Character Concept Post

Jozan1 it is true you can probably make just about anything and you said something about being CN but when I read your post to the Icebreaker you character, which was supposed to be based on your character concept fo this game, you killed an elf and was planning to eat it. That is not the act of a CN character. Tt is the act of Evil though and I as a elf would be foolish to travel with you. Character is what you are in the dark. .

Hmm...

Well first let me say how pleased I am at the interest that has been shown. I look forward to gaming with you!

Secondly, let me just chip in about the whole race thing. I'm playing a drow character, and although she is good-aligned I'm fully expecting a lot of discrimination towards her based on the colour of her skin. I don't think you should expect people to be more tolerant if you play a member of a race that's normally evil. The reaction should be one of suspicion and hostility, and that can be fun roleplaying-wise.

Oh and something else just came to me. If you do want to play a race that is usually evil, you do need to think about harmony within the PC party. What's acceptable for a CN hobgoblin or bugbear would be abhorrent for a an elf or a human (for instance would a CN hobbo find eating a sentient species bad?).

I don't mean to dissuade you from playing whatever it is you want Jozan, but there's always a lot to think over when playing a monstrous race.

I didnt mean for that character ice breaker thing to be based off my character, and I do expect discrimination. Dont worry,I got my characer under control. And he was alone, so no one knew what he did

My decision

If I'm allowing a Drow to try and break the shackles of her race I can do the same for a goblinoid. Jozan, I will allow you to play a gobliniod with the following restrictions.

**Your alignment is True Neutral or above (leading towards good/law) This is because I cannot see anyone save possibly Aelistae accepting you (because she herself will have one heck of a time fitting in)
1: If your actions are deemed unacceptable by the rest of the party and they choose to oust/atack you, I will allow it as due course of racial problems all over Toril. To ensure a real feel of the tentions and constraints of the Campaign Setting.
**I do Not want Jozan to make an opening post and immediately have everyone attack him, but the scene set should help prevent that.
2: Since your character is of evil racial stereotype and not alignment, I'll hope (but not demand) for your attempted teamwork and productive addition to the team.

If anyone still decides they cannot or will not roleplay with a goblinoid for whatever reason speak here and now freely. If you know my DM'ing style, you'll know my PC's change the game, and I am but a weaver of tales. From the opening post on, I allow as much liberty in action and roleplay as can be allowed, and thus hope you'll do me the honor of continuing to play.

warmage

Playing a warmage I will probably be either CN or True Neutral. So I think it gives equal opportunity for me to kill anyone I feel like .. So watch out!

Thought on the matter

Under the conditions you set I, the player, can certainly live with "IT". Though I am going to have to change Loriel's dharacter concept I have written up already since her favorite enemy is goblinoids-hobgoblins. If he plays a hobgoblin I will have to change it because of the problems it would cause.

I will continue to play but I do not "like" the idea of a monster race party member. Drow are different they are a race that is known for alignments other than evil and they are intelligent rance not a monster. True not many of them are good or trustworthy. So theDrow is not the same problems as a goblinoid race would be.

Only concern I have...

senseless killing will obviously have reprocussions, of which I'm known for particularly dastardly methods of invoking.

So on that note... kill away.

Well, on that note..

Brianna do not change Loriel, hatred is hatred and will make for interesting character interaction.

Jozan, maybe seeing everyone elses concerns you'd like to play something else, something not immediately confrontational...

Savaar or Wolven from nomachron remember them? both are different non evil non standard humanoid races...

thoughts?

My thoughts

I have been watching and waiting for this to be resolved, without adding my own reasonings, and whether or not the resolution is to my own satisfaction.

I will be the one to back out, with apologies to all, including and especially the DM. I hope this will not put me in a bad light with others on this site. Whether or not it is understood, here are my reasons why:

I agree that D&D is pretty much wide open, but the laws, places, races, creatures, an monsters were created in such a way as to give a background and reason for the societal norms described.

I will focus on the bugbear to make my point, but my reasoning applies to many other species as originally created: The description of the bugbear in the MM describes the alignment as "usually" chaotic evil. This is a "racial preference", something he would have been raised with unless raised outside his (or her) society. It is also why bugbears, or goblinoids in general have not been used before except as opponents to player characters. It is what they were created for, meant to do. Playing one in an evil campaign works because it fits within their parameters and can be justified. Playing one outside of an evil campaign "just because I've never done it before" explains the player's reason, but not the change in morals and ethics of the goblinoid. While it is not a far step (and legal by game terms) to go from CE alignment to CN, I can see no justification for a bugbear to want to willingly associate with a group not formed by his own hand, a group he cannot bully or dictate to. Or for him to change alignment at all, indicating a change in basic beliefs. This may not even be known to the player -- yet -- and may be developed through the game.

In a nutshell, I can save the game some frustration and myself some time by withdrawing now. If and when my character would have met with the (or any) goblinoid, she would have broken off any negotiations and ran the other way anyway.

To be honest, I forsee the game stalling, or even stopping, as a result of this. I will follow the game with interest, to see if (and how) it can be completed to the satisfaction of all (and maybe learn something in the process). If I am proven wrong, I will prostrate myself before all of you again as an unworthy nay-sayer. Good luck to you all and, again, I apologize.

'Sokay ...

If he does play a goblinoid, you already have my resignation, as requested.

If anyone still decides they cannot or will not roleplay with a goblinoid for whatever reason speak here and now freely.
If he doesn't, then I will owe all here another apology for being such a stick-in-the-mud ...
