True or false colours?

Zilvra was sitting at the bar as unremarkable as possible, when the Tengu from last night approached her. "I do not know if you remember me from last night, but I was curious if you had any idea what this was about just now?"
She nodded to him. "I have absolutely no idea. I am hoping, as terrible as it is, that the guards have set up a bounty on someone." She paused, thinking about it. Glancing over to her new acquaintance, she said in a hushed voice, "I am going to ask him. If he doesn't answer straight, and you want work, play along with what I say please." She casually, pulled her cloak off, quickly folded it, and tried to keep it out of most people's eyesight.

The barkeep came out, and offered them something. Holding her head up higher and more confident than she had at all this morning or the previous night, she said, in a regular voice, "Yes, I would like the normal breakfast... as well as to know what those guards were speaking about. The commotion did not seem amicable."

a meal may do some good.

Xai silently agreed to play along, work meant money, and money meant being able to eat meals he doesn't scrounge up in the trash.

When the Dwarf came back and approached Xai followed the lady's lead and ordered something for breakfast, "Bread please, with jam if you have any."

Fugitives? Now what would that mean?

Sirion listened to the responses of those around him and nodded. They confirmed his suspicions. Townsfolk were frequently divided on the nature and quality of the local guard. This town appeared to be no different.

But one comment in particular caught his attention. "Fugitives." The man had clearly said 'fugitives.' That word didn't generally mean the same thing as 'criminal' or 'thief.' Many might consider the Tengu by the bar a thief, but few would use the word fugitive without reason. To be a fugitive in general meant that you were running from something or had escaped from something. What would that mean?

Sirion listened to everything he could and, as usual, tried to absorb it all and give the others the impression that he was just a casually curious stranger. He looked at the man who had made the fugitive comment and asked, "fugitive? A fugitive from what? What is there to be a fugitive from around here? Trepus seems like a nice place."

He listened carefully to the response hoping to find something would give him a clue. He was also curious about the comments about the guards causing trouble. Usually those who disliked a towns leaders and their armed lackeys needed little encouragement to complain. If needed he would prime the pump with a comment about the criminals in the town guard of Westbridge. Whether it was true or not mattered little, the comment was only to keep the people talking. But he would hold his tongue until he heard the response of the first man - there was no need to start a fight amongst the locals.

And then there were the two by the bar. Just what were they up to? Clearly they were up to something. It was becoming a very interesting morning.
