Buried Evil Q&A

This is the official Q&A thread for the D&D game, "The Evil Best Left Buried".

Out of character discussions (i.e. strategy, splitting of treasure, whatever) go here - NOT in the main game thread. Questions to the DM or to other players go here.

Yay and questions

Are the prices for all gear in the 2edition main book the ones to use, or do you have differing prices and such in the area we are adventuring in?

fuhgettaboudit

Don't worry about pricing right now. Assume that your character has a full set of reasonable armor (chain + shield or lower), a primary weapon, a backup weapon, a good supply of necessary ammo (if appropriate), a couple weeks' worth of rations, a good backpack, and the assorted typical adventuring gear you would reasonably own.

You're not new to the adventuring game, so if you want that silk rope, go for it. Don't feel like you have to skimp on the arrows, etc.

That said, Audalis is a low magic world - don't expect to own any enchanted items yet.

getting going

I will likely try to get a "real" intro post up today, even if character sheets are not done. We can get to those, and won't need them immediately

I'm sure I do, somewhere!

But, if you want, you can always check out "Sal's Outfitters" in the Armoury menu, up above... Pretty nicely laid out "store," there, and has info on just about everything you might want/need.

I'll see what I can find as far as a shareable version, though, and wing it out to you when I dig it up.

Good deal!

I do enough shopping there that I feel I should make a commercial...

Introducing your "guide"

Name: Talcanaiion "Talca" Aldavathar

Race: Sylvari

Class: Ranger (Pathfinder)

Alignment: Neutral Good

Languages:
  • Sylvari
  • Apononese
  • Drannese

Physical Description: Talca is, at a glance, easily identifiable as a Syl; tall, lean muscled, and preternaturally graceful. The golden color of his almond-shaped eyes, too, is almost as readily identifiable a Sylvari trait as are the points of his ears. His hair, colored various shades of brown much like the floor of his native forests, is worn long but pulled back and secured by a smattering of thin braids so as not to interfere with his vision. The intricate, leaf, vine, and arrow toolwork of his well-worn leathers do nothing to obscure his heritage, either; nor do the bows and well-stocked quiver of arrows he carries. The machetes, though, to most folk of any species that have so much as heard tales of the Sylvari, the machetes that Talca carries are, indeed, a curious choice of weapon.

Background: Born and raised in the town of Poldora in Londelirinen, Talca spent his early years playing in and exploring Hith Taure (the Misty Forest) and, in doing so, nurtured a great love of "wandering with a purpose." Seeking out and discovering new and alternate routes to and from various destinations, for him, became less and less a hobby or diversion but, something much more akin to a passion. When he was of age, he eagerly apprenticed himself to a lovely, wandering archer, originally from Alloryen, named Merilwen Gabrinil. Under Merilwen's tutelage, Talca became not only a talented archer in his own right, but, also, was afforded numerous opportunities to hone his pathfinding skills. In fact, before the pair finally parted ways just a handful of years ago, Merilwen had come to defer to her apprentice's judgement when it came to finding and navigating their course during and between adventures, as his skill in doing so was almost uncanny.

Even with those skills taken into consideration, though, Meri and Talca went their separate ways when the she-elf was summoned to Ela-Isthtel by the Sylvari Court. The mission that the kingdoms would have her undertake, Meri had told him the night she left, was not one she would care to see Talca endure, besides, the Court had summoned her, and her alone. So it was that, in order to continue feeding his wanderlust and love for exploring, Talca began hiring himself out as a guide and pathfinder to just about any party that would have him, and so it is that he comes to be with his current companions.

Personality: When Talca is "working" he tends to present as your typical Sylvari - quiet, focused, self-assured, even, perhaps, a bit aloof - but, given his choice of occupation, that would almost be expected of anyone of any race. In those times that he's not blazing and scouting the trail ahead of his compatriots, on the other hand, Talca is a bit of a different case. Depending on the individual perceptions and prejudices of those who have travelled with him, the Syl pathfinder has been alternately described as snarky, arrogant, sarcastic, and, from time to time, funny. In all his years travelling with Meri and, also, in the years that have followed, Talca has been exposed to all types - from the gruff, glowering, never-speak-more-than-a-syllable-to-a-point-ear sort, to those that saw Syls as exotic and exhilarating and would never stop talking if you did - and, as a result, has come to the decision that people weren't much different from paths. Every once in a while you'll encounter part of one that surprises you, but you can't let it change who you are or where you're going, so, you continue being you and find your way over or around that off-putting obstacle and arrive at your destination all the happier for it in the end.

The Shield Maiden of Falloes

Name: Miraenya "Rae" Filythian

Race: Sylvari ( Please note that she generally hides her pointed ears by either headband or helm )

Class: Paladin

Alignment: Neutral Good

Physical Description: Rae does not hide her pointed ears to lie about her heritage; it's because she recognizes that a human in need would probably be more willing to accept aid from someone they at least think could be human rather than another race. She is still taller than most human women, but her armour and gear are of human make, further obscuring her race. Only the telltale grace and the angular features of her face give her away under closer inspection. Her earthen hued hair is cut short for practicality, and her almond shaped eyes are of similar colour.

Background: Hailing from the southern Sylvari kingdom, the house of Filythian was a noble house. That was not to say that they could be traced to the crown, but rather, the main branch had a long history of fulfilling the role of Councillor for their area. When the family merged with the Aethirnae line through marriage, it was seen as a bit controversial. The Aethirnae line was known for having strong warriors, not for their wisdom, and some questioned the decision on the basis of if warrior blood would taint the wisdom shown by the Filythian line. For Miraenya's father, this proved to be true. As Councillor, he was unfortunately known for having a short temper for a Sylvari, and prone to making whimsical decisions. It was decided that he needed to be removed from his position.

And so, in light of misfortune both political and natural, she left. Miraenya journeyed from her homeland to the White City. The journey was not only to put misfortune behind her, but to see for herself the innovations she had heard of in the City, and perhaps find new purpose.

As a Sylvari traveling through a Human majority, it brought the dark sides to leaving her homeland forward. Distrust, even bitterness from some strangers. In general, they didn't want much to do with Miraenya. But that suited her just fine, she didn't want much; she was just going from one place to another. She never hid that fact, nor the fact that she didn't have much to return to if she did turn back. It was a humbling journey, for one as comparatively old as she was to be so out of place, learning new customs, faces, and hearts.

Miraenya would often find more refuge among the religious from the more xenophobic populous during her journey. Recovering emotionally from her misfortune, she paid particular respects towards Lysora, Oriana, and Shinara. Prayer to Lysora, in healing her heart. Prayer to Oriana, to find new passion. Prayer to Shinara, for fortune in her journey.

Eventually, she was finally introduced, in a manner of speaking, to Falloes. Having avoided seedier parts of cities in order to avoid making trouble, where his ordinary looking temples commonly were, it was only when she first got to the White City that she encountered a practitioner. Or, rather, that a practitioner encountered her.

It was perhaps the lowest part on her journey. Miraenya was unsure of if she had enough savings to get by, having just been robbed of most of it, and was taking refuge at a tavern and conjoined in, sitting to the side, by herself. Suddenly, a old man in robes sat beside her. Looking up, she found his eyes bore her no ill will. He offered to lend an ear if she needed someone to talk to. When she asked why, he simply said that it looked like she was lost, or perhaps needed a friend. Miraenya agreed that it would be nice to have a friend.

It wasn't a long friendship, as the man didn't have much time left, but it changed her. Miraenya was no priestess, given the prowess of battle in her ancestry, so she took up the shield, offering her services to both Falloes and the Ertain military. Naturally, she was only kept as part of the reserves due to her race, but she didn't mind. Her life was renewed.

Personality: Although she retains a certain air of formality or nobility, she is more down to earth than the generally encountered Sylvari, another reason why she can be mistaken for human at times. Rae is warm and kind, in keeping with her faith and the shield that she wields. Yet there is also a fierce passion in her as well - the desire to protect and assist both her allies and those in need. That is not to say that she won't also wield her sword as needed, but that isn't her priority. She may be able to cut down evil, but her role is to protect others so that together they may be able to defeat greater evil than that which any of them may be able to do alone.

* * *

As a side note, I don't actually have her character sheet, and it's not likely Rae would have gone into all of the details of her background unless someone specifically asked outright. This is mainly because she focuses on the present and moving forward rather than her past.

Also wow, I didn't think I wrote quite that much for Miraenya, but when I compile it all together... yep that's a lot of text. For other players, please do not feel intimidated by the amount of text I have. I've always had a tendency to go overboard with designs, just ask Eol or Olan.

Hello here's PEPPER

Julia "Pepper" Montgomery

What YOU know:
* She has a lute that is old and split, held together with twine, glue, and luck.
* She can play and knows a fair many funny tales.
* She is totally a bard. TOTALLY.
* She has a habit of stabbing things to death if they deserve it.
* She wears the most god awful mixed clothing.
* She carries around a crude holy symbol of most faiths, but doesn't really pray to any. It's "Just In Case" faith.
* She is really not a bard. Maybe. Sorta? No she is. Wait. She just stole a chicken and that guy never noticed...
* She's great at disguises, tumbling, and entertaining.
* She has found ways to get her coin back after buying something and calls it taxation taxing.

STR: Pretty strong, arm wrestle at your PERIL! Check out the Guns! *flex*
DEX: Kills flies with chopsticks.
CON: She tries to put up a good fight with colds...
INT: She seems smart enough to know when she's out-swindeled.
WIS: She seems to know when not to repeat stupid things, for the third time.
CHA: Here for the song, stayed for the conversation!

Alias:

* Pepper the Bard in Ertain
* Rose the Troubadour in Coria
* Mocker in the thieves' guilds (where ever those are!)

Born into service, Julia like her family worked in the orchards of Lockshir in Ertain. She had many a grand dream of what the future would be, chasing the boys with swords and coming up with witty quips to tease. She had a fancy with words, something that led her into a fair few problems. Whenever she could skip away, she dressed up as a lad and went with the caravans to drop off deliveries to the Naymir Vineyards and small towns about.

Eventually this little trick got her into a right awful mess as the caravan she last ran off with in her teens sought the city of Ethryn.

The caravaners weren't too happy to find the lad a lass, leaving her in the city. Soon enough the witty mind and quick fingers urged her to snag food for her tummy. Then a place to sleep. Only to wake in the middle of the night by an older rogue finding a sneak thief in his turf.

Kresser the QuickBlade revealed himself, angry and grumpy at finding the girl. He took her in, and gave her a place, but the cost was apprenticeship and a tenure of years with a cut of her profits. And Julia quickly learned she had a fantastic skill at it!

From a tender teen age well to twenty years, she learned how to use blades and swords at Kresser's side. How to pick out a mark. How to break and enter. How to sense a trap be it built or ambush of people. She's had a few bad moments, earning a scar over her right eyebrow. The danger though is more a thrill, to not be caught or once caught to get free and gloat about it.

Life was excellent. She enjoyed playing the life of a bard as a cover, the true talents of a rogue, giving a cut to Kresser, and spending away her own coin. She decided to get her hands on some great treasure, a pretty thing bought and not stolen. And that meant coin. So she took a mark unlike any other, worth more than the rest, to kill a man. She kept thinking of it as nothing more than a theft gone badly, until seeing him with his family, the happiness so much like the family she left behind. It killed her inside as she slid the blade into his throat.

She left immediately, running from the city, from that life, the moment he gurgled his last. For years she ran using different names to different towns and cities across a couple of nations. Now she is back in Ertain, hoping the past forgot her, and a tad bit older if not wiser for the journey.

The Scam: She pretends to be a bard! She has a lute, can play it, and knows many tales. She may even have some skill in it. But her true talents are as a rogue. The bardic in her is just a cover, a fantastic way for people to tell her secrets and let her in.

Personality: She enjoys the public eye, transforming into a talkative and jesting sort. She's quick to tease and play the lute, always has some story about a situation. Her true self is a bit more somber and thoughtful, though only a rare few friends see that, and sometimes the bartender that gets her sauced.

Appearance: Julia has shoulder length blonde hair and hazel eyes. She keeps a braid or two in her hair, a jaunty cap with rooster feathers typically on her head. She wears a mix of mismatched dyed leathers and blouses, all bright and cheery, with wear and tear of her journeys. She has a few daggers and thin blades tucked within the leathers and boots, a sword at her side.

Fighting Style: Longer the sword, the closer to heaven. She fights with long swords named Ol One Eye and Out Back. "Looks like you need go on Out Back." *STAB* Yeah she's a hoot! She also loves tumbling in and out of people, trying to steal some tasty snack or coin along the way. Killing though is not her aim unless the person is truly dastardly. Someday this will changed. Someday the swords will mete out ends for sheer folly of endings. But not yet. Not just yet.

Oh right specifics:
Rogue...I had you going there right right?

Reading novels is fun

These look like fantastic characters! Writing novels is fun, don't worry at all.

On a side note about how Yana posts:
I'll be careful to let folks know when the character is thinking (italics and no quotes) and talking (normal looking dialog). Sometimes I think it's fun to type out the inner thoughts. Especially if someone has some serious skills in reading faces or whatever.
