WhiteHorse Military Base, Antarctica - 1322

Charlie is able to pull up the dossiers on the two new team members - nothing special (for this team)... two more well trained, seasoned combat vets with specialties (demolitions and grenadier) that round out the team quite nicely.

At first, Chogan seems reluctant to take Chief Blake to the hanger - it is a classified area, after all. However, Charlie proves to be persuasive; her own security clearance, her rank, her quirkiness, and (probably not the least) her femininity prove enough to convince the young man to take her to hanger six.

When the pair arrive at the hanger, the private holds a finger up to his lips to motion the need for quiet, and gestures for Charlie to stay put. After just a few steps, a voice calls out, "Halt!", followed by the ominous click of an assault rifle being readied for fire.

Chogan chuckles in response. "Jackie, when are you gonna cut that chickenshiite out, man? Who do you think's gonna come in here, the penguins?"

Another private steps out of an alcove, grinning at Chogan. "Chris, you know that Carrolton would skin me if he didn't think I took this seriously. What do you want?"

Chogan plays the part, smooth as butter. "Just lookin' to bum a smoke, man. You got any?"

The guard rolls his eyes as he reaches into a pocket. "Again? You know you can't smoke it here."

"So come outside and smoke one with me. Ain't nobody gonna sneak past you in five minutes' time."

The guard looks back and forth, then nods. The two soldiers file outside, giving Blake five minutes to inspect the hanger.

****************

The hanger is quiet and dark. Using her light, Blake quickly starts moving through the numerous dusty shelves, until she arrives at a nondescript alcove with a small sign that reads 'ARF36'. Dominating the small space, a large metallic freezer sits, humming softly. Scraping away the dust and frost on the freezer’s glass portal, Charlie stares amazed at the contents winthin: the frozen corpse of a monster.

The creature measures almost seven feet in height, and is covered with long, thick, shaggy white hair. It bears many simian features, but it is clearly more than a simple white ape.

Suddenly, Charlie can hear the creak of the outer door, and knows her time is up. Heart pumping, the chief makes her way to safety moments before the guard returns.

time to take off

May 8th, 2025
WhiteHorse Military Base, Antarctica - 1630

GM's note: figured there was no need to drag this out forever. If you've missed something, we can backpost, but I say it's time to get this show on the road!
Right before sixteen hundred hours, Chogan is dispatched to the barracks to let you know that your chopper is ready to go. "Better hoof it, guys... command says another storm'll be rolling in soon," he tells you.

A half hour later, the entire team (and your gear) are stowed inside a UH-60S Black Hawk combat assault helicopter. The Black Hawks are beginning to be phased out these days, but their long and distinguished service record sees many still in use throughout the globe... and the pentagon apparently sees no need to upgrade at the bottom of the earth. A Lieutenant Hagar grins a greeting as you strap in.

The earth falls away behind you, and soon, all signs of civilization are gone. Hagar navigates the featureless white waste by aid of instument, humming along tunelessly to a radio playing 1980's hair metal.

Twenty odd minutes into your flight, he signals. "We'll be to the LZ before long... folks, there's another storm coming in. I have enough time to drop you off and skidaddle before it hits, so I can't hang around."

You watch as Hagar again rechecks his instruments. "I’m still not picking up the station’s beacon. But it should be right over the next ridge."

You peer through the cockpit window, anxious to see something else beside the endless plains of ice and snow below.

The lieutenant gasps in amazement.

Below you, the station at last comes into view, but nothing like you expected. A shimmering blue dome encompasses the station, as well as the ice field surrounding it. Flickering beneath the swirling blue colors you spy a silent Antarctic Research Facility 36.

"I can’t get any readings from inside that barrier," the pilot states, "but it doesn’t look solid." He points to the snowfall passing through the field. "It also looks like the station still has power. But I’m not going to risk landing inside that blue thing. I can drop you off on that ridge over there. But you have to decide soon; I need to get moving."

Backpost

Charlie had just dismissed Hart and Inga both from her mind to read the personnel files when Kane sidled up to her bunk and asked to speak with Hart. Charlie blinked in surprise but again found herself drawn back to the information in front of her. She¡¦d just been about to bring the laptop over to the lieutenant when Kane re-entered the barracks and strode over to the Lt.

"SIR!! As senior NCO of this unit I must apologize for Cpl Hart's disgraceful attitude towards you as an Officer of the United States Military and I promise it will not happen again."

Blake just watched with astonishment as the big man then saluted her.

"Ma'am I wish to apologize once again for the demeanor of both Cpl Hart and myself, neither he nor I will disrespect you again. With your leave Ma'am."

"As you were, Sargeant," she drawled back at him, a touch of the Midwest invading her speech. "If that was "disrespect" to you, you've never been to the bars I frequent! I guess that's not surprising, you'd kinda stick out like a sore thumb. Anyway, you do what you gotta do to protect the honour of the Rangers, Sarge, but I'm a big girl and can take care of myself. I'll straighten out anyone who crosses one on my lines, um-kay? So, uh, dismissed!"

Once the Sarge moved away, presumably to heap some fresh hell on the hapless Hart, Blake brought her laptop over to the lieutenant. "The dossiers on Hart and Pearson, sir. Oh, and I took the liberty of converting the blueprints for the ARF into a three-dimensional walkthrough. Just click on an entry point on the map and use the arrows to move through the complex. Just close the laptop when you're done, I'll secure it before we hop. I'm guessing you and the Sarge'll want to make some plans about how to head in? I'll let you take it all in, then. Permission to check out the "objects" from the ARF?"

(Assuming permission is granted, otherwise the DM's post never happened, hehe)

Once she was out of the barracks, Blake skipped along behind Chogan, relieved to be away from Kane for a while. Lordy, but the man was wound tight! It was a seven day's wonder the fellow hadn't had a coronary by now. She amused herself on the rest of the walk by calculating how much sass she'd have to lay on in order to provoke a pulmonary infarction in a relatively young, healthy man like the Sarge.

When the pair arrive at the hanger, the private holds a finger up to his lips to motion the need for quiet, and gestures for Charlie to stay put. The tech listens as Chogan talkes the guard into a smoke outside and mentally promises the private a firm hug as a reward.

The hanger is quiet and dark. Using her light, Blake quickly starts moving through the numerous dusty shelves, until she arrives at a nondescript alcove with a small sign that reads 'ARF36'. Dominating the small space, a large metallic freezer sits, humming softly. Scraping away the dust and frost on the freezer's glass portal, Charlie stares amazed at the contents within: the frozen corpse of a monster.

She waits in her hidey spot until Chogan returns and she grimaces at the smell of hoarfrost and cigarette smoke, but grabs the private by both arms and pulls him into a hug before he can react. "Thanks, sweetie, I owe you big time! That's some weird hoodoo back there, you're aces for letting me talk you into bringing me here."

With the ease of practice, Charlie freed herself just as the surprised private began to tighten his grip on her. With a cheery wave, she headed back to the barracks to report in.

(OOC: Once back at the barracks, she'll wait for the Lt. to notice her, then report what she saw in a low voice. She'll let it be his decision whether to tell the others. Will post more on the weekend once the LT posts! )

We are only as successful as our intel.

Monty rested on his back face towards the darker recesses of the cold ceiling, eyes unseeing, closed as his mind's eye ventured forth on projected outcomes of their mission. There were paths in those winding avenues where they encountered nothing but a downed communication relay. Darker lanes came to dead ends--horrible scenes of blood and violence reaped upon the researchers by cabin fever. Less traveled were the dusty trails where upon one or more of his team came home in a body bag: himself included. Statistically speaking at least two of them were doomed. Monty had buried three people he was responsible for in his career, and had attended more funerals than he cared to count. His wasn't the safest of professions.

After a while his wrist watch alarm sounded and the lieutenant rose smoothly, fluidly, from his respite. With half-lidded eyes, the countryboy surveyed the room taking in the positioning of each member, including the apparent trouble-seeking new addition and Silent Bob. Sweeping a hand over the top of his nearly bald head, Monty acknowledged Blake's approach with a nod towards her laptop. He'd set it next to the cot when he'd finished reviewing the dosiers. He quickly realized that the laptop was playing second fiddle to the news the Goth had to relay.

"Naw," he drawled in a quiet county manner, his brow raised and his lips twisted at the obvious joke being played on him. The CO takes a nap and the team has a little fun with him. Classic--the Chief's expression held as she lifted the laptop and settled it into her bag.

"Naw," Monty said again, looking about at the others for confirmation of the joke. When each person remained locked in their own attention his brow came together. "You're serious?"

The confirmation unsettled him. "F-in' abominable snowman?" Again, Blake confirmed with the panache he'd already come to associate with her. "Is there proof I can see?" He'd never had a team member dislike him enough to try and screw him over with the Brass, but he'd known plenty of officers who had ad didn't plan on letting it happen to him. For some reason scenes from Planet of the Apes played through the back of his mind. God, how he used to think that movie was so cool, what with the whole "dirty ape" speech by Heston. The remake hadn't done it justice, and Monty couldn't really believe in snow apes anyway; he was, after all, an Army Ranger. Unfortunately, as he thought about the information the chief had just brought him and the likelihood that she'd mistaken the corpse of a polar bear for that of an ape he realized that if the base commander had sat them in his office with the full knowledge of whatever it was hanging out in his storage facility--under guard--and hadn't brought it to their attention, he was about as likely to show them upon request as Blake was of being caught in a formal gown. Did that mean he knew how to approach the subject with the rest of the team? Hell no!

With the suddenly vicious image of a rather large, white beast with blood encrusted, clawed hands dragging all of their decapitated heads down one of those dark alleys in his head, the lieutenant brought Kane and Blake together to plan their entry in more detail. For the time being, he kept the information to himself, sharing a look with the Chief that he hoped illustrated his indecision on the matter. As they were led to the helicopter he still hadn't made up his mind. It wasn't until they saw the strange blue field that his decision was made.

"Put us down there!" he called, pointing to a spot about fifty meters from the edge of the glow on the east side, a place where a snow dune would offer them some cover from the white-swept compound.

Once the were grounded and gathered into their fire teams Monty had them all take a knee on the snow.

"Some crazy sh** going on here boys and girls. This blue glow-park ain't the half of it neither. I don't know if they've been expiramenting on monkeys here or what, but--" he quickly relayed Blake's find to the rest of the group. "This don't change how we go in. We gow in hot, expecting trouble, and covering each other's asses. Got it?

"Good. Team one will sweep the southern hemisphere. Team two will take the north. Secure the buildings' main floor only, and regroup int the main facility's lobby in one hour.

"Now, unless Chief Blake has anything to add concerning what this blue igloo is; we move out."

Going in...

The lieutenant, understandably, has some trouble taking in Blake’s news and she simply gazes at him, her expression serious as he works his way from semi-amused disbelief to shocked near-acceptance.

It didn’t sit easy with him. "F-in' abominable snowman? Is there proof I can see?" he asked, plainly pleading with Blake to let go of the joke.

“I’m sorry, sir, I’m not hosing you. Not on something that matters to MY health and well-being,” Charlie responds, and the lieutenant, briefly, sees a flash in her eyes of the scared but defiant teenager she must have been on the day of her arrest.

“It’s no bear, either. I designed a bone identification program to help FBI field agents tell the difference between human, ursine, deer and simian remains, and this ain’t bear. Not enough of a snout and too much braincase…not human, but apelike. Maybe even some intelligence. As for proof, I wish I’d taken a snap with my PDA, but there wasn’t time…I shouldn’t have been there in the first place, and I don’t think you’re Chogan’s type.”

The lieutenant threw her a look at that, and she knew to be quiet from that point. He’d need to chew it over and they had time before they got there. Charlie spent the time on the Heli with her eyes closed, walking through the ARF’s map in her head.

The chopper set them down as per the looey’s instructions and the team gathered around him as he shared the news of Charlie’s find. If anyone looks at her, she’ll simply nod confirmation, but won’t defend her decision to not blurt it out to the team earlier.

Charlie spoke up at that point. “I have no idea what it could be, I’ve seen some early designs on force fields but nothing that’s gone past blue-sky dreaming, frankly. Could be electrical, and our boots are steel-toed and hobnailed. One of us’d better take the thermarest from our sleeping bags - it’s rubber – and slide it along the ground so we can walk on it as we pass through the barrier…that should prevent grounding if the barrier is electrical. (OOC: that’s assuming we have that in our sleeping kits, but seemed like reasonable survival gear…I can edit out if necessary)

“Boss, you want us to all go in the main entrance then split to recon? There are several emergency exits we could circle around to and not go in the main way. If the personnel tried to evacuate, those entrances may be breached and we can enter without me having to code us in at each point.”

Blake stops at that point, waiting for a response and keeping more body heat from escaping out her mouth.

Following Orders

Kane stood at attention as he presented his apology to W/O Blake and was not too surprised at her response.

"As you were, Sergeant," she drawled back at him, a touch of the Midwest invading her speech. "If that was "disrespect" to you, you've never been to the bars I frequent! I guess that's not surprising, you'd kinda stick out like a sore thumb. Anyway, you do what you gotta do to protect the honor of the Rangers, sarge, but I'm a big girl and can take care of myself. I'll straighten out anyone who crosses one on my lines, um-kay? So, uh, dismissed!"

“Thank you ma’am”

As he left and moved towards the hanger he could not help but think once again on the lack of the W/O’s military decorum. To allow Cpl Hart to get away with his clear disrespect of her as an officer worried him as to how she would handle herself out in the field. Thank god she was on the Lt’s fire team.

Kane entered the hanger to find Cpl Hart waiting for him his gear ready for inspection. Upon seeing him the Cpl came to attention.
(If not I will back post my actions due to that)
“Ok Cpl your gear looks good, I want to be sure your weapons are cleaned and ready to go as such you will spend the next 2 hours till take off cleaning your weapons, Dismissed”

With a last look at the Cpl, Kane moved out and began a check of all the other troopers to make sure all was ok with them. With this all taken care of he finally relaxed, checked his own gear, and then took a quick nap.
(Fast forward to aircraft)

Kane his eyes half closed, his mind relaxed came to full awareness with the Lt’s command of where to land.

“Ok you all heard the Lt we land in a few minutes, I want a last gear check, make sure your weapons are loaded and safe‘d. After you check your own kit I want each of you to check the gear of the man next to you. Once we hit the ground weapons off safety and team 2 form up on me.”

Once they were grounded and gathered into their fire teams the Lt had them all take a knee on the snow and gave his next orders.

"Some crazy sh** going on here boys and girls. This blue glow-park ain't the half of it neither. I don't know if they've been experimenting on monkeys here or what, but--" he quickly relayed Blake's find to the rest of the group. "This don't change how we go in. We go in hot, expecting trouble, and covering each other's asses. Got it?

"Good. Team one will sweep the southern hemisphere. Team two will take the north. Secure the buildings' main floor only, and regroup into the main facility's lobby in one hour. Now, unless Chief Blake has anything to add concerning what this blue igloo is; we move out."

With that the W/O put in her 2 cents.

“I have no idea what it could be, I’ve seen some early designs on force fields but nothing that’s gone past blue-sky dreaming, frankly. Could be electrical, and our boots are steel-toed and hobnailed. One of us better take the thermarest from our sleeping bags - it’s rubber – and slide it along the ground so we can walk on it as we pass through the barrier…that should prevent grounding if the barrier is electrical. If the personnel tried to evacuate, those entrances may be breached and we can enter without me having to code us in at each point.”

At this point Kane waited for the Lt to make any changes to his orders based on Blake’s observation.
(if no changes)

“Ok team two on me, Hart your on point, then myself , Johannsen and Sgt Lee on rear guard. Move out north Cpl.”

With that done fire team two moved out....

Sgt Lee was more than ready when the order came to move out. He had all his gear ready and was sitting on the edge of one of the bunks running a white cloth along the blade of his sword. His head snapped up and he moved quickly to his feet as he sheathed his sword on his back. He was already dressed in his Artic gear and armor, shouldering his pack and grabbing his carbine he moved out with the others to the transports looking eager for action.

Once they were grounded and gathered into their fire teams Monty had them all take a knee on the snow.

"Some crazy sh** going on here boys and girls. This blue glow-park ain't the half of it neither. I don't know if they've been expiramenting on monkeys here or what, but--" he quickly relayed Blake's find to the rest of the group. "This don't change how we go in. Ape-like creatures? Lee wondered what strange things the government was working on down here. Or if this was something from space? He didn’t really care, his mission was to kill things and he was sure that these things would die just as well as a human.

His safety was off the second his feet hit the ground and he scanned the area on his side. He didn’t worry about the rest of the area, he was confident that everyone was doing their duty and were also scanning their own areas. He formed up with Sgt Kane and nodded when given the order to bring up the rear.

He let the others in Team 2 move out ahead of him and wrapping a heavy wind-cloth around his face so only his eyes were visible behind his goggles, he followed them keeping a constant vigil on both sides and the rear. If he spotted anything unusual he would immediately call out an alarm. As he walked he had to wonder about that strange glow ahead, some type of shield or something; maybe some countermeasure to contain the problem, these ape-like creatures perhaps. He had no doubt that they would soon find out, and he would be ready.

Answer.

"Take the emergency exits. We'll end at the entrance."

Once everyone was ready, Lt. Kernan ordered his line up and the team moved out to the south with Monty taking point, Pearson on second, Blake third, and Hatherford bringing up the rear.

Inga

Inga had taken time to study the map carefull committing as much as she could to memory. The visual memory was pretty good it is what had helped her a lot in school. If she had seen it and studied it she mostly remembers it. She put the map away in her breast pocket. Relying on just memory was not always the seat thing to do. It went back to that old saying being prepared was half the battle.

In that same vain she follow the Sg.t orders to check her gear over make sure her guns had clips in and the safeties on--at least until they hit the ground. Then it was safeties off. It took Inga only a bit longer thatn the rest because she had not only her own pack but the med pack to go through.

That done Inga turns to Staff Sgt. Kane. "Staff Sgt, I've finished checking my gear will you look over mine while I look over yours?" Inga picked up both of her packs and brought them over to him carring her rifle over one shoulder and her sidearm in the holster for now. Her dagger is also in its sheath fastened in to prevent it loss.

we're going in!

May 8th, 2025
Antarctic Research Facility, Antarctica - 1706

Lieutenant Hagar sets down on the ridge, and the two fire teams immediately hit the ground running and fan out into defensive positions - Fort Benning would be proud. The pilot provides you with several smoke flares and a powerful mid range transmistter that should be able to reach WhiteHorse, no matter the weather or interference. With a wave, he departs, and soon, the Black Hawk is nothing but a memory.

Speaking of weather, it is truly, bitterly, horrifically cold. the arctic gear you wear is obviously helpful, but the wind and subzero temperatures quickly make the almost mile trek from the LZ to the base unbearable.

The team follows Blake's suggestion, but aside from a slight tingling sensation when crossing the blue barrier, nothing seems to be amiss. The light is slightly distorted inside of the blue dome, but that is all that seems odd - the bitter cold is still ever present.

The two fire teams split and move as per the looey's orders, but by the time they reach the specified exit doors, everyone (expect for Sergeant Lee) is fatigued from the terrible, killing cold. Of course, there is no time for fatigue, and no option, so the teams press on.

**********************

May 8th, 2025
Antarctic Research Facility, Antarctica - 1739
Fire Team A

Fire Team A discovers a steel door firmly set into the side of ARF36, adorned with red stenciling stating "EMERGENCY EXIT ONLY. ALARM WILL SOUND."

The door has to be partially dug out from the snow, and is not overly willing to open, but eventually does. Naturally, an alarm does indeed sound, though it cuts off approximately thirty seconds after being closed. No one inside appears to have noticed the alarm.

The fire team enters the facility via the emergency exit northeast of the garage, to find themselves within a small hallway. The lighting is active, though there are no signs of current habitation.

To the left are two doors - nothing but storage closets containing as assortment of hand tools, solvent cleaners, an odd spark plug, several short lengths of chain, and a spare can for diesel fuel.

To the right is an open doorway leading into what is marked on the map as the "Workshop/Rec Room". A few tools are scattered here, but clearly, the Rec portion is the focus of the room. A large, comfortable sofa dominates the center of the room, where it sits facing a game console and television. A ping pong table stands against the wall in a folded up position. Various pinup style posters featuring scantily clad women adorn the walls, as do also a few motivational posters.

**********************

May 8th, 2025
Antarctic Research Facility, Antarctica - 1739
Fire Team B

Fire Team B discovers a similar entrance door - except for the fact that this door has been torn from its hinges and cast aside, where it juts out of the drifting snow. The open doorway leads into the south entrance foyer, which would normally be a relatively unremarkable room, were it not for the missing door and resultant snowdrift covering the floor.

Four steps into the room, Hart holds up a hand, signalling a halt. The team then sees what he has - a large, fur-covered hand sticking up out of the snow inside of the room.

A quick dusting off reveals the body of a huge (approximately seven and a half feet tall, easily four to five hundred pounds) apelike creature covered with long, shaggy white fur. It's frozen face is contorted into a mask of pain, most likely a result of the multiple bulletholes the corpse is riddled with.

Brrrrr... it's cold in here...

As they leave the drop point, Sgt Lee will take the transmitter that Lt. Hager gives them since he is an experienced Comm operator, unless the LT, Staff Sgt or Chief object. He secures the gear with his other stuff to protect it as best as he can from the harsh blizzard conditions.

As they trudged through the harsh bitter wind towards the ARF building, Sgt Lee kept a alert eye on the rear of the team. He wasn’t surprised he didn’t see anything, it was too damn cold out here for man or beast, even fur covered ape-like ones, and the heavy winds would blow away any signs of passage within a few minutes.

When they passed through the blue barrier he shivered at the tingling sensation, it gave him and eerie feeling and he couldn’t help wonder what caused this barrier. If it was a force field it didn’t seem to stop them from getting past. Maybe it wouldn’t let them leave he thought and before he went on after the others he reached back through the barrier with his left hand just to see if it would let his hand pass through it again.

When Fire Team 2 reached the southern emergency entrance Lee noticed the others in the group seemed to be suffering more from the bitter cold then he was at the moment. He was cold no doubt, but the others seemed to be having trouble walking and were dragging their feet. They needed to get inside and get warm before they all died from this cold.

When they came to the entrance and saw the torn out door, Lee walked over to the door and quickly appraised the damaged door and then walked to the door frame trying to ascertain if the door was ripped outwards or inwards before it was tossed out in the snow.

As the first member of the team entered the facility, Le kept his eyes on the outside till he heard someone moving snow around and he peeked inside and watched as Hart uncovered the large furred ape-like creature they were told about on the ride here.

“Well, at least we know that bullets will kill them,” he smirked and said to the others before turning his attention back to the rear of the team and the outside blowing snow.

So much for "strapping farm-boy"...

It was f*@%ing Cold.
The wasn't really another way of putting. Despite the specialized arctic warfare suit the army had given him, Denes felt the cold dig deep into his marrow.

This is the type of cold you call with a capital C. Cold. Denes thought as his team made it's way to facility.

Cold was a much the enemy as anything else they'd face today, and as Denes felt his breath freezing against his protective gear, felt his strength being sapped out his veins, he knew he would have to be vigilant against this foe. Keep pushin', man. Keep pushin'.
Denes kept pace behind the Lieutenant, his trained eyes alert for hidden dangers. When they came to the emergency exit, the private made quick work of the snow drift blocking the door, eager for the shelter the research facility would provide.

Making their way into the facility, Denes nearly said a pray to the Lord Almighty for the blessings of heat. He didn't worry much about the alarm sounding off. Denes piped up, to noone in particular, "Hopefully, them scientists will be showing up in just a moment, tell us they need some help with their comm unit and show us to some good food, hey? That'd be nice."

Coming up to the Rec Room, Denes looked to the Lieutenant for directions. "Want us to do a thorough sweep of the room, sir?"

On your six, sir!

Man oh man, oh man, but it’s freaking cold…. Charlie shivered within her so-called cold gear and tried to remember if she’d ever been this cold before. There was that winter in Karlstad, Minnesota when Momma decided Charlene had been “wayward” and locked her in the garage overnight with nothing but her underclothes and a Bible….

Charlie pushed away the trip down memory lane and concentrated on putting one foot in front of the other, telling herself that Pearson made a fine wind block with that broad back of his. It seemed like forever, but slowly, the facility made itself appear through the ice crystals forming on Charlie’s eyelashes.

Pearson made short work of the snowdrift blocking their way and the door was opened soon enough. Charlie noted the lack of reaction to the alarm, but concentrated on moving in and getting clear of the others to cover whatever sector the LT motioned to her. She paused long enough to haul off gloves and warm her hands with exhaled breath and friction before drawing her weapon, holding it two-handed and in front of her. The muzzle tracked her line of sight as she swept the room visually, waiting the command to move forward.

Back at the base and even at Whitehorse, Charlie had been casual and flippant, but all that remained of that girl was the makeup and the hardware piercing her eyebrow and ears. This Blake was alert and focused, though still shivering with the effects of cold and fatigue.

Cold you call this cold!! Suck it up troopers!!

BACKPOST
As Kane made ready to move out of the helo upon its landing he was approached by Cpl Johannsen.

"Staff Sgt, I've finished checking my gear will you look over mine while I look over yours?"
“Yes of course Cpl”

Turning her back to him he checked that her ruck, weapons, and arctic gear were intact and that all her equipment was in the right areas. A moment later she did the same to him, noticing the extra knife in his boot, a Gerber MK II, the extra field med kit in his pack and two extra pairs of thermal socks.
With a raised eyebrow she declared him set and with a knowing smile he did the same.
Within a few moments with that done both waited for the helo to descend.

PRESENT
As Fire Team B moved out he heard the Lt place himself at the point position of his team and had to turn back a moment to speak to him.

“Lt with all due respect you should not be on point if you go down from a boobie or ambush that would leave your team and us without a CO. Standard military and Op training stresses that very fact as point is always the most dangerous spot on a patrol But that’s up to you sir, your team, your call”

With Cpl Hart on point Fire Team B made good time across the frozen ground towards the Research Facility and though the air around them seemed somehow colder then normal still they all moved well together. Within minutes Kane could see how it was starting to effect the others and himself and hoped to find an entrance fast to get them all at least out of the direct cold.

Then with a signal from Hart a door was in front of the them, though it had clearly been torn from its hinges and cast aside, it now lay jutting out of the drifting snow. The open doorway after a fast recon was shown to lead into the south entrance foyer, which would normally be a relatively unremarkable room, were it not for the missing door and resultant snowdrift covering the floor.

Four steps into the room, Hart holds up a hand, signaling a halt. The team then sees what he has - a large, fur-covered hand sticking up out of the snow inside of the room.
A quick dusting off reveals the body of a huge (approximately seven and a half feet tall, easily four to five hundred pounds) apelike creature covered with long, shaggy white fur. It's frozen face is contorted into a mask of pain, most likely a result of the multiple bullet holes the corpse is riddled with.

“Well, at least we know that bullets will kill them”

This from Sgt Lee.

“Ok everyone take ten and stand at ease you all know the drill keep your arms and legs moving but relax, grab an energy bar and some water. Lee cover the entrance door behind us, Hart the interior door. Johannsen. if you can get me a DNA sample from the creature do so.”

Turning away he keyed his ear piece com unit.

“Lt, Kane here, we have gained entrance on our side of the Facility and have found the body of one of those Ape type creatures. I have Cpl Johannsen getting us a DNA sample and then will move further into the building. Any new orders at this time.”.......

“Cpl Hart join me outside please, that’s an order.”

Looks as though it's time for another dressin down. Didn't take me long, may just even be a record. If I always cared about proper decorum and everythin', then I could be leadin' my own team at the point. A slight chuckle ran through the corporal's mind with the end of his thoughts.

"Sorry bout this, ma'am, figures the sergeant needs to be seein me. Thought I woulda had a chance to be spendin' a couple o' minutes in your lovely company and all," Hart told the chief as he rose up from his position.

It took all his discipline, which was a surprising amoung when he put his mind to it, to keep from even cracking a slight smirk at the bug he had put up Kane's rear. The dressing down was just as he had expected, exempting a couple of points. Now, he shoulda knew to ask for dismissal from the lieutenant, it just had not crossed his mind. That always seemed to get him in trouble.

"Heard, understood, and acknowledged, Sgt," Hart spoke with a slight hint of sarcasm in his voice. He even gave the chief a smile and slight nod of his head as he grabbed his gear to head for the hangar.

Current.
Boy, this is colder than any of the temps we had back home. Hart could remember any of those fond times when at night in slight subzero temps that they had run out of firewood and had to go cut some more. This was so much worse for the man that preferred warmer temps, which was why he had so readily gone to the land of sand and sun.

Gabriel toop point on the sergeant's urging. Boy, first impressions really stick with this man. He must not like me or somethin' It wasn't that he cared, but he just didn't want to run right smack into of them yeti things. Checking his rifle to make sure was on semi-auto, he kept it on safety despite the order to do so otherwise. He was confident that he could take it off if neede and did not want to be responsible for any "friendly fire".

Hart knew that the cold was bothering him as he make his way across the arctic plain to the facility but just shrugged it off for the time. His eyes raised up as he spotted the door laying in front of the entrance to the facility but just trudged on through. That is when he spotted the claw to another of them yetis.

Gabriel held up is hand and hollered out, "Got a yeti over here, Sarge."
