Forgotten Realms: Kaelyn Style~Recruitment Thread

Welcome one and all to my first attempt at running a game here on the inn not in a world or setting of my own design. Having been prompted into creating a character to play in a 3.5ed Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, I got excited about partaking in a world I’ve dived into for years upon years in one book, article or another. So here I was all primed ready to play, made a stellar opening post or two and then….
Our DM disappeared off the face of the planet, leaving our hearts and minds yearning for adventure.

So there I sat day in and day out pondering about what to do about this predicament and tonight reached a conclusion. If I can’t play in the Forgotten Realms, I’ll DM in it and bring enjoyment, adventure, and intrigue to others.

So, without further adieu:

The Forgotten Realms: The Unsung Heroes. Number of Players: 4 (6 Max)
Posting Rate: (Flow of Postage, anywhere from daily to once / week depending on PC involvement and my work schedule)
Starting Level: 4
Starting Gold: 3,000gp
Item Limit / Cost Maximum: None
Races allowed: Standard PHB/ FRCS/ FRPHB Races, others available through explicit consent by myself.
Classes allowed: Standard PHB/ FRCS/ FRPHB Classes, others available through explicit consent by myself.
Alignment’s Allowed: Any (However Evil PC’s must contact me via PM with intent of character along with one (1) full PAGE of character history, ambitions, and villainous exploits past and present. I’ll only allow Evil PC’s who will contribute to the overall intrigue of the plot, not simply detract from progression or cause interpersonal conflicts.)

Source Books Allowed: Complete Series, Unearthed Arcana, (Flaws allowed- Max 2 @ first level) Book of Exalted Deeds, Spell Compendium, Pocket Arcana, Pocket Divine, Pocket Grimoire, Masters of the Wild, Tomb and Blood, Sword and Fist, and most other 3e Supplements. (3.5 conversions often available) others available through explicit consent by myself.

Special: I’m an avid unique racial/ class creator, if you’d like a special class or race built based on a concept feel free to let me know! I’ve many anthropomorphic races already done, as well as Fae and other mystical creature templates up for use.

Starting Roleplaying Factors:
Opening Script Location: Darromar, Capital of Tethyr. Year 1370 DR
Character Description/History: @ least 3 paragraphs of your character’s description, character traits, and history leading up to their current reason for being in Darromar.

ICEBREAKER Writing Samples: As I try to keep favoritism to a modicum and encourage both newcomers and longstanding ‘big leaguers’ to join my ranks of players, I ask all hopeful recruits to respond with a paragraph to the following in context with a possible character concept.

The shadows dance and cavort around the clearing you have chosen to make camp in. The late autumn breeze fights the mediating warmth of the campfire to send shivers down your spine. Daybreak will come soon, but the constant feeling of hungry eyes staring over you is enough to keep you from some much needed rest. Gazing out between the silent trees of the surrounding forest, a fleeting glimpse of movement darts from cover to cover, shadow to shadow…

Devalero's Not Afraid

Here's my response to your prompt. I hope you enjoy

Standing before the night, Devalero, mighty Paladin of Pelor, raises his greatsword high into the air. With a surge of power from his God, his sword swells into brilliance as a blue flame ignites the sharpened steel. Darkness has no place here. Stepping towards the movement in the shadows he calls out. Those who travel under the cover of night often perish under that same blanket of darkness. Reveal yourself and you may yet live. Resist me not! I am Pelor's mighty warrior and friend to the light! Appearing before him materializes a noble white steed harnessed and ready for battle. Devalero climbs into the saddle with great ease and commands his mighty winged pegasus to raise his forelegs off the ground displaying his heavenly might.
I would love to play. Just give me till the beginning of next week to make a character as I will probably be quite busy over the weekend.

I think you have my virgin post

I am an old (in age and experience) table-top gamer with some experience in text-based RP and MMORP, but I have never tried something like this. Sounds interesting, almost like the old play-by-mail games, but quite a bit faster.

I sent some info via PM about a character already created, and a sample post was included. I am interested in joining your game, so here is the sample post again:

Linnix moved to squat on the downwind-side of the fire, putting up with the eye-stinging smoke to get what heat she could. She could tell by looking, and by the sudden drop in temperature, that dawn was not far off. Not soon enough, as far as she was concerned. All night she had not been able to shake the feeling of being under constant scrutiny by eyes other than her own. Bandits? Animals? Who knows. While her vision is better than most, dark is dark, and sometimes dark is just too dark to see in. Thank goodness she was only day or two from the nearest town. She didn’t mind traveling alone, but knew the old “safety in numbers” adage was all too true.

A sudden movement caught her attention and she snapped her head to catch what she could. But the movement of the wind-blown branches and shrubs would make it difficult, at best, to distinguish a threat from the slow, waving dance of the trees. But she would watch, unmoving, until she was as sure as she could be that she was in no danger.

Ooh...

Ooh, I'd love to join in. I love all things FR, and much like yourself I'm really disappointed at the fact our other game seems to have fallen apart.

If it's fine with you, I'd like to get a chance to actually play Aelistae (my character in the other game). I hate to abandon characters that I've just created and haven't had a chance to explore and play with.

If you'd rather a new character, though, I can create another.

I'll post a reply to your prompt when I'm a little less tired (and drunk)...

Ginefae et all

I had every intention of sending you a personal invite, and Alistae pumped up a level is fine, though obviously you know the oppression you'll face.

Deva and Zonk, both are welcome. I look forward to gaming with you. Stat rolling should be 4d6 drop lowest and add rest. No more than one natural 18.

Otherwise, I'll look over character sheets and get back to you. (Zonk I've got your sheet and I'll review it.)

Good to hear

I should have said it before, but welcome to the inn Zonk!

Thanks Kaelyn. I'll send you her sheet and her other details later today.

As for my response to your prompt, here it is:

The blue-black of the shadows merged with the blue-black of her skin until it was impossible to know where the darkness ended and she began. She sensed rather than saw the presence of one or more creatures at the edge of the clearing in which she sat, but if she was worried by them she did not show it. Instead the drow elf sat with her legs crossed beneath her, gazing longingly at the night sky.

And then it happened.

The clouds parted, and the silvery light of the moon spilled forth onto Toril and onto Aelistae.

She smiled. Her Goddess was with her.

Brianna's character concept

I would love to play a ranger-archer specialist, either 1/2 sun elf, 1/2 moon elf or perhaps a special DM race is possible too.

"The shadows dance and cavort around the clearing you have chosen to make camp in.
It had been a long day in the saddle. Loriel had not stopped until the darkness made further travel hard for her horse. Mor, her horse, afterall deserved a rest as did Moon Shadow. they had been on their feet all day with only brief rest stops for them all. Over all it had be a dissappointing day. Her one lead had died out abrouptly and now she had to go back to see if she could pick up her brothers last know position. The camp fire burn softly in the chilly night not that Loriel needed it for warmth as much for the light and lifting of her spirits. Her favorite cousin had gone missing and no one seemed to know what had happened to him. She had now been on his trail for month and with the last lead faded to nothingness her mood was at low ebb.

Moon Shadow, first made Loriel aware of the movement in the forest just beyond the reach of the light from her campfire. Her dark head raised from her paws her head had turned slightly pricking her ears up. Her golden eyes fastened on something. Loriel new that movement recognizing her companions intent interest. She did not ignore it. Loriel dropped her hood, which had been up for warmth and let her eyes adjust to the darkness beyond. The elven sight a useful bonus to a Ranger in the wilds.

Loriel did not worry that much about what lay beyond in the darkness, though she did wish to discover more about what it was. Firstly it was furtive movement mean it was cautious so a degree. However it is not wise to turn your back on the most cautious creature least it be emboldened to become less cautious. She stood up the folds of her fine woolen cloak of deep forest green fell around her With the fire to her back her front was in shadows too, which allowed her to slowly move her had to her sword beneath it and pull it clear of the sheath. She would have preferred her bow but to use that would be to make her actions clearly visible to whatever lay be young flitting from shadow to shadow.

Moon Shadow rose to her feet as Loriel did. Her nose lifted to scent the breezes. Fortunately if this thing move a bit more it would be upwind of Moon Shadow's sensitive nose. The campfire reflected on her coat. It was of a smoky, dark green with splotches of lighter green scattered across her back, looking very like moonlight dappling dark forest foliage--hence her name Mor was an unusual hybrid mating of coo shee and wolf. Loriel herself was a strange hybrid of Sun elf and Moon elf. They belonged together.

Another flit in the shadows caught Loriel's attention and this time Moon Shadow growled low in her throat. With that warning Loriel clear her sword form her cloak and stood ready--lightly balanced on the balls of her feet feet spread to shoulder width for easy of movment in any direction..

Ok ... looks like we have

Drow Cleric
Human Rogue
Elven Archer

So .. I would either go fighter or arcane magic eh ..
what do you guys think?

My thinkin'

Ok ... with a:

Drow Cleric - spellcaster/fighter
Human Rogue - prefers ranged weapons
Elven Archer - ranged weapon(s)

I would think that another spellcaster would make it a "theme" party of combatants from a distance, and a fighter would make it a more rounded party, capable of melee and ranged combat. I know, no help there.

My vote would be to make it a "theme" party just for giggles.

But the DM has final say, no? Not us (unless I missed something).
