What do you want in a game?

Call it types, genres, themes or moods, but what is your favorite type of game? I'm not asking systems or game lines here, but more in the line of genre. Do you like high-fantasy with flying airships and speaking animals? Or maybe gothic horror and angst is more your cup of tea? Or is espionage and intrigue your thing? Or perhaps you just want the biggest weapon to chop down the biggest foe?

Fantasy, horror, adventure, science fiction, etc. We all prefer either one over the other or some kind of a mix of them. Personally, I like a healthy mix depending on the day. Somedays I just need a healthy mix of horror/sci-fi (although I've never gotten one) or adventure/fantasy. I don't always like brainless killing but sometimes it feels good to chop something down. I believe I could play or GM almost everything and still have fun. But what about you?

nice...

Good topic!

My first love is fantasy gaming, though I admit that I'm more of a low fantasy (magic sword are rare and precious) than a high fantasy (2nd level rogues pick their teeth with +1 daggers) guy.

That begin said, I love sci fi - Trek gaming can be great fun. and if you combine the two (Star Wars)... well, that's a blast, too!

Hrm... I'm running a modern game right now, featuring a team of Army Rangers, and am enjoying the heck outta that, too!

I guess I like all sorts of games.

This, that, and some of those...

Like you, Skari, I can't honestly say that any particular genre, mood, etc, strikes my fancy more than any other. As long as the story is good, I'll usually enjoy the heck out of anything...

well

I know that it's always nice/interesting when the DM/GM does something with your character that refers to the background that you took time to write out.

In other words: when you feel like you're important in the story, and your character matters.

This of course gives some dificulties:
1 the player(s) that it involves need to stay alive...
2 the other players shouldn't feel like they're just hanging around.

I don't really care for a difference in genres. Though I've never played or dmed a sci-fi game. They aren't that appealing to me. I wouldn't mind a horror game, if I had the time.

A challenging one

I prefer adventure games and also more of the low magic type. A mix of puzzles and fighting make it intersting. Make me think as a player more than figuring out what I need to roll to hit. Make players come up with unique solutions and reward them when they do.

Hmm

Well i would say..

Evil is the thing that makes a game truly good for me, the feeling of evil.

Be it yourself (like it most often is in my cases if the GM allows it) or just your general environment.. i like the whole dark scary atmosphere..

And of course every game has to have one or two hilarious killings.. Like that time i threw an old lady up into a tree for no particular reason.. Sigh.. good times..

Magic as Technology

I like to see magic being utilized and combined with technology. I also like the Tolkien type fantasy settings. Eberron did a decent job with this so I was happy for the campaign setting

Fantasy

I love fantasy, but not a single game has ever delivered the kind of fantasy I want. I hate Cliches. Dwarves, Elves, Vampires..that sort of stuff. When I play a game, I want epicness. I hunger for hundreds of NPC on the screen at once, massive battles ragin on behind me, spells and arrows and rocks and bodies being flung left and right. Like Lord of the Rings, but four times as big.

Fantasy also preferred here

but I also like modern, futuristic, apocalyptic, old west, and silly-fun themes.

I absolutely abhor games centered on (or around) were-creatures, vampires, undead, or speaking animals.

But that still leaves a bunch of possibilities ...

I like the fun stuff.

Oh, you don't get what I mean by that? Lemme explain.

I like any game, as long as it's interesting enough. I mean, what's the fun of playing your favourite style of game if it's just plain boring? I mean... I like fantasy as much as the other guy. I'm huge into the flying creatures, magic swords, swords and sorcery mixed into one neat tiny package. But when there's all that, but no story or excitement to be had? No thanks.

On the other hand, I used to not like sci-fi to much. I mean, it was a cool thing to talk about, but that was it. But I've joined into Admiral's Paranoia game, and it's great. He keeps you engaged, and it's a great concept.

No matter the genre, I'll play. As long as it's fun enough to be interesting, and you don't feel jipped when you finish it.

hmm

i have always been a fan of the underbelly side of a city running the back allies and that sorta thing. So i guess i would have to go with the intrigue style of play mixed with some action and fighting to keep things exiting

Games

I myself like fantasy games with a decent amount of magic. Not too overpowering, I dont want every child in the street capable of casting fireballs, but at the same time I dont want to have to complete an epic quest to retrieve a silvered dagger.

I really enjoy running D&D games with an exotic feel. I loved to run horror type games. I also loved the more exotic campaign settings (Ravenloft, Planescape, Darksun) compared to the traditional (Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk). Of course being poor as I was (am) most of the stuff I do nowadays is homebrew (3.5 ruleset).

hard to say

it's no easy task to label myself to any specific genre of game. I love a good role-playing game with plenty of horror, free-roam adventure, suspense, action, morality choices, realism, and everything a good game really needs. I enjoyed The Elder Scrolls series a great deal, however it lacked good character movements and a solid storyline. Not to mention so much more.

Hmmm

I prefer low level games I will agree with what I think Keeper was saying on that. Having to get creative with minimal resources is fun.

As for a setting... anything goes but I am greatly intriuged when things get mixed up and combined in imaginative ways. I loved the setting I came up with for one of my (failed) attempts at DMing here... a wild west setting but with fantasy races and magic. Ogres with shotguns and dwarven prostitutes... yay!

I also do enjoy playing either extreme of the alignment rainbow. Pure evil characters are delightful as they allow you to do so many things you never could in real life. And pure good characters push you towards fanaticsm and make you really consider your actions. Neutral characters are -easier- and thus not as interesting.

M.
