Subject: Tale as old as Time

What is it about this time of year that makes me get back onto the Inn? Is it the silence of the snow that inspires quiet contemplation and introspection? The dark reaches of the winter nights that spark imagination and an age long tradition of storytelling? Perhaps my avoidance of family during Yuletide festivities?

Whatever it is, I miss collaborating with you all, and weaving great tales of mystery, intrigue, and adventure. I will be lurking and writing one-offs to see if I can entice my soul into a regular schedule of contribution.

Subject: Dear Maker MEAT.

Maria wrinkled her nose appreciatively.

"Well, look at those! Mighty kind of you, Talca. It's been damn hard to find much in the way of meat these days. Cookie'll be right pleased."

She winked again, removed the bundle from his hands, and sashayed into the kitchen.

A few minutes later Maria came back laden down with a large bowl of stew and a hunk of crusty bread. The door to the kitchen banged open behind her and out strode Cookie.

His shoulders stood well above Maria's head. A large hand absently rubbed the 5 o'clock shadow along his muscular jawline. Inked in runes dotted the backs of his fingers. The stained tunic he wore lacked sleeves, and up and down his arms ran more tattoos. They were tribalistic in nature, and the repeating patterns seemed to interweave in a symbolic way. The discolored apron tied around his waist was clean with an old dish towel draped haphazardly off one side. His black eyes found the elf's honey colored ones, and he stared hard. As the seconds ticked on, his gaze didn't waver, and Maria shifted uncomfortably behind him.

He reached out and delicately set down a tiny crock next to the bread.

"Thank you," he boomed. Cookie turned heel and walked over to the slate that usually bore the house specials. His beefy hand picked up a piece of chalk and ever so gently scrawled the words "Rabit Stu".

Satisfied with his handiwork, the cook went back into the kitchen, the door banging shut behind him.

Maria looked pointedly down at the little crock, and then back into the elf's eyes.

"No charge," she whispered with a slight giggle.

Subject: The Bleeding Lute Restart - IT'S NOT A DROUGHT, JIM

Plight has come to the city of Lynnbrooke. Crops are rotting for reasons unknown, herds are dying suddenly, and the local folk are beginning to suffer. Rumors abound, but no one really knows what is happening.

Have you come to investigate the town, or are you just passing through?

Are you a farmer who is worried about their family's livelihood, or are you part of the townsfolk blaming the farmers for their failed crops?

Are you seeking adventure or have you come to recruit?

Have you come to solve the mystery of the plague, or do you know exactly what caused it?

The Bleeding Lute is a free form roleplaying environment. There are no time restraints, and no expectations.

Local NPCs have been established for anyone to interact with; feel free to write them however you wish.

A list of main NPCs can be found on the Q&A page ; interaction is encouraged, but if you would like to rp heavily with one of these main characters, please send me a PM.

The Q&A page also has a layout of the tavern - check it out for more inspiration!

Today's Menu

Look. I ain't sayin' it's fancy. But it's fillin'. And I'll be damned if my patrons go 'ungry. We're calling it "stew". Got summit to liven up the pot? Lemme know, I'll give yer good money. Everyone's sufferin' through this plight, and it'd be a right kindness fer summit fresh.

Beverage of the Day

Ain't nothing new wot account fer the drought. In fact, the damned Mahogany's all run dry. Cider too. Grog's wot's left. I got 'er few bottles o' the good stuff tucked away, but it'll cost.

-Henry

The Inn feels unusually crowded considering the current plight in the area. Maybe folks felt the need for community, mutual commiseration, or drunken consolation. Whatever the reason, the tone is far from cheerful here.

A young man sits on the stage with a lute. He keeps playing jaunty tunes to try and lift everyone's spirits, but the folks in the tavern aren't having any of it. Someone should stop him.

A group of three men sit at the far end playing a game of dice. One keeps eyeing the bard on the stage, grimacing every time a new song begins. He subconsciously fingers a blade at his side.

Four hunters pour over a map of the local area. A half-orc, two humans, and a dwarf are discussing where game might be hiding during this lean time. Their conversation is heated, specifically between the dwarf and one of the humans.

A rich looking noble and what is clearly a mercenary are chatting. The noble is extremely nervous while the mercenary does not look amused.

Seven farmers sit around one end of the long community table. The conversation is dour; the fields have been hit the hardest and the community is beginning to blame them for the lack of food.

An orange tabby cat named "Socks" flits around the Lute. She is known to be an excellent mouser.

Two half elves, a human, and two gnomes sit together laughing. Each is a little worse for wear, but the human looks like she lost an argument with a wolverine. They are all clearly drunk.

Five sit at the bar, leaving space for only two more. Waldorf and Statler sit in their normal seats, but quite unusually, Murph is leaning against the bar chatting quietly with someone who is hooded and cloaked while he surveys the room.

Creaking sounds coming from the floor above indicate that there is something happening in the library upstairs.

Yes yes, lovely indeed.

What's that you say?

Why yes, it has been a while since I've shown my face around here.

No no, it's not like that. Life just... got in the way. But everything is alright now.

I see you've been busy with all sorts of games and collaborative adventures! To be honest, I'm looking forward to reading all that's been happening since I've been gone.

It, uh, might take me a while.

But in the meantime, I'd like to know what you've been up to. It has been a couple of years, after all.

Mine is an old, well worn tale of tragedy and mishap, filled with mystery, intrigue, and sprinkled with tiny amounts of triumph. But fear not! I will not bore thee with such ordinary and trite tales of my life.

I just wanted to leave a scrawl somewheres to let you all know that I had stopped by, and that I miss you all terribly!

It is my sincere hope that I will be finding more time to stop by the Inn, have a few drinks, share a few laughs, and just maybe knock out an adventure. I can make no promises, but mayhap after the holidays my lurking will be a bit more prominent.

Don't worry about Tess, Ody. I am actually quite glad of the game reprieve since I have been moving. I am still surrounded by boxes, but the Internet is up. I will probably bang out a post here on my iPad since my computer is still buried.

I agree with you, Al. I think crew members should have some rudimentary skills if they are aboard a ship. Things get picked up as time goes along, etc. etc.

I stil don't have Internet. I am at work, so this will be brief.

I very much doubt our little bomb will take out that huge transport ship. I think Brom's original idea of taking out the ... Er.... ship crane? was a good one.

But I shall do as my captain commands!

I wanted to let you guys know that I am moving to a new (and improved!) place of residence, so my week has been allocated to packing and hauling. As it is, Tess really has no idea what is happening elsewhere, so she will be in ignorant bliss until someone comes up to the bridge and tells her of the new (and improved!) mess we've all seemed to have landed in.

End of the meeting

It was after Grace’s report that darkness finally came across Tess’s features. Templeton Steele. She had an inkling that big money was involved behind this whole gorram deal, but she didn’t realize that it was money that was spread far and wide through the ‘verse, in and out of the government. Cashy money was all that fat huen dahn cared about, never mind who got in the way. Tess wondered how Badger had gotten his greasy fingers on this job.

Her cheeks began to flush as she thought through all of the injustices that had been caused by that man; the lives that had been lost. His indiscriminate way of dealing to both sides in the war. But they had all been suckered into buying guns at dirt cheap rates, there was nothing for it. He never cared about the quality of merchandise that he was selling; he had never been pinned down while his only chance of escape was the gun that was malfunctioning in his hand. Nope, all that mattered was that folks were buying his guns; and if they were malfunctioning a little, it just meant they had to purchase the better model. That was the legacy of the Man that was Templeton Colt Steele.

The pilot barely heard Angela’s and JC’s comments. Blood pounded in her ears by the fact that this crew had been pushed into a deal with Steele without their knowledge.

“Can I have a word with you?” Grace asked quietly as the others began to leave.

“Sure thing, Gracie,” Tess poured herself the remainder of the tea and leaned up against the table, her lips pressed into a thin line.

Grace waited until the room had cleared before dropping the bombshell, “There is something else, I need to tell you. I actually know Templeton Steele personally.”

“Steele?” Tess spat, “Your on intimate terms with that lurn shwei jah jwohn?

Grace crossed her arms and did her best to look small, “He was a family friend and sort of like an uncle. The only reason why I am bringing it up is because I have reasons to believe he earned a black mark with the companion guild.”

“Why does it matter if that treacherous shi jing chih tu can’t buy himself a guilded whore? It wouldn’t surprise me none if that double-crossing, lily-livered lao chien got himself ousted fer tryin’ to cover up some crackpot scheme involvin’ the Companions.”

“It could be important, maybe not. I just figured it was better if I shared it then kept it to myself.” explained Grace.

“Why didn’t you bring this up while you were tellin’ us it was Mr. Templeton Steele’s bride we’d be haulin’?” she asked, put emphasis on Steele’s name.

Grace frowned before commenting “I don’t trust Catie, therefore I am not going talk about my past in front of her. Simple as that. Not to mention she is a little too good of an actress to earn my trust”

Tess’s mouth opened in an “O” as she took in a deep breath, but Jon cut her off, “Grace, we’ll just keep this quiet for now. We don’t want folk counting on any kind of favor from Templeton Steele just because you knew him back when. … and no need to put you in any spot light. Only you will know when and if we need to use this information and if you want to keep an eye on Catie, well then you just do that.”

Jon raised an eyebrow at Tess. The pilot knew what he was getting it, but for once she was obliged to agree with Grace. Anything with the Steele stamp on it was cause for concern.

“Thanks, Gracie,” she said flatly, “for lettin’ us know.” She turned and left the galley. Jon followed her.

“Well I gather you really like seeing them Simon guys,” he said bemusedly, “ but I’ll need you to stay by the controls when we make the pickup. No telling if we’ll have to cut and run in a hurry if we get in F’n Zse. You’ll have plenty of time around them two after we are in the black.”

“They are awful nice eye candy,” Tess said, her teeth clenched together, “but Steele, Jon. For gorram sake! Had the job not held dire consequences if we don’t do our bonnie best, I’d just as soon as leave that blood money da shao jei on this rock! Let the media eat her for breakfast.”

Persephone, Diviner's Gulch, Day 2, 2:00 am ST

Tess was glad Jon asked her to stay on the bridge. She didn’t trust herself to speak to Lilianna Fairchild and end up botching the deal before it ever began. Destiny floated in like a ghost in the night. Tess found the place easily enough, and set the ship down gently. The area was ugly.

Purty nice place for an ambush. Tess figured Jon was having the same inklings down in the cargo bay. That was always one thing to count on from the war: always looking for the attack.

Jon was a long time before his head popped back onto the bridge.
“I’d never make it as a cruise ship captain. Let’s get outta here and back to the black where we belong.”

Tess rubbed her hands under the seat before starting the ignition sequence, “Thank god for that, Jon. Your belly might'n be saggin' over your belt with all that lazin’ about you’d be doin' on a cruise!”

Jon piped in, “She gave us meat!”

“She did now, did she?” her face held a sour look, “Well, nice that she could bring some fancy vittles to share amoungst the poor folk of the ‘verse.”

I know it's short, I just felt like we needed to get that missile-attached-to-shuttle bit in the game. I'm good with the plan. Thank you for outlining it, Al. That helped quite a bit.

As to the previous mention of Tess's suprisingly high rifle skill, I always imagined her dropping people off for missions in the war, and providing some sniper cover while she waited for them to come back. Might come in handy for a little crossfire?

Subject: Let's trick out the shuttle!

"We’re changin’ plans."

Tess settled in as Wyatt laid out their new plan of action. She liked it. It was simple. Simple meant there was less to booger up.

The idea of laying explosives around Rocinante made her a might twitchy. Even though she was grounded at the present, having to blow those bombs meant the Roc was grounded for a long gorram time.

“Once there, we’ll settle in fer a siege, an’ try t’ weed out their inside man. Maybe he can give us some insight that’ll turn the tide even more. We take that missile that them boys are makin’ for us an’ keep it safe for use against them that come. "

The missile. Having that stashed in the cave meant the only time they would use it if it was for a last resort. Damned if'n I'll let that happen. Suicide bomb wit a bunch of civies and my back ter the wall ain't how I plan to depart this bonny life.

Tess fidgeted with her necklace, quietly thinking as the Captain finished explaining the new plan. He took his hat off, ran his fingers through his hair, and stared off for a moment. She recognized the look. It was the look of a man making sure he dotted his i's and crossed his t's; lives depended on it.

He replaced his hat and said, “Let’s get a move on then. Time is not our friend.”

"Captain," Tess said, sitting up in her chair, "there is one more thing. That missile. We could rig it up to the shuttle. It'd have to be a close pass, but I could launch it at that merc ship. That way we could bring them boys down before they do any damage from the air. Disable 'em, git 'em on the run before things go real dicey.

Even if it don't bring 'em completely down, I could run a little dodge and weave. Nuttin' like a hunk of metal in yer way to spoil plans. Always did say offense is better than defense."
