Personal Bio:
Lt. Serene Markus is a well educated and refined woman serving in Star Fleet as a Ship’s Counselor aboard the USS Discovery, NCC-71847, a Galaxy-class vessel. She is responsible for the mental well-being of the ship’s crew and any civilian staff. Counselors were assigned to starships after Star Fleet realized that the pressures of extended space travel could result in psychological problems that would require professional care. The ship’s counselor is considered a vital role aboard a star ship and therefore included in the Senior Staff and also has a diplomatic role, advising the Captain in certain situations. As with the chief medical officer, the ship's counselor has the power to relieve other officers and crewmembers of duty if he or she feels that their patient is suffering from a condition that may hinder their ability to perform their duties effectively.

Serene Markus is a trained and certified psychologist who joined Star Fleet where she attended the Academy and was commissioned as an Ensign. Six years later she is a full Lieutenant who has been newly assigned aboard a Galaxy-class starship. She has been aboard the Discovery only a couple of months, replacing Counselor Averaci, and her easy going ways and willingness to help have already shown she will be welcome addition to the crew.

In the short two months, Serene has shown that she is very good at her job; she seems to have a special understanding of people of all races. Some have said it is as if she can ‘feel’ what they are feeling and empathize with them on their level. She is always friendly and quick with her dazzling smile; her door is always open and she is willing to listen to anyone’s problems, concerns or fears.

Serene is still getting to know everyone and has spent a lot of time just 'listening' to everyone in general conversation and perusing the crew's confidential records left by the previous Counselor. She has already identified a few crewmembers that she will have to speak with and possibly arrange a few counseling sessions. This crew seems to be under a lot of stress; she recognizes that she will have her work cut out for her.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(The following is NOT known to anyone aboard ship or even in Starfleet)
Serene Markus is in fact an El-Aurian, a humanoid species of "listeners" originating from the El-Aurian system. It is speculated that El-Aurians have an awareness that supersedes the normal flow of time and space. The El-Aurians were a widely-traveled people who spread themselves across many parts of the galaxy. It is known that at least one El-Aurian visited Earth in 1893, before Humans had any official knowledge of alien species.
Externally, the El-Aurians are physically identical to Humans, in structure and even the range of racial phenotypes. The only significant physical difference between Humans and El-Aurians is in the aging process, as the extremely long-lived El-Aurian lifespan covers many centuries.
Serene is in fact over 350 years old as humans measure time; she was part of a group of El-Aurian refugees in 2293 that were coming to Earth following their escape from the Borg. The two El-Aurian ships transporting the refugees, the SS Lakul and the SS Robert Fox, were caught in and destroyed by the Nexus energy ribbon near the Sol system. The USS Enterprise-B was able to save some of the refugees, including Serene, at the cost of one James T. Kirk's life.
Serene, being El-Aurian, takes pride in being a listener, and has a form of limited empathic ability. This ability allows her to sense what people near her are feeling and she uses this to advise people and help them in dealing with their problems. She also can use it to aid in a diplomatic sense in telling if someone is being dishonest; she often passes on useful ‘feelings’ to her Captain to assist him in negotiations or other dealings with strangers. This ability is short-ranged and gives only the very base feelings and in no way can she read people’s minds, though often it might seem like it cause of her great ability of interpreting those feelings and being to offer the correct advise and/or comfort.
Serene’s reason for being here among Humans and Star Fleet is something she keeps carefully hidden from the people around her Her people are natural lore-keepers and often use their phenomenal life spans and memory capabilities to collect the stories and life experiences of various sentient beings; this is her mission as well. It is possible as an offshoot of their prodigious memories and mental facilities that El-Aurians were extraordinarily sensitive to the space-time continuum itself. Some El-Aurians have been able to perceive changes in the timeline and sense alternate realities; whether Serene has this ability is yet to been seen.
