Physical Description:
Caleb is reasonably fit, rather handsome, and armed with an easy smile - not at all the typical stereotype of a research scientist. When off duty, he tends to favor Risan fashion, which currently consists largely of flowing tunics in tasteful colors.

Family and Background:
Caleb is the only son of Jameson and Lydia Talda, a husband and wife research team that moved to Risa from Califronia, Earth five years before the birth of their son. Jameson Talda is a genius in his own field of anthropology, a standard that his son sometimes finds difficult to live up to - and an influencing factor in his son's career choice that had little to do with his father's.

The Taldas originally moved to Risa from Earth on a temporary basis, intending only to study the culture for two years. However, they fell in love with the beauty of the planet, and found the Risans' relaxed views on interpersonal relationships to be liberating, and so decided to stay. Yes, in many ways, the Taldas are, in fact, space-aged hippies.

Feeling that the Risan culture was superior to their own, the Taldas adopted it, and raised their son in it, as well. Therefore, Caleb has what many in Starfleet might consider to be a shockingly casual view towards relationships.

Education:
Valtena Academy, Risa (salutatorian)
University of California at Berkeley, Earth (magna cum laude)
Kilto Biomedical Institute, Risa (six months)
Starfleet Academy (cum laude): major in xenobiology

2365.05.10 - Graduated Starfleet Academy, commissioned ensign
2365.05.21 - Assigned to USS Hibernia, science officer
2366.03.10 - Transferred to USS Discovery, assigned as science officer
2367.12.15 – promoted to Lieutenant (junior grade)

Medical History:
No real medical problems to speak of, though Caleb did have an old-fashioned appendectomy at the age of eleven.

Commendations and Reprimands:
2366.4.15 - Awarded Meritorious Research ribbon for outstanding work in the field of xenobiology

Special Skills or Ratings:
Caleb is a borderline genius in his own right, having always excelled in academics without really trying. This has proven to be a bit of a double-edged sword, as he was forced to learn to apply himself in the Academy after nearly washing out due to his lack of study.

Biology is Caleb's forte, and xenobiology his specialty, though he holds an interest in virtually all life sciences. Naturally, he has trained extensively in the use of starship sensors, as they relate to the scientific fields, but his true area of expertise lies in the arena of lifeforms.

Caleb originally considered a career in medicine, and spent six months after university training to be a doctor before he decided that it was not for him. Even so, his knowledge of first aid and of physiology in general allow him to serve as a reserve medical tech assistant, if so needed.

Caleb has met the minimum requirements for firing a hand phaser in the Academy, but is by no means a marksman.

Personal Bio:
Caleb attended Valtena Academy on Risa, graduating second in his high school class at the age of sixteen. At the insistence of his parents, he traveled to Earth for his university education, where he had the odd experience of finding Berkeley to be rather conservative and restrictive for his tastes.

Upon graduation, Caleb returned to Risa with the intention of becoming a doctor, but dropped out after decided such a career was not for him. The next year and a half were spent drifting from one project to the next until he met a Starfleet Lieutenant that had come to Risa on leave.

Of course, Caleb had had many dealings with Starfleet members in the past - Risa *is* a popular vacation spot for officers, after all - but Rebekah Malins was different. More than seeing him as a bit of an oddity (a fellow human who could show her the finer details of jamaharon), she saw potential in him, and urged him to consider a career in Starfleet. Before he knew it, he was on his way to the Academy, an act received with mixed reviews by his parents.

He excelled in the Academy, and was given a posting on the Hibernia, a research vessel. After a year of service (and high marks by his superiors), he transferred to the Discovery due to the return of the Hibernia for extended repair and refit operations.

Caleb enjoys playing the guitar (a skill inherited from his father, who brought his own instrument from earth). He jogs regularly, using the exercise for stress relief as much as for the health benefits. Caleb thinks that he would like to learn to pilot a shuttle one day, though
the opportunity for flight school has never quite worked out for him. He reads for enjoyment, finding everything from spy novels to scientific texts to be interesting.

Caleb enjoys the company of others, particularly those of the female persuasion, though the last four years have taught him a measure of restraint.

In many ways, Starfleet represents Caleb's Mecca - the opportunity to study lifeforms all across the galaxy, to seek new life and new civilizations... well, an assignment to an exploration vessel would be living a dream to him. Despite his casual outlook on life, Caleb is very serious about his work, and shows every sign of blossoming into a very competent science officer.
