Drake spoke quickly to prevent that tactic. "Mister McTavish," Silas said flatly, just before the door shut behind the withdrawing XO, "Stay a moment, if you will. Have a seat."

For several long, awkward moments, the Captain allowed the silence to hang heavy in the room as he held the gaze of the acting chief engineer. Maintaining a cold, stony mask, Silas finally spoke in quietly restrained rage. "Do you think me a fool, mister McTavish?"

((OOC: assuming a negative response, a denial, etc))

Drake took the opportunity to stand. "The question is very simple, sir. Do you think me a fool?"

This time, the Captain gave the engineer no real opportunity to answer. "You expect me to believe that almost every department head on my ship has been replaced in the last twenty-four hours, but it's completely unrelated that you just happened to be transferred directly here from under the watch of my old friend, Captain Timothy Jacobs?"

Silas snorted derisively. "I have no head for politics to begin with, and I am honestly far beyond the point of even caring to try... so I will be absolutely frank with you, Lieutenant. I expect you to do your duty to the absolute best of your ability while on board this ship. You report to me, period, end of discussion. If I discover that you are sewing one molecule of subversion, that you are carrying on secret communications with your former boss there on the Coronado, or that you are otherwise working to do anything that might reduce the capabilities of this ship or her crew as it pertains to our mission..."

Captain Drake fixed McTavish with a steely cold glare, "...I will treat your mutinous actions with every severity that they deserve, and you can expect to spend the duration of your time aboard this vessel in the brig. And that, sir, is the very best you can hope for - I will promise you that. Do I make myself perfectly clear?" he asked.

((OOC assuming a positive response))

"Very well," Silas spoke, cutting off any further response from the engineer. "As you certainly already know, we leave the Starbase in the next few minutes, and you have a mess on your hands in Engineering. Attend to your duty station at once, Lieutenant. If you have anything else to say to me, we can find a time when things aren't quite so hectic - and when I'm not quite as ready to space Jacobs' agents - to discuss your concerns. Dismissed."

A short time ago.... (A back post with the CO)

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine, Captain's Ready Room - 1236

For a long moment, it looked like the new engineer would follow Zai out of the Captain's Ready Room, but Drake spoke quickly to prevent that tactic. "Mister McTavish," Silas said flatly, just before the door shut behind the withdrawing XO, "Stay a moment, if you will. Have a seat."

Haemis blinked, he wasn't sure what to expect but this was something else indeed, he shook his head. "Sir?" he looked confused.

Drake took the opportunity to stand. "The question is very simple, sir. Do you think me a fool?"

This time, the Captain gave the engineer no real opportunity to answer.

"No sir, not in the least. I Donno ye well enough but only by what reputation has been provided. A fool? No sir." he shifted uneasy in the chair watching the Captain stand.

And that, sir, is the very best you can hope for - I will promise you that. Do I make myself perfectly clear?" he asked.

Haemis opened his mouth, there were a thousand things he wanted to say but he held his tongue as realization settled in that he was being honest and extremely frank with him. Haemis could see the anger as much as hear it in his voice. This was not at all what he expected. "Aye sir, perfectly."

"Very well," Silas spoke, cutting off any further response from the engineer. "As you certainly already know, we leave the Starbase in the next few minutes, and you have a mess on your hands in Engineering. Attend to your duty station at once, Lieutenant. He stopped at the door and hesitated a moment. Not but a few moments before did he want to run out, now he wanted to stay. He turned and only for a moment. "Thank you sir." he passed through the doors quietly back out onto the bridge. His mind ablaze with the comments the Captain hand just made.

Getting to it!

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine; Bridge - 1245

"We're not necessarily in any hurry, lieutenant," the Trill said, "but we do appreciate your input. Make it happen, Mr McTavish; we'd like to see Peregrine at the ready by 1250 hours."

Haemis turned back towards his console. "Aye, aye. Establishing data link with the stations computer and syncing the systems." his hands danced across the engineering console as he established the necessary communications data channel with the stations engineering computer, and linked the draw down system into a program macro he quickly built, he then went about to linking in the ships Matter/Antimatter generation system. "That should just about do it..." he nodded. "He took a breif moment to reconfigure the power coupling between the ship and the station, and started ramping up plasma energy generation on the ship using the macro program, he simply imput the desired completion time and let the computers do the rest.

He sat back in the chair and watched as the program ran, he wanted to ensure no complication occurred. "That's a girl!" he muttered to himself.

PO Cook

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine; Sick Bay - 1240

"ALL RIGHT PEOPLE!," Dana bellowed as she walked in and seen the other nurses there and the Doctor not in the room at the moment, "Lets get this Sickbay squared away. The Emergency is over! I must say you all did a good job. Not Great, but most of you are new here so after some time you will work better together. I'll cut you some slack... this time."

She walked over and looked at the gurney where Chief Thorson had laid while he was being treated. She paused for a long moment before she continued. "Lets get all this gear disinfected and put away. We will be leaving the Starbase soon and as soon as we are underway and everything seems fine, we can go back to the normal rotation schedule. You should all have it on your PADDs now."

She turned towards the exit, talking over her shoulder, "I'll be back in 10 mins, and I expect everything to be in order."

She left them to figure out everything; Nurse Patel was kind enough to show them where PO Cook expected things to be.

(Edit: Forgot the time stamp or whatever you call it. )

cool: lost

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine, Bridge - 1245

Captain Drake gave himself a few minutes to cool off after dismissing Lieutenant McTavish. As the new chief engineer left the ready room, Drake found that his fingers were still trembling, and he felt that regaining full self control was imperative before stepping onto the bridge. Silas knew that, at the present moment, he was as close as he had ever come to truly losing his temper as the Peregrine's CO, and he had no desire to lose the respect of the crew by devolving into the frothing rage monster that bubbled just beneath the surface.

Momentarily, there was a very subtle variation in the background hum of the Peregrine; most people would likely have not noticed, but Drake made it his business to be in tune with his vessel. A quick status report showed the reason - the Saber class cruiser was no longer drawing power from Starbase 118, but was now fully self sufficient - a good fifteen minutes ahead of schedule. Silas decided that he had hidden away long enough; it was time to see what in the nine hells that Tochi was doing with his ship.

The Captain took a deep breath, tugged his uniform into perfect alignment, and strode through the door, down the short hall, and onto the bridge. "Lieutenant Zai," he began, addressing the Trill executive officer current occupying the Big Chair, "I see that we have decided to disconnect ear..." the comment died in mid sentence as the Captain's gaze settled on an unfamiliar blue-skinned officer standing at Science One.

Despite his intentions, Silas felt his gaze narrow as he focused on the newcomer. "And who might you be?" he queried, making every effort to keep his voice level.

"Sir, I am Lieutenant Junior Grade Asovil Sh'iraolnas, the new chief science officer for this ship," the Andorian replied.

New. Chief. Science. Officer?

Silas took a deep breath and glanced at his XO. "Lieutenant Zai, please explain to me what she is talking about. Where is Lieutenant Tesenblen?" he asked in an innocuous tone that one might use when asking what was on that day's breakfast menu.

Drake had an excellent rapport with Tochi Zai, or so he hoped. The Trill was careful to keep his tone neutral, but the body language communicated the displeasure he felt at sharing the news. "Lieutenant Tesenblen has, er... been arrested by Starfleet security, sir, "he answered. "They have apparently seized no small portion of his lab contents, as well. I myself was just made aware of the situation..."

With the executive officer's pronouncement, the Captain's facade of professionalism finally cracked. The commanding officer of the Peregine swore darkly, loudly, with enough venom behind his words to cause paint to peel from the nearby bulkheads. His blue eyes crackled with icy fury. "Lieutenant Moriden," he spat, "open a priority channel to Starbase security."

The operations officer looked decidedly uncomfortable as she complied. The viewscreen lept to life, revealing a sandy-haired human in his late thirties. "Commander Jennings, here," came a calm voice. "What can I do for you, Captain Drake?"

Drake took two steps towards the screen, his face a mask of rage. "You can explain to me," Silas spat, "what justification you could possibly have for arresting one of my department heads without coordinating with me first - hell, without even notifying me of the charges! To sneak in and remove one of my senior staff like this, to steal the property of this ship, is more than highly irregular - it's downright despicable! How dare you!"

Jennings seemed unfazed by Drake's temper. "Captain, your science officer was trafficking in illegal plants and seeds, several of which are dangerous or deadly. This has been going on for some time." A faint expression that Silas interpreted as a bit of a smirk touched the man's mouth before he continued. "Now Captain Drake, you may wish to tread lightly here; while no one truly expects the Captain of a starship to know exactly which plants are being grown in the botany lab, the argument could be made that, as commanding officer, you are responsible for everything that happens on board. You wouldn't want such an implication, I'm sure..."

Drake drew a sharp breath at the smug insolence. The Peregrine's commanding officer saw red; had Jennings been physically present, Drake might have had his own appointment with the brig, such was his anger. Instead, he gripped the edge of a console until his knuckles were pale white.

"First of all," Silas hissed, "don't you *dare* threaten me, Commander Jennings. Second, let the record show that you are making a mistake in arresting Lieutenant Tesenblen. The man is an exemplary officer, and while he was indeed growing some prohibited plants, he was doing do under very tight controls, and in pursuit of some extremely valuable scientific and medical research. He is a talented researcher with the best of intentions; his only real crime was in ignoring the bureaucracy necessary for a piece of paper granting him permission to carry on his research."

Drake drew a breath. "Third, I absolutely knew what he was doing, at least with the wolfsbane - and I approved of it specifically because of his motives and his attention to safety. If you wish to enter that into your report, feel free. If you feel that makes me an accomplice in a crime, perhaps you can find an admiral willing to sign off on my own arrest warrant." Jennings appeared a bit surprised that Drake would so freely admit his culpability.

The Captain released the console and stood straight. He spoke softly, with a hard edge behind it all. "Finally, sir, let me offer you a piece of advice - do not *ever* let me catch you on board a vessel I command, unless you have prior authorization and have cleared it with me personally. If it happens again, Commander, I will consider you to be an unlawful intruder, and will treat you and your team as such. Do I make myself perfectly clear?"

Jennings' eyes widened in surprise, but Drake did not wait for him to finish whatever reply he might have been crafting. "Drake out," the Captain spat, cutting communications.

Silas took a deep breath, then turned to fix his gaze on the tactical station. "Lieutenant Berk," he asked icily, "I would be very interested to understand how an outside security team could board my ship, arrest one of my department heads, seize an apparently large amount of materials from one of my labs, while neither you nor your staff seemed to either know this was going on, or cared to let me know about it. Perhaps you can gather the facts, and we can have a debriefing after we are under way?"

(OOC: assuming a "yes, sir" or the like)

Silas closed his eyes for a moment and pinched the bridge of his nose. He almost certainly was not being fair to Berk, as Starfleet had clearly *wanted* to spirit Tesenblen off of the Peregrine, but at his current frustration level, Drake had allowed himself to vent part of his anger towards the hapless CTO.

Naturally, the turbolift doors chose that moment to open, revealing the Kuldar and Rytain ambassadors and their security escorts. Drake forced himself to swallow the bile that rose in his gullet, take a deep breath, and form some impression of a smile. "Ambassadors," he spoke as evenly as he could muster. "Thank you for joining us. We will depart Starbase 118 momentarily."

Aye sir...

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine, Bridge - 1245
"Drake out," the Captain spat, cutting communications, the main viewer winking off with a faint white flash, Mathias watched the Captain draw in a sharp breath, his shoulders tight, he was clearly trying to mask, albeit with little success, his rage.

The optics of this looked about as bad as they possibly could. Mathias felt almost as in the dark as the captain did, something which was hardly appropriate for a ship's chief of security.

"Aye sir." he said, certain that he'd betrayed his own uncertainty with what had happened.

Either I have an officer that went behind my back, or some prick had twisted the arm of one his officers to a great deal of success. Both prospects made him sick.

"Ensign Blackmon, I'll have you take over for me, I have to have a word with the rest of the department."

Mathias turned to the Captain "Sir, I'll question my security officers and have a report ready for you within the hour, with your permission of course."

(OCC: Assuming the captain responds in agreement)

Mathias made for the turbolift, and as the doors shut behind him he felt himself lose his composure completely, if he didn't sort this screw up this would be his shortest tenure on a ship and certainly a black mark on his service record. He tapped his combadge.

"Berk to Reid, meet me in my office immediately, we need to talk."

(OCC: Edit, forgot time stamp.)

Rewind to the Captain's Arrival and Fast-Forward to the First Department Interview

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine, Bridge - 1245

Experiments require a lot of documentation, which in turn causes large case files and massive amounts of scientific rhetoric detailing the smallest calibration adjustment including date, time, and with the help of the ship's computer, the nanosecond that the change took place. Variations in material results are catalogued with impunity and the objective turns out to be the smallest detail in the entire record. Were it not for the summary at the beginning of each experiment record, the Andorian scientist would have been in for months of catching up on the work of her new department. As it is, she still has weeks of education ahead of her.

Scanning the list of off-white project files on her screen, Lt. Sh'iraolnas pays little mind to the swooshing sounds of doors until she hears, "Lieutenant Zai, I see that we have decided to disconnect ear..." the comment dies mid-sentence right about the same moment that Asovil turns and realizes the man wearing the three gold pips of a commander who had been talking is staring straight at her.

Memories of the Starfleet public record file she had perused on Commander Silas Drake back at the station flood her thoughts. He stands taller than she by a few inches if her judgment is correct, sandy brown neatly trimmed hair with the standard style of sideburns prevalent in Starfleet, and the body type of an athlete bring to mind the Andorian scientist's older brother Tethaas whom she hasn't thought of for days now. The man's evident temper reminds her even more of her volatile brother than the build and haircut.

The captain's gaze narrows and burns through her to the wall behind. "And who might you be?" he queries.

"Sir, I am Lieutenant Junior Grade Asovil Sh'iraolnas, the new chief science officer for this ship," Asovil barks in crisp military format while snapping to attention.

Captain Drake draws in a breath and relieves his science officer of his scrutiny as he turns his questions to his XO. "Lieutenant Zai, please explain to me what she is talking about. Where is Lieutenant Tesenblen?"

Lt. Sh'iraolnas notes that even the Trill is careful to keep his tone neutral as he shares the news. "Lieutenant Tesenblen has, er... been arrested by Starfleet security, sir," he answers. "They have apparently seized no small portion of his lab contents, as well. I, myself, was just made aware of the situation..."

That does it. The Captain's professionalism cracks. He swears darkly, loudly, and with enough venom behind his words to cause paint to peel from the nearby bulkheads. His blue eyes crackle with icy fury.

"Lieutenant Moriden," he spits, "open a priority channel to Starbase security."

Asovil involuntarily glances to her right where the operations officer looks decidedly uncomfortable. The viewscreen leaps to life as Lt. Moriden quickly complies and Asovil turns to watch the proceedings while not even once feeling that Captain Drake's ire is directed towards her.

The screen reveals a sandy-haired human in his late thirties wearing the gold uniform associated with security personnel as well as three pips matching Commander Drake's. Something about this man doesn't sit correctly with Asovil, however. Studying his facial features and the intensity of his gaze combined with the slight natural curve of his mouth and the science officer is immediately reminded of a molecular psychiatry class she had taken some years earlier. Still unsure as to whether or not she is a convert of the science, she has to admit that the argument for bone structure analysis in determining characteristic personality types could potentially use this particular Starfleet officer as a poster child.

"Commander Jennings, here," the man on the viewscreen states in a calm manner. "What can I do for you, Captain Drake?"

Drake takes two steps towards the screen, his face a mask of rage. "You can explain to me what justification you could possibly have for arresting one of my department heads without coordinating with me first—hell, without even notifying me of the charges! To sneak in and remove one of my senior staff like this—to steal the property of this ship—is more than highly irregular, it's downright despicable! How dare you!"

Jennings appears unfazed by Drake's temper, but Asovil finds herself immediately liking her captain's spitfire approach to dealing with a situation that she can imagine is beyond frustrating. "Captain, your science officer was trafficking in illegal plants and seeds, several of which are dangerous or deadly. This has been going on for some time."

A smirk touches Commander Jennings' mouth before he continues, "Now Captain Drake, you may wish to tread lightly here; while no one truly expects the captain of a starship to know exactly which plants are being grown in the botany lab, the argument could be made that, as commanding officer, you are responsible for everything that happens on board. You wouldn't want such an implication, I'm sure..."

"First of all," Silas hisses, "don't you *dare* threaten me, Commander Jennings.

Knowledge that her predecessor isn't a traitor or smuggler intrigues Asovil. Drake draws a breath, "Third, I absolutely knew what he was doing, at least with the wolfsbane - and I approved of it specifically because of his motives and his attention to safety. If you wish to enter that into your report, feel free. If you feel that makes me an accomplice in a crime, perhaps you can find an admiral willing to sign off on my own arrest warrant."

Jennings appears a bit surprised that Commander Drake would so freely admit his own culpability and Asovil makes a mental note to find out what wolfsbane is.

The Captain releases the console and stands straight. He speaks softly with a hard edge behind it all, "Finally, sir, let me offer you a piece of advice; do not *ever* let me catch you on board a vessel I command unless you have prior authorization and have cleared it with me personally. If it happens again, Commander, I will consider you to be an unlawful intruder, and will treat you and your team as such. Do I make myself perfectly clear?"

Jennings' eyes widen in surprise and Lt. Sh'iraolnas' antennae perk straight up pushed by her thin white eyebrows. Captain Drake does not wait for him to finish whatever reply he might be crafting, "Drake out."

Lt. Moridan is swift to end the transmission and the Andorian has to give her silent credit for being that on the ball. The captain takes a deep breath, then turns to fix his gaze on the tactical station.

"Lieutenant Berk," he addresses the man icily. "I would be very interested to understand how an outside security team could board my ship, arrest one of my department heads, seize an apparently large amount of materials from one of my labs, while neither you nor your staff seemed to either know this was going on, or cared to let me know about it. Perhaps you can gather the facts, and we can have a debriefing after we are under way?"

The lieutenant bears a look that reminds the Andorian scientist of a snow fox she had once witnessed about to be carried away by an avalanche. The softer side of her immediately feels for the poor man.

"Aye sir." Lt. Berk says and then immediately sets about arranging coverage for his station. "Ensign Blackmon, I'll have you take over for me, I have to have a word with the rest of the department."

Mathias turns to the Captain, "Sir, I'll question my security officers and have a report ready for you within the hour. With your permission, of course."

(OCC: Assuming the captain responds in agreement)

The security officer makes his way to the turbolift and Asovil determines that the timing is about right to return to her review of the department's projects, but before she can even turn to her station the turbolift doors open revealing two alien beings that she's not familiar with wearing non-Starfleet uniforms accompanied by what she can only assume are their security escorts.

"Ambassadors," Commander Drake offers a slightly shaky smile. "Thank you for joining us. We will depart Starbase 118 momentarily."

Ambassadors aboard an escort vessel add to the mystery of their assignment as far as Asovil is concerned. She studies the group who had just joined them for a moment that might just press the boundaries of etiquette before abruptly returning to her review work. She's positive that the captain will fill her in when he debriefs her and officially welcomes her aboard. Until then, she knows she's not likely to be called upon for her expertise and that means that she has time to at least review the rather extensive list of project files before making her way to her own department for introductions.

Stardate 2365.02.08 (Monday)
USS Peregrine - Science Lab 1, Deck 4 - 1415

Crewman Lena Pierce Scheuermann sits across the desk from Asovil with his large hands folded in his lap and a slightly hunched posture. The Andorian takes note of the thick, brown hairs across the back of his hands leading into the black of his uniform sleeves and follows the contour of his arms up to his shoulders and neckline where the hair juts out of his collar in small tufts. He's tall. The Andorian estimates that he stands a little over six foot, maybe six one, or two, a fact that causes him to slump a little so as not to draw attention to himself. At least, that's the assumption she's formed. His face is more round than oval and despite the thick hair that obviously covers his body, his head is nearly shaved. The shadow of brown hair that he maintains sits far back on his forehead making his cranium look much bigger than it actually is. He has a prominent nose as well providing him with a bookish appearance.

"I'm Lieutenant Junior Grade Asovil Sh'iraolnas, Mr. Scheuermann. I'm performing these interviews because I will be serving as your commanding officer and I'd like to get to know your strengths and weaknesses." Asovil's antennae move forward intimating her interest in the conversation about to take place. She sits with her hands folded on the desk in front of her, a PADD resting to the right. Crewman Scheuermann's personnel file open on the viewscreen of her desk computer. "Let's start by telling me where you feel your strengths lie."

"Yes, sir," Pierce—he preferred being called Pierce to Lena, which is his mother's name— swallows his nervousness and gives three succinct (though small) nods before continuing. "At the moment, sir, I'm still trying to test into my specialty, but I believe that I do fairly well with botany and biology."

"Did you work at all with Lt. Tesenblen on any of his projects?"

"A bit, but mostly I assisted Ensign Maize."

"When working with Lt. Tesenblen," Asovil lowers her head just a bit to try and peer up into the man's eyes as he keeps looking at the edge of the desk in front of him. "Did you work on any of the projects that were removed from the Botany Lab?"

"No, sir," Pierce shakes his nearly bald head slowly and frowns. "Those were expressly off limits."

"What's left in the Botany Lab to continue work with?" Asovil feels slightly disappointed, but continues to press her interview.

"Oh," Crewman Scheuermann perks up and looks directly into her sapphire eyes for just a moment before awkwardly looking over her left shoulder. "There's still plenty to do in there, sir. Project 2897354, Project 3340091, Project 2234523, and—"

"I see," the lieutenant interrupts, lifting the PADD and keying in a couple of designations. "I'm specifically assigning you to Botany, Mr. Scheuermann. We need a botanist on board now that Lt. Tesenblen is no longer here. I've just assigned you to all of the related projects. Is this something that you feel comfortable with?"

"Yes, sir!"

"Good. I expect a report to be submitted to Ensign Maize by end of Alpha shift 2365.02.15 detailing active experiments' progress, projects that have been removed, and the status of any pending projects waiting on materials or other resources. I also want to see that you've connected with the appropriate scientific groups within the Federation to help you with these experiments, Mr. Scheuermann. Just because I've placed you over the botany projects does not mean that you have, what is it you humans say? Cart belch?"

"Um, carte blanche, sir."

"Yes," Asovil narrows her eyes in disappointment with herself over having missed that particular human phrase. "That.

"I am still reviewing personnel files in detail, Mr. Scheuermann," she continues. "Is there anything that I should be aware of before discovering it on my own?"

"No, sir. Nothing that I can think of."

"One last thing, Mr. Scheuermann."

"Yes, sir?"

"How did you feel about Lt. Tesenblen's arrest?"

The office falls silent with just the ever present hum of a starship in operation barely perceptible in the undertones of the natural room noises. Pierce sniffs and purses his lips in thought, shifting the weight from one side of his rump to the other as he seeks a more comfortable position—a position that is unachievable so long as that question hangs in the air. Asovil remains quiet, studying the near putty-like adjustments to his features, looking for any telltale emotions that seep through during the man's attempt to regain control over his features. After what seems like minutes, but is more likely moments, Crewman Lena Pierce Scheuermann delivers his assessment.

"I think that the whole thing stinks of bureaucracy and corruption, sir." Pierce raises his round face—now steady with resolve—and meets his commanding officer's gaze steadily for the breadth of three blinks before redirecting his eyes to the space over her left shoulder again.

"Bureaucracy and corruption?" Asovil allows her head to tilt slightly to the right, her antennae relaxing their forward pose to settle backward in a curled, almost scorpion tail position. "You intimate that Starfleet is determined to cause problems for Lt. Tesenblen for reasons other than his own failure to maintain proper authorization on dangerous projects? Or, perhaps it isn't just Lt. Tesenblen, but the Peregrine to which you're referring?"

"I don't know, sir," Pierce frowns. "But, the work that Lt. Tesenblen was doing was for the good of all, you know?"

"I don't know, Mr. Scheuermann." Lt. Sh'iraolnas straightens her head and raises her eyebrows to emphasize her comments. "And neither do you. I'll remind you, Crewman, that you do not know the inner thoughts of the lieutenant. You are not a Betazoid, are you?"

"No, sir," he responds sourly.

"Nor are you an Aenar, correct?"

"No, sir."

"Then, I would caution you against pretending to know that which you do not know." Asovil folds her hands and rests them on the desk in front of her once more, having placed the PADD back in its original position. "You are a scientist, Mr. Scheuermann, and scientists do not assume, we theorize and prove."

"Yes, sir."

"I'm glad that we understand each other, Mr. Scheuermann. I look forward to your report." The Science Officer holds her right hand out towards the door, inviting the crewman to consider the interview over and to take his leave of her.

Changes..........

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine; Lt. Reid's Quarters - 1245

John had barely gotten his report sent when Lt Berk's voice came across the comm.

=/\= "Berk to Reid, meet me in my office immediately, we need to talk."=/\=

"Aye sir, I'm on my way." John replied to his CO.

John could tell by Berk's tone that something was up. Having spent time with the Senior Staff Berk would know what was going on with all these changes and could shed some light on the arrest of LT. Tesenblen. John could only suspect that because of their short time together that Berk had not built the trust to inform him of arrest in case he feared John might warn the Science officer. Having both himself and Berk at Ambassador's arrival allowed the Starbase security team to board without his involvement.

Making his way to the level five security section John waited outside the CTO's office for Lt. Berk to arrive.

PO Cook

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine - Sick Bay - 1250

PO Dana Cook strode back into Sickbay and found all of the Nurses awaiting her inspection. Dana walked around and gave a rather cursory inspection; even going so far as to actually swipe her index finger across a table and inspect it as if she might find dust.

"Well," she began as she turned to the nursing staff, "everything is satisfactory. I see Crewman Patel was kind of enough to show you how I expect things to be."

She gazed for a moment at Patel, who appeared nervous, but all she did was nod her approval to him.

"Very Well," PO Cook continued, "The ship is getting underway even as I speak. So we can stand down and I assume you have all had a chance to peruse the Shift schedule. Does anybody have any questions or complaints?"

No one spoke up as she glanced around at them.

"Ok," Dan went on, "Monday Beta shift is now on duty." She glanced at Crewman Patel once more and he nodded acknowledging that he knew he had the duty shift.

"The rest of the New personnel I will expect to interview each of you briefly to ascertain your capabilities and training," She said as she lifted her PADD and glanced at it, "Your records only say so much and don't really tell me what you're really capable of."

Lowering the PADD she looked at them, "You are all dismissed for now. I will summon you when I am ready for you. Pay attention to your shift schedule; memorize it. Don't be late. I will be checking up on each shift so if you have some questions or problems don't hesitate to ask. Be ready in case there is any call for emergency medical treatment. All medical personnel will respond no matter the shift. Understood?"

All of the new nurses nodded, "Yes Sir."

Dana scowled at them, "Sir? Do I look like an officer? No, I work for a living! You will refer to me a Petty Officer."

"Now," She finished, "Go get settled in, and if you have any questions at any time, I am always available. Dismissed!"

Something suspicious is afoot.

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine - CTO's Office - 1250

Mathias exited the turbolift, walking briskly, his mind racing, he hadn't entered damage control mode yet, but someone had gone behind his back and he needed to find out who it was. He turned right down an adjoining corridor to see Lt. Reid standing in front of his office door, waiting. A thought crossed his mind It could be him , Mathias immediately buried the thought, Forget it, he's not that kind of officer, loyal to fault even, assuming I've read him right that is .

"Good afternoon Mister Reid" gesturing toward his now open office door.

(OCC: Assuming Lt. Reid enters ahead of Mathias)

Mathias followed the Lieutenant into the office, the doors swishing faintly behind him as they closed and made for his desk, as he walked he motioned to the other seat, opposite his, on the other side of the desk, "Have a seat, Lieutenant."

(OCC: Assuming Reid sits.)

"Mister Reid we have a problem, someone has gone behind the Captain's back and mine in the rest of Lt. Tesenblen, and now the Captain, understandably, wants answers, and so do I. I want to know who authorized starbase security's spiriting away of the Peregrine's CSO? I'd like you to double check all of the recent transfers for anything g that is even slightly a miss, for all departments, but more specifically, anyone with security authorizations. Lastly I need a list of all on duty security personnel at the time of Tesenblen's arrest, I would like to interview them all."

(OCC: Lt Reid can interject where ever he needs to, I'll edit where necessary)

"I would hope that one of our own isn't willing to throw our captain under the bus, I hope that someone had their arm twisted, or that Commander Jennings' men came aboard through some other sort of subterfuge."

(OCC: Assuming Reid concurs or that he has anything to add.)

"Well then, I'd like to have a report for the Captain put together by the time we're underway, we should both get to work." Mathias finished standing up as he spoke.

(OCC: edit for clarity and also to make it sound less like Mathias hasn't been.doimg his job)

Close The barn Door.........

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine - CTO's Office - 1250

"Good afternoon Mister Reid" Berk gestured toward his now open office door.

"Sir." John took Berk's gesture and stepped into the CTO's office.

Mathias followed the Lieutenant into the office, the doors swishing faintly behind him as they closed and made for his desk, as he walked he motioned to the other seat, opposite his, on the other side of the desk, "Have a seat, Lieutenant."

John could sense the tension in Lt. Berk's voice and manner. John understood the subtleties of body language and took the seat directly in front Berk's desk. He knew this would put Lt. Berk in the superior position and perhaps more at ease.

"Mister Reid we have a problem, someone has gone behind the Captain's back and mine in the arrest of Lt. Tesenblen, and now the Captain, understandably, wants answers, and so do I. I want to know who authorized Starbase security's spiriting away of the Peregrine's CSO? I need a list of all of our new transfers, for all departments, but more specifically, anyone with security authorizations. Lastly I need a list of all on duty security personnel at the time of Tesenblen's arrest, I would like to interview them all."

"Sir, I am guessing that you hadn't had time to see the transfer summery I posted to your bridge report. I had summarized the transfer and added the my comments on possible security risks but there was very little there on the Senior Officers and only few crew, mostly nurses."

"I would hope that one of our own isn't willing to throw our captain under the bus, I hope that someone had their arm twisted, or that Commander Jennings' men came aboard through some other sort of subterfuge."

"If this was orchestrated to undermine Captain Drake then they wouldn't do anything that alert us, but would cover themselves by just staying in regulation. We'd better check that transfer list again."

"Well then, I'd like to have a report for the Captain put together by the time we're underway, we should both get to work." Mathias finished standing up as he spoke.

"Let's check the transfer list again." Reid stepped the Comm and punched in his security code then accessed the transfer list. As the screen scrolled to names of personnel transferred on and off the Peregrine John let a low whistle. "Well there are a few new names here that weren't there fifteen minutes ago when I filed my report to you. It appears three of our security crew had last minute transfers off the boat. Crewman Sinatra and Waddle were assigned the Starbase 118 and were replaced by Rotet and Domms. But look at this, Ensign Thorn Agris was assigned to the Coronado. ,.. I'll bet you dimes to donuts there's where the security team got their access and clearance to the Science section. You and I were preparing for the Ambassadors and Ensign Blackmon was preparing to man the security station on the bridge. Agris was the only security officer not otherwise assigned. He was ambitious but seemed a bit impatient to work his way through the line. I had just chalked it up to immaturity."

John stepped aside to let Lt. Berk view the screen. "Sir, I'm sorry,,.. when Lt. Rockatansky was transferred out he warned me to watch the transfer onto Peregrine but I didn't consider that there may be trouble brewing within. I'd say we need to interview Rotet and Domms but my guess is they were pawns just to make to make these transfers look less suspicious. If you agree I'll start the report for Captain and have these finding ready for you to present in just few minutes,.Sir, being I failed to catch this I'm prepared to face Captain Drake as you see fit."

Lets get to the bottom of this

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine - CTO's Office - 1250

"Let's check the transfer list again." Mathias watched as Reid's fingers danced over the wall panel next to him, pulling up the transfer list, the computer returned a slight chirp acknowledging his secuity code and the names of personnel transferred on and off the Peregrine began to slowly scroll down the screen.

John let a low whistle. "Well there are a few new names here that weren't there fifteen minutes ago when I filed my report to you."

Mathias cut in, "That's not suspect at all..." If they're going to board the ship and take our science officer right from under it stands to reason they aren't above pulling a last minute transfer either.
"It appears three of our security crew had last minute transfers off the boat.

Mathias looked to Reid, raising an eyebrow, "With all of the departure preparations, he easily could have brought the security team aboard and the presence of dozens of other starbase personal would mean no one would have raised so much as an eyebrow. It doesn't look like they sent a replacement either, which leaves us to find someone or go short handed."

John stepped aside to let Lt. Berk view the screen. "Sir, I'm sorry, when Lt. Rockatansky was transferred out he warned me to watch the transfer onto Peregrine but I didn't consider that there may be trouble brewing within. I'd say we need to interview Rotet and Domms but my guess is they were pawns just to make to make these transfers look less suspicious. If you agree I'll start the report for Captain and have these finding ready for you to present in just few minutes,. Sir, being that I failed to catch this I'm prepared to face Captain Drake as you see fit."

Mathias folded his hands on his desk, showing a somewhat tired smile, "I can hardly blame you for not catching something that I missed as well, besides I'm not in the business of throwing subordinates under the bus for personal gain. I'll have a word with our new transfers and any on duty staff that may have seen something if you can compile any relevant security and transfer logs for me. I'll complete the report and present our findings to the captain. Other than that you needn't worry about anything, who ever did this was counting on the somewhat chaotic environment aboard the ship as cover and it worked, we just need to pick up the pieces now."

Bad cop...

Stardate 2365.02.08 (Monday)
USS Peregrine - Science Lab 1, Deck 4 - 1430

Having already met Crewman Thomas Quinn Petra, Asovil wastes no time in introductions, but basically bullrushes the unfortunate scientist the instant he steps foot into her office.

"Seat yourself, Mr. Petra," Lt. Sh'iraolnas points at one of the two chairs opposite her across the glossy desk. "Move," she adds with a sharp tone when he moves too slowly for her taste.

"Now," instruction is directed at the gangly crewman while the Andorian peruses the PADD she picks up as he lopes across the room to awkwardly plant himself in the chair he'd been assigned. "You've yet to declare your specialty." Asovil looks up at him with a severe gaze. "Do you have no ambition, or are you just uncertain as to your qualifications?"

Thomas' mouth opens and closes multiple times before he realizes that this blue-skinned woman isn't about to offer him relief. Stammering ensues, "I've not yet had the opportunity—"

"Do you mean to tell me that you've not yet taken the opportunity, Mr. Petra?" Shaking her head just enough to cause her white hair to bounce about her shoulders, the lieutenant settles back in her chair and waves the PADD at her subordinate. "Do you know what I see in your records, Mr. Petra?"

"No, sir," Thomas mumbles after realizing she isn't going to continue until he acknowledges the question.

"That doesn't surprise me." Leaning forward, Asovil places the portable computer in front of her and laces her fingers together before it. "You have demonstrated mediocrity in everything you've ever attempted within Starfleet, Mr. Petra. A fact that causes me no small amount of consternation."

"Now, that's not fair, sir," the crewman frowns deeply. "I've done the best I could."

"I don't believe that for a second, Mr. Petra." Watching his pathetic demeanor, the Andorian scientist feels an immense flood of pity wash over her like a warm blanket that calms the shivering skin. Setting her jaw, she fights the urge to tell him everything will be all right and instead, attempts to channel one of her Imperial Guard instructors. "You see? I recognized your lack of personal drive the moment I laid eyes on you, Crewman Petra. You practically sweat it from every pore.

"You hunch over, you shuffle your feet, you play at a ridiculous foolishness so that your superiors don't expect too much of you. Your avoidance of responsibility and lack of achievement is evident within your dossier for any who choose to review it, and how you've managed to achieve a position on a starship with such a tactic is absolutely beyond me.

"I'm going to suggest your transfer at the earliest convenience, Mr. Petra. I've no patience, nor room within my department, for such a lackadaisical approach to one's contribution."

With Crewman Scheuermann, Asovil had pried away at his personal security in an effort to see where his loyalties lay and to determine whether the man had any knowledge of the illegal activities Lt. Tesenblen had been undertaking. With Crewman Petra, she has absolutely no doubt that Lt. Tesenblen would have avoided using him in any area of his work that required competence. Petra is a different problem altogether for the department head. She has to figure out what motivates him, and then she has to apply the motivating factor without impunity.

"Sir! I'm begging—I can't—sir, please!" Thomas grips the edge of her desk with both hands and leans forward imploringly.

"I'm afraid there's nothing more to be done about this, Mr. Petra," Asovil settles back in her chair once more and feigns resignation with another shake of her head, her antennae drooping to emphasize the mood. "Unless,"

"Yes? Unless?" A wide-eyed Thomas presses for hope.

"Unless you were to prove to me that you are capable of excellence," Lt. Sh'iraolnas tilts her head slightly and looks at the desktop. "Although, that would require a lot of dedicated hard work, Mr. Petra. I'm not sure you're up to the task."

"No!" Thomas barks. "I mean, yes! Yes I am. Just don't reassign me, sir."

Asovil takes the time to study the man's worried demeanor for a moment. She's aware that she can't save all of them. Some just aren't cut out for the duty. In this case, she hopes that isn't the case. What she had read in the dossier that made her believe Thomas Petra has potential was simply related to heritage. He's the nephew of a Starfleet Admiral whose sister (Thomas' mother) had passed away when he was a child. Admiral Gardner has been instrumental in every one of Thomas' assignments despite subpar performance.

"You aren't listening to me, Crewman Petra," Asovil tiredly reprimands him, pushing the situation just a little further. "This isn't going to be a gravy boat. You are going to really need to apply yourself in order to maintain your position on my team. Do I make myself clear?"

The misuse of the human reference to a gravy train confuses the man for just a moment, "Absolutely clear, Lieutenant."

"Well then, Mr. Petra." Taking the PADD up in a slow, tired motion, the Andorian pressed a couple of buttons. "Seeing how I show absolutely no leanings towards any of the sciences, I will expect you to have submitted a specialty to Ensign Maize within the next five days. And, Mr. Petra?"

"Yes, sir?"

"Make sure that specialty is something of value to this ship and her crew."

"Yes, sir!"
