Personal Bio:
Quick to learn, Raphael's youth surrounded by the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards provided an early fascination with starships. Much like the way the ships were constructed his interests grew, starting with the engineers work of his parents and progressing to what drove the ships, the systems that controlled them, how they maneuvered, and perhaps most significantly, where they were going. As wonder turned to wanderlust, Raphael delved deeper into his studies in preparation for Starfleet, passing both the preparatory program and the entrance the exams, to the pride of his parents.

It was within Starfleet that Raphael's interests truly separated from the scope of his parents'. Navigation, piloting, and stellar cartography all caught his attention over topics such as warp mechanics. This caused a strain in the relationship between father and son as Raphael sought out his own path and place amidst the stars. However, it is not true that that he abandoned his technical background, for Raphael was known to look at shuttle maintenance as a pass time between studies.

During his time at Starfleet, Raphael developed a reputations as a dreamer, with his "head in the stars". Many of his class mates held the belief that he was not a serious candidate for any position on a star ship, let alone one as important as navigation or piloting. These beliefs however were dispersed when Raphael achieved the best times within the training runs at the Academy Flight Range, resulting in him gaining the astonished admiration (in some cases grudgingly) of his peers. It became far more apparent to everyone that the young dreamer did in fact take his studies seriously.

Graduating from the Academy in 2358, Raphael was first assigned to the Cartography department of the USS Luminous, an exploratory vessel, where he was also selected to act as an alternate shuttle pilot. Showing aptitude in both areas of his work, the young Ensign was selected to replace an FCO (and lead shuttle pilot) who was discharged due to confidential medical concerns. Despite his shift in position, Raphael requested to continue an active role within the Cartography department. Within eight months of his reassignment (2359.10), Raphael was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade for excellence in service.

The next several years kept Raphael constantly busy, as he maintained activity within the Cartography department to map their exploration as well as his acting duties. However it was because of his time in Cartography that he came into conflict with the Chief FCO Nolan H. Bassat, who had twenty years experience over Raphael. In the year 2362, Bassat plotted a course to return to the Sol system (based on a request from Starfleet), using previous predictions of the areas through which they were passing and not the ones from the current journey. Comparing the data, Raphael and a few peers believed they were taking a needless risk, a thought not shared by his senior officer; this led to an argument that resulted in Raphael's confinement to his quarters. The Luminous continued along Bassat's course and encountered a severe electromagnetic storm, overloading many systems and causing significant damage. Thirteen lives were lost and many more were injured, or put at risk due to failing systems; Bassat himself was injured by an electrical explosion and rendered incapable of duty. The remaining crew, including Raphael worked day and night to repair the ship and keep it stable. Once able, they resumed their course to the Sol system where the ship was dry-docked for reconstruction and the crew was re-assigned; an incident investigation report was logged during the repairs.

Raphael would spend the next two years of his reassignment as the Academy Range Officer, setting up operations for and instructing the Starfleet cadets at he Academy Flight Range near Saturn. During this time Raphael attempted to reconnect with his parents. He was able to spend some time with his mother, but his father remained 'preoccupied' with work. It was also during this time that Raphael first attempted the Bridge Officer's Test, which he failed.

In 2364, the USS Luminous was deemed fit to resume duty, refitted with newer technology. The available crew returned, and the remaining positions were filled with new faces. Bassat was replaced by a new Chief FCO, Issac Locke, with Raphael given the postion of Assistant Chief FCO. Locke was encouraging of Raphael's interest in cartography, as well as his abilities as a pilot, assuming a role of a mentor. In 2366, Raphael again attempted the Bridge Officer's test, which once again resulted in failure. Discussing the results with his mentor, Raphael was stilled uncertain what his was doing wrong. Ultimately Locke would recommend Raphael to pursue the position of Chief FCO of the USS Discovery in 2368, feeling that his apprentice was ready for the responsibility, and that the experience could help Raphael understand why he failed the test again.
